Round 1 Pick 18 LB Jack Campbell Analysis and Grades

ESPN Analysis (Round 1, No. 18 overall: Jack Campbell, MLB, Iowa - My take: Campbell fills a defensive need on the roster. The Lions' run defense allowed 5.22 yards per carry last season, which was the third worst in the league. So, he’ll help address that issue. With Campbell, Detroit is bringing in a unanimous All-American and the 2022 Butkus Award winner (given to the nation’s top linebacker). The Lions like his size (6-foot-5, 249 pounds) and production, as he finished his career at Iowa with nearly 300 tackles, including 143 in 2021.  What we're hearing: “He is a Detroit guy. He is a Dan Campbell guy. He’s a culture fit immediately. He was a captain,” Lions linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard said after drafting Campbell on Thursday.  "First time looking at Jack, I've kind of seen these linebackers before -- he's big and he's a plugger. But actually, no, he's not," Holmes said. "The more you look at him, the more athletic his traits came out and became very, very visible and then you start looking at the athletic numbers that he's produced in terms of a lot of top-five athletic categories among all the linebackers in this year's draft."):  https://www.espn.com/blog/detroit-lions/post/_/id/39077/detroit-lions-nfl-draft-picks-2023-analysis-for-every-selection

ESPN Tracker (Jack Campbell (2 POS RK, 58 OVR RK, 80 GRADE):  Pre-Draft Analysis - Campbell has the size and strength to hold up between the tackles. He's a strong wrap-up tackler who chases with good effort. He shows good awareness, and his size is an asset in underneath zone coverage. He matches up well with tight ends. Campbell has some tightness and lacks recovery speed. -- Steve Muench.  Matt Miller's NFL comp: Leighton Vander Esch.  Post-Draft Analysis - Campbell has fantastic size, range and tackling ability in the middle of the defense and will step right into the middle linebacker position in the team's 4-3 defense. He is tough to throw over or around and is an active, aggressive tackler with a fantastic short-area burst. Campbell's the new anchor of Detroit's defense. -- Miller.  Projected Year 1 impact: Plug-and-play starter. The Lions signed Alex Anzalone to a three-year deal, but Campbell represents an upgrade. It wouldn't be a surprise if he won the starting job. -- Muench): https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft/teams/_/name/det/detroit-lions

NFL.com Brooks Analysis (18.  Jack Campbell:  Campbell is an old-school thumper with the instincts, range and diagnostic skills to play downhill and sideline to sideline. With outstanding size, the productive 'backer will serve as a traffic cop in the middle of the defense for Detroit and has the potential to make a ton of plays.):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2023-nfl-draft-bucky-brooks-pick-by-pick-analysis-for-round-1

USA Today Tracker (18. Lions – LB Jack Campbell, Iowa:  Maybe the biggest surprise of the first round, but Detroit opts for the 6-5, 249-pound All-Big Ten performer to punch up a defense that surrendered the most yards in the league in 2022. Despite his size, Campbell should be a three-down backer, better in coverage than as a blitzer.:  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2023/04/27/nfl-draft-first-round-pick-tracker-2023-live-updates/11743498002/

PFF Tracker (18.  Jack Campbell (OVR - 39, POS 1 / 30,) - Pick Grade:Below Average.  Campbell is the top linebacker on the PFF big board but was just 39th overall. It’s not a good value pick, but he produced a 91.9 PFF grade, which led all linebackers. At 6-foot-5 and 249 pounds, he has impressive size and NFL-caliber range.):  https://www.pff.com/draft/tracker

Fantasy Pro (No. 18 - Detroit Lions - Jack Campbell (LB - Iowa) (Thor's Rankings (Overall/Position): No. 36 Overall | LB1, Thor's Player Comp: Leighton Vander Esch.  Erickson's NFL Draft Outlook:  Jack Campbell averaged 9.8 tackles per game and a 14% team tackle share - both second-best in the 2023 linebacker class. He's a do-it-all linebacker with size (249 pounds, 6' 4).):  https://www.fantasypros.com/2023/04/nfl-draft-live-team-pick-grades-fantasy-analysis-round-1/

Grades:

CBS (18. Lions: Jack Campbell, LB, Iowa - Grade: A+.  I love this pick for the Lions. This kid will be special. He is big, can run and will improve as a cover player as he gets acclimated to the NFL game. He's one of my favorite players in this draft.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2023-nfl-draft-grades-tracker-analysis-and-projections-for-all-first-round-picks-nfl-draft-order/

SN (Grade: B+.  Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes fill another immediate sneaky need here for a dominant second-level playmaker to upgrade from Alex Anzalone. He’s a very athletic well-rounded playmaker, but it’s a tad questionable for them to take him over Trenton Simpson and Drew Sanders given their higher overall upside.):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/draft/2023/team/detroit-lions/5dqwb6vkqhagy6no1kbg1dnga

Fox sports (18.  Detroit Lions: Jack Campbell, LB, Iowa:  Rang: The two biggest reaches of the 2023 NFL draft, thus far, were both turned in by the Lions. I’m certainly intrigued by the height and change-of-direction combination. And Campbell’s production, as well as Iowa’s track record for producing quality NFL prospects, speak for themselves. But with sub 32-inch arms, Campbell is not as long or explosive as his size would suggest and that could mean trouble at the next level. I take no joy in a contrarian viewpoint on the All-American, but frankly, I view Campbell as currently more of a ‘tweener who needs a clean fit to start in the NFL, rather than the plug-in Pro-Bowler his hype suggests. Grade: B):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/nfl-draft-live-updates-commentary-analysis

FTW (18.  Detroit Lions: Jack Campbell, LB, Iowa.  So here’s the thing. Jahmyr Gibbs? Great player. Jack Campbell? Potentially even better. The reigning Butkus Award winner was the nation’s top linebacker and showed off wonderful agility and strength at the NFL combine. I have no doubt about his ability to be a great pro over the next decade.  But Campbell was in the mix at the top of a solid, but not overwhelming corps of off-ball linebackers. The Lions could have waited for him with one of their three second-round picks or opted for comparable inside linebackers like Drew Sanders or Trenton Simpson there.  Drafting Gibbs at 12 cost them shots at Van Ness, Forbes and Gonzalez. Drafting Campbell may mean passing up higher-rated prospects like Myles Murphy, Deonte Banks or Calijah Kancey. The players Detroit is selecting are very good! The value they’re getting at the picks they’re using to select them is not.  But hey, Campbell’s one of my favorite players in this draft. That’s worth at least a “B” on its own. — CD.  Grade: B):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-draft-first-round-grades-tracker-2023

Instant grade of the Detroit Lions selection of LB Jack Campbell (Grade:  B-):  https://lionswire.usatoday.com/2023/04/27/instant-grade-detroit-lions-draft-jack-campbell/

Walter football (Detroit Lions: Jack Campbell, LB, Iowa - B- Grade.  I had Jack Campbell going to the Lions in the second round. However, this is not like the Will McDonald selection because I've had Campbell going in the 20s on occasion, as we knew there was some interest from teams in that range. Campbell will also fill a huge need for Detroit. Still, I wish the Lions would have traded down for Campbell.):  https://walterfootball.com/nfldraftgrades.php

Touchdown wire (Detroit Lions select Jack Campbell with the 18th pick. Grade: C):  https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/2023/04/27/detroit-lions-select-jahmyr-gibbs-with-the-12th-pick-grade-b/

Draftwire (18. Detroit Lions: LB Jack Campbell, Iowa - Detroit reached for a position with low value with their first pick in Gibbs and they do so again with the second position the NFL doesn’t seem to value in Round 1. Campbell is a prototypical Dan Campbell player with the kneecap-biter mentality, athleticism and instincts for the position, but it is just rich here.  Grade: D):  https://draftwire.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-draft-live-tracker-instant-grades-analysis/

2023 NFL draft: First round instant grades for all 31 picks (18. Detroit Lions: Jack Campbell, LB, Iowa — The Lions could have had Campbell potentially two rounds later than this. Pretty crazy. Campbell is a quality athlete and may turn out to be a solid starter, but this is a major reach.
