2023 NFL Draft: PFF analysts name their favorite draft prospects (ANTHONY TREASH: EDGE NOLAN SMITH, GEORGIA (Big board rank: 13, Mock draft ADP: 13.5): Smith is closer to being the top edge rusher in this year's class than most people think — the Georgia Bulldog has the flexibility, hand usage and all-around athletic profile to make an impact at the NFL level. He might be undersized and lacking any power element, but the former five-star makes up for it in the run game with teach-tape technique, which is no surprise considering the program he hails from. Given the role Smith played in Georgia's defense, expect him to cook even more at the NFL level when let loose on the edge.) (4-27-23): https://www.pff.com/news/draft-my-guys-pff-favorite-prospects
Lions' 2023 Draft Wants (SECOND ROUND - EDGE Nolan Smith, Georgia: Man, it'd be nice if Smith fell to the Lions at No. 48. He'd be a nice consolation prize for Detroit, if it doesn't land an EDGE rusher earlier in the draft.) (4-27-23): https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/news/lions-2023-draft-wants
2023 NFL Draft: Best research stats from notable prospects (Over the last 10 combines, only three players have weighed 225-plus pounds, ran a 4.40 or faster 40-yard dash, and leap 40-plus inches in the vertical: Saquon Barkley (2018), DK Metcalf (2019), and 2023 projected first-round pick Nolan Smith.) NFL draft preview: Pass rushers will go early, though questions linger (Anderson and Wilson are potential top-three picks, though Wilson’s medical reports could be an issue after he missed the end of last season with a foot injury that required surgery. Wilson has a top the makings of a top run defender given his length as an edge-setter, while Anderson piled up 34½ sacks in his three-year career. Both Anderson and Georgia pass rusher Nolan Smith could be 3-4 linebackers in the NFL, while Wilson, Clemson’s Myles Murphy and Georgia Tech’s Keion White are more traditional big ends and Iowa’s Lukas Van Ness has inside-outside flexibility.) 2023 NFL draft: Interior defensive line still among top needs for Detroit Lions (It’s not a blank slate after those two, though, with Clemson’s Myles Murphy, Georgia’s Nolan Smith and Iowa’s Lukas Van Ness looking like Day 1 locks. Murphy comes from the Travon Walker athletic and physical build. The highly-touted recruit posted three productive seasons for Clemson. Smith is a lightning-fast pass rusher who weighs less than 240 pounds. He’s an absolute bottle rocket, and that ability could have some pass-rushing-minded coaches drooling over ways to deploy him. And Van Ness is built like a truck, winning with power, no matter whether lining up from the inside or outside. Van Ness was an effective pass rusher for two seasons, with some of the best marks against the run at his position in the nation in 2022.) TWENTYMAN: 10 prospects who make sense for Lions in first round (7. EDGE Nolan Smith, Georgia: Smith is an uber athletic edge rusher with the ability to also stand up and play in space. He's got sub-4.4 speed (4.39) and terrific bend which will allow a creative defensive coordinator to use him in a lot of different ways. He's also got some of the highest football character of any prospect in the class.) (4-25-23): https://www.detroitlions.com/news/10-prospects-nfl-draft-lions-first-round-anderson-carter-wilson
The Grit Index: Identifying which NFL Draft prospects are ‘Dan Campbell guys’ (There would have to be some schematic adjustments to the defense if the Lions drafted Nolan Smith, but his combination of athleticism and mindset, make him a very intriguing player at pick No. 18 in the first round—if he’s there. Here is an excerpt from Brugler: “relentless play motor and has unlimited energy on and off the field … a joyful extrovert by nature but also holds everyone accountable (Channing Tindall: “Nolan is the most vocal person in our locker room. … He’s the energy of the defense.”) … has the type of work ethic and team-first mentality that are catnip for coaches (Smith: “It’s not about playing for NIL deals or to go viral. … It’s about playing for the guy next to you and being able to push with him through tough situations.”) … was a regular on kick return and punt return coverages.”) (4-23-23): https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2023/4/24/23695330/detroit-lions-2023-nfl-draft-football-character-fits-prospects-dan-campbell-grit-index
Three-option NFL mock draft: How teams can go in different directions in Round 1 (18. Detroit Lions (Will pick: Nolan Smith, EDGE, Georgia. Should pick: Calijah Kancey, DT, Pitt. Dark horse: Myles Murphy, EDGE, Clemson): The Lions are well-positioned to land a quality cornerback or a top defensive lineman here. They may have a bigger need at tackle than edge, but Smith is the type of high-character guy that Dan Campbell would probably love. Smith was explosive at the NFL Combine and reportedly blew teams away in interviews. He's a bit undersized, but he ran a 4.39 40 and he could thrive playing across from Aidan Hutchinson. Perhaps Kancey, who compares favorably to Aaron Donald, or Murphy, a bigger-bodied edge player, will draw consideration here. As it stands, Smith seems like good value at this juncture.): https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-mock-draft-2023-lions-bijan-robinson-texans-cj-stroud-patriots/oafzne2lewvbdaw07roilaxv
2023 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions 1st round wishlist (Nolan Smith, EDGE, Georgia: It wouldn’t be surprising if Nolan Smith was selected with the 8th overall pick or the 10th overall pick. However, if he somehow made it down to the 18th pick, I could see the Lions being very intrigued with selecting him. At 6-foot-2 and 239 pounds, he’s a bit light, but he’s got a muscular frame. Smith chooses and finds violence. He takes on split-zone blocks well and is a productive pass rusher due to his hands and motor. While he’s coming off a torn pectoral muscle, he’s expected to be a top-15 pick. If he somehow makes it to the 18th pick, I think the Lions will strongly consider adding him to their rotation of pass rushers. With a rotation of Nolan Smith, Josh Paschal, John Cominksy, Aidan Hutchinson and James Houston, the Lions would have a deep group of pass rushers, and it should translate to plenty of success.) 2023 NFL Draft Rankings: Sam Monson's top 10 edge defenders, including Will Anderson, Nolan Smith and Tyree Wilson (TIER 2 - 3. Nolan Smith: Smith is the total package as a player, including excellent run defense, but in addition to being extremely small (6-foot-3 and 240 pounds), he also has a very small sample size of playing time. Smith never played more than 500 snaps in a season and has played just 1,154 snaps over his entire college career in Georgia’s heavy rotation.) Risers, fallers, teams trading up and more draft topics (5. Who is one top prospect you expect to slide the furthest? Edwards: Nolan Smith, EDGE, Georgia -- "There are not many reasonable options for this category. It would not be a surprise if Smith is taken inside the top 10 but if he is not, then it could be a little while before his name is called. A run on offensive tackles and cornerbacks will probably occur after the Eagles at No. 10 overall." 8. Which prospect could fall out of the first round? Wilson: Nolan Smith, EDGE, Georgia -- "Smith has first-round talent all day long. That is indisputable. The issue is that he weighed just 238 at the combine and that's about 10 pounds under what you want an NFL edge rusher to weigh. And for all this athleticism, he's currently better against the run than getting after the QB, and he wasn't asked to do much in coverage at Georgia. That doesn't mean he can't, but teams will be taking this into consideration on draft night.") Top 10 EDGEs in the 2023 NFL Draft: Will Anderson Jr. Sits Atop a Talented Podium (6. Nolan Smith, Georgia: The 2023 NFL Draft EDGE class is dominated by power rushers with hulking builds, but there’s an outcome where Nolan Smith goes on to be the best prospect from the group. Size isn’t a strength of Smith’s at 6’2″, 238 pounds, and sub-33″ arms, but he has the tools to develop into a terror. Smith logged the best 10-yard split of all-time among EDGEs (1.47) and also logged a 4.39 40-yard dash, 41.5″ vertical, and 10’8″ broad jump at the NFL Combine. He’s absurdly explosive and bendy, a banshee in run defense with his size-defying strength and range, and can win around the apex with rips and ankle flexion.) NFL Draft prospects 2023: The top 10 edge pass rushers (4. Nolan Smith, Georgia (6-2, 238 pounds): Smith blew up the Combine to prove he didn't slow down one bit after his major pectoral injury. A look at the former five-star recruits in the 2023 NFL Draft: Bryce Young, Jalen Carter and Will Anderson Jr. top the list (22. EDGE NOLAN SMITH, GEORGIA BULLDOGS (Recruiting ranking: No. 1 overall in class of 2019): As the highest-ranked recruit from 2019, Smith was third in Georgia’s edge defender rotation as a true freshman behind Azeez Ojulari and Malik Herring, playing 287 snaps. He fell to fifth in 2020 as both Ojulari and Herring returned while eventual first-rounder Travon Walker emerged. Smith finally became a starter in his junior season and broke out with a 90.6 run-defense grade that was third among all edge defenders in the country. He was looking to have a similarly successful senior campaign with an 83.8 grade before tearing his pectoral muscle in the eighth game of the season.) The 2023 NFL Draft edge rusher class is strong at both defensive end and outside linebacker (While he has been out of sight since October, Georgia OLB Nolan Smith has not been forgotten. Most polarizing draft prospects: 10 names to debate (Nolan Smith
Georgia · Edge · Senior: Argument for: The Georgia standout was arguably the biggest winner of the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine after showcasing shocking speed (4.39-second 40-yard dash) and explosiveness (41.5-inch vertical jump and 10-foot-8 broad jump) at 238 pounds. Smith's athletic feats complement a versatile game that could enable him to play as a Swiss Army Knife in a hybrid defense designed to create and exploit mismatches. Argument against: Despite possessing an impressive collection of tools, Smith's production does not scream NFL superstar. He teases evaluators with his flashes, but has not produced enough signature moments to cement his status as a consensus blue-chip prospect. Where I stand: Smith's athleticism outweighs his production and potential as a disruptive force. He is best suited for a role as a complementary defender, but his superior athleticism could prompt a team to miscast him as a marquee playmaker on the edges.) 2023 NFL Draft: Trevor Sikkema's top 5 players at each defensive position (2. Nolan Smith: Nolan Smith didn’t get the chance to truly pin his ears back and get after passers as much as a 99th-percentile athlete should, but he comes into the NFL as a stout run defender with a high ceiling if he can master some of those speed-rush moves.) 2023 NFL Draft: The top 8 edge defenders (5. Nolan Smith, Georgia (Height: 6′ 2⅛” (15th percentile), Weight: 238 (2nd), 40-Yard Dash: 4.39 (99nd), 10-Yard Split: 1.52 (99th), Vertical Jump: 41½” (98th), Broad Jump: 128″ (95th), Arm Length: 32⅝” (17th), Hand Size: 9″ (5th)) - Bio: Smith was a consensus five-star recruit out of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, and he was Georgia’s co-winner of the Defensive Newcomer of the Year Award in 2019. Over four seasons with the Bulldogs (his 2022 campaign ended after eight games due to a torn pectoral muscle), Smith totaled 17 sacks, 16 quarterback hits, 51 quarterback hurries, one batted pass, 65 tackles, 65 stops, and one interception on 14 targets. Smith had 1,068 snaps outside the tackles, 28 in the slot, 23 in the box, 16 at cornerback, 15 over the tackles, and 10 in the B-gaps. Stat to Know: In his abbreviated 2022 season, Smith had two sacks and 19 total pressures… in just 102 pass-rushing snaps. Strengths: Smith’s speed off the snap is real, and it is spectacular. Those historic 40-yard and 10-yard times at the combine show up on the field. Whether he’s chasing quarterbacks outside the pocket to futile results… …or embarrassing enemy blockers with ridiculous inside counters and multi-gap switches (the stanky leg move here is just preposterous)… …he’s a constant problem with that functional speed. Smith also has great bend and lean around the edge, which just accentuate his inside moves. Weaknesses: While Smith occasionally shows more strength and power for his size than you’d expect, it’s not his alpha trait — he can be easily enveloped if his speed isn’t first-featured. Conclusion: You can set the injury aside when evaluating Smith’s NFL potential; he showed as much as he needed to at the combine from a recovery sense. The question is, will all NFL teams value him in the same way when it comes to his size? His speed and athleticism are such valuable assets, the last thing you want to do is to beef him up to 260 and lose that. As an “edgebacker” in any of the five-man fronts the NFL is working with more frequently these days, Smith has all the tools you’d want. Just keep him on the edge, let him be freaky, and he’ll help to define your defense. NFL Comparison: Haason Reddick. The Cardinals selected the 6-foot-1, 240-pound Reddick out of Temple with the 13th pick in the 2017 draft, tried to make him an off-ball linebacker for whatever reason, and finally reaped the benefits of his skill set when they made him a true edge-rusher in 2020. With the Panthers in 2021, and especially with the Eagles in 2022, when he amassed 21 sacks and 87 total pressures, Reddick has been one of the most consistently productive outside rushers in the NFL in recent years. Hopefully, Smith’s NFL team will take the latter Reddick plan, and will just let him work his athletic magic where he’s best-suited.) 4 prospects who are difficult evaluations for the 2023 NFL draft (Nolan Smith, EDGE, Georgia: Evaluating Smith was the impetus for this entire article. In a quick film review for my scouting profile on Smith at Lions Wire, I saw more things that gave me pause on making him a top-20 talent in the class. To make the long story short, Smith is a power-oriented run defense specialist in the undersized body of a speedy stand-up pass rusher. His game reminds me more than a little of Barkevious Mingo when he came out of LSU as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft. But Smith is some 20 pounds lighter, two inches shorter and significantly less productive in college; Mingo had more sacks in his sophomore season (15) than Smith accumulated in 38 career games at Georgia. I’m unsure how a player of Smith’s size (or lack thereof) can manage being a power-to-speed EDGE against better blocking and more advanced schemes in the NFL. Yet he’s really skilled at what he does; Smith understands his limitations well and has the trump card of being an insanely fast and explosive athlete. If the NFL team that drafts Smith can unlock his athletic potential, it’s easy to envision him being a much better, more productive version of Mingo at the next level.) Evaluating the size outliers in the 2023 NFL Draft (ED: NOLAN SMITH, GEORGIA - At 6-foot-2 and 238 pounds, Smith is likely to be the lightest edge-rusher drafted in the first round since Haason Reddick in 2017 (237 pounds). The last one before that? Florida edge defender Huey Richardson, who was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 15th pick in 1991. Smtih ran the fastest (4.39-second 40-yard dash with a 1.47-second 10-yard split) and jumped the highest (41.5-inch vertical) of any edge-rusher in attendance. Those are high-end numbers for a cornerback, let alone someone that rushes the passer. He’s coming off a torn pec, which clouds his evaluation, but you saw a level of physicality from Smith on tape (82.4 and 90.6 run-defense grades over the past two seasons) that make me not worried one bit about his size.) 2023 NFL Draft: Pro comparisons and analytical team fits for top edge-rushing prospects (Nolan Smith
Georgia · Senior (PRO COMPARISON: Haason Reddick): Prior to suffering a season-ending pec injury in late October, Smith generated a 17.7 percent pressure rate in 2022, ranking fourth in the SEC by PFF's count. He also posted the highest pass-rush win percentage (23.5 percent). Oh, and did I mention that his 2021 production was even better? The Eagles really unlocked Reddick this past season, allowing the former No. 13 overall pick of the Cardinals to record a career-high 16 sacks and make his first Pro Bowl. I envision Smith's future NFL team following the same kind of blueprint when it comes to deploying a smaller -- but highly explosive -- edge rusher. TEAM FIT: Tennessee Titans. The Titans are in the middle of a pretty major overhaul this offseason, which has created space for rookies to contribute on Day 1 -- especially in the role vacated by Bud Dupree's release. I think Smith can execute the fronts and concepts head coach Mike Vrabel likes to dial up.) 2023 NFL Draft edge rusher prospect rankings, scouting reports: Will Anderson leads deep group (5. Nolan Smith, Georgia, 6-2, 238, Senior - Overview: Of all the stars at Georgia, no one signed with greater fanfare as a recruit than Smith, who came to the Bulldogs as the No. 1 overall-rated prospect out of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He has since been celebrated for his exploits on and off the field (he's a mathematics major and a multi-year captain) and that duality is also evident on the field, where he's starred along the defensive line as well as linebacker. Smith was named Georgia's Co-Defensive Newcomer of the Year back in 2019, playing in all 14 games and finishing with 18 tackles and 2.5 sacks (along with 18 QB hurries). He posted another 22 stops a year later with another 20 quarterback pressures before enjoying the finest statistical season of his career in 2021, helping the Bulldogs win a national championship with 56 tackles in 14 starts, including nine for loss, 3.5 sacks and 27 QB hurries. He was dominant against in the playoff win over Michigan, collecting a team-high eight tackles and setting a career-high with seven QB pressures. Smith tore his pectoral muscle midway through this past season, finishing with just 18 tackles but another 16 QB hurries, which led the team at the time. Areas of Strength: Pound for pound, Smith might just be the grittiest, most physical player on this list. He was asked to play a ton of roles for the Bulldogs and performed them all incredibly well, providing his future NFL team all sorts of possibilities, including as a potential off-ball linebacker, where he's shown instincts, excellent change of direction skills and explosive tackling power. He is a considerably better pass rusher than his 12.5 career sacks (over 38 games) would suggest. When he wants, Smith shows an explosive burst upfield, and he has the core flexibility to flatten out and change direction in a blink, presenting a very difficult challenge to pass-blockers. He punches above his weight class, showing remarkable power to hold up at the point of attack for a player of his size, as well as an understanding of leverage and angles to consistently beat the man in front of him. Given all of his hype, Smith plays like a walk-on, doing all of the little things right, which will make him popular with coaches, as well as the scouts drooling over the measured athleticism he showed at the Combine, including a 4.39 second 40-yard dash and 41.5" vertical jump which testify to his rare explosiveness. Areas of Concern: Smith is severely undersized for an edge rusher, relying on his technique and toughness to hold up. He was credited with a lot of QB pressures at Georgia, but didn't finish as many as you'd like for such an athletic, instinctive player. Slips and dips with the best of them, but when blockers are able to latch on, Smith struggles to disengage and make the play himself, instead falling back on creating a pile. He was also surrounded by so much talent at Georgia that he typically only had to beat one blocker. Bottom Line: Smith was one of my favorite studies of this class as he is not at all what you'd expect based on his size and workout numbers. While those numbers may suggest a speed rusher, his game is actually more about power and toughness, and he was more productive against the run than the pass at Georgia. Smith personifies that old Mark Twain line that "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog," which is why I'm confident this Dawg will live up to lofty expectations in the NFL. 2023 NFL Draft's best at everything: Top defensive line performers in 10 distinct categories (BEST GET-OFF - EDGE: Nolan Smith, Georgia: You're tripping if you thought any edge defender other than Smith would win the “best get-off” after he posted a superhero-esque 1.52-second 10-yard split at the NFL Combine. And while combine athletic testing doesn't always translate to the field, it certainly does with Smith, whose get-off and upfield burst enable him to immediately stress an offensive tackle's quickness and range in pass protection. Smith's pass-rush tool kit still needs refinement, but he has all the physical characteristics, in addition to the foundational technical aptitude, to develop into a pass rusher who is a threat to produce double-digit sacks each season.) How every five-star recruit in the 2019 class has graded so far in their career (1. EDGE NOLAN SMITH, GEORGIA BULLDOGS (Career College Grade: 85.9 (1,154 snaps), Career NFL Grade: N/A): Smith was third in Georgia’s edge defender rotation as a true freshman, behind Azeez Ojulari and Malik Herring, and played 287 snaps. He fell to fifth in 2020, as both Ojulari and Herring returned while eventual first-rounders Travon Walker and Jermaine Johnson II emerged. Smith finally became a starter in his junior season and broke out with a 90.6 run-defense grade that ranked third among all edge defenders in college football. He then put up an 83.8 grade in his senior campaign before tearing his pectoral muscle in the eighth game of the season. NFL Draft 2023: Fowler’s Top 10 EDGE Big Board (3. Nolan Smith, Georgia: One of the top run defenders in the draft class, if Smith is able to fine-tune his pass-rush repertoire, look out. 2023 NFL Draft: 3 alternate players the Lions could draft at 6th overall (Nolan Smith, EDGE, Georgia: Many fans in Detroit want Jalen Carter out of Georgia and I can’t blame them. On the field, he’s one of the best players in the 2023 NFL Draft, if not, the best player. That said, you do have to worry about everything that’s happening off the field for him. So Detroit, please keep in mind that he could be off their board. By the time we get to the 6th overall pick, there could be a chance that we see Tyree Wilson and Will Anderson off the board. One could be selected by Arizona and the other by Seattle. Certainly the Lions could go and grab Myles Murphy from Clemson but what about Nolan Smith from Georgia? Similar to what we discussed above on Peter Skoronski, it feels like Nolan Smith fits what is being built in Detroit. Smith is a violent football player regardless of size and he’ll matchup against anyone. He doesn’t care about being David while matching up against Goliath. He loves contact and is looking to punish the opposition. On the field, Smith displays great versatility and is able to align in a variety of spots from a stand-up 7-technique or he could even cover the slot (8 snaps per PFF). Most likely to stand-up as a pass-rusher, you can send Smith after the quarterback or he could drop into the flats to stop the pass. By far, my favorite thing he does on the field is how he attacks blocks. There could be a split-zone block coming right at him and he’ll blow the block up while helping his teammates on the tackle. Some could even say that nobody did more for their draft stock at the Scouting Combine than Nolan Smith. I would certainly agree with that statement. Smith is 6-foot-2 and 238 pounds with 32 5/8″ arms. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds and had a 41.5″ vertical. Despite only playing 8 games last season due to a torn pectoral muscle, it seems likely that he’ll be a top-15 pick in April. If the Lions top players start to fall off the board, they could certainly consider a player such as Smith with the 6th overall pick.) It may not be terribly surprising that the edge who runs a 4.39-second 40 with a 41.5-inch vertical and 10-foot-8 broad jump has an elite get-off. Flip on the tape, and it matched those testing numbers from Indy. He is the best pure speed-rushing prospect in this class and can be an impact run defender as well with his get-off despite being undersized (238 pounds).) Pro Day News and Rumors: Jalen Carter Falls While Nolan Smith and John Michael Schmitz Rise (Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers, defensive line coaches from the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, and the majority of the Atlanta Falcons front office were among some of the onlookers at Georgia’s Pro Day. Nolan Smith participated in a few position drills after his insane Combine workout. He was held out of bag drills as a precautionary measure, as Smith missed significant playing time last season with a torn pectoral muscle. He looked good in coverage drills, displaying speed and fluidity as he moved around the field.) Georgia Pro Day 2023 News, Rumors: Will Jalen Carter Be in Attendance? (Nolan Smith, EDGE - Don’t expect Nolan Smith to do much, if any, testing at the Georgia Pro Day. The former five-star recruit blew onlookers away at the NFL Combine, logging a 4.39 40-yard dash, a 41.5″ vertical, and a 10’8″ broad jump at 6’2″, 238 pounds. He also put up a 1.52 10-yard split — the best figure among edge rushers. Smith could partake in agility drills, but at this point, we know he’s a freak athlete. It’ll be more illuminating to watch and see if coaches have him take part in linebacker drills, moving in space. He has undeniable pass-rush upside, but the projected versatility that comes with his athleticism is just as exciting.) NFL scouting combine winners and losers by the numbers: Defense (WINNER: FORMER NO. 1 RECRUITS. After somewhat disappointing careers marred by injuries, a pair of former No. 1 overall recruits reminded everyone at the combine why they were thought of so highly coming out of high school. Georgia edge defender Nolan Smith was the top recruit in the 2019 class and tested like a wide receiver in Indianapolis. At 238 pounds, he ran a ridiculous 4.39-second 40-yard dash. That’s the second-fastest time ever recorded by a defensive lineman at the combine. Smith’s 41.5-inch vertical was also tied for third all-time among defensive linemen.) Biggest winners from the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine (EDGE Nolan Smith, Georgia - Despite coming into the combine as one of the top edge rushers in this year’s class, Smith drew some pause when he came in at 238 pounds. However, it wasn’t long after when Smith silenced those in question when he took the field to test. Smith jumped out of the gym, posting a 41.5″ vertical and 10’8″ broad. Soon after, he zoomed down the turf, finishing with a blazing 4.39-second 40-yard dash. His size shouldn’t be a concern, and when you turn on his tape, there are plenty of explosive plays, like what he displayed on Thursday.) 2023 NFL Draft Stock - Combine (Nolan Smith, DE, Georgia: Smith has gotten a lot of media hype, but he never had a season of production in college that justified the lofty projections. Smith's best season came in 2021, when he had 3.5 sacks and 55 tackles. The 6-foot-2, 238-pound Smith had an electric 40 with a eye-popping time of 4.39 seconds. He is undersized to be a NFL edge defender, but his fast 40 shows the pure speed he has off the edge. Smith's combine could help make him a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft despite his lack of production in college.) (3-7-23): https://walterfootball.com/draft2023stock_25.php
NFL Draft Prospects 2023: Biggest Risers, Fallers After NFL Combine Include Zack Kuntz, Deonte Banks (Biggest Risers From the NFL Combine - Nolan Smith, EDGE, Georgia: There will be varying opinions about Nolan Smith‘s stock, especially taking into account his below-average size. But there’s officially no denying that Smith is as explosive as they come off the edge. Smith ran a 4.39 40-yard dash with an absurd 1.52 10-yard split, and also had a 41.5″ vertical. With those numbers, he may have punched his ticket into Round 1.) (3-6-23): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-combine-risers-fallers-monday-2023/
Quarterbacks take center stage at NFL combine, plus big men record blazing times in 40-yard dash (Nolan Smith shows off blazing speed. It's not often you see a defensive end go under 4.4 in the 40, but that's exactly what Smith did. The former UGA star ran a 4.39, which gave him the second-fastest time of any defensive lineman since 2003. To put into perspective how fast this is, Smith beat out the 40 times for Saquon Barkley (4.4 in 2018) Stefon Diggs (4.46 in 2013) and DeAndre Hopkins (4.57 in 2015). For more on Smith's performance, be sure to head here (He also had the best vertical jump and third-best broad jump in his position group).) NFL Draft Prospects 2023: Day 3 Winners Include Nolan Smith, Adetomiwa Adebawore (Thursday Winners at the NFL Combine. Nolan Smith, EDGE | Georgia - The least surprising top performer of the day was Georgia’s Nolan Smith. Smith was a five-star recruit out of high school, with a documented 40-yard dash in the 4.4 range and a vertical jump over 40″. All he did was confirm the rare traits he possesses on Thursday. At 6’2″, 238 pounds, Smith ran the fastest 40-yard dash of the day at 4.39, with a lightning-quick 1.52 10-yard split. He also added a soaring 41.5″ vertical for good measure, and a 10’8″ broad jump. Smith’s profile still carries some uncertainty with his weight and sub-33″ arms. But if you’re a team that values athleticism to mold, he brings it to the highest degree, and he crushed interviews, too.) 2023 NFL Combine Risers: Byron Young, Owen Pappoe, and Lukas Van Ness Perform Well (Nolan Smith, EDGE/LB | Georgia: Nolan Smith’s marks were off the charts and included 4.39 seconds in the 40 (1.52-second 10-yard split), 41.5″ in the vertical jump, and 10’8″ in the broad jump. Probably half the defensive backs at the Combine won’t match those marks on Friday. Smith did not participate in the position drills, but he really didn’t need to. The 2021 game film proves he’s a three-down defender who can play the run, cover the pass, or blitz the quarterback.) Combine Confidential: The Need For Speed (The biggest show-stopper by far has been Georgia linebacker Nolan Smith [6021 | 238 | 0900 | 3258], who registered an eye-popping 4.39 forty-yard dash (1.52 ten-yard split), along with a 41.5” vertical jump and 10-foot-8 broad jump. These testing numbers combined with his film, which highlights his twitchy bend on the edge, would appear to make Smith a lock for the top half of the first round. Coming off a torn pectoral injury, he will wait for his pro day to do positional drills but it was a great reminder for NFL evaluators just how fast and explosive he truly is.) TWENTYMAN: Combine Day 3 observations (Terrific athlete: Georgia edge rusher Nolan Smith had himself a day at the Combine Thursday. He is atop the list all-time in Combine history for the heaviest players with a vertical of 40-plus inches (41.5) and a sub-4.4 second 40-yard dash (4.39). At 239 pounds, Smith topped Seattle wide receiver DK Metcalf (40.5 & 4.33) at 228 pounds and Jets running back Breece Hall (40.0 & 4.39) at 217 pounds.) 2023 NFL Scouting Combine: What We Learned during Thursday's activities in Indianapolis (1. A truly EXPLOSIVE edge. There might be questions about Georgia edge Nolan Smith's size entering the NFL, but every athletic question imaginable was answered Thursday at the NFL Scouting Combine. Smith, who checked in at 6-foot-2 and 238 pounds, made up for his lack of mass with some eye-popping numbers in the on-field workout. The most alluring figure came in the 40-yard dash, where the versatile defender blazed the track with an official time of 4.39 seconds. But that wasn't Smith's only explosive mark on the day, as he also soared 41.5 inches in the vertical leap and 10-foot-8 in the broad jump. Just extraordinary twitchiness for an edge defender. A number of undersized rushers have thrived in the NFL in recent years, including the Eagles' Haason Reddick and the Patriots' Josh Uche, so perhaps the size-related concerns with Smith might be overblown following his banner workout in Indy. -- Eric Edholm) (3-2-23): https://www.nfl.com/news/2023-nfl-scouting-combine-what-we-learned-during-thursday-s-activities-in-indian

Nolan Smith may have measured in on the lighter side at 6-foot-2 and 238 pounds, but he made up for it with some wild testing numbers. His 4.39-second 40-yard dash and 1.52-second 10-yard split both place in the 99th percentile for edge rushers at the combine since 1999. His 41.5-inch vertical jump was the best among the group, also in the 98th percentile, and his 128-inch broad jump placed in the 95th percentile. As a former No. 1 overall recruit for his athletic potential, it’s safe to say he’s living up to it. It’s hard to imagine he’ll get out of the top 15 in the 2023 NFL Draft now.) 2023 NFL combine: Nolan Smith, Lukas Van Ness among winners and losers in defensive lineman, linebacker groups (Winners - Nolan Smith, EDGE, Georgia: Smith missed a good portion of the season due to injury, but made up for lost time Thursday. Smith, who used every moment in front of the camera to boast about the Georgia program, ran 4.39 seconds in the 40-yard dash and an incredible 1.52 second 10-yard split. The former five-star recruit posted a benchmark 41.5 inch vertical jump. The combine is used to either verify what was seen on film or send scouts back to the tape. Smith verified was he had shown over the course of his career. He is a thinner edge rusher with the speed and quick twitch nature to be effective rushing the quarterback.) 2023 NFL Combine Winners Day 1: Blazing-fast DTs give the Bears plenty to consider (4. EDGE Nolan Smith, Georgia: Smith has a borderline first round pedigree, but also had several factors working against him. His playing weight of 232 pounds was slight for an NFL edge rusher. His place in a stacked Georgia defense meant fewer chances to rack up attention-grabbing stats. Then a torn pectoral muscle ended his 2022 season after only eight games. That left a prospect whose main selling point was his athletic potential. He put it on full display in Indianapolis. Smith weighed in at a manageable 238 pounds but that modest increase in bulk failed to dent his speed or explosiveness. His 41.5-inch vertical leap was Thursday’s high score. His 4.39 second 40 time stood atop the defensive ends and edge rushers Thursday. Despite that, Smith wasn’t happy with his performance when his unofficial time clocked in at .05 seconds higher. He’d later say he considered himself running at “about 85 percent.”) (3-2-23): https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-combine-winners-2023-day-1-bryan-bresee-calijah-kancey
2023 NFL Combine Stock Report - Linebackers (Up - Nolan Smith, DE, Georgia: It's not common for an edge rusher to be disappointed with a 4.39 40-yard dash, yet that was Nolan Smith's demeanor after he ran in Indianapolis. Smith didn't even run a second time. Despite this reaction, Smith deserves an up arrow for showing off his elite athletic ability. Evaluators will love his 1.52 10-yard split as well.) 5 Takeaways from Day 1 of 2023 NFL Combine (Injuries haven’t slowed Georgia’s Nolan Smith - Smith entered the combine with something to prove. After suffering a torn pec that cost him the final seven games of Georgia’s season, the combine offered him his first chance to perform on the field since the injury. The Georgia product showed out, excelling in a number of the different workouts. Known for being a superb athlete, he turned heads with a 4.39 40-yard dash and a 41.5” vertical jump. Both numbers were the best of any participant Thursday. Additionally, he produced a 10’8” broad jump. That mark placed fourth, with Tennessee’s Byron Young leading the field with a jump of 11-feet even. Though the injury took him out of game action on Oct. 29, it’s clear that Smith hasn’t lost a step as a result of his time on the sideline.) 2023 NFL Scouting Combine: Quotes, highlights from defensive linemen and linebackers at the podium (EDGE NOLAN SMITH, GEORGIA: No player was more passionate at the podiums Wednesday than Smith, and that checks out with his reputation as a relentless worker and leader of the Georgia defense over the past two seasons. Smith started his session by announcing he would be running the 40-yard dash as well as jumping the vertical and broad despite recovering from a pectoral injury that prematurely ended his 2022 season. The reason for wanting to still get out there this week was to prove his mantra: “hard work works.” Smith is listed at 6-foot-3 and 235 pounds, and yet he still finished the 2022 season with an 82.6 run-defense grade. In the clip above, he was asked about his mentality for defending the run, and you could hear the passion he has for the “dirty work” of playing the position. Smith was a former No. 1 overall recruit for his athleticism, so we’re excited to see how he tests on the field. But even before those numbers, he’s already having a great week in Indy from his podium presence — something NFL teams will surely gravitate toward.) 2023 NFL Draft: One prospect at every position with the most to gain at the NFL Scouting Combine (EDGE DEFENDER: NOLAN SMITH, GEORGIA BULLDOGS - The second-straight former No. 1 overall recruit on this list, Smith led all high school recruits in 2019 in On3's consensus rating. Like Bresee, Smith was never fully unlocked at Georgia, as the Bulldogs’ scheme forced him to focus more on the run game than rushing the passer. Also like Bresee, Smith battled injuries, as a torn pec ended his season in October. Georgia vs. TCU 2023 NFL Draft Prospects To Watch in College Football Playoff National Championship (Nolan Smith, LB, Georgia: Entering the season, I graded Nolan Smith as a surefire first-rounder. 2023 NFL Draft: Ranking the top 10 edge defender prospects (5. NOLAN SMITH, GEORGIA (SENIOR | 6-3, 235) (2022 Grade: 83.7, Play Style: Athlete, Initial Round Projection: 1st): Smith may be undersized, but don’t call him a third-down specialist. The 235-pounder pours effort into the run game and has earned a 91.3 grade in that regard since the start of 2021. Smith plays with the kind of requisite violence to disengage from blocks in the run game and make plays. Where he really shines, though, is in space where he can shut down option runs and track down ball carriers in space with relative ease. Smith was the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2019 class, and while he may not have lived up to those lofty expectations entirely, his tape is repeated evidence of that pedigree. His get-off is imposing, and he’s still adding tools to his pass-rushing toolbox.) (12-26-22): https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2023-nfl-draft-top-10-edge-rankings

At that size, he’s also one hell of a run defender, which should come as no surprise if you follow the ethos of Georgia football. He earned run-defense grades of 82.4 and 90.6 over the past two seasons.) (12-13-22): https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2023-nfl-draft-ranking-class-top-30-senior-prospects

2023 NFL Draft Stock - Week 9 (Stock Down - Nolan Smith, DE, Georgia: There was a lot of hype that Smith was poised for a massive 2022 season after Georgia lost a lot of defensive line talent to the 2022 NFL Draft. However, Smith has been quiet mostly this year, recording just 16 tackles and three sacks so far, despite taking on a bigger role. Smith (6-3, 235) is undersized for the NFL as an edge rusher, and he could have problems holding up taking on NFL offensive linemen who are going to outweigh him on average by 70-90 pounds. The mass issue was only aggravated last Saturday when he was knocked out of the game against Florida with a shoulder injury. Smith does not look like a first-round talent for the 2023 NFL Draft, unlike some of the other Georgia linemen.) (11-1-22): https://walterfootball.com/draft2023stock_09.php
Top 2023 NFL Draft Prospects: Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud Heads a Talented Class (40. Nolan Smith, EDGE, Georgia: With Georgia’s top pass rushers from last year departing the program, much was expected of Nolan Smith heading into the season. Although there will be reservations about his size as it pertains to his NFL projection — Smith is on the smaller size at 6’3″, 235 pounds — the Bulldogs’ EDGE possesses impressive strength that he uses to overpower offensive linemen. Furthermore, he showcases the bend capacity and high-level athleticism to win with speed off the edge at the NFL level.) (10-27-22): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2023-nfl-draft-prospects/
2023 NFL Draft: Top 25 Senior Bowl prospects entering Week 9 of college football season (8. Nolan Smith, Edge, Georgia (6-3, 235) (Previous rank: No. 7) - First-half takeaway: Smith leads a stingy Bulldogs defense with six tackles for loss and three sacks halfway through the season. His strength on contact allows him to put opposing linemen on skates, and his violent hands and speed help him turn the corner. Smith plays well off the ball, too, because of his quickness, toughness against lineman blocks and diagnostic skills. Second-half matchup to watch: Nov. 5 vs. Tennessee. Smith has a relatively slight frame for an NFL edge rusher, so his draft stock would benefit from consistently beating Tennessee's strong tackles with speed and power to sack Hendon Hooker (and limit his scrambles) when Georgia faces off with Tennessee for a de facto SEC East title game.) NFL Draft News and Rumors Mailbag: Jalin Hyatt’s Draft Stock, Aidan O’Connell’s Immediate Impact (Q: Tony, who are the best linebackers in the 2023 class? It depends on what kind of linebacker you are looking for or referring to. Despite not putting up big numbers this season, I believe Nolan Smith is the most complete linebacker in the nation. Ditto Will Anderson Jr., who’s having a disappointing season but would be the best edge rushing linebacker.) 2023 NFL Draft: Top 25 Senior Bowl prospects entering Week 7 of college football season (7. Nolan Smith, Edge, Georgia (6-3, 235) (Previous rank: No. 6) - What I saw: Smith had four stops in the Bulldogs' narrow win over Missouri on Oct. 1, winning with violent hands to record three stops on run plays within a yard of the line of scrimmage. Missouri quarterback Brady Cook stiff-armed Smith on a bootleg in the first half, but Smith bounced back to corral Cook outside for a third-quarter sack. He regularly out-quicked Auburn's tackles in the home victory last weekend. While Smith was unable to sack athletic Auburn quarterback Robby Ashford, he did stop one second-half run cold in the backfield and also came off a block to stop a fake punt in the first quarter. What's next: I suspect Vanderbilt will appear outmanned at Sanford Stadium on Saturday, allowing Smith and Co. to enjoy their ensuing Week 8 bye before the stretch run.) College football Week 6 live reactions, results, and takeaways (Nolan Smith shows his NFL appeal as Georgia dominates. 6:00PM- Georgia is predictably handling Auburn, up 21-3 as the third quarter slowly winds to a close. And one standout among many has been Bulldogs outside linebacker Nolan Smith. There’s been a lot of discussion regarding Smith’s NFL projection. He’s a former five-star recruit with elite athleticism. But he’s also in the 6’3″, 230-pound range — a bit too small and lean to hold up in a full-time EDGE role. Nevertheless, in a 3-4 OLB alignment, Smith brings a lot to offer. On a recent third-down stop, Smith flowed through blocks on the outside of the line, perfectly read an option play in the backfield, and matched the ball carrier with swift short-area twitch, wrapping him up for a crucial loss. Smith’s instincts and gravity to plays in pursuit, combined with his surprising play strength, makes him a dangerous overhang defender on the line. 2023 NFL Draft: Top 25 Senior Bowl prospects entering Week 5 of college football season (6. Nolan Smith, Edge, Georgia (6-3, 235) (Previous rank: No. 6) - What I saw: Smith shed blocks and took on pulling linemen in the Bulldogs' Sept. 17 win over South Carolina, and yet still looked quick beating blockers inside. Reading him on RPOs was difficult because he stays home and can jump inside to make the stop. Smith's two tackles last week against pesky Kent State included a sack. He blew by the left tackle on the play, displaying quick, violent hands. He translated his KSU film study onto the field by attacking the mesh point on run plays to force a quick decision by the quarterback and jumping outside to defend a trips alignment on his side. What's next: Smith will impress scouts over the next couple of weeks if he can win off the edge consistently against Missouri left tackle Javon Foster and Auburn's senior bookend tackles Kilian Zierer and Austin Troxell.) 2023 NFL Draft Board: Top prospect battles to watch in Week 5 (Missouri OT Javon Foster vs. Georgia EDGE Nolan Smith. On the other side of the Georgia-Missouri matchup, there’s another battle to watch in the trenches. Assuming that Missouri will be playing from behind for most of this game and thus passing the ball more often, this will be a great test for both players. Javon Foster has the tools of an NFL tackle. He’s long and wide but also flashes good athleticism and can absorb rushes with his torso flexibility. Nolan Smith still hasn’t quite found his stride as a pass rusher. He has the athleticism, but he’ll need more rushing nuance against a monolith like Foster.) (10-1-22): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2023-nfl-draft-board-top-prospect-battles-to-watch-in-week-5/
2023 NFL Draft: Top 25 Senior Bowl prospects entering Week 3 of college football season (6. Nolan Smith, Edge, Georgia (6-3, 235) (Previous rank: No. 7): Georgia regularly rotated defensive linemen during its defeat of Oregon in the opener, so Smith only posted two tackles in three quarters. He flashed a quick first step off the line when in full pass-rush mode, forcing a throwaway by QB Bo Nix in the third quarter. Smith won inside regularly versus the right tackle in the run game, placing himself in the backfield to stop runners before they got started. He was physical against the Ducks' linemen and tight ends throughout the contest despite his relatively lean build. Smith played limited snaps in the Bulldogs' one-sided affair against Samford last week, earning a tackle for loss by shedding a tight end to stop a quarterback run late in the first half.) 2023 NFL Draft: Top 25 Senior Bowl prospects entering Week 1 of college football season (7. Nolan Smith, Edge, Georgia (6-3, 235): I think Smith is a more fluid athlete than former teammate Azeez Ojulari, a second-round pick of the Giants in 2021. Smith's agility and bend to turn the corner is outstanding and he drops quickly into coverage to enter passing lanes. Smith also brings heavy hands against much bigger SEC tackles.) SEC 2023 NFL Draft prospects and scouting reports include Bryce Young, Will Levis (Nolan Smith, EDGE | Grade: 4.01 | Projected Round: 1. With his three linebacker compatriots drafted in the top 100 picks, Nolan Smith is now the man who leads the unit, and his 2021 tape is off the charts. Smith displayed himself as a forceful blitzer, a terrific athlete, and generally a three-down player at the position. He gets great depth on pass drops, displays terrific speed in pursuit, and has a complete game. Add in outstanding size and speed, and there’s not much you can’t like about Smith. Scouts from the southeast I’ve spoken with give Smith a late Day 2 grade, but I disagree. Based on last season, he’s presently a first-round prospect on my board.) Top Georgia Bulldog Prospects to Watch in 2023 NFL Draft (OLB Nolan Smith
Nolan Smith: It was a surprise when Smith returned for his senior year. The former No. 1 recruit had an excellent season in 2021. He will test off the charts, and that athleticism shows up on the field. At the next level, Smith will have some versatility. He has the tools to be a weakside outside linebacker, and he is a good pass rusher. Smith's length and lack of size are concerning for him to be used as a consistent rusher, which may hurt his upside in the draft. Smith is currently more of a second-round player.) Early 2023 NFL Draft EDGE Rankings: Alabama's Will Anderson Jr. headlines the group (5. NOLAN SMITH, GEORGIA (SENIOR): The former No. 1 overall recruit in the 2019 class, Smith plays with a jet pack strapped to his back. He can close on ball-carriers in space as well as any other edge defender in the draft class. Why, though, with insane athleticism and his recruiting background did he not declare after the 2021 season? It comes back to his pass-rushing moves — or lack thereof. He doesn’t play with nearly the same violence rushing the passer as he does setting the edge in the run game. His 79.1 pass-rushing grade last season wasn’t going to get many NFL teams excited about drafting an undersized edge rusher (6-foot-3, 235 pounds) early. Smith needs to come back in 2022 with a more refined pass-rushing plan and, hopefully, some added weight. If he does that, there’s no reason he can’t be a first-rounder.) Georgia’s 2023 NFL Draft prospects led by Jalen Carter, Kelee Ringo (Nolan Smith, EDGE: Another part of the dominant 2021 Georgia defense, Nolan Smith opted to return for the upcoming college football season. As a result, he positions himself as one of the top EDGE prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft class. Smith possesses great explosiveness, bend ability, and deceptive strength for his size. At 6’3″ and 235 pounds, that size may be a factor in Smith’s evaluation, and there are some technical improvements to make to unlock his full potential.) Edge defenders to watch for the 2023 NFL draft (Nolan Smith, Georgia: Perhaps this is the best place to start with Nolan Smith. That Smith is viewed in such high regard should not be a surprise. Coming out of IMG Academy, Smith was a five-star recruit and graded as the top player in the nation for 247Sports in the 2019 recruiting cycle, and immediately saw the field for the Bulldogs. He played in all 14 games for Georgia in the 2019 season, recording 18 total tackles, 15 quarterback pressures and 2.5 sacks. During the 2020 season, Smith saw his first starting action for Georgia. He played in all ten of the Bulldogs’ games, recording 22 total tackles, 20 quarterback pressures, and another 2.5 sacks. This past season, Smith was part of one of the nation’s best defenses, a unit that saw five players go in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft. Smith recorded career-high numbers in total tackles (53), tackles for a loss (8) and sacks (4.5). With the talent that has left for the NFL, Smith is expected to take on a bigger role in 2022. If he builds on his first three years on campus, he will live up to some of these preseason expectations.) 2023 NFL Draft Watch List: Defense (Nolan Smith, Georgia: Smith was the top overall recruit in the 2019 class because of his — and stop me if you’ve heard this before about a Georgia defender — elite athleticism. At 6-foot-3 and 235 pounds, he is a lightning rod off the edge. He made massive strides as a true junior last season but would likely have still been on the outside looking in on the first round had he declared. He has top-10 tools and could play his way into that conversation with a better season as a pass-rusher in 2022.) (5-9-22): https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2023-nfl-draft-watch-list-defense
2023 NFL draft prospects to watch: 10 quarterbacks, 10 non-QBs we like early on (EDGE Nolan Smith, Georgia: Oh, you thought Georgia’s talent well had dried up? Spoiler: No. Smith was Rivals’ No. 2 overall recruit in the Class of 2019, behind only Derek Stingley Jr. that year. Now he’s stepping up into a primary role for the Dawgs and should be a household name in no time. Smith really shined in the two playoff games, as he was too good to take off the field despite all the talent in Athens. He’s not massive, but the elite athletic traits are nearly impossible to miss.)
