8 players from the Combine who stood out as potential Detroit Lions targets (Jarrett Patterson, OL, Notre Dame:  Patterson is a player the Lions met with formally during the week in Indy, and it’s easy to see his appeal to Detroit. As he noted during his podium interview, Patterson can play any blocking scheme at any interior OL position,  “In 2020, outside zone was the main play we ran. This past year, a lot of inside zone and gap schemes. I’m comfortable in any scheme. It doesn’t matter.”  Patterson also talked about his willingness to grind and his coachability, two things that are scouting catnip for Detroit.  His athletic testing was decent enough for a player who projects as a top interior reserve, a position the Lions need with the free agent status of Evan Brown. NFL Combine Winners and Losers (Losers - Jarrett Patterson, OL, Notre Dame:  Patterson had a forgettable workout, turning in results near the bottom of the offensive line group. At 6-foot-5 and 306 pounds, he displayed very little in the way of explosive athleticism. He ran a 5.33-second 40 with a glacial 1.82-second 10-yard split. His vertical leap of 29.5 inches wasn't great, neither was his 8-foot-10 broad jump. His 3-cone drill (7.96 seconds) and 20-yard shuttle (4.73 seconds) were also not great.) Winners and losers among O-linemen (Losers - Jarrett Patterson, OL, Notre Dame: Patterson is an incredibly experienced, versatile blocker who looks like a fluid athlete on film. He didn't have the best combine performance, finishing near the bottom in most of the drills in which he participated. I did not see that coming. And he did all that a rather sleek 6-foot-5 and 306 pounds. With those dimensions, I expected the Notre Dame alum to test like a much more sudden, explosive athlete.) At the same time, center might be his best position in the NFL, as his projected arm length could be an issue with long 3-techniques. Senior Bowl Recap: Questions Left Unanswered On Final Day By Former Notre Dame Standouts (DAY TO FORGET FOR PATTERSON - After a struggling first day, Patterson put together a rock solid day two of practice on Wednesday. With Thursday being the last live action, there was hopes that he would have a repeat performance or potentially improve on it to end the week. Unfortunately that did not happen.  There simply weren't a ton of positives to take from the dead from the former Notre Dame captain. There were a couple of solid early reps but for the most part, you were left wanting a lot more. Patterson missed a variety of blocks, including some very quick pressures. It was a maddening day.  One of the few positives was a really nice early rep against Wisconsin defensive tackle Keeanu Benton who has looked like a man amongst boys throughout most of the week. Patterson remained patient during their matchup on the pass rush one-on-one.  Patterson played with a solid base, as well as playing with enough bend to redirect effectively to the spin. That was one of the better reps anyone had this week against Benton.  In the run blocking portion of practice, Patterson also had a solid rep against Louisville defensive lineman YaYa Diaby. He was able to establish early leverage and create some movement at the point of attack.  Patterson didn’t finish the rep at the highest rate but still showed a lot of promise throughout. From there, the day got bleak.  In team work, Patterson had a really troubling rep working against Bowling Green defensive lineman Karl Brooks. He played with poor posture and lunged quickly off the snap.  Brooks was able to use a quick club and knock Patterson off balance. It was a quick loss and the lack of length for Patterson really showed up.  Patterson was involved in one of the highlight plays of the day. Unfortunately, he was on the wrong side of the action against Northwestern standout Adetomiwa Adebawore, who had a tremendous week.  There was nothing fancy about it. Adebawore put his head down and went right down Patterson’s chest. He played with poor pad level and bend, resulting in getting driven out of the screen. 2023 Senior Bowl Risers: Darius Rush and Keidron Smith Impress in Final Practice (Jarrett Patterson, OL, Notre Dame: Jarrett Patterson had his best day of the week on Wednesday, lining up at both center and guard. He was one of the few linemen who actually stopped Adetomiwa Adebawore over the past three days. Patterson is strong, blocks with outstanding fundamentals, and played hard through the whistle.) Senior Bowl Recap: Former Notre Dame Stars Show Big Improvement On Day Two (BOUNCE BACK DAY FOR PATTERSON - Patterson did just that. After spending a lot of time at guard on Day One, he saw a heavy dose of reps at center during the second practice. That was a big opportunity for Patterson, who looked much more comfortable at his natural position, while also showing serious growth at guard.  The one-on-one pass rush portion of practice was much more consistent for Patterson. He had a bad habit of stopping his feet on contact and losing his base in the first practice. It was much better on Wednesday.  His best rep of the day may have come at center, where he was able to establish leverage quickly against Coastal Carolina nose tackle Jerrod Clark. He quickly gained control of the rep and washed Clark out.  Patterson maintained body positioning throughout the play. He stayed attached and didn’t allow Clark to counter of get back into the play.  In one of the toughest matchups of the day, Patterson also faced off against Wisconsin defensive tackle Keeanu Benton, who is arguably the top defensive lineman in attendance this week. Patterson was up for the challenge, again gaining early leverage in the battle.  With a quick punch and nice foot quickness, he got Benton working up the field. When he attempted to counter back inside, Patterson had enough foot quickness to redirect. It wasn’t a perfect rep but it was one of the better reps against Benton all week:  When he got to the team portion of practice, Patterson was clearly more confident. He had a tremendous segment working in 11-on-11 action, showing patience and athleticism to work up to the second level.  Patterson routinely got his body in much better positioning during this practice. He was concise, confident and was trusting what was happening around him. 8:05 p.m. — Just a few years ago, Notre Dame center Jarrett Patterson was projected by some as a top-45 selection. Since then, injury and poor play have plagued Patterson, and scouts have not been impressed with his play recently.  Entering the season, scouts I spoke with had a fifth-round grade on Patterson, yet in recent conversations, they’ve downgraded the senior a full round, pushing him into the Round 6 frame. Lions draft watch: Clemson vs. Notre Dame scouting preview (Notre Dame OL Jarrett Patterson:  Not to be confused with the diminutive former Buffalo Bulls running back, Patterson has helped key the Notre Dame ground game. This is his first season playing guard after starting over 30 games at center, and the 6-foot-4, 310-pound grad student has fared well despite missing time over the summer with a foot injury.  Due to his size, Patterson projects better to the NFL at guard, and his early returns playing left guard solidify him as a prospect who should come off the board between picks 75 and 125.
