Tight Ends for Lions to Watch at 2023 NFL Scouting Combine (Payne Durham, Purdue: Durham was one of the better performers at the Senior Bowl, making highlight-reel catches and winning multiple one-on-one reps. A diving catch made in the team portion of practices was one of the week’s best highlights. The Purdue product needs fine-tuning, but there’s plenty to like about what he’s put on tape. 2023 NFL Draft: Prospects who could shine at the scouting combine (Payne Durham, TE, Purdue: Payne Durham will blow some evaluators away with his catching this week. With his best trait being blocking, it’s going to be a pleasant surprise to see how much his athleticism will help raise his stock. Durham is not a super fluid or agile mover, but he can get separation at all three levels, off the line of scrimmage, at his breaks and at the catch point. He can also concentrate when catching while on the move, and hold onto the ball through contact. During the Senior Bowl practices, he had one of the best touchdowns of the entire week. He’s also shown the ability to move with the ball in his hands post catch. In the clip below he is running a towards the sideline, catches and stride and hurdles a defender to gain a few extra yards. This is very unusual for a blocking tight end. Durham has 560 receiving yards in the 2022 season with an average of 10 yards per reception and a 72.7 catching percentage. As of today, PFF does not have Durham in the top ten, and Walterfootball had him sitting at 17th. But there is a good chance that he could rise up the boards after preforming ‘corner route’ and redzone’ drills. Durham will have the chance to show off his catch radius, field awareness and skillset in the open space.) 2023 NFL Draft: Assessing the Tight Ends at the 2023 Senior Bowl (The National Team featured three tight ends: Clemson’s Davis Allen, Purdue’s Payne Durham, and Cincinnati’s Josh Whyle. Allen and Whyle went into the week as potential fifth or sixth-rounders, while Durham was not on many analysts’ draft radars. Durham is now on those draft radars. The Purdue standout began the week with tremendous reps as a blocker in the one-on-ones. Then, over the course of the practice sessions and into the game, Durham showcased his ability as a receiver—including a terrific touchdown catch in the game itself. Durham made himself some money in Mobile and now projects as at least a late-round tight end who will almost certainly make a preseason roster. 2023 NFL Draft: Five takeaways from National's 27-10 win over American in Senior Bowl (3. Payne Durham did a little of everything - The Purdue tight end is on the short list of players who helped themselves the most this week at the Senior Bowl. Durham appeared to improve with each day during practice and might have saved his best for Saturday's game. Durham caught two passes for 24 yards and hauled in a two-point conversion for the National team, showing off impressive athleticism for a 258-pounder. There were a few times he was moved as a blocker in the game (and during the week's practices), but he also had some wins in that department. His first grab in traffic from Haener -- they made a nice tandem all week -- was thrown a little bit behind Durham. And his second catch was a pretty 16-yarder down to the American team's 1-yard line, just missing a score. He scored the two-point conversion on Cunningham's TD run, racing across the formation to gain easy separation, and also took a handoff when the National team was backed up inside its 1-yard line early on, gaining two yards. It unquestionably was a productive week for Durham, who at times outshined the more ballyhooed Luke Musgrave (Oregon State) in the buzz department, making several contested catches this week. Jake Haener MVP as National Team rolls (Payne Durham, TE, Purdue: We talked Thursday about the progress Durham made during the week, and the sure hands that showed up this season for the Boilermakers were here in Mobile too. He had just two catches for 24 yards on the stat sheet, but one was this close to being a touchdown -- instead, it was just a good back-shoulder catch on a good throw from quarterback Malik Cunningham. Durham also made a touch catch in traffic -- and then there was the catch that didn't show up in the box score; he hauled in a pass from Cunningham to successfully complete the two-point try after the National team scored it's second touchdown.) Senior Bowl Day 3 observations: Another unremarkable practice for quarterbacks (Hall and Heaner were much better than Cunningham, with each hitting a couple of big plays to Purdue tight end Payne Durham, who was among the best players for the National squad to end practices. Like Day 2, though, Hall had enough flash plays to put some good tape into existence. He hit Durham on a rollout touchdown pass from 20 yards out, then made an impressive high-point throw to the tight end for a big gain. That was an NFL throw, with Durham blanketed by three defenders within reach. Haener shined in full team drills with more breathing room, though. He completed three-of-four passes and showed some slipperiness on the rollout while throwing touchdowns to Durham and Bell. Durham’s catch was the no-doubter play of the day, with the tight end fully extending for the ball, making the catch despite his helmet flying off after smacking the turf. Speaking of Durham. He was really good on Day 3 after a couple of quiet showings. Likely among the best players on the field, at least during the first session. And he was the top target for multiple quarterbacks, with Hall and Haener’s best moments coming when throwing his way. 2023 NFL Draft: Brenton Cox Jr., Robert Beal Highlight Shrine Bowl’s Early Commits (Purdue Tandem of Aidan O’Connell and Payne Durham Poised To Impress - Less than two dozen Shrine Bowl acceptances have been announced to this point. But already, three Purdue players have joined the fray. On defense, cornerback Cory Trice was recently announced. But the tandem of Aidan O’Connell and Payne Durham will draw particular attention from teams looking for offensive talent. Together, O’Connell and Durham have forged a prolific combination with the Boilermakers. It was incredibly distinct in the team’s win over ranked Illinois earlier this month, when Durham had seven catches for 70 yards and two scores. But they’ve been doing this for a long time, and they’ll get a chance to keep doing it in Vegas. O’Connell, at times, feels overlooked in the 2023 NFL Draft QB class. But for Galko, he brings all the operational tools you need to have a quality NFL quarterback. “O’Connell reminds me so much of Jimmy Garoppolo and Kirk Cousins as a quarterback,” Galko extrapolated. “Both those guys have started a long time in the NFL, but both those guys are really smooth operators in the pocket, have a really quick release. You can clean up a few things with Aidan for sure, but I would rest easy at night if Aidan O’Connell was in my QB room. I think a lot of NFL teams think the same there.” O’Connell’s story at Purdue is inspiring. A former walk-on, he worked his way into not only securing a roster spot but eventually earning a starting opportunity. When he had that opportunity, he ran with it, earning All-Big Ten honors in 2021 and carrying his production into 2022. Galko says O’Connell’s mentality is a definite strong point, but that’s not all he brings. “I think he’ll have a great Shrine Bowl. Not only in the interview room, but he’ll be really impressive, because he can adapt to all types of receivers very, very quickly,” Galko expanded. “I was actually talking to Aidan and one of his QB coaches the other day — I remember seeing Garoppolo and Derek Carr side-by-side at an all-star game. I remember watching Carr and how impressive he was physically, but watching Garoppolo get to his spot cleaner, get the ball out quicker, and get it there on time. While some guys might have stronger arms than guys like Garoppolo and O’Connell, Aidan’s a guy who can get the ball out quicker with decisiveness and play with great anticipation, too.” We’ve seen what O’Connell and Durham can do together with their timing and chemistry. O’Connell’s own accuracy and consistency help maximize Durham’s gifts. But Galko also makes a point to give Durham his respect as a 2023 NFL Draft prospect in his own right. Durham has been great in 2022 — boxing out undersized linebackers and safeties, winning on five-yard routes, and blocking with force. “I haven’t spoken to a single NFL team that doesn’t like Durham,” Galko relayed. “They vary on grades, but everyone says that can play in our offense tomorrow. I think Payne is one of the safest tight ends in this draft class, and I think he and Aidan will have a lot of fun together.” There’s still a lot of work left to do before the Shrine Bowl’s 2023 roster is settled. Apparently, no one told Durham that Illinois had the nation’s top-ranked pass defense because he hauled in seven receptions for 70 yards and two scores against them.
