2023 NFL Draft: The top 8 interior offensive linemen (4. O'Cyrus Torrence, OG, Florida (Height: 6′ 5⅜” (85th percentile), Weight: 330 (87th), 40-Yard Dash: 5.31 (47th), 10-Yard Split: 1.84 (35th), Bench Press: 23 reps (33rd), Vertical Jump: 23½” (8th), Broad Jump: 101″ (50th), 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.81 (41st), Wingspan: 83⅞” (96th), Arm Length: 33⅞” (74th), Hand Size: 11¼” (98th)) - Bio: A three-star recruit out of (St. Helena Central High in Greensburg, Louisiana, Torrence played football in high school in part to get in shape (he weighed 420 pounds at one point), and he received nothing but smaller-school offers. He chose Louisiana, making Freshman All-American in 2019, and First Team All-Sun Belt in 2021. The move to Florida was an unqualified success in 2022 — Torrence was a Consensus All-American and First Team All-SEC. In 2022 for the Gators, blocking for Anthony Richardson, Torrence allowed no sacks, no quarterback hits, and eight quarterback hurries in 355 pass-blocking reps. Stat to Know: Torrence’s Blown Block Rate of 1% is the lowest for any collegiate guard on this list. Strengths: When Torrence moves you in the run game, you tend to stay moved. He has an incredibly powerful base, and excellent upper-body strength to displace defensive tackles where he wants them to go. Torrence’s better pass-protection snaps, especially on deep passes, are full of pure power. Other guards might want to focus on picking up a stunt or blitz; Torrence is just as likely to block everybody in front of him to put the argument to rest. Torrance is also more than capable of taking the best a defensive tackle has to give him when he’s backing up, and erasing that defensive tackle from the play. Even better NFL defensive tackles will need an extra bowl of Wheaties before taking him head-up. The dude is just comically strong. Weaknesses: It’s a good thing that Torrence can block two guys at once. Perhaps it’s an adaptive strategy, because he does struggle with picking up stunts and games and overloaded fronts on the move. For the most part, Torrence is not really laterally adept. Torrence is going to have to work on his ability to pick anything up to either side — it’s a problem with single-blockers, as well. More experienced defensive linemen at the NFL level, whose entire job is based on identifying and exploiting obvious weaknesses, will absolutely eat his lunch with this stuff. Conclusion: If you run the offensive line for a gap-based power offense (hello, Ravens), Torrence might be the top guard on your board. He has the power to shut down just about anybody. But if you need the kind of lateral agility and movement skills common to guards who excel in more complicates schemes, he could he a short-term to long-term project. Torrence’s strength to and through contact is the best in this class among any offensive lineman, but he won’t be able to trade on that alone when he gets to the NFL. NFL Comparison: Mike Iupati. Selected with the 17th overall pick in the 2010 draft out of Idaho, Iupati was a massive (6-foot-5, 331-pound) guard who won far more with power than speed and agility. There is still a place for those big earthmovers in today’s NFL (Iupati made four Pro Bowls and had one All-Pro nod) as long as they have enough athleticism to get past the obvious transitive issues with this kind of size and strength. 2023 NFL Draft: Ranking the top OL fits for the Lions (Tier 2 - O’Cyrus Torrence (Florida), 6-foot-5, 330 pounds: Though Avila and Torrence are both slotted around the early second round range, they have juxtaposing styles and win in different ways. Where Avila is more of a technician and a pass pro specialist right now, Torrence is an absolute mauler in the run game. His hands are massive (98 percentile) and are like vice grips. Once he locks onto you, it’s over. Torrence has gone on the record saying he’s the “most dominant interior offensive lineman” in this draft, and he may be right. But in the passing game, he still has some work to do. Despite the impressive production (zero sacks given up in 1,501 pass blocking snaps), he may have some struggles at the NFL level due to his average athleticism and foot quickness. The Lions also plan on meeting with Torrence with one of their top-30 visits. He is grit and strength personified, so I can see the coaching staff really falling in love with him. How he fits: A guard through and through. Three years of starting experience at right guard, one year at left. Good insurance if/when injuries start to pile up if he can’t win the starting RG job outright. A less-discussed Gators prospect, Torrence could join RIchardson in Round 1 come April. The Florida guard, an All-American for the Gators last season, has been on the rise since transferring from Louisiana last year as a mauling, hulking interior blocker. (In a nice touch, Torrence even gave a nod to his former school by wearing one cleat with each of his colleges' colors.) According to Pelissero, Torrence had dinner with the Titans on Wednesday night and meetings around pro day this week with the Rams, Falcons and Saints. The 6-foot-5, 336-pound Torrence is not known for his athleticism, turning in so-so testing numbers at the combine and reportedly running a 8.13-second three-cone drill, which would put him in the bottom 20th percentile for that workout. But following a strong season in the SEC and a quality performance at the Senior Bowl, Torrence figures to be a top-50 selection at worst. Torrence, however, sold himself as one of the best players at his position in this draft class. In fact, he’s probably a more viable option at No. 18 than No. 48 for Detroit, but the massive Louisiana transfer gets the nod here for the second round. Torrence is an imposing 6-foot-5 and 330 pounds with giant (11 ¼”) hands and powerful arms. He’s a little stiff moving laterally and his recovery footwork and range aren’t great, but there isn’t a better people-mover in the run game in this draft. 2023 NFL Draft guard-center rankings: Peter Skoronski the clear top prospect (4. O'Cyrus Torrence, Florida, Guard, 6-5, 330, Senior - Overview: A three-star recruit out of Greensburg, Louisiana, Torrence signed with then-Louisiana Ragin Cajuns' head coach Billy Napier in 2019 and was immediately inserted into the starting lineup at right guard, becoming the first true freshman offensive lineman at the program since 2004 to start a game. He'd go on to earn Second and then First-team All-Sun Belt honors as a sophomore and junior before taking the biggest gamble of his college career, taking a massive leap in competition by transferring to Florida to join Napier, who'd been hired as the Gators' head coach. Both literally and figuratively, Torrence emerged as one of the biggest stories of the fall from a scouting perspective, becoming the first guard at Florida ever to be named a consensus All-American. He also is the proud owner of one of the most remarkable statistics of the 2023 NFL draft class — having never surrendered a single sack over his college career, according to PFF. Strengths: Torrence is a hulking man with broad shoulders and thick limbs, including long arms (33 7/8) and catcher's mitts for hands (11 ¼"). He's much stronger than the 23 repetitions in the bench press would suggest, using those big hands to snatch opponents, often sustaining his initial grip for the duration of the rep. Broad as a barn door and maintains points of contact with his opponent, leaving few opportunities for pass rushers to gather much momentum. For such a big man, Torrence flashes surprising initial quickness and short-area agility, slipping from his initial responsibility at the line of scrimmage to the second-level efficiently on combo blocks. He's durable with no known injury concerns. Torrence started all 46 games in which he played over his college career. He also turned some critics into believers with a stellar week at the Senior Bowl. Concerns: Torrence played just one position (right guard) and in one run-heavy scheme his entire career. He won't be seen as a fit in some NFL offenses. He had a pretty sloppy frame for most of his college career, though to his credit, Torrence shed some of the extra weight prior to the Senior Bowl, where he weighed in at 337 pounds and the Combine (330) after being listed at Florida at 347. He flashes good initial quickness off the snap but is far too inconsistent in this area, too often ranking as the last of the Gators' blockers off the ball. He can be downright sluggish off the snap and lacks the flexibility of some of the other blockers on this list, relying on his width and grip strength to recover. He's also slower in recognizing twists and stunts than his starting experience would suggest. Bottom Line: The analytics on Torrence are misleading. He's enjoyed such incredible success in pass protection, in large part, due to three reasons 1) his grip strength 2) his broad frame and, not insignificantly, the fact that he's blocked for two very mobile quarterbacks in Anthony Richardson and Levi Lewis (at Louisiana), who ran for a combined 19 touchdowns during his three seasons as a starter. Torrence has some starting-caliber qualities but he's not the sure thing his stats and hype elsewhere might lead you to believe. Just look at what the Lions have already built. 8:50 p.m.: When Billy Napier accepted the head coaching job at Florida, the thought process was he’d bring along a bunch of his former players from Louisiana via the transfer portal.One of those players who followed Napier was O’Cyrus Torrence, presently the starting right guard for the Gators, and the senior has been very impressive. Torrence has an NFL build, blocks with great fundamentals, and is strong as an ox. The ability to get to the second level and block in motion has really surprised me, especially considering Torrence tips the scales in excess of 340 pounds.
