2023 NFL Draft: The top 8 running backs (5. Devon Achane, Texas A&M (Height: 5′ 8¾” (13th percentile), Weight: 188 (3rd), 40-Yard Dash: 4.32 (98th), 10-Yard Split: 1.51 (86th), Vertical Jump: 33″ (31st), Arm Length: 29″ (4th), Hand Size: 8½” (5th)) - Bio: A four-star recruit out of Marshall High in Missouri City, Texas, Achane wasn’t just a football star — he also helped Marshall to two straight state track championships, was the 2020 Gatorade Texas Track & Field Athlete of the Year, and posted the fastest times in the country in the 200-meter run and the 4×100 relay. He chose Texas A&M over offers from Alabama, Florida State, Houston, and LSU. Achane started with a bang, winning the Most Valuable Player award in A&M’s Cotton Bowl win over North Carolina at the end of his freshman season. Over three years with the Aggies, Achane gained 2,376 yards and scored 21 touchdowns on 369 carries, adding 65 catches for 554 yards and five touchdowns. He also returned 20 kicks for 613 yards and two touchdowns — a 96-yarder in 2021, and a 95-yarder in 2022.  Stat to Know: Last season, Achane had 18 runs of 15 or more yards on 196 carries.  Strengths: You want the track background to show up on Achane’s football tape, and it certainly does — not only with his straight-line speed, but with some preposterous moves to render defenders motionless, wondering what just happened. LSU safety Joe Foucha experienced that unpleasant sensation when Achane just whipped around him on this 10-yard touchdown run.  Achane can also bang it inside on zone or gap concepts, and he’s eager to exploit any opening. I would love to see him in an NFL offense with pulling and sweeping linemen, just blasting those gaps so that he can start the speed show. He shows a nice combination of patience and burst in those moments.  You can extend Achane’s exploitation of openings to the passing game; anything open on the edge, and he’s gone. This is a good time to mention that he forced 53 missed tackles last season. So, not just a speed guy.  Weaknesses: There are many things Achane does well on the field. Let’s just say that blocking is… not one of them. At all. Per PFF, he allowed two sacks and 10 total pressures in 2022. As much as his burner speed will put him on the field, that might take him right off.  Conclusion: Achane’s athleticism has been touted for a long time, that praise is well-deserved, and he can deploy it at a level that puts defenses in a box more often than defenses would like. He’s got surprising after-contact power for his size, there’s potential as a receiver, and though his blocking is absolutely abysmal, his NFL team would likely be smart enough to avoid that being an issue. Splitting hairs regarding whether he’s an every-down back might be a bit short-sighted when there are teams fully capable of having him hitting the ground running everywhere from the backfield to the slot. Home-run hitters like this don’t grow on trees. You take players like this, and you don’t really ask them to muscle up.  NFL Comparison: Napoleon Kaufman. Like Achane, the 5-foot-9, 185-pound Kaufman was a prodigal track star, and that showed up with all kinds of big plays for the University of Washington. No surprise that Al Davis selected Kaufman with the 18th overall pick in the 1995 draft. Kaufman was a football player, not just a straight-line speed guy, so he provided more value than a lot of those track dudes Davis loved to bet on. Kaufman was a lightning bolt waiting to happen as a runner, receiver, and returner, and Achane has all of that potential.) 2023 NFL Draft: Ranking the top RB fits for the Lions (Tier 3 - Devon Achane (Texas A&M), 5-foot-8, 188 pounds:  Achane is not only the fastest running back in this class, but the third-fastest athlete to test at the combine. Due to his size and speed, there have been a lot of comparisons to Jahvid Best, but I find Achane to have much better vision and willingness to take on contact.  Where Achane could use some extra work is on passing downs. He’s not going to magically get any taller or bigger, so pass protection is already not his strong suit, but him consistently missing assignments is only making things tougher. He also hasn’t shown much route running ability and tends to just leak out 5 yards and catch some dump-off throws for most of his receptions. That’s not to say that he can’t be an effective pass catcher out of the backfield, but he’s going to have to prove that he can bring more value in that area.  How he fits: Complementary speed back. A deeper look at the 2023 RB class: Ranking the best bell cows, scatbacks and more (SCATBACKS/GADGET PLAYERS - While the “space backs” listed above trend toward the smaller side for the running back position, these prospects take it to an extreme. If a back is under 190 pounds in the NFL, there are only certain roles that offensive coordinators will trust them in. These players can still make a serious impact in certain ways, though.  1. Devon Achane, Texas A&M:  Speed, speed and more speed. I’m not sure I’d trust any of these three in pass protection consistently, but they can all do some unique things as a receiver if an offense wants to use two-back sets. Achane has the best size of the bunch, meaning he could potentially be trusted with a heftier workload at 5-foot-8 and 188 pounds, but teams aren't going to send any of these guys onto the field on a third- or fourth-and-short.) 2023 NFL Draft: One prospect at every position with the most to gain at the NFL Scouting Combine (Running Back: Devon Achane, Texas A&M Aggies - If there’s anyone who could come close to John Ross’ record 4.22-second 40-yard dash, it’s likely Achane.  Not only does the junior have breakaway speed on the gridiron, but his speed is also verified on the track as well. Last spring, Achane ran the 100-meter dash in 10.14 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 20.2 seconds for Texas A&M’s track and field team. Pre-2023 NFL Scouting Combine Running Back Rankings (Devon Achane, Texas A&M:  Because they are both explosive sub-200 pound backs with game-changing speed, Jahmyr Gibbs and Devon Achane are invariably going to be compared with each other when evaluating the RB class. But stylistically they are noticeably different, as Gibbs is more of a straight-line runner between the tackles who is good at exploiting creases, but isn't particularly creative. Conversely, Achane is a determined and focused interior rusher who is always probing for the smallest crack to dart through in an effort to reach the open field where his Olympic-caliber speed and eye-popping change of direction ability make him special. He was also a valuable cog in the moribund Texas A&M passing game, catching 57 passes since 2021 (10th most in FBS) including 16, third down targets which was the second most nationally this year. Achane's 19.7 carry per game average was the 10th highest in the Power Five while his 4.9 targets per game ranked 8th. On the ground, the Texas A&M tailback rushed for 10+ yards on 18.9% of his carries since 2021, which is the second-highest rate nationally among RBs with 220+ carries. On the flip side, Achane gained 20+ yards on just one of his 33 receptions this season while sporting a sub-par 7.7% drop rate (5 drops in 65 catchable targets) and is a blank in pass pro, allowing a whopping 10 pressures this season and earning a woeful 27.7 pass-blocking grade from PFF. Achane is billed at 5'9/185, which is very small to be counted on for consistent, game script-proof production in the NFL. However, I'm very interested to see his dimensions at the Combine since Achane was a track runner in college and had trouble keeping on weight in the offseason when he was competing. If he can get to 195, Achane could be a very effective all-purpose complement to a power back, which could be a very attractive second-round option depending on the landing spot.) Devon Achane, Texas A&M, 5-9, 185 pounds, Junior.  Overview: Few things went right for the Aggies in 2022, as Jimbo Fisher's squad ended the year with just five wins in 12 games and failed to qualify for a bowl game. Achane, however, was a clear ray of sunshine amidst the darkness, logging a staggering 38 carries for 215 yards and two scores in a stunning 38-23 upset over then-No. 5-ranked LSU to cap the year. It was an emphatic finale for the speedy Achane, who signed with A&M as a celebrated four-star recruit and left College Station three years later as Fisher's clear lead back, racking up 2,930 scrimmage yards and 26 touchdowns with another 613 yards and two scores as a kick returner over that time.  Strengths: Achane is blessed with world-class speed, excelling on the Aggies' Track and Field team as well as the gridiron and posting a personal best 100-meter time of 10.12 seconds. He's surprisingly tough between the tackles, showing vision and courage to squeeze through tiny holes most backs couldn't. Similarly, Achane has fumbled just twice over his college career. Though his short stature somewhat limits the type of routes he was asked to run, Achane shows good concentration, core flexibility and soft hands to pluck outside of his frame.  Concerns: While a stronger, more determined runner than his frame suggests, Achane slips by extended grabs from defenders more often than he actually breaks tackles. Further, he can be too indecisive at the point, stopping his feet to determine his next move and allowing the cavalry to catch up.  Bottom Line: Achane darts, dips and disappears, making it almost impossible for defenders to line him up cleanly. His elusiveness, breakaway speed and proven ability to handle a large workload should ease concerns about Achane's ability to hold up. 2023 NFL Draft Stock - Week 10 (Up - Devon Achane, RB, Texas A&M:  Versus Florida, Achane kept the Aggies in the game, leading them to all of their points in the first half. On the first play of the game for the Texas A&M offense, Achane reversed field and exploded down the field for a 65-yard gain. Achane finished the drive by cutting back and walking into the end zone with an easy touchdown. Later in the first quarter, Achane added his second touchdown on an outlet pass when he was wide open in the flat. Lions 2023 draft watch: 7 players to watch (Devon Achane, RB, TAMU (junior):  Blessed with elite sprinter speed, Achane can hit home runs from anywhere on the field. He is a bit small in stature but he runs with great balance, keeps great pad level, and hits the gap downhill in a manner that would make Lions assistant head coach/running backs coach Duce Staley proud. Achane also has soft hands as a receiver, allowing him to contribute on all three downs, and can be a weapon as a kick returner.  Lions fit: The Lions need a player capable of replicating what D’Andre Swift can do out of the backfield and Achane fits the bill. 2023 NFL Draft Watch: 5 Running Backs Handed Keys To Backfield (1. Devon Achane, Texas A&M:  Achane has a lot of buzz around him long before the 2022 campaign kicks off. The ability he's put on display is impressive. Achane has a whole highlight tape of big plays, and long yardage runs to his name already. This year, he steps into the limelight after playing a secondary role to Isaiah Spiller in 2021. While he might not have been the premium back, the one-two punch of Spiller and Achane was dangerous last year. Spiller was out in front with 1,016 yards and six touchdowns on 178 attempts, but Achane was every bit as electric. He took 130 carries for 885 yards and nine touchdowns. That resulted in an average yards per attempt of 6.8 compared to Spillers' 5.7. That plus 261 yards in the passing game has football fans eagerly anticipating what the young back can do in a primary role.  Devon Achane has a nice patient hop-step out of the backfield before shooting through the gap. When he hits the open field, he's one of the most electric backs in college football and is rarely caught. He picks up speed in an instant and quickly runs away from secondaries. Running backs to watch for the 2023 NFL draft (Devon Achane, Texas A&M:  Devon Achane might have been a backup the past two seasons, but with Isaiah Spiller on his way to the NFL, Achane is primed for a big year in the season ahead. Achane was a four-star recruit coming out of Fort Bend Marshall High School in Missouri City, Texas, and committed to Texas A&M. During his freshman year he played in eight games, and was named the Orange Bowl Most Outstanding Player after he gained 140 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.  Last season, Achane appeared in all 12 games and gained 910 yards on 130 carries, scoring nine touchdowns. He also caught another 24 passes for 261 yards and a score.  Achane’s calling card? Speed. He is a sprinter on the Texas A&M track team, running the 60-meter dash in the winter and the 100- and 200-meter dashes in the spring.
