2023 NFL Draft: Who is the CAN'T-MISS prospect? (Eric Edholm - PICK: Bijan Robinson, RB, Texas.  I get the debates about how high to draft a running back -- that's a reasonable discussion -- but I truly see a special talent here. With the run game cycling back into the pass-happy NFL, Robinson should prove to be more than worth his draft standing -- no matter when he comes off the board. I had a coach tell me Robinson has the best RB hands he's seen in a long time, and his character grades have been essentially spotless from evaluators. Robinson might be LaDainian 2.0 -- no joke.  Jeffri Chadiha - PICK: Bijan Robinson, RB, Texas - Robinson is the kind of electric talent who would've been a top-five pick 15 years ago. He possesses everything you want in a running back -- size, vision, explosiveness -- and he's a gifted pass catcher. It's easy to see him having an impact comparable to what we've seen from stars like Christian McCaffrey and Saquon Barkley. He also could join a team with great weapons around him because he might not be selected until the second half of the first round. 2023 NFL Draft Week Rumors Thursday (One player who has gone under-hyped during the 2023 NFL Draft process is Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Many teams use a color-based grade scale, with Blue signifying an elite starter, Red/Warm marking a good starter, Red indicating a solid starter, and below that are backup quality players. The 2023 NFL Draft is not especially strong, and Gibbs is one of the few players who received a blue grade. Multiple team sources feel Gibbs could be an Alvin Kamara- or Jamaal Charles-type running back in the NFL. The other consensus blue players in the 2023 NFL Draft are Bijan Robinson, Will Anderson, Tyree Wilson and Jalen Carter. Some teams gave blue grades to Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Devon Witherspoon. Some teams, meanwhile, did not have Anderson and Wilson with blue grades and had them as red/warm.  With Gibbs being one of the only consensus blue prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft, in all likelihood he is going to go much higher than expected tonight. Along with being an ultra-fast running back, Gibbs is a phenomenal receiving weapon who can be used out of the slot like Kamara. Gibbs also can serve as a kick returner. He is tough, strong, fast, and has great character on and off the field. There are a lot of teams that are interested in Gibbs. While he might be a surprise top-20 pick to the media and fans, it won't be a surprise to teams if Gibbs goes that high.) 5 bold predictions for the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft (Two running backs are off the board before two wide receivers - It’s almost unthinkable to say there will be more running backs selected in the first round than wide receivers. In 2022, we had six wide receivers in the first round and no running backs. In 2021, we had five wide receivers and two running backs. In 2020, we had six wide receivers and one running back. But every class is constructed differently, and this year it’s built in a manner that could yield two running back selections and either one or two receivers.  Jaxon Smith-Njigba seems to be the only wide receiver the NFL is comfortable with (at a consensus level) taking in the first round. Zay Flowers, Quentin Johnston and Jordan Addison are candidates to be first-round picks, but I wouldn’t say any are guaranteed.  On the flip side, we know Bijan Robinson is going in Round 1. And as the clock ticks closer to the draft, we’ve also heard Jahmyr Gibbs is a strong candidate for the first round. I expect Robinson to be a top-15 pick, and I don’t think Gibbs will be far behind. Buying or selling the biggest draft rumors (Rumor: Bijan Robinson will be a top 10 pick - Robinson is CBS Sports' No. 5 prospect in this class, but he plays the position the league doesn't seem to value anymore. The Texas product avoided a whopping 113 tackles last season. That's the most tackles avoided by any FBS player over the past five years! When it comes to him as a prospect, it's also thought he may be more of a dual-threat weapon at the next level. Bottom line, Robinson has so much potential that he's going to be a first-round pick.  Now, how high he will go on Thursday night remains to be seen. Some believe the Atlanta Falcons at No. 8 overall are a potential landing spot, and the Philadelphia Eagles have been a popular mock destination as well. 2023 NFL Draft takes: Five QBs will go in Round 1; Jonathan Mingo is this year's George Pickens (9. Two running backs are Round 1 worthy - Contrary to popular opinion these days, I have no problem with taking a running back in the first round. If a ball carrier is special and can step in and make an immediate impact, it can drive an offense -- or take a contender to another level. All that said, I typically think the best RB prospects should be considered in the back half of Round 1. But as I wrote last week, Bijan Robinson is no typical RB prospect -- he's worthy of a top-10 pick. The Texas product is the best non-QB in this offensive prospect crop. I support Atlanta grabbing him at No. 8 or Philadelphia turning in the card at No. 10. (Can you imagine how frightening Philly's offense would be with Bijan joining Jalen Hurts in the backfield?) 2023 NFL Draft: Pre-draft morning mailbag on the Detroit Lions (Which players do you love that you absolutely know the Lions won't draft?   Honestly, it’s a great question because it happens every year. I have a handful of players that I love and the Lions don’t take them. This happens more so on the second day of the draft than anything else. That being said, I love Bijan Robinson from Texas. He’s one of the best players in this class and I think he’d provide an immediate impact for any backfield in the NFL. However, the Lions spent money on David Montgomery and for now, they seem content with D’Andre Swift.  I wouldn’t be shocked if they selected him with the 6th overall pick. Reason being — terrific football player that fits their style of play on offense. Meanwhile, Brad Holmes was with the Rams when they selected Todd Gurley with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. But again, I just don’t see the Lions taking a swing at the running back position in the first round.  Chances the Lions take an RB in the first round and how that would impact the offense?  This is a great point by Jerry and something I thought about during the first question (listed above). Bijan would be a great asset in the Lions passing game for a running back. The Texas coaching staff came out and said he was the best pass-catcher on the team. That could be why Bijan saw close to 70 snaps (per PFF) aligned at wide receiver and in the slot over the last two seasons.) The Texas running back joined NFL NOW on Tuesday and talked about his pre-draft meetings with the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles, who hold the No. 8 and No. 10 overall picks, respectively; Robinson visited the Eagles and also had a pre-draft visit with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "Oh absolutely -- both teams that I visited," Robinson said when asked if he got a good feel for the clubs. "Eagles was an amazing visit. Coaches to GM, the janitor, the staff. 2023 NFL Draft: The top 8 running backs (1. Bijan Robinson, Texas (Height: 5′ 11″ (57th percentile) Weight: 215 (56th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.46 (82nd), 10-Yard Split: 1.52 (83rd), Vertical Jump: 37″ (80th), Broad Jump: 124″ (83rd), Wingspan: 74¾” (56th), Arm Length: 31⅛” (57th), Hand Size: 9¾” (84th)) - Bio: Robinson attended Salpointe High School in Tucson, Arizona, made the varsity team as a freshman, and announced his presence with authority in this sophomore season, gaining 2,023 rushing yards and scoring 26 touchdowns on 189 carries. Robinson finished his time at Salpointe as Arizona’s all-time high-school leader in rushing yards with 7,036, and touchdowns with 114. Robinson was a five-star recruit, the No. 1 running back in the nation in 2020, and the No. 2 overall prospect behind only Georgia cornerback Kelee Ringo. Robinson chose Texas over just about any school he wanted, which led to amazing productivity and an NIL deal to endorse his own brand of mustard, called “Bijan Mustardson.” It is the “Official Dijon of Bijan,” and we have nothing to add that could amplify the greatness of this idea.  In three seasons with the Longhorns, Robinson gained 3,407 yards ad scored 33 touchdowns on 539 carries. He also caught 60 passes on 77 targets for 803 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2022, he had 475 snaps in the backfield, 23 out wide, and 14 in the slot.  Stat to Know: Robinson forced 104 missed tackles last season, which is the most for any running back in the history of Pro Football Focus’ charting. In addition, his career Missed Tackle Rate Forced of 39% is tied with former North Carolina and current Denver Broncos star Javonte Williams for the highest in PFF’s charting annals.  Strengths: Robinson’s contact balance is as good as for any running back I’ve ever evaluated. And it’s not just about pure power, though he’s got more than enough weight to just throw defenders aside — it’s the eerie combination of vision, lateral agility, and force through all kinds of contact. There are plays in which you wonder how he “only” broke 104 tackles last season.  And if you want preposterous jump cuts combined with home-run speed you’d more expect out of a guy 20 pounds lighter… well, Robinson can do that all day. He’s probably got more pure “Holy [EXPLETIVE]’ plays on his tape then any other player in this class. As a receiver, Robinson presents a more than credible weapon in the slot — he’s about far more than just swings and screen passes. Here, he just leveled Iowa State cornerback Anthony Johnson Jr. with a move on the skinny post, adding acrobatics at the end.  Weaknesses: Well, this section is going to be pretty light. Robinson is the most ding-proof prospect in the 2023 class. His only consistent weakness is that he’s a running back in the year 2023 as opposed to the year 1998.  Conclusion: Positional value is a fickle concept. There are those who will automatically criticize any team that takes a running back in the first round of any draft, and it’s really missing the overall point. Overall, running backs are like insurance — they don’t matter until they do, and when they do, they REALLY do. Especially when we’re talking about a running back who pins the needle with every attribute for the position, and adds legitimate value as a multi-level receiver. Robinson is the best non-quarterback and non-defensive player in this class, and were we talking about another era, he could be NO. 1 overall. None of this should shadow his value and potential at the NFL level, because it’s absolute, and it’s bulletproof.  NFL Comparison: Josh Jacobs. The Raiders took Jacobs out of Alabama with the second of their three first-round picks in the 2019 draft. The other two picks, edge-rusher Clelin Ferell and safety Johnathan Abram, were unmitigated busts. But Jacobs became one of the best running backs in the NFL, especially in the 2022 season, when he forced a league-high 90 missed tackles, showed all kinds of second- and third-level speed, and showed that he could get things done as a receiver. Robinson is more evolved with a lot of Jacobs’ traits, but it’s a fairly even comp.) 2023 NFL Draft Week Rumors Monday (There has been some hype that Philadelphia might take Texas superstar running back Bijan Robinson, but sources say the franchise are more likely to take a defensive lineman. Everybody around the league loves Robinson, but the value teams place on running backs will cause some teams to take lesser players over Robinson because those players play a more in-demand position. If the Eagles don't take Carter, it sounds like Van Ness is a top target for them.  Where Robinson will go in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft is a big mystery. There are many teams that have him as the highest-graded player in the draft, and Robinson is a lock to go as a top-20 pick. However, teams feel he could go higher than expected.  One source said the Houston Texans love Robinson and that he is in the running for the 12th pick of Round 1 of the 2023 NFL Draft. Taking running back Dameon Pierce in the fourth round last year is one of the few successes that Texans general manager Nick Caserio can claim, so it would be a surprise if Houston did take a running back given Pierce's excellent rookie season.  However, it is the Texans we are talking about, and they have made a plethora of mistakes over the past five years, with incompetence stemming from owner Cal McNair, former head coach Bill O'Brien, and now Caserio. Robinson would probably be a great player for the Texans, but considering they already have a good running back, it does not make sense to take another when there a lot of other positions starved for talent on their roster. Still, sources say Houston is high on Robinson and if he gets to the 12th pick, he could be too good for the organization to pass up.) Three-option NFL mock draft: How teams can go in different directions in Round 1 (6. Detroit Lions (via Rams) (Will pick: Bijan Robinson, RB, Texas.  Should pick: Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois.  Dark horse: Christian Gonzalez, CB, Oregon):  I know, I know. Many are going to cry that the positional value of running backs — or lack thereof — will prevent Robinson from being selected this early. While it's true that teams don't value running backs as much as they once did, it's also true that Robinson is regarded as one of the top overall players in this year's draft. That may be enough to convince a running back-needy team with multiple first-round resources to draft him early.  The Lions lost NFL rushing touchdown leader Jamaal Williams during the offseason and replaced him with David Montgomery, who figures to be a solid, but unspectacular, starter. D'Andre Swift hasn't been able to stay healthy, so the Lions could look to move off him and on to Robinson, who can be a three-down workhorse.  It's hard to be too upset with the Robinson pick considering his talent, but one could argue that the Lions would be better served taking a top defensive talent and grabbing a back like Jahmyr Gibbs with the 18th pick. What We Learned: 8 combine takeaways from Sat. (2. Studying Sanders. Maybe one day, 25 years after Texas' Bijan Robinson retires, young NFL hopefuls will be watching his highlights on YouTube. But for Robinson's generation, the old-school highlight running back of choice is nearly unanimous: Barry Sanders.  Sanders is arguably a singular talent, but it's inarguable that many have tried to emulate him and, let's be honest, copy his moves. Consider Robinson in that camp as well.  The former Longhorns back is expected to be the first runner selected in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he has a terrific style unto his own, flashing an alluring combination of quickness, vision and power. What We Learned: 6 combine takeaways from Wed.(2. Respect for Bijan: Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. is among the most decorated prospects at the combine and a candidate to be one of the first players selected this year. He recorded 34.5 sacks, 62 tackles for loss and even a pick-six over three brilliant seasons with the Crimson Tide, who won a national championship his freshman year and lost in the title game his sophomore campaign.  Anderson's nickname is "The Terminator," so called for his fearless, relentless rush style. So, when Anderson was asked Wednesday to name the toughest opponent he faced in college, media ears perked up.  And his answer -- after mulling it over for a few moments -- was a bit surprising to me and definitely enlightening: Texas running back Bijan Robinson.  "(Robinson) was a big back," Anderson said. "We had to gang tackle him. We had to get all hats to the ball."  What's surprising about it has less to do with Robinson himself and more about the fact that Anderson picked a skill-position player and not, say, a massive offensive tackle. And not even an SEC player, to boot.  Robinson nearly led an upset of the Tide last season, accumulating 130 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown in Alabama's eventual 20-19 victory on Sept. 10. 5 Questions We Need Answered At 2023 NFL Combine (Just how great of an athlete is Texas running back Bijan Robinson, and just how high can he go?  Robinson is by far the best running back prospect in the upcoming draft, and there’s an argument to be made that he is the absolute No. 1 athlete in the class. The only problem is that he’s a running back, a position that has become less and less valuable in the eyes of the NFL in recent years.  In decades past, Robinson might have been the undisputed No. 1 overall pick, but in 2023, it’s hard to find the right team fit in the first round. Regardless, Robinson is going to dominate this year’s NFL Combine. He is an unbelievable athlete who’s poised to put up jaw-dropping testing numbers in every category and show just how much greater he is than all other running backs and the draft class in general.  Once the NFL Combine is over, we’ll really have a sense of how he stacks up against everyone else, and, as a result, we may also get a better sense of how willing teams might be to draft him in the top 10 or 15.) Pre-2023 NFL Scouting Combine Running Back Rankings (Bijan Robinson, Texas:  I don't know what more to say about Bijan Robinson other than to corroborate that he's legitimately the most complete RB prospect to enter the draft since Saquon Barkley. He has the size, speed, receiving skills, acceleration and ability to cut at full speed at incredibly sharp angles at 6'0/220 pounds. There really is no bust potential here outside of injury, as Bijan broke an astounding 104 tackles (#1 in FBS) while averaging 4.17 yards after contact. He was so dangerous as a receiver that he amassed 314 receiving yards last year (10th most in FBS) on just 19 receptions for a gaudy 16.5 YPR! The next lowest reception total for a running back in the receiving yardage top-10 was Maryland RB Roman Hemby who posted 315 receiving yards on 34 receptions. He also ranks fifth in FBS in RB Red Zone targets since 2021, showing how much Texas HC Steve Sarkisian depended on Bijan in every phase of the offense. Easy #1 RB and R1 selection.  The real quandary for me in this class is who will be the all-around second-best RB, as we've got a mix of dynamic sub-200 pounders who can make big plays and a few bigger backs with three-down potential that could end up as the eventual second-best back of the 2023 class. Bijan Robinson, Texas, 6-0, 220 pounds, Junior.  Overview: The first consensus All-American running back from the University of Texas since Ricky Williams, Robinson finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2022 and won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top runner, galloping for 1,580 yards and 18 touchdowns. He dominated from the outset, winning the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year in 2020 and graduating to first-team All-Conference honors as a true sophomore. Robinson was a five-star recruit who became the first player in Arizona high school football history to twice win the Ed Doherty Award as the state's top high-school football player, as well as the first in state history to rush for over 2,000 yards three separate years.  Strengths: Backs with Robinson's prototypical build and power are typically not also blessed with remarkable vision, patience and elusiveness. That is the combination that makes Robinson the rare runner worthy of early-first-round consideration. He is a natural runner and very comfortable in traffic, easily downshifting and sliding laterally to create on his own. Though he can finesse with the best of them, Robinson morphs into a downhill power back when necessary, dropping his shoulder to initiate contact and keeping his legs barreling to finish runs. He is also a wonderfully reliable pass-catcher, possessing soft hands, as well as terrific body control and concentration to make contested grabs look easy. He has shown excellent ball security over his career, fumbling just four times (losing two) over 607 career touches.  Concerns: Though he shows good field speed, with four runs of 40-plus yards in 2022 alone, Robinson may not turn in a blinding 40-yard dash time during workouts, showing smooth acceleration but lacking true breakaway speed. Dating back to his high-school days, Robinson has been leaned on pretty heavily and some of the tread may already be wearing off. 2023 NFL Draft: Week 7 Stock Report (In a sport evolving more and more towards the passing game, this might be the year of the running back. Several top-ranked teams are led by elite running back prospects, which goes against everything football has been about the last few years. It’s great to see because it shows how healthy the game is and that the position is as important as ever. Texas’ Bijan Robinson and Michigan’s Blake Corum are two players who proved this fact. Both of these players rushed their teams to victory against very tough opponents. Corum went up against a daunted Penn State defense and easily ran through them. He gained 166 yards and two touchdowns, but it was the constant pressure he put on the Penn State defense. It was like watching a boxer take body punches for an entire fight wearing them down. Eventually, you will open them up for a knockout shot. That is what happened, too, as the game ended up being a blowout. RB is a position that doesn’t always get its due in the modern NFL. But the 2023 group has a chance to be truly special. 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Notebook: What defines a prospect as a ‘sleeper’ vs. ‘breakout’? (What stands out for guys like Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs?  It’s also clear that while RBs can independently create, they are, by their nature, more dependent on their surroundings — mainly their blocking and the density of the boxes they face. So yes, running backs are relatively replaceable because of their relative dependence on their surroundings. But are there select traits found in specific RBs that make them more valuable than their counterparts?  That’s a question I’ve been revisiting through the early stages of the 2023 NFL Draft cycle. It’s a question that becomes even more intriguing when looking at prospects like Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs.  Both Robinson and Gibbs are phenomenal prospects, and a few foundational traits stand out when observing their tape. Quick processing is a staple for both. In Robinson’s case, the 6’0”, 220-pound back is a master of space manipulation. He feels lanes so quickly and so effortlessly. He navigates through those lanes with smooth athleticism and quick cuts. In doing so, Robinson can actually compensate for poor OL play, just as strong OL play can elevate mid-level running backs.  Drawing from the tape of exceptional RB prospects, you can start to gain an understanding of what traits to look for in first-round worthy RBs. Yes, the position simply isn’t as inherently valuable as others. But running backs with a combination of high-end athleticism and high-level processing and reaction ability are those who can supersede their dependence on blocking and other external factors.  And if those backs provide value in the passing game, as Robinson and Gibbs do? 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Notebook: Early prospect grades and five matchups to watch in Week 1 (Will Anderson, Bijan Robinson, Jalen Carter all blue-chip prospects:  Admittedly, I need a larger sample size with my grading scale before I can outline specific round and range thresholds. But there’s one that’s been fairly distinct so far, and that’s the 8.5 threshold. Players who score above 8.5 tend to be in a realm of their own in terms of talent. Only three prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft scored above an 8.5. And so far, only three have preliminary grades over 8.5 in the 2023 class. Those three are Will Anderson, Bijan Robinson, and Jalen Carter.  8.5 and above is developing into a “blue-chip” range for prospects, and Anderson, Robinson, and Carter all qualify. It’s no surprise for any of them, of course. Anderson is an elite physical talent with a similarly elite motor. Robinson is a special running back with rare creative instincts and control. And Carter is a game-wrecker at defensive tackle with his burst, lateral agility, and power capacity. Running backs to watch for the 2023 NFL draft (Bijan Robinson, Texas:  Entering the 2022 college football season, the one running back on everyone’s mind is Bijan Robinson. If the Texas Longhorns are finally going to “be back,” then Robinson will be a huge part of that story. As we sit here in mid-May, Robinson is the only back well inside the first round of current mock drafts. While we all know the value — and folly — of early mock drafts, that reflects the consensus view at the moment: Robinson is RB1 to start the year.  And with good reason. Robinson was a five-star recruit coming out of Salpointe Catholic High School in Tuscon, Arizona, and was named the Gatorade Player of the Year during his senior season. He chose Texas over a host of colleges, and immediately saw the field. During his freshman season in 2020, Robinson gained 703 yards on 86 carries, and was named the 2020 Alamo Bowl MVP after he gained 183 yards on just ten carries, and scored a touchdown.  He was even better as a sophomore. Last season Robinson gained 1,127 yards on 195 carries, scoring 11 times. He is also a threat in the passing game, as he caught 26 passes for 295 yards and four more scores. At the end of the season, Robinson was named a First-Team All-Big 12 selection.  Provided he stays healthy, you can expect more accolades at the end of the 2022 campaign.
