2023 NFL Draft cornerback rankings: Christian Gonzalez the best of a talented group (8. Julius Brents, Kansas State, 6-3, 198, Redshirt Senior - Overview: In a classic case of "Where did you start and where are you now," Brents began his college career as a three-star safety recruit at Iowa, but enters the NFL as a reigning First Team All-Big 12 cornerback for Kansas State, fresh of commanding performances at the Senior Bowl and Combine, which is held, of course, each year in Brents’ hometown of Indianapolis. He looked mighty at home in Lucas Oil Stadium, enjoying a spectacular Combine workout, and showing growing comfort at cornerback for Kansas State the past two seasons, leaving Manhattan with back to back all-conference campaigns.   Strengths: Imposing defender with rare height and length (34" arms) to corral receivers at the line of scrimmage, limiting their release and route options while stalking nearby, showing steady acceleration and surprisingly fluid change of direction for a man of his size. He's a "freakish" athlete, as demonstrated at the Combine, where he showed both explosiveness with the longest broad jump (11’6) and fourth-highest vertical jump (41.5") recorded in Indianapolis this year and flashed that remarkably bouncy change of direction a little later, finishing behind only Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the short-shuttle (4.05) and 3cone (6.63) drills.  He's a true football player as well as an athlete, earning high marks from coaches at Kansas State and Iowa for his smarts and work ethic. Plays cornerback like the former safety he is, sacrificing his body to take out oncoming blockers and showing good take-on power and wrap as a tackler. Showed encouraging improvement in his route awareness and timing to disrupt the catch, more than doubling his PBU numbers in 2022 and recording four of his six career interceptions.  Concerns: He will be viewed by some as scheme-dependent or better back at safety in the NFL, with his timed speed not always translating to the field. He's still in the development stage as a processor, struggling to relocate the football when his back is turned and playing more reactive, at this point, than with the easy confidence of most ultra-athletic players. Like a lot of tall players, Brents is a little choppy in his transition, losing a step as he opens his hips to turn and track downfield.  Bottom Line: Brents’ size and arm length are sure to pique the interest of scouts looking for pure press or zone corners, but I think that is short-selling his game. The change-of-direction skills demonstrated in drills and on tape prove Brents is more scheme-versatile than his size suggests. 2023 NFL Draft: The top 11 cornerbacks (11. Julius Brents, Kansas State (Height: 6′ 2¾” (96th), Weight: 198 (73rd), 40-Yard Dash: 4.53 (36th), 10-Yard Split: 1.57 (41st), Vertical Jump: 41½” (96th), Broad Jump: 138″ (99th), 3-Cone Drill: 6.63 (93rd), 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.05 (80th), Wingspan: 82⅝” (99th), Arm Length: 34″ (98th), Hand Size: 9⅝” (83rd)) - Bio: Brents was ranked the 28th-best cornerback in the Class of 2018 by 247Sports out of Warren High School in Indianapolis, so there was nowhere to go but up. He committed to Iowa and played three seasons there before transferring to Kansas State for the 2021 season. That’s where the light really went on.  Over five collegiate seasons, Brents had no sacks, one pressure, 94 tackles, 34 stops, and he allowed 67 catches on 136 targets for 811 yards, 259 yards after the catch, nine touchdowns, six interceptions, eight pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 71.7. He played 1,678 snaps at outside cornerback, 149 along the defensive line, 44 in the box, 19 in the slot, and five at free safety.  Stat to Know: Brents only lined up in press coverage on 30% of his 2022 snaps, which seems… interesting for a player of his size profile.  Strengths: Brents uses his size as an advantage in that if the ball’s anywhere near him, it’s as much his as it is yours. Some of his interceptions happened just because he was close to the ball, and he was able to go all superhero to get it. That allows him to adjust in quick-twitch situations where some other bigger cornerbacks might struggle.  And if I’m Brents’ NFL defensive coordinator, I’m asking him press receivers quite a bit more than he did last season. He’s very tough to elude if he can just be right up on you from the first step.  That said, Brents is good in off-coverage because his recovery speed is good enough, and again… that wingspan really announces itself with authority on his tape.  Weaknesses: As much as it’s true for any cornerback on this list, Brents has real issues matching and catching receivers who can shake him with changes in quick angles. He’ll look lost in some of these situations to the point where you wonder if it’s fixable. Hopefully, his NFL coaches will have answers for Brents to reduce the transition time in necessary fast movements.  Conclusion: Given Brents’ size, willingness to face up in the run game, and his displayed ability to cover tight ends in the box (there’s not a lot, but it’s there).  I wonder if he might be seen as a cornerback/safety hybrid at the next level. I might move him into that role, with the understanding that his debits in quick-twitch and certain one-on-one matchups will be offset by the fact that he’s learned to take his preposterous measurements to the field in a positive sense.  NFL Comparison: Trumaine Johnson. I’m stealing this one from NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, because it just makes too much sense. Selected by the then-St. Louis Rams in the third round of the 2012 draft out of Montana, Johnson used his size (6-foot-2, 213 pounds) and ball skills to put up a few dominant NFL seasons for the Rams and Jets. Johnson also saw some time in the box and the slot, which would align with what I think Brents’ ideal usage strategy should be.) What Are Julius Brents’ 4 Best NFL Team Fits? (Detroit Lions - The Lions can continue to upgrade their cornerbacks room. Jeff Okudah had a big third year after playing in just 10 games over his first two seasons, but Detroit still had one of the worst passing defenses in the NFL last year, allowing upward of 245 yards per game in the air while also being a bottom half team in ball production. That’s a big problem with some elite receivers like Justin Jefferson and now D.J. Moore in the division. Julius Brents can be another tall, lengthy corner for the Detroit secondary that can play press and get physical against some of the division’s best receivers and come out on top. At the combine, Brents measured in at 6-foot-2 3/4 in height with an 82 5/8-inch wingspan and 34-inch arms. All three of those measurables were above the 96th percentile for cornerbacks. He then showed off his explosiveness with a 41-inch vertical and a 138-inch broad, both once again above the 96th percentile. While his 4.5 second 40 time wasn’t a top of his class number, big performances in the vertical jump (41.5 inches, tied for second among CBs) and broad jump (11-foot-6, first) showcased the burst that allows him to close up shop on routes and create incompletions. NFL combine: Winners and losers from DB workouts (Winners - Julius Brents, CB, Kansas State: Brents was 6-foot-3 and 198 pounds with ridiculous, offensive-tackle like 34-inch arms at the weigh in. Then he approached rarified Bryon Jones territory with an 11-foot-6 broad which initially reads like a typo but is indeed not. He had an 41.5-inch vertical and ran a solid 4.53 in the 40, too. 2023 Senior Bowl: Tuesday's American Team Practice Report (Kansas State cornerback Julius Brents put together a really nice opening session. In the one-on-ones, Brents did well at running with receivers and using his length to recover. And as we saw Tuesday, oh so feisty.  Receivers had all kinds of problems releasing cleanly off Brents when he lined up in their face in press-coverage. And he surprised me with how sticky he was in space. Thor's 2023 Senior Bowl Preview (Most to Gain: Julius Brents - This class is stocked with large boundary corners. Brents is one of the biggest at 6’3/203. His long arms help him not only jamming off the line and getting his hands on balls at the catch point, but in the run game with an atypically-large tackling radius.  Indeed, Brents is one of this class’ best corners in both run defense and tackling efficiency. He’s difficult to block for receivers, he flies downhill with abandon, and he rarely misses when he’s on the doorstep.  Brents isn’t going to appeal to man-coverage defenses. Brents is listed at 6-foot-4 and certainly looks close to that with his length. At 202 pounds, he can be physically imposing and will control route released when in press man.  There are two issues with Brents on film that will need to get cleared up during Senior Bowl reps. The first is his frustrating lack of ball awareness with the throw in the air. 2023 NFL Draft Stock - Conference Championships (Down - Julius Brents, CB, Kansas State:  Brents was charged with taking on TCU's Quentin Johnston (6-4) in the Big XII Championship. It was a big-versus-big, as Brents is a 6-foot-3 cornerback who moves pretty well for his size. Brents though had a rough outing despite his team coming away with the win. He was called for multiple pass-interference penalties for grabbing downfield, and he dropped an easy interception. The pass was thrown up for grabs like a punt, and Brents let the uncontested catch fall right through his hands. Brents did reel in an interception on an underthrown pass in the end zone. Brents is an insanely long CB, listed at 6’4″, 204 pounds.
