2023 NFL Draft Week Rumors Friday (Sources with NFL teams were not surprised that Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs went as a top-20 pick, because they viewed Gibbs as one of the few players with an elite grade in the 2023 NFL Draft. Interestingly, sources with the Jets say their team was planning on taking Gibbs with the 15th pick. They felt he was too much of a playmaker to pass on, and he would have been a tremendous receiving back for Aaron Rodgers to work with. Gibbs also is a very good pass blocker who could have helped the aging quarterback. The Jets took Breece Hall in the second round last year, but Hall is coming off a serious injury, and having a potent rushing attack with a two-headed monster would obviously have helped the Jets set up good down-and-distance situations for Rodgers. After the Lions took Gibbs with the 12th pick and the offensive linemen went off the board, the Jets felt that Will McDonald was the best value available and could help them field a dangerous edge rush group.) 2023 NFL Draft Week Rumors Thursday (One player who has gone under-hyped during the 2023 NFL Draft process is Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Many teams use a color-based grade scale, with Blue signifying an elite starter, Red/Warm marking a good starter, Red indicating a solid starter, and below that are backup quality players. The 2023 NFL Draft is not especially strong, and Gibbs is one of the few players who received a blue grade. Multiple team sources feel Gibbs could be an Alvin Kamara- or Jamaal Charles-type running back in the NFL. The other consensus blue players in the 2023 NFL Draft are Bijan Robinson, Will Anderson, Tyree Wilson and Jalen Carter. Some teams gave blue grades to Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Devon Witherspoon. Some teams, meanwhile, did not have Anderson and Wilson with blue grades and had them as red/warm.  With Gibbs being one of the only consensus blue prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft, in all likelihood he is going to go much higher than expected tonight. Along with being an ultra-fast running back, Gibbs is a phenomenal receiving weapon who can be used out of the slot like Kamara. Gibbs also can serve as a kick returner. He is tough, strong, fast, and has great character on and off the field. There are a lot of teams that are interested in Gibbs. While he might be a surprise top-20 pick to the media and fans, it won't be a surprise to teams if Gibbs goes that high.) 5 bold predictions for the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft (Two running backs are off the board before two wide receivers - It’s almost unthinkable to say there will be more running backs selected in the first round than wide receivers. In 2022, we had six wide receivers in the first round and no running backs. In 2021, we had five wide receivers and two running backs. In 2020, we had six wide receivers and one running back. But every class is constructed differently, and this year it’s built in a manner that could yield two running back selections and either one or two receivers.  Jaxon Smith-Njigba seems to be the only wide receiver the NFL is comfortable with (at a consensus level) taking in the first round. Zay Flowers, Quentin Johnston and Jordan Addison are candidates to be first-round picks, but I wouldn’t say any are guaranteed.  On the flip side, we know Bijan Robinson is going in Round 1. And as the clock ticks closer to the draft, we’ve also heard Jahmyr Gibbs is a strong candidate for the first round. I expect Robinson to be a top-15 pick, and I don’t think Gibbs will be far behind. Buying or selling the biggest draft rumors (Rumor: Jahmyr Gibbs is a first-round pick - The headline for this year's running back class is Bijan Robinson, but he may not be the only running back taken in the first round. Robinson is considered a lock to be taken on opening night, but Peter King reports there are a few teams in this draft that like Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs over him!  Gibbs was third in the SEC in scrimmage yards last season with 1,370. What stands out about Gibbs as a prospect is his pass-catching ability and how he makes people miss. I already feel sorry for the linebackers that will have to pick him up in coverage. Maybe he's not as "complete" of a back as Robinson, but it's hard not to believe this guy would automatically contribute to your offense.  King continues, saying that Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel would love to trade up into the first round to grab Gibbs if he could. If the Dolphins think of Gibbs that highly, I bet there are a couple other teams that share those feelings as well. Maybe one of those teams has a first-round pick to utilize. I'm buying this rumor. There are random developments we get late in the draft process every year that end up being true. 2023 NFL Draft: The top 8 running backs (2. Jahmyr Gibbs, Alabama (Height: 5′ 9⅛” (25th percentile), Weight: 199 (14th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.36 (97th), 10-Yard Split: 1.52 (83rd), Vertical Jump: 33½” (37th), Wingspan: 74⅛” (46th), Arm Length: 30½” (35th), Hand Size: 9¼” (47th)) - Bio: Gibbs overcame financial insecurity as a child and young adult, became an early star at Dalton High School in Dalton, Georgia. He earned All-State and All-American honors as a senior, and was named Georgia’s Mr. Football in 2019. Gibbs, who also excelled in basketball and track, was a four-star recruit and committed to Georgia Tech — primarily because he had developed a relationship with running backs coach and former NFL running back Tashard Choice. An immediate star as a running back and return man, Gibbs transferred to Alabama for the 2022 season.  Over three seasons with the Yellowjackets and the Crimson Tide, Gibbs totaled 2,139 yards and 15 touchdowns on 383 carries, adding 103 receptions on 123 targets for 1,215 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2022, he had 391 snaps in the backfield, 18 in the slot, four out wide, and two inline.  Stat to Know: Gibbs leads all NCAA running backs over the last three seasons with 25 catches of 15 or more yards, and 39 forced missed tackles on receptions.  Strengths: Gibbs had 31 explosive plays last season on just 192 touches in 2022, which gives you a basic idea of how he is as a player. You love the deep receptions, of course, but I had to put this 60-yard catch against Kansas State in the Sugar Bowl. This is a seemingly simple short crosser, but from Gibbs just disintegrating linebacker Austin Moore with a preposterous foot fake, to the “I’m open” move, to the speed after the catch, to the acceleration up the boundary, Gibbs is clearly a player who can creative explosives out of plays a lot of running backs just couldn’t.  Gibbs blends appealing contact balance for his size with elite lateral agility, and the kind of multi-directional speed that will leave defenders in his dust. Add a level of vision that a lot of backs would envy, and it’s a very complete package.  Weaknesses: Gibbs’ size and prediction for getting into release routes out of the backfield makes him a less than optimal pass-blocker; he’s more of an innocent bystander than an interested party.  Conclusion: If you’re selecting Jahmyr Gibbs for your NFL team, probably in the bottom of the first round or the top of the second, you’re not doing that because you want a headbanger who impose his will on enemy defenses. You are doing so because you want to add an offensive weapon who has a proven ability to maximize his athletic attributes everywhere from the backfield to the slot to out wide, with possible further development along the way. He’s a prototype player for any team looking for elements in their running back that brings to mind anybody from Brian Westbrook to Le’Veon Bell.  NFL Comparison: Alvin Kamara. It’s the obvious comparison, it’s the one everybody is using, and while I could try to be cute and go elsewhere, it just makes too much sense. Selected by the Saints in the third round of the 2017 draft, Kamara was the ideal lightning/satellite back in Sean Payton’s offense. Payton helped to force the advent of the base nickel defense by moving Reggie Bush from the backfield to the slot, Kamara was a furtherance of that paradigm, and in a lot of ways, Gibbs is the next step in the progression — or, at the very least, a very good copy of the original.) (Eric Edholm - PICK: Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama.  Gibbs might be the obvious answer, given that we've only had four running backs drafted in the first round in the past four years: Josh Jacobs (2019), Clyde Edwards-Helaire (2020), Najee Harris and Travis Etienne (2021). But Gibbs' ability to shift gears and catch the ball well make him an ideal specialist. Give him 15 touches per game and watch him thrive; that's a reasonable, Tony Pollard-ish workload. Gibbs is 21 years old with only 530 college touches under his belt. Any time he touches the ball, he’s a threat to score. At the NFL Combine, Gibbs ran a 4.36 40-yard dash which was the second-fastest time among all RBs—behind only Devon Achane, who we’ll get to later. In the passing game, he is a complete mismatch against linebackers and safeties and graded out as one of the best receiving RBs via Pro Football Focus. 2023 NFL draft: Louis Riddick's favorite prospects, sleepers (My Favorite Prospects - Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama:  When you find a true three-down running back who can run inside or outside, has the elusiveness to make you miss in the open field and shows the speed to go the distance, you take him. And you do it early in the draft. And that's especially true when that same running back is a true third-down threat as a receiver. Gibbs will be among the best pass-catching backs in the NFL the moment he's drafted. I'd get him involved out on the edge on wide zone runs, hit him on halfback screens and flank him out against safeties and Will linebackers. Because once Gibbs gets in space, he's gone.  Sure, he's only 5-foot-9 and 199 pounds, but he will give you all 199 pounds. He'll dip and lower his shoulder on you. And most of that attention has centered on one outside name in the form of Texas running back Bijan Robinson.  Alabama’s Jahmyr Gibbs garners attention from others as a potential late first-rounder. And that makes sense because Gibbs is all about that dynamic ability he can bring to an offense, with electric cuts and impressive receiving ability.  The Georgia Tech transfer spent one year in Tuscaloosa, running for 926 yards and seven touchdowns, adding 444 receiving yards and another three scores. That’s consistent with his 2021 numbers for the Yellow Jackets, even more impressive coming from inside the SEC. Pro Football Focus had Gibbs dropping only two passes on 105 “catchable” targets in college. He’s a speedy playmaker who could grab some headlines with an eye-popping night in the splits and fan-friendly 40-yard dash.  On that note, Gibbs was asked if the 40-yard dash is overrated, saying he doesn’t think so. What We Learned: 8 combine takeaways from Sat. (5. Pass-catching RB optimistic about potential usage at next level: Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs most frequently hears folks compare him to NFL stars Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara.  Such comparisons leave his draft range somewhere between the first and third rounds. He's currently the 28th-best prospect on Daniel Jeremiah's top 50 list and the No. 2 running back in Bucky Brooks' position rankings, but the Kamara comparison, while prevalent, also diminishes his ceiling a bit, relegating Gibbs to a projection of a spark-providing second running back in most NFL offenses.  Add in the gradual devaluation of running backs in the draft, and it's tough to project where Gibbs might land. He was asked about this trend at his position Saturday at the NFL Scouting Combine and explained that he surprisingly sees a bright future for running backs because of how their roles have changed in NFL offenses.  "I think a lot of reasons why running backs didn't have a long span in the NFL is because of how the offenses were ran back in the day," Gibbs said. "A lot of Power I stuff, a lot of power stuff, just really in between the tackles. Offense has changed and it's going to keep changing. Us being evolved in more of the passing game is going to allow us to have a longer span over the course of our career."  Gibbs has proven he can be a weapon in the passing game, finishing third in receiving yards at Alabama in 2022 with 444 on 44 receptions. He also led the Crimson Tide in rushing, averaging 6.1 yards per carry on 151 attempts, making for an all-purpose star who should be an ideal third-down back in the NFL.  That type of player typically isn't a first-round pick, meaning a team might find value in Gibbs in later rounds -- just as the Saints did with Kamara in the third round of the 2017 draft. He manipulates defenders very well in space but can look indecisive on the interior as if he's anticipating contact and not flowing naturally. A natural receiver who instant accelerates upon the catch and is dynamic in the open field. Tendency to string out runs on the outside with speed rather than wait for an opening to cut through. He's not going to be seeing 15+ carries on the NFL level and is best suited as a swiss-army knife who lines up all over the formation and receives quick hits out of the backfield that serve as extended handoffs. Gibbs has never had a 1,000-yard rushing season in college for a reason, but averaged 8.5 total yards per touch in the second half of the season, the 2nd best mark nationally (Donovan Edwards #1 w/9.5). Gibbs is not a three-down back. Even at a Georgia Tech program starved for playmakers as deposed HC Geoff Collins transitioned from the option to a more contemporary offense, he recorded 20 carries just once while averaging four rushing touchdowns per season and splitting time with Jordan Mason. I certainly see the reasoning in Gibbs as RB2, but with his lack of heft, I have a hard time imagining he's going to power through the interior of an NFL defensive front when he wasn't even called upon to do that for a talent-starved team in Georgia Tech. Instead of taking the alpha role, Gibbs split time with Jordan Mason. His collegiate usage leads me to believe he will not be able to see consistent playing time outside of 10 carries and a handful of manufactured receptions per game. While Gibbs is the second-most talented back in the class, his dimensions could very well preclude him from being the second-most productive RB when we look back in 5 years. He's so reliable as a pass-catcher that he could see time at receiver, often lining up on the perimeter. Collects the ball softly and smoothly in one motion, starring in the quick screen game. Has been a legitimate big-play specialist with 10 combined carries and catches (four and six respectively) of 40-plus yards over his career. He's also shown excellent ball security with just four fumbles over his career.  Concerns: Gibbs lacks the bulk and knockdown power teams would prefer from a true bell-cow runner. He doesn't lack for toughness, taking on would-be tacklers with a full head of steam but too often does so with his pads too high, absorbing bigger hits than he should and failing to fall forward to finish his runs adequately. He needs to do a better job in pass protection, showing just average anticipation and physicality in this area. Bottom Line: The quintessential "air back" of this class, Gibbs' game is beautifully suited to today's up-tempo game, showing the ability to attack defenses as a runner, receiver and returner. RB is a position that doesn’t always get its due in the modern NFL. But the 2023 group has a chance to be truly special. 2023 NFL Draft Stock - Week 5 (Up - Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama:  Against Arkansas, Gibbs showed why he is a future NFL starter. He ran well in the early going, showing his shifty cutting skills and slashing ability. Gibbs continued to run well and contributed in the passing game before breaking the game wide open. Early in the fourth quarter, Gibbs took a carry around the right side and found a gaping cutback lane to explode down the field for a 72-yard touchdown. He did nearly the same thing again a few minutes later, taking a run off the left tackle and exploding down the field for a 76-yard touchdown, going virtually untouched. 2023 NFL Draft Stock - Week 2 (Up - Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama:  Aside from Bryce Young, Alabama's best offensive weapon against the Longhorns was running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs did not find a lot of running lanes against the fierce Texas defense, but he put together a superb game as a receiver. In the first half, Gibbs helped get Alabama the lead by using back-to-back plays to notch 33 yards on two receptions, using his speed to get downfield and his strength to break tackles. Multiple times, Gibbs came through with clutch third-down catches that moved the chains. However, Gibbs also had a misdiagnosis on blitz protection to go for the wrong defender, and that allowed a third-down sack which forced a punt.  Gibbs came back to make a huge reception late in the fourth quarter to help get Alabama across midfield for a gain of about 20 yards. Gibbs totalled 22 yards on nine carries, but he lead the Crimson Tide in receiving with 74 yards and a touchdown on nine receptions.  For the NFL, Gibbs looks like a starter who is worthy of consideration late in the first round or in the second round. He was very impressive as a receiver against Texas, showing that he runs fluid routes, has soft hands, and does a nice job of adjusting to the ball. The Tide reload better than anybody, and following the departure of 5th-year Senior Brian Robinson Jr, they hit the portal for fresh talent to add to their backfield. Gibbs will take the lion's share of carries for the Tide in 2022.  Gibbs totaled 746 yards and four touchdowns on the ground for Georgia Tech in 2021. 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Notebook: What defines a prospect as a ‘sleeper’ vs. ‘breakout’? (What stands out for guys like Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs?  It’s also clear that while RBs can independently create, they are, by their nature, more dependent on their surroundings — mainly their blocking and the density of the boxes they face. So yes, running backs are relatively replaceable because of their relative dependence on their surroundings. But are there select traits found in specific RBs that make them more valuable than their counterparts?  That’s a question I’ve been revisiting through the early stages of the 2023 NFL Draft cycle. It’s a question that becomes even more intriguing when looking at prospects like Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs.  Both Robinson and Gibbs are phenomenal prospects, and a few foundational traits stand out when observing their tape. Quick processing is a staple for both. In Robinson’s case, the 6’0”, 220-pound back is a master of space manipulation. He feels lanes so quickly and so effortlessly. He navigates through those lanes with smooth athleticism and quick cuts. In doing so, Robinson can actually compensate for poor OL play, just as strong OL play can elevate mid-level running backs.  Drawing from the tape of exceptional RB prospects, you can start to gain an understanding of what traits to look for in first-round worthy RBs. Yes, the position simply isn’t as inherently valuable as others. But running backs with a combination of high-end athleticism and high-level processing and reaction ability are those who can supersede their dependence on blocking and other external factors.  And if those backs provide value in the passing game, as Robinson and Gibbs do? College Football’s Top 3 Running Backs Heading into 2022 (RB Jahmyr Gibbs, Alabama:  Gibbs is a transfer running back from Georgia Tech who was without a doubt the best player on the Yellow Jackets team and since he arrived on campus as a freshman, he had been making spectacular plays that showcased just how special of an athlete he is. At Georgia Tech, a lot of Gibbs’ potential production was muzzled simply because of the lack of talent around him and the flat-out mismatches that would occur when his offensive line would attempt to block defensive lines like Georgia or Clemson. But I believe that the transfer to Alabama will allow Gibbs to showcase his skillset in front of all of college football running backs. Gibbs is an electric runner with the ball in his hands whose speed just jumps off the film. He has the speed to outrun angles and the smooth lateral cuts to be a true weapon in the open field. Gibbs also shows to be a mismatch coming out of the backfield and could be used as a reliable receiver in the Tide’s offense. Combining Gibbs skillset with this Alabama offense that already operates at a high level should produce a great season for Gibbs. Running backs to watch for the 2023 NFL draft (Jahmyr Gibbs, Alabama:  Another player with a chance to shine on the SEC stage this fall is Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Originally graded as a three-star prospect out of Dalton High School in Dalton, Georgia, Gibbs committed to play at Georgia Tech at the end of his junior season. But after a senior season that saw him lead the state with 2,554 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns, Gibbs was re-rated as a four-star recruit and offers from Florida, Georgia and Alabama came rolling in.  He remained committed to Georgia Tech, and enrolled for the 2020 season. On his first play in college, he returned a kickoff 75 yards against Central Florida. He finished his true freshman season having gained 460 yards on 89 rushing attempts, scoring four times on the ground.  This past season, Gibbs played in 12 games for the Yellow Jackets, rushing 143 times for 746 yards and four scores. He was named a First-Team All-ACC player, as well as a Second-Team All-American.  He entered the transfer portal at the end of Georgia Tech’s season, and announced in December that he would be playing for Nick Saban at Alabama.  A big trait that weighs in his favor is his versatility. Gibbs is a weapon whether the ball is on the ground or in the air, and also contributes on special teams.
