Fox sports Rang (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: There aren't a lot of cornerbacks who seem like naturals for a head coach like Dan Campbell, who famously introduced himself to Lions fans as someone on the lookout for players willing to "bite a kneecap off." While Campbell may have seemed a touch extreme with his description, he'll love Witherspoon, a tenacious defender equally aggressive against the run as the pass. 18. TE Michael Mayer: An ideal match down the seam and at the line of scrimmage as a run-blocker, Mayer would add immediate versatility and toughness to a Detroit offense seemingly on the verge of becoming one of the league's best.) USA Today Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: If Detroit debates Witherspoon against Christian Gonzalez, this could be another Aidan Hutchinson vs. Kayvon Thibodeaux situation, with the player perceived to have the more tenacious playing style winning out. Witherspoon's all-out approach will no doubt make him a favorite of Dan Campbell, and his arrival would serve as the finishing touch for the overhaul of a secondary that ranked 30th in passing yards allowed last year. 18. TE Michael Mayer: Jameson Williams' six-game suspension for a gambling violation shouldn't prompt a panic in Detroit, but Jared Goff would still stand to benefit from another investment in the receiving corps. From his physicality at the catch point to his demeanor as a run blocker, Mayer and his rugged approach check a lot of Detroit's boxes. One year after jolting its edge rush with Aidan Hutchinson and sixth-round gem James Houston, Detroit might be inclined to make a similar splash on the interior. At 6-1 and 281 pounds, Kancey will take on a different role from many other defensive tackles, but there's no questioning the chaos his rapid first step can unleash.) SN (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: The Lions, after trading 2020 No. 3 overall pick Jeff Okudah to the Falcons, need to make rounding out their secondary a priority. Witherspoon's size and agility are appealing, but his physicality to help Cameron Sutton, Emmanuel Moseley and C.J. Gardner-Johnson make him the preferred big corner early. 18. TE Dalton Kincaid: The Lions traded away T.J. Hockenson last season and although they could think about waiting at a deep position, Kincaid stands out as a great fit for their offense. Passing targets who have the athleticism to stretch the field at times are a higher priority with Jameson Williams' suspension. 48. Jahmyr Gibbs: The Lions will hope to land Gibbs if they pass on Robinson early in the first round and the Eagles jump on him. Gibbs might have more value to them given his compact running but also dynamic receiving skills as they look to displace D'Andre Swift and his durability issues. 55. DE Derick Hall: The Lions have looked closely at Hall to improve their pass rush away from 2022 No. 2 overall pick Aidan Hutchinson. He makes a lot of sense as a pure complement with his straight-up suddenness and quickness. 81. SI Kevin Hansen (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: Witherspoon isn’t the biggest cornerback, but his style and mentality matches perfectly with what Dan Campbell, Aaron Glenn and the Lions want in a corner. He was a three-year starter for the Illini and is a confident, smart and physical cornerback with outstanding ball skills. Witherspoon finished last season with three interceptions and 14 pass breakups. 18. RB Bijan Robinson: Speaking of interesting story lines, Robinson’s landing spot will be fascinating to watch. As a top-five prospect who plays a devalued position, there is an incredibly wide range of landing spots for the former Longhorn. The team signed David Montgomery, but the oft-injured D’Andre Swift is entering the final year of his contract. Robinson has outstanding size, speed, vision and contact balance, and his 183 missed tackles forced over the past two seasons, per PFF, are 56 more than the next closest back. PFF Spielberg (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: Witherspoon is as physical a cornerback as you’ll see in today’s game, with the ability to jam receivers at the line in press and drop the hammer as an open-field tackler. You better keep your head on a swivel whenever he’s on the field, with his experience in college enabling him to diagnose plays before the ball is even snapped, often blowing up screen passes in the backfield after covering a lot of ground to get to the ball carrier. Witherspoon’s 92.5 coverage grade led the FBS in 2022, and he also led the FBS with 18 forced incompletions on the year. The only thing that may keep him out of the top 10 is weighing in at 181 pounds, but that doesn't matter if he plays like he’s the biggest guy on the field 18. QB C.J. Stroud: Stroud was charted as accurate on 68.2% of passes in 2022, the second-best rate in the country, and he led the nation with 28.2% of passes deemed “accurate-plus,” which factors in leading a receiver away from coverage, among other things. The one main knock he had throughout the year was a lack of creativity off-script, and then he had the performance of a lifetime in that regard against Georgia in the College Football Playoff.) SI NFL Draft Marchionte (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: Personally, I prefer Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez over Witherspoon, but the tenacity of Witherspoon's physical nature Witherspoon coincides with Lions head coach Dan Campbell's tough guy mentality. A feisty corner who thrived at shutting down opponents’ top pass catchers this past season, puts The Lions are going to be tempted to add pieces up front with so much talent on the draft board in terms of edge rushers, but not having anyone to cover down covers both ends. Detroit signed Cam Sutton in free agency but doesn’t take the focus off a player like Witherspoon. The Lions traded Jeff Okudah, the third overall pick in 2020, to the Falcons for a fifth-round pick on April 11th, which should bolster the team's view to grab an elite defensive back. 18. WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba: Ohio State funneled two outstanding first-round receivers into last year’s NFL Draft. Garrett Wilson earned NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, while ex-Buckeye teammate Chris Olave was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Smith-Njigba is the next up before Marvin Harrison Jr. takes center stage in 2024. The Lions had no issues scoring points last season, and that was without coveted rookie Jameson Williams playing in only six games while recovering from his leg injury. The Lions got hit with suspensions of various lengths of time for violating the league rules on gambling. Most notable among the suspensions is Williams, who will miss six games. Receiver Stanley Berryhill and Quintez Cephus were also suspended. Berryhill received six games, and Cephus was released from the team outright. Draft Tek (6. DT Jalen Carter: The Detroit Lions have plenty of cover if they decide Georgia DT Jalen Carter is just not worth the risk at Pick 6. He messed up big-time with repeated speeding and drag racing that turned tragic. He was awful at his own Pro Day. The word out of Athens is that the program was more than ready to see him leave town. In addition, the Lions' coveted Try Hard Guy culture just got a knock with Jameson Williams' suspension for careless online gambling. But big guys just don't have the kind of lateral movement So taking him here means the Lions are ready to roll the dice on superior talent, damn the torpedoes! 18. OG O'Cyrus Torrence: The Lions have one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, and only two teams spend more on the position currently. So why look at O Line here? MLive Raven (6. Detroit Lions (via Los Angeles Rams) -- Illinois CB Devon Witherspoon: Devon Witherspoon is one of the best players in this year’s draft. And this pick is so much more than just filling a long-term need. Outside of Jalen Carter, Witherspoon is the best player left on the board by a country mile. Carter to the Lions is something that remains possible. He’s too good. But it’s a thought I’ve softened on, with Carter feeling like the bizarro Penei Sewell, Aidan Hutchinson type of prospect. But Witherspoon? He’s like a pit-bull Aaron Glenn type who plays and hits like he believes he weighs 280 pounds. And much like Wilson and the Seahawks, Witherspoon makes it easy to pass on Carter’s unknowns. Witherspoon has also been my mock pick here every step of the way, from before the combine to after the event and free agency. It’s an ideal fit for a blue-chip cornerback prospect. The Lions trading Jeff Okudah to Atlanta, with only Cam Sutton and Chase Lucas signed past 2023, strengthens that belief. 18. DT Calijah Kancey: It came down to the question of -- is it better to grab Jalen Carter at Pick 6 and then address the long-term cornerback concerns? Or is it better to take the stud cornerback at the top and see how the interior defensive linemen and edge rushers fall ahead of No. 18? And as you can see, the prospect of Devon Witherspoon paired with the supremely juiced-up defensive tackle Calijah Kancey was enough to sway me in this direction. And Kancey is someone I’ve been wary of throughout this process. And that’s nothing against his game. It’s just that the Lions have talked about the desire to add a run-stuffing, girthy defensive tackle to the mix. And Kancey fell into the Nolan Smith bucket in this year’s class as an undersized but ultra-athletic option. MAfter a closer look, though, Kancey has won me over as a potential every-down piece, not just a sexy 40-yard dash and Relative Athletic Score. And you won’t hear me compare him to legendary world-eater and noted undersized Pitt alumnus Aaron Donald. That’s not fair to anyone. But Kancey, one of the prime darlings of the analytics and draft community in 2023, would bring rare traits and ability to the interior defensive line. Kancey created 30 hurries last season, notching 14.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Pro Football Focus ranks him 14th among all prospects. Kancey notably won 22.7% of his pass rushes in 2022. He’s undersized and likely won’t play every down out off the bat. But the Lions are built to welcome someone like him to their defensive front, with all that inside-outside versatility and rolodex of blossoming edge rushers. Kancey knows how to use his frame and speed to get under and around blockers. There aren’t too many 280-pound NFL defensive tackles. But there aren’t too many defensive tackles who can run, change directions and explode the way Kancey can.) PFN Pauline (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: The Carter watch begins with this pick, but Detroit needs a cornerback, and Devon Witherspoon is the player everyone in the league believes ends up in Motown. 18. TE Michael Mayer: Tight end is a need, and Michael Mayer is more the type of player Dan Campbell prefers at the position. I think the Lions will look to trade down, and I’m told they like Jahmyr Gibbs at the bottom of Round 1.A top cornerback wouldn’t be surprising at this spot if one happens to fall. However, an athletic, down-the-field pass-catching tight end is needed, and Dan Campbell will fall in love with Dalton Kincaid. 48. OG Steve Avila: Steve Avila is a large offensive lineman who plays big football, overpowering opponents and driving them into the ground. While I initially believed he was solely a power/gap blocker, the movement skills he showed at the Combine lead me to believe you may be able to put him in motion once in a while. Avila possesses starting potential at the next level if used properly. 55. WR Jayden Reed: Jayden Reed put together three productive seasons for Michigan State, then went to the Senior Bowl and had two exceptional days of practice. He’s a versatile wideout who can line up on the outside or in the slot. Reed’s ability to separate through route running is impressive. He can also double as a return specialist. 81. DT Zacch Pickens: Zacch Pickens is a hard-working lineman whose first-step quickness and ability to get leverage on opponents give him a decided advantage. He’s a 3-technique type who can also play in a one-gap system. Pickens should only improve as he physically matures and adds strength to his game.) PFN Caplan (6. CB CB Devon Witherspoon: What gives him the nod over Christian Gonzalez is his versatility. Devon Witherspoon can line up inside in nickel, as he did that quite well during his time at Illinois. Personnel sources love his toughness and physical play, and so will head coach Dan Campbell. 18. TE Dalton Kincaid: While defensive tackle is Detroit’s top need by far, tight end isn’t far behind. Dalton Kincaid should be the first player taken off the board at his position and no worse than second. If he can fix that, he can be special. 18. QB Anthony Richardson, Florida: Jared Goff has two years left on his contract and will be the starter in 2023. CBS Richard (6. QB Anthony Richardson: This was a tough call between a quarterback and cornerback Christian Gonzalez. My hunch is that the Lions see themselves as contenders who won't pick this high again anytime soon. Franchises tend to try solving their quarterback issues first and foremost, so that's my forecast here, particularly given Jared Goff's contract situation. Richardson would give the Lions, potentially, an unreal playmaker to go with several other such studs in their formidable offense. And they have the assistant coaches to help harness his athleticism while training him to be more efficient. Richardson might not get picked in redraft leagues but has 1.01 potential in Superflex/two-QB rookie-only drafts and top-10 potential in one-QB versions. If you can afford to be patient then I'd recommend Richardson over all of the 2023 QB prospects if he ends up in Detroit. 18. CB Joey Porter: Porter grew up around the NFL and knows how to carry himself, which I think the Lions will value. But better than that, he's a physical cornerback with good speed who can play man coverage. The Lions ask their cornerbacks to do plenty of that and he could either fit right in Week 1 or sit for a little bit behind Emmanuel Moseley before getting on the field in an every-down role.) FTW D'Andrea Final (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: Detroit has done work to revamp its secondary this offseason. Jeff Okudah was traded to the Falcons. Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley arrived in free agency. That’s a great start for the league’s 28th-ranked defense, but there’s more work to be done. The Lions’ draft spot at No. 6, thanks to the lingering effects of the Matthew Stafford trade, allows Dan Campbell his pick of this year’s solid cornerback crop. Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez has better measurables, but Witherspoon has true Sauce Gardner vibes. Like Gardner, he was a shutdown machine who erased opposing wideouts from the box score. He can be physical at the line of scrimmage but his fluid hips makes him sticky downfield. Factor in the closing speed to clamp off out-routes and you’ve got a player with All-Pro potential joining the early NFC North favorites. The Lions might be tempted to add a cornerback here, but they’ve addressed that need mightily in free agency. Detroit signed Cameron Sutton, Emmanuel Moseley and CJ Gardner-Johnson this March, and while the team could still use a long-term building block in case Jeff Okudah fails to pan out it can always target one with the 18th pick. A deep corner class instead leads the Lions to beef up their defensive front. Jalen Carter could be the play here, but his recent arraignment and frustrating pro day performance could instead lead Dan Campbell to add a beefy pass rusher to complement Aidan Hutchinson. Wilson is a beefy, edge collapsing presence with the explosion to get his 6-foot-6, 271-pound frame upfield in a hurry. He and Hutchinson can force opposing quarterbacks to step up in the pocket — and give Alim McNeill some easy clean-up sacks in the process. 10. Detroit Lions*** via projected trade with the Philadelphia Eagles (via New Orleans Saints): WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Ohio State: The Eagles send: their 10th overall pick, a seventh round pick (219th overall). The Lions send: their 18th overall pick, a second round pick (55th overall). Detroit’s depth at wideout was shredded by gambling suspensions and the Lions have a bunch of draft assets to throw at the wall this spring thanks to their Matthew Stafford and T.J. Hockenson trades. Moving up eight spots allows the pick of this year’s pass-catching crop, and that looks a lot like Smith-Njigba’s spot. Smith-Njigba is a bit of a wild card after playing in only five games last season due to a hamstring injury. But in workouts this spring he looked very much like the guy who averaged nearly 200 receiving yards per game over the final five weeks of the Buckeyes’ season. His routes snap like power lines in an ice storm and his body control near the sideline is eye-opening. His ability to get open and diverse route tree could give the Lions, with Amon-Ra St. Brown and Garrett Wilson (once he returns from suspension), the league’s best young receiving corps. 48. Walter Football (6. Devon Witherspoon: This pick wouldn't have been used on Devon Witherspoon had the draft been held about three weeks ago. Witherspoon hadn't worked out at that point, so there was some concern with his health. Those concerns have been resolved, however, as Witherspoon was able to put together a quality workout. Devon Witherspoon is not quite six feet, but he has incredible speed. His injury concerns could drop him into the teens or 20s. See where he ranks in our 2023 NFL Draft Prospect Rankings. Other 2023 NFL Draft Possibilities: 1. Bijan Robinson, RB - The Lions love Bijan Robinson, but the lean seems to be toward Devon Witherspoon at this point. 2. Will Anderson, DE - We've seen some strange falls before, but this would be the very bottom for Anderson. 18. Bijan Robinson, RB, Texas Texas: Charlie Campbell mocked Bijan Robinson to the Lions often throughout the pre-draft process, and it's easy to see why. The Lions signed David Montgomery, but he's a replacement for Jamaal Williams. Detroit wants a true home run hitter at the position, which was supposed to be D'Andre Swift, who hasn't been able to stay healthy. Robinson is going to be another running back chosen early in the draft, much like Saquon Barkley, who went No. 2 overall. All of his attributes are at sky-high levels. Sources have told Campbell that Robinson is the best player in this class, so he's a potential top-10 pick. Other 2023 NFL Draft Possibilities: 1. Jahmyr Gibbs, RB - Both running backs are in play at this pick. 2. Jack Campbell, LB - This is a bit early for Jack Campbell, so perhaps the Lions would slide down a few spots. Still, Campbell would provide a huge boost to the linebacking corps. 48. LB Jack Campbell: The Lions have a huge hole at linebacker, so perhaps they'll address it in the first two rounds of the 2023 NFL Draft. Jack Campbell has the size and athleticism to be a three-down player in the NFL. 55. Sam LaPorta, TE, Iowa Iowa: The Lions have an obvious hole at tight end because they traded T.J. Hockenson. Sam LaPorta is a bit short for his position, but could be a quality receiving threat. 81. CB Clark Phillips: The Lions may opt to select their second cornerback here to make sure they're terrific against the pass for when they battle the Eagles in the playoffs. Clark Phillips has some size issues, but has plenty of talent as a potential slot corner. 152. WR Elijah Higgins: The Lions will be searching for another receiver to pair with Jameson Willams and Amon-Ra St. Brown. Elijah Higgins has nice speed and an ability to separate. 159. DE K.J. Henry: The Lions could stand to add another pass rusher to combat Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen in the Super Bowl. K.J. Henry played better this past season than his numbers indicate. 183. OG Chandler Zavala: The Lions have an elite offensive line, but it never hurts to have depth up front. 194. QB Stetson Bennett: The Lions will likely be searching for a developmental quarterback on Day 3. Stetson Bennett was very clutch in big games for Georgia. He'll look to become the next Brock Purdy or Colt McCoy.) (4-26-23): https://walterfootball.com/draft2023.php
Walter football Charlie (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: The Lions only have Cam Sutton signed at corner beyond the 2023 season. Detroit could use more long-term cornerback talent, and Witherspoon is a great fit for the culture that Dan Campbell has put in place. Hands down, Witherspoon has the best tape of any corner in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he should play a prominent role as a rookie while being a cornerstone of the secondary for many years to come. Witherspoon recorded 40 tackles, three interceptions and 14 passes broken up in 2022. The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder impressed evaluators as he is a twitchy defender that is always around the ball and has fantastic instincts. Witherspoon is fast and athletic while being a devastating hitter. However, team sources are concerned about Witherspoon avoiding injuries because he hits so violently. Instead, he must protect himself in the NFL. 18. DE Nolan Smith: Detroit grabs some linebacker and edge-rush help. While Smith never played like a first-round pick in college, he has a shot at going in Round 1 of the 2023 NFL Draft because of his tremendous combine workout. Smith recorded 18 tackles and three sacks in 2022. He was a contributing edge rusher for Georgia in 2021, playing hard and totaling 55 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one interception and three forced fumbles. In 2020, Smith had 22 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The 6-foot-2, 238-pounder is quick off the edge, but he lacks size and length. Smith needs to get stronger for the NFL. 48. TE Sam LaPorta: Detroit was smart to trade T.J. Hockenson. He is an overrated player who is nearing a contract extension and wants to among the highest-paid tight ends in the NFL. Getting two second-day picks - '23 and '24 - for Hockenson from a division rival was a steal. While Brock Wright and James Mitchell flashed last season, the Lions could use one more tight end. LaPorta recorded 58 receptions for 657 yards and a touchdown in 2022. A number of team sources say they really like LaPorta (6-3, 245) and think he could be a steal in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft - provided he doesn't sneak into the bottom of Round 1. LaPorta is a touch undersized, but definitely has the ability to contribute as a receiving tight end at the next level. That was given further proof at the combine, where LaPorta ran fast and looked fantastic at running routes. Teams think he could be a dangerous receiving tight end in the NFL. LaPorta totaled 53 catches for 670 yards and three touchdowns in 2021 after notching 27 receptions for 271 yards and a score in the shortened 2020 season. 55. LB Jack Campbell: The Lions missed the playoffs last year because of losses where they couldn't stop running backs and mobile quarterbacks - e.g. against Carolina, Philadelphia. Detroit needs a linebacker upgrade to go with Alex Anzalone. Team sources really like Campbell and think he will go in the back half of the first round in the 2023 NFL Draft. They call him a taller version of Chad Muma and say he does some things that remind them of Luke Kuechly. The 6-foot-5, 249-pound Campbell has good size, strength, and enough athleticism to be a three-down starter. Campbell is very instinctive, smart, and showed more fluid pass-coverage skills than expected at the combine. In 2022, he collected 125 tackles, one pass batted, one sack, one forced fumble and two interceptions. One of those picks was a superb grab off of C.J. Stroud. In 2021, Campbell amassed 140 tackles, a sack, forced fumble, two interceptions and five pass breakups. 81. DT Keeanu Benton: The Lions could use an interior pass rusher. Benton recorded 36 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2022. The 6-foot-3, 312-pounder had a good week at the Senior Bowl, showing strength, quickness and physicality. He has starting defensive tackle potential for the NFL. While Benton is not a force as a run defender, he is a nice interior pass rusher. 152. CB Riley Moss: The Lions add more cornerback talent with a potential sleeper. 159. TE Will Mallory: The Lions add more tight end talent with a potential sleeper. 183. OG Chandler Zavala: The Lions add more competition at right guard. 194. G Jordan McFadden: The Lions could use more depth to protect Jared Goff.) CFN Final (6. DT Jalen Carter: Team Needs: Defensive Linemen, Running Back. This is about right. Negative leaks = someone wants the guy. After all of the dogging of Carter's heart, toughness, character, etc., he'll fall to the six because the five teams ahead of Detroit need other parts. The Lions will be more than happy to jump all over the pick. 18. RB Bijan Robinson - Team Needs: Defensive Linemen, Running Back. If you want to argue that Robinson goes to Seattle at the 5, okay. If you want to argue that Atlanta will make the big franchise changing call at the 8, or Philadelphia will do it at the 10? Sure. It's possible Detroit could do this at the 5, but because running back is so devalued now, the slide is almost certain.) CB Devon Witherspoon: The Lions made efforts to bolster their cornerback room in free agency, but none of their additions were costly enough to dissuade GM Brad Holmes from adding a blue-chip prospect at the position. 18. MLive Kyle Meinke (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: Perhaps the most-mocked player to Detroit throughout the draft process, although never by me. Heck, I haven’t mocked them a cornerback at all. After watching Brad Holmes prioritize his trenchplay over all else the last two years, I always believed he preferred another edge rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson, James Houston and Josh Paschal. Then free agency hit, and their biggest additions -- signing three starting-caliber defensive backs -- felt like a move toward where I had been with them all along. But you can only take who is available to you, and after Will Anderson and Tyree Wilson go in back-to-back picks ahead of them, the Lions could find more value by turning to their favorite cornerback instead. That might be Christian Gonzalez, who is taller, longer and faster than Devon Witherspoon. But watch those guys actually play football, and Witherspoon just oozes the style of this regime. His motor doesn’t quit. He hits like he’s carrying a grudge. He defends the run nearly as well as he defends the pass, and he defends the pass about as well as any prospect in the draft. And just in case you’re thinking it too -- yes, there’s some Aidan Hutchinson in his game. Witherspoon allowed just 35.5% of the 63 passes thrown his way to be completed last season, none of which scored a touchdown. He broke up 14 passes overall, which led all draft-eligible players. He was the top-graded cover man in this draft class, per ProFootballFocus. And he did it in a man-dominant defense, which surely will appeal to a Lions team that plays more man coverage than almost anyone else in the league. For a full explanation of the pick, and why I chose Witherspoon over Jalen Carter, click here for the explainer. 18. DE Myles Murphy: This would be a home-run scenario for the Lions. They want defensive line help at the top of the draft, but their ability to find it will be dictated by what happens in front of them. If Will Anderson or Tyree Wilson is available, that’s the pick. But both could be gone (as they are here), setting up the Jalen Carter dilemma. And if the Lions wind up sidestepping that human red flag, they’ll have defensive line at the top of their wish list at No. 18. I don’t think the Jameson Williams suspension alters that approach, either. I like Jaxon Smith-Njigba as much as anyone, but the Lions already have Amon-Ra St. Brown in the slot anyway. In this projection, the Lions land a pass rusher who was widely regarded as a top-10 pick at the outset of the draft process. At 6-foot-5 and 271 pounds, Murphy is a freak athlete who can bench press 405 pounds, deadlift 505 pounds and ran the 40 in 4.53 seconds at his pro day. He was one of the top freaks in all of college football, according to Bruce Feldman’s annual list. He was also a quarterback-eater, finishing with the third-most sacks ever by a freshman at Clemson, before adding 14.5 sacks and 25.5 tackles for loss in the last two seasons. He also happens to be terrifying against the run, and like Aidan Hutchinson, he’s regarded as a high-motor player who brings everything he’s got from across the front. Murphy was a right defensive end in base sets, but slid everywhere from 4i and three-technique all the way to wide nine-technique.) Fox sports Klatt (6. CB Christian Gonzalez - Klatt on Gonzalez to the Lions: "The Lions need a lot of defensive help. They have a chance, with Aaron Rodgers moving on from Green Bay, now all of a sudden that division seems to be up in the air. Detroit could very easily be the best team in this division next season — particularly if they are able to hit some home runs in this draft. This is a pass defense that needs some length, they need some aggressiveness. With Jeff Okudah moving now, you can get some of that length back with Christian Gonzalez. He has a great bloodline. His dad was a 6-foot-9 basketball player from UTEP. He's aggressive and has good ball skills. … He’s a guy that I think is the best corner in the draft, and I think the Lions take him." 18. DT Calijah Kancey - Klatt on Kancey to the Lions: "In this position, at least with how my draft board has broken down, the Lions have the chance to get a really productive and dominant defensive tackle. They already have a good rush. Aidan Hutchinson has been really good. Great rookie season. They're going to get Christian Gonzalez with their first pick, and now they can get Calijah Kancey with this pick. "He's super productive. He's played well over 30 games in his career at Pitt and he's got a TFL per game in his career. Behind the line of scrimmage production from the tackle spot is very rare and he gives it to you. He's sudden. He's explosive. And Detroit could have one of these fronts that is very explosive and forcing a lot of pressure on the quarterback, giving young corners the opportunity to get their hands on the football.") PFF Analysts (6. DE Will Anderson Jr., Alabama: Even with James Houston IV and Aidan Hutchinson on the roster, Anderson is too talented of a pass rusher for the Lions to pass up. 18. CB Brian Branch, Alabama: After going defensive line with their first pick, the Lions will likely look to bolster their defensive back room with their second first-round selection. Branch is the perfect player for this secondary. 48. TE Darnell Washington, Georgia: If Washington makes it all the way to Pick Nio. 49, he becomes an instant starter for the Lions. He is a unique matchup in the receiving game and an extra offensive lineman as a blocker. 55. LB Jack Campbell, Iowa: This feels like a Dan Campbell type of player, a throwback, between-the-tackles linebacker who brings some extra juice. Campbell could find a starting role quickly in Detroit. 81. WR Michael Wilson, Stanford: Wilson is a strong possession wide receiver who can play on or off the line of scrimmage. His profile as a blocker will also get him on the field early. 152. CB Mekhi Garner, LSU: The Lions spent a lot of money to upgrade their secondary from 2022's woes, but they'll still look to add some new names via the draft. Garner could be a solid player to bet on in the middle rounds. 159. LB Noah Sewell, Oregon: Sewell is a throwback linebacker who joins his brother Penei as a young prospect at only 20 years old. 183. PFN Hasan (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: Finding a cornerback with the tenacity that Dan Campbell desires is usually tough, but this draft class is full of them. In this case, they take a cornerback who may not have been available to test at this year’s Combine, but Devon Witherspoon might be one of the most functionally athletic in the class. He showcases high-level technical capability as a coverage player and a willingness to stick it in the run game. 18. DE Myles Murphy: The Lions will want to supplement their Aidan Hutchinson rush plan with another edge rusher. A big rusher like Myles Murphy could help do that. Murphy has a great first step and good awareness in the run game that should align well with Detroit’s defensive vision and team overall. 48. DT Mazi Smith: There may not be a better slot-team fit in the draft than Mazi Smith to Detroit. 55. TE Sam LaPorta: Brock Wright did an excellent job for the Lions after trading T.J. Hockenson, but it would absolutely help to get Sam LaPorta in that room. 81. NFL Wire Final (6. CB Devon Witherspoon, Illinois: Witherspoon would fill a massive long-term need for the Lions at outside CB, where the team has just two players signed beyond 2023. His aggressive, physical press-man style is a great fit for the Lions, who play more press-man than any other team. Witherspoon had the highest PFF grade of any CB in the draft in 2022 and forced the second-most incompletions in college football, and did so while also being stout in run defense. He’s exactly what the Lions want on defense. – Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire. 18. OG O’Cyrus Torrence, Florida: This might be a little early for the top true guard prospect in the draft, but Torrence has the pedigree to merit the interest. The behemoth didn’t allow a single sack in four years of starting in college between his first three years at Louisiana and his final season at Florida. Torrence is the best people-mover in the run game in the draft, and his anchor versus bull rushes is NFL-ready. With their top three guards all entering their final contract seasons, building for the future on the offensive line makes sense for Detroit. – Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire. 48. QB Hendon Hooker: Hooker would be long gone by this point if he was healthy. The torn ACL that will likely sideline the 25-year-old for at least some of his rookie campaign is a complicating factor. The Lions are set with Jared Goff starting, so they can afford to give Hooker a redshirt NFL season and teach him how to read more advanced defenses. Hooker’s downfield accuracy, poised pocket presence, confident leadership and ability to make plays with his legs make him an optimal fit for coordinator Ben Johnson’s creative, aggressive offense in Detroit. – Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire. 55. DT Keeanu Benton: The Lions’ biggest need on defense for 2023 is at tackle, specifically a stout presence who smothers the run while also providing some interior pass rush. That’s Benton. He wears his “grit factor” proudly on his broad shoulders just as Lions head coach Dan Campbell rocks the “Grit” hat. Benton can play either DT spot, joining young Alim McNeill in giving the Lions the ability to mix-and-match along the line to create better matchups. – Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire) (4-24-23): https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/lists/2023-nfl-mock-draft-quarterback-run-bryce-young-cj-stroud-anthony-richardson-will-levis-first-round-projections/

He is extremely agile in coverage downfield with plenty of speed to keep up on vertical routes. Witherspoon plays with an attitude and plenty of energy as a willing, physical tackler, not something that can be said of all cornerbacks. He plays with the kind of attitude a Dan Campbell defender needs to bring to the table. 18. DT Calijah Kancey: Pitt defensive tackle Calijah Kancey has plenty of measurables similar to Aaron Donald, the Pitt alum whose NFL Combine 40-yard dash record for defensive tackles was broken by Kancey. USA Today Nate Davis (6. CB Devon Witherspoon, Illinois: A defense that ranked dead last in 2022 and just dumped disappointing CB Jeff Okudah seems like a perfect home for a tough-as-nails defensive back like Witherspoon, who's not afraid to stick his nose in the backfield when he's not disrupting opposing passing attacks – the All-Big Ten performer breaking up 23 passes over the past two seasons. 18. DT Calijah Kancey, Pittsburgh: When you think undersized Pitt interior D-linemen who live behind the line of scrimmage ... OK, OK, let's not saddle Kancey with the Aaron Donald comparison. But let's celebrate the 6-1, 281-pounder who dropped a 4.67-second 40 at the combine after posting 14½ sacks and 27½ TFLs for the Panthers over the past two years combined. Now imagine adding the reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year to the middle of a Detroit defense featuring Aidan Hutchinson and all the opposing attention he merits on the edge.He catches (138 receptions for 1,649 yards over past two seasons), he blocks, he scores (16 TDs over past two seasons), and the 2022 All-American is huge (6-5, 249 pounds). He'd certainly garner appreciation from a former tight end like Campbell and for a team that needs to replace T.J. Hockenson, who was traded last season.) Peter King (6. DETROIT: Will Anderson, edge rusher, Alabama. Well now. How about the Lions getting the top edge-rush prospects (on many boards) in two successive drafts—Aidan Hutchinson and Anderson? Most interesting quote from a GM in the market for an edge rusher: “Tyree Wilson’s a swing for the fences. Will Anderson’s a solid double.” This pick also fits the Lions—right now—because of the gambling suspensions they were hit with last week. It’s a tough call here, with cornerback also being a long-term need and every corner left on the board—including Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon, who’s the kind of uber-physical hitter who’d fit in well with the tough-guy coaching staff of Dan Campbell. But Anderson’s a solid, positive pick, another brick in the wall for GM Brad Holmes in his attempt to build a division champion, and more, in no-longer-woebegone Detroit. 18. DETROIT: Deonte Banks, cornerback, Marpyland. Storyline I would urge you NOT to buy: With the gambling suspension of Jameson Williams, look for the Lions to consider seriously a dive into the receiver market here. Nope. Once the Lions found out the ban would be for six weeks, they figured they wouldn’t upset their draft plans and take a wideout early. After jettisoning Jeff Okudah to Atlanta pre-draft, the rising Banks is a strong candidate here.) NFL.com Edholm (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: You don't typically see 180-pound corners selected this highly in the draft. But Witherspoon's bulldog mentality belies his size and reflects the kind of competitors Dan Campbell wants on defense. Trading away Jeff Okudah opens up a top-three CB job for Witherspoon to win right away. 31. DT Calijah Kancey: Projected Trade With Kansas City Chiefs. Doubling down on defense wouldn’t be the worst idea for Detroit, as Round 2 still should be rich with TE talent. Kancey is smaller than Levi Onwuzurike but could provide more pass-rush juice than Onwuzurike has to this point, and given Brad Holmes’ Rams background, taking an undersized penetrator would not be out of character or shocking.) PFN Miller Final (3. Detroit Lions (From ARI): C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State - Trade: Detroit sends pick Nos. 6, 81, and 2024 first-round and third-round picks to Arizona for pick No. 3. Lions fans may very well hate this, and I wouldn’t necessarily blame them for hating it on the surface level. Detroit has been an offseason darling, and the team appears so very close to being a true competitor in the NFC. But as an organization, you cannot be near-sighted, even when you’re on the doorstep of a division title for the first time since joining the NFC North. Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell don’t want to throw all their eggs in the Jared Goff basket. They don’t want to hand him a massive extension next offseason, and they will be too good with Goff to adequately replace him in the 2024 NFL Draft. C.J. Stroud offers them a player who realistically can be a better version of Goff somewhat quickly along his NFL journey while having the upside of a more athletic Dak Prescott. In the NFC’s QB ecosystem, that would make him a top-three QB in the conference. 18. CB Deonte Banks: Speaking of grabby tendencies, Deonte Banks is a Detroit Lion. Cornerback was already a need for Detroit, and after trading Jeff Okudah, it became the team’s most significant need alongside tight end (which they intelligently avoided here). Banks may need to clean some things up technically and be able to play a reactionary role in coverage (more man and simple zone) early on, but he is a Dan Campbell player through and through. Nobody in college football showed more physical dominance relative to their position. Banks will bite kneecaps. He has reps where he literally pressed a receiver into the backfield on a pass play, while on some run reps, he can be seen lowering a shoulder into sniffers and blowing up backs larger than himself. 48. DT Calijah Kancey: Calijah Kancey is someone a lot of people love because of his athleticism and pass-rushing upside. The problem is he’s likely not a three-down player anytime early in his career because of his skill set. Simply being small or lacking length is not inherently bad. Some players can utilize the functional length they have to bludgeon blockers or defenders. However, Kancey’s lack of length shows on tape a lot, which is why he falls outside of the first round. But playing alongside a strong group of defensive linemen in Detroit will allow Aaron Glenn the freedom to unleash Kancey’s athleticism as a rusher. 55. TE Tucker Kraft: There is a ton of buzz around Sam LaPorta, but I preferred Tucker Kraft’s tape, personally. I believe the South Dakota State TE is also a better fit in Detroit than LaPorta. The Lions traded away an inconsistent blocker who they spent a first-round pick on a few years back, although he produced as a receiver. While they were likely just moving early to get some compensation because they knew they weren’t extending him, it appears the blocking side of things could be a necessity for them. In poetic fashion, the selection they received in the T.J. Hockenson trade ends up being another TE.) PFN Valentine (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: With Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell emphatically stating, “Man, we got a quarterback” in Jared Goff, I have a hard time seeing them forcing this pick at the position. Instead, the Lions need secondary help, as their cornerback room has been inconsistent. Taking Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon over Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez would be dicey, but it would make sense that a staff filled with former players would favor the less-gifted athlete who is a better technician right now. 18. RB Bijan Robinson: Bijan Robinson is one of the few running backs over the last five draft classes who’s worth a first-round pick. Pairing him with the punishing run game that Detroit already has in place makes too much sense. Robinson could push for 2,000 yards in Ben Johnson’s offense. 48. DT Bryan Bresee: We’re going back to the defensive side of the ball for the Lions, this time adding a strong man in the middle of a run-defending unit that has to improve. If his medicals check out, Bryan Bresee can be a well-rounded starter throughout his rookie deal. 55. QB Hendon Hooker: Hendon Hooker has all of the tools needed to be a very good NFL quarterback, but he’ll need time after coming from an Art Briles offense that was as simple as it gets. Detroit can offer Hooker time and a solid structure in which he can develop. 81. TE Tucker Kraft: The T.J. Hockenson trade opened the door for a new starter in Detroit. Tucker Kraft has everything you want for a stud producer at the position, including great acceleration for his size. 152. DE Mike Morris: Though Detroit has poured assets into the defense, the tackle position could use reinforcements. Mike Morris provides solid depth. 183. DT Nesta Jade Silvera: A great 3-technique body, Nesta Jade Silvera will need time to refine his skills, but the traits are there to be a quality player. 194. LB Mohamoud Diabate: A former starter at Florida and then Utah, Mohamoud Diabate is one of the best athletes in the class. DT Bryan Bresee: Bresee is someone who went through a lot the last two seasons at Clemson, but with that being behind him he is still the elite talent we saw earlier in his career and would be a home run fit here in Detroit.) PFN Garrett (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: I love the Detroit Lions heading into 2023 to take the next step and compete in the NFC North and the conference as a whole. They positioned themselves in free agency to have multiple options at No. 6 overall, but cornerback remains the No. 1 position to target. It’s arguably the deepest position of the class, and the physicality of Devon Witherspoon feels like the type of corner Dan Campbell wants on his team. With Cam Sutton on a three-year deal and one-year contracts for C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Emmanuel Moseley, Witherspoon is the long-term option for Detroit as their premier, lockdown cornerback in what has become an exciting era of Lions football. 18. DT Bryan Bresee: With Witherspoon already on the team, Dan Campbell further secures the trenches with the 6’6”, 298-pound defensive tackle from Clemson: Bryan Bresee. Aidan Hutchinson was a home-run pick and finished his rookie season second in DPOY voting with 9.5 sacks, 52 tackles, two fumble recoveries, and three interceptions. Now I'm even more confident corner is the pick here. If that's the case, Witherspoon makes a lot of sense. Grabbing Kerby Joseph from Illinois last year worked out, and Witherspoon is the tough, instinctual competitor you long for at corner. 18. DE Myles Murphy: I felt the 2022 season was Murphy's worst season at Clemson (he finished with six sacks and 21 hurries anyway), and I think a lot of that can be pinned on his DC Brent Venables leaving to take over at Oklahoma. PFN Hodgkinson (6. CB Christian Gonzalez: Cornerback has long been considered a potential pick for the Detroit Lions in the first round, and the departure of Jeff Okudah strengthens the case. A phenomenal NFL Combine performance likely cemented Christian Gonzalez’s CB1 claim, quantifying the on-tape speed, fluidity, and explosion. Meanwhile, the Oregon CB’s ball skills give him lockdown potential at the NFL level. 18. TE Michael Mayer: Wide receiver could be a legitimate target with the Lions’ second pick on Day 1. However, with the selection of Notre Dame tight end Michael Mayer in this 2023 NFL Mock Draft, Detroit gets a player with the pass-catching ability of some of the best WRs in the class who also benefits the offense with a physical and technically impressive approach to blocking as a tight end. 48. LB Trenton Simpson: Clemson linebacker Trenton Simpson gives the Lions another impactful defensive piece in this 2023 NFL Mock Draft. WR Jalin Hyatt: Although they welcome back Marvin Jones to Ford Field, don’t be surprised to see the Lions add further WR talent in the 2023 NFL Draft. Jalin Hyatt’s speed, explosion, and ball-tracking capability make the Detroit offense difficult to defend. 81. Fox sports Vitali and Helman (6. DT Jalen Carter: Carter may have the most talent, but he needs to go to the right situation to be successful. There are off-the-field issues with Carter, some of which have nothing to do with the tragic incident a couple months ago in Athens, Ga. Carter showed up to his pro day overweight and out of shape — so much so that he couldn't finish his workout. There are more red flags there than we are collectively talking about, but winding up with the Lions, where a majority of the coaching staff has high-level playing experience, could be what Carter needs to make the transition to NFL life. We already know he has the talent. 18. WR Quentin Johnston: This is wonderful value for Detroit, as they get a big-bodied receiver to win on the outside, as well as inside the red zone. Johnston is 6-foot-3 and weighs over 200 pounds so he can grab the 50-50 balls that Amon-Ra St. Brown may not get to. This time they aren’t missing out on their possible Justin Herbert. And if the Texans already have their eyes on next year’s quarterback class it may not take much draft capital to move up from the sixth overall pick. Stroud’s addition gives the Lions the flexibility to move on from Jared Goff’s $32 million cap hits in 2024 to go all-in on a Super Bowl window. 18. CB Joey Porter Jr., Penn State: The Lions traded away Jeffrey Okudah because they knew this class has some press coverage dynamos. PFF Analytics Mock (6. DT Jalen Carter: Off-field concerns notwithstanding, Carter would likely be the first non-quarterback taken in the draft with zero hesitation. Over the past two seasons among FBS interior defenders, Carter ranks fifth in pass-rush win rate on true pass sets (23.2%) and fourth in pressure percentage (19.6%). The Lions added two starting-caliber outside cornerbacks in free agency, so here they address arguably their biggest remaining weakness. 18. CB Deonte Banks: The Lions traded away Jeff Okudah to the Falcons and now need a new starting cornerback for Aaron Glenn’s scheme. Banks is the best cornerback on the board and would be a good addition to Detroit's secondary with his frame and athleticism. WR Quentin Johnston: Detroit already has its slot guy (Amon-Ra St. Brown) and its speed guy (Jameson Williams), and here lands its big guy in the 6-2 3/4, 208-pound Johnston. PFN Mellor Final Mock (6. CB Christian Gonzalez: The best pure man coverage cornerback in the class, Christian Gonzalez is the easy pick here, and the Detroit Lions need an answer at the position. Flashing brilliance in his lone season at Oregon, Gonzalez put forth a teach-tape clinic in each game as the season progressed. 18. He certainly has the arm reach and wingspan to dominate at the next level, especially since he won't be getting the double team with Hutchinson next to him. Adding moves to his repertoire, Wilson could use his raw power to control the game on the edge. This is another trade down candidate to a quarterback-needy team. 18. TE Dalton Kincaid: This is a luxury pick for the Lions, who could trade down and stockpile more picks for this draft (or in 2024). With Kincaid on the board and Detroit needing a tight end to improve an already good offense, the Lions don't hesitate to get arguably the best catching tight end in the draft. Kincaid's ability in the slot would be dangerous for defenses, which already have to worry about stopping Amon-Ra St. Brown.) PFN Yates (6. CB Devon Witherspoon: The Lions just sent away Jeff Okudah, which means that CB is right back at the top of their team needs list. Emmanuel Moseley and Cameron Sutton were fantastic additions in free agency, but depth at cornerback is crucial in today’s NFL. Devon Witherspoon fits what Dan Campbell wants in a cornerback so well. He’s sticky in man coverage, tenacious, and he plays more physical than you would expect for a player that’s only 181 pounds. Witherspoon’s addition to this secondary makes Detroit’s defense a young and terrifying unit to deal with in the NFC North. 18 DE Lukas Van Ness: Dan Campbell might run through a wall like the Kool-Aid Man if Lukas Van Ness is still here on the board for them at pick 18. The Iowa EDGE is a projection at the next level, but he’s tough as nails and packs a mighty punch when attempting to get to the quarterback. Despite not playing all that much at Iowa — due to coaching philosophy — Van Ness consistently showed his power and ability to disrupt the pocket, whether out at 5-tech or kicking inside. A pass-rushing duo of Aidan Hutchinson and Van Ness, with Sam Houston rotating in, is scary.) PFF Monson (11. Detroit Lions (Via Ten): CB Joey Porter Jr - The Lions trading back from No. 6 makes me feel a lot better about grabbing a cornerback at this spot. Most people would have Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez here, but I worry about a lot of his game. Joey Porter Jr. is the best press-man cornerback in the draft, but he has plenty of zone ability, as well. Over the past two seasons, he earned an 80.0-plus PFF coverage grade in zone coverage. 18. CB Christian Gonzalez: I am far lower on Christian Gonzalez than most — a player with sick movement skills and elite athleticism but who never allowed a passer rating lower than 74.7 in his college career. There’s significant risk attached to his projection, and I feel a lot better about that gamble if I’m playing with house money the way Detroit would be here having already drafted Porter. This is the type of double-dip that could pay off down the line for a team looking to have long-term, sustained success.) PFN Cummings (6. DE Tyree Wilson: Tyree Wilson was incredibly productive over the past two seasons — amassing 14 sacks and 27.5 tackles for loss. Yet, he still hasn’t come close to reaching his ceiling as a prospect. The flashes of quick, violent hand usage are very inspiring, but Wilson’s hyper-elite power profile is truly special. Across from Aidan Hutchinson, he’d be dangerous. 18. CB Deonte Banks: The Lions no longer have an immediate need at CB after signing Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley to accompany Jeffrey Okudah. But soon enough, the position will be light again. It makes sense to get Deonte Banks in the room and start coaching up his technique. His elite athleticism and steely physicality could pay dividends down the line. 48. RB Jahmyr Gibbs: The Lions have a new primary runner in David Montgomery, but soon, D’Andre Swift will be a free agent. It makes sense to add Jahmyr Gibbs as a versatile, dynamic offensive weapon if he falls to a certain point. His open-field burst is kryptonite for ill-fated safeties. 55. QB Hendon Hooker: The Lions have kept tabs on Hendon Hooker through the draft process, and if he falls this far, they could pull the trigger. Jared Goff is still Detroit’s starter, but at the very least, Hooker can be a developmental backup, with the physical ability to grow into more. 81. TE Sam LaPorta: The Lions don’t need a world-beater at TE. They just need a steady presence, and that’s what Sam LaPorta can be with his mobility, route nuance, and natural catching instincts. 152. PFN Broback (6. DE Myles Murphy: With Aidan Hutchinson already on the roster, one side of the Lions’ defensive line is set. Imagine how much better this defense would be if they had a terrifying duo on the edge. Detroit needs to get after the quarterback more in 2023, and what better way to do that than by adding Myles Murphy? Murphy produced 31 tackles for loss and 18 sacks on a loaded Clemson defensive line and improved every year that he played. He’ll need to learn the nuances of the NFL, but the foundation is there to build upon and make him one of the better pass rushers in the league. 18. CB Joey Porter Jr: Detroit’s defense wasn’t exactly elite last year, but this is a hungry group. They already added an elite pass rusher earlier in the first round of this 2023 NFL Mock Draft, but they’re not done adding talent. Joey Porter Jr. brings good length and physicality to the defense and creates an exciting duo with Jeff Okudah. Teams already have to worry about blocking the Lions on the edge, but now they must worry about where they throw the ball downfield. 48. TE Luke Musgrave: When the Lions traded T.J. Hockenson, tight end became a positional need. The offense needs a few more pass catchers to emerge, so Luke Musgrave is a great option here. His game still needs some work, but the raw tools he’s displayed make him a great prospect. If Detroit can expedite his development, this offense has incredible potential. 55. LB Jack Campbell: Some believe that Jack Campbell is the best linebacker in the class, so Detroit’s getting a steal in this 2023 NFL Mock Draft. Campbell fits the stereotype of Iowa linebackers by being a natural playmaker with good instincts and play recognition. What he does better than those before him is play in space. Campbell’s athleticism allows him to cover players downfield better than most, and that athleticism makes him an intriguing player in the first two rounds. Detroit’s defense boasts some players with great potential, and the draft should only add more weapons to that unit. 81. DT Karl Brooks: Not many are talking about Karl Brooks, but they should be. Detroit’s making big changes to the defensive side of the ball in this 2023 NFL Mock Draft, and Brooks is the latest addition. He’s a smart player who can adapt on the fly, and his explosiveness makes him a potentially great player on a line that will feature Aidan Hutchinson and first-round pick Myles Murphy.) Fox sports writers (6. DT Jalen Carter: If he falls this far, the Lions aren’t going to be able to resist. From the coaches I’ve talked to, Carter is the real deal and perhaps worth some of the off-the-field concerns. He’s big and strong enough to run you over but has all the finesse of an outside pass-rusher with the way he uses his hands, his leverage and his ability to flip his hips. That’s not a combination you see very often, if ever, and Detroit’s defensive front is all of a sudden one of the scariest in the NFL. – Carmen Vitali. 18. CB Brian Branch: The minute the Lions started getting creative with their secondary, their pass defense improved dramatically down the stretch last season. Getting a Swiss-Army knife player such as Branch would help round out that entire unit so Detroit can hit the ground running in 2023. – Carmen Vitali) (4-5-23): https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2023-nfl-mock-draft-football-writers-make-all-31-first-round-picks
PFN Platte (3. Detroit Lions (From ARI): Anthony Richardson, QB, Florida (Compensation: Two first-round picks and two second-round picks.): Trading into the top five is not cheap, and the Lions would likely be paying a fair premium to beat out the other teams attempting to move up. That said, two firsts and two seconds seems downright cheap, considering how well Brad Holmes has capitalized on his investments. Anthony Richardson is the most athletic QB in NFL history, taking that crown from former MVP Cam Newton and former All-Pro Daunte Culpepper. Like Jared Goff’s two seasons in Detroit, Richardson started off with a rough stretch with turnovers but finished strong down the stretch. He finished the 2022 season with only two interceptions over six games, to 12 touchdowns through the air, with another four touchdowns on the ground.) NFL.com Freuland (6. DT Calijah Kancey: Overall, Kancey is my 18th highest-rated prospect … and this is slot No. 6. … Are you picking up what I’m putting down, Detroit? Maybe see if you can add an extra pick or two in a later round and still get this guy, Motor City Kitties. Keen free agency moves at the corner position makes addressing the interior of the defensive line the value play here. Kancey had a ridiculous NFL Scouting Combine, and I was also able to watch his Pitt film with a few team execs to ask questions. Without being overly mathy, we looked at a few different ways of measuring his impact, and the one that stood out most to me was his lateral speed after traveling forward, which ranked in the top 5 percent of a 10-season sample. You know who might be great at understanding this value? GM Brad Holmes, who has experience with Aaron Donald from his Rams days. There are obvious connections there, but the main one is really valuing a prospect who is not a prototype. 18. TE Dalton Kincaid: The Lions have a strong O-line (forecasts to be in the top echelon) already, so Kincaid’s value is really about his pass-catching prowess. He was highly productive last year (70 catches for 890 yards), showcasing real ability after the catch.) ESPN Tannebaum (6. DE Tyree Wilson: The Lions allowed the second-most yards per pass (7.9) last season and ranked 20th in sacks per dropback (6.1%). They added Cam Sutton, C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Emmanuel Moseley through free agency, and I thought about another defensive back here. But Wilson had an outstanding career at Texas Tech after transferring from Texas A&M and logged 14 sacks over the past two seasons. He's long and plays with heavy hands. Wilson paired with Aidan Hutchinson provides Detroit an outstanding duo of pass-rushers for the next decade. 18. DT Jalen Carter: Detroit performed poorly in a number of defensive categories last year, including bottom-three figures in passing yards against per attempt, rushing yards against per attempt and opponent third-down conversion rate. I got the Lions an edge rusher earlier, but I'm not done building up this defensive line. A team with multiple first-round picks can take a calculated risk. Carter is just that. He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing after an arrest during combine week, and he appeared out of shape at his pro day in mid-March. But despite just six sacks over the past two seasons, his talent is on another level, and this could end up a great pick at No. 18.) Fox sports Aumen (11. Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois: Detroit needed to aggressively upgrade its defense, and adding corner Cam Sutton and safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson are big steps toward that. But Witherspoon would allow the Lions to move on from Jeff Okudah. Had the Lions stayed put at No. 6, you could have seen them take a pass-rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson, but this is good value with an extra top-50 pick for another starter. 18. Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia: Head coach Dan Campbell was a tight end, the Lions lost T.J. Hockenson and, most importantly, Washington is a beast. At 6-foot-7 and 264 pounds, he still ran a 4.64-second 40. He was Georgia's second-best tight end, only because Brock Bowers will be a high draft pick in 2024. In theory, Detroit could trade down a few spots and still get Washington or Utah's Dalton Kincaid, who's smaller but was more productive in college.) SI NFL Draft Bible (6. CB Devon Witherspoon, Illinois: The class of cornerbacks got interesting after seeing them in All-Star games and at the Scouting Combine. Witherspoon has separated himself as the best at his position, leaving the Lions with an easy option to strengthen their secondary. 18. Bryan Bresee, Clemson: All the moves the Lions are making in the offseason are putting them in a spot to compete for a Super Bowl run. Yes, you heard that right. Putting Bresee next to Aidan Hutchinson and adding Gonzalez to the secondary can make this defense a young nucleus of superstars.)
