NFL midseason report: Every team from every angle, plus keys to the second half (Detroit Lions - FPI rank: 5, Chances to make the playoffs: 70.0%, Chances to win their division: 36.4%.  First-half storyline: At 5-2 entering the bye week, the Lions were undefeated at home (3-0), winning each game at Ford Field by 15 or more points, but head coach Dan Campbell still believed they weren't playing their "best ball yet collectively in all three phases," as they continued to adjust to first-year offensive coordinator John Morton and defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard.  QB stat to know: Lions QB Jared Goff is the third quarterback in NFL history to accumulate at least 17 touchdown passes, a 73.0% completion percentage and a passer rating of 115.0 through the first eight games, joining Drew Brees (2018) and Tom Brady (2007). Goff has also thrown a touchdown in 14 consecutive games and for the 15th straight game against divisional opponents following Sunday's loss to Minnesota.  Second-half storyline: Campbell and the Lions are eyeing a tough November stretch where he expects things to start shaking out within the division with tough games at Washington, Philadelphia and Green Bay so they can really see what they're made of. "You're going to start seeing the risers and fallers, and a lot of these teams are playing each other," Campbell said. 2025 NFL Midseason: First-Half Surprises, Second-Half Storylines, New Super Bowl Picks (First-half surprises - Clare Brennan: The Lions haven’t missed Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson.  There was a lot of speculation heading into the season about how Dan Campbell and the Lions would fare without defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Both had moved on, taking head coaching positions—Glenn with the Jets and Johnson with the Bears—leaving many wondering where that left the Lions. While a flashy Week 9 win from Johnson and the Bears, coupled with a Detroit loss to Minnesota, may sting for Lions fans, the team has handled the staffing changes well overall.  New DC Kelvin Sheppard earned praise during a signature Monday-night game against the Buccaneers in Week 7, as his injury-laden defense held the Bucs to nine points. The offense has had its moments as well, with OC John Morton leading the Lions to 350.8 yards per game (11th in the league) and 29.9 points per game (third). There’s no doubt the team’s O-line has had its struggles, which have been compounded by injury, and Detroit’s offense looked to be sputtering in its Week 9 loss to the Vikings. Was it a one-game fluke or indicative of mounting issues? The Biggest Question Facing Each NFL Team in the Second Half of 2025 (Detroit Lions: Is their offense still good enough to make them a Super Bowl threat?  Early in the year, the answer to this seemed to be a resounding "yes!" It didn’t look like they missed a beat after the departure of former OC Ben Johnson. But lately, the Lions' offense has looked a little off, especially in their once-powerful rushing attack which has been inconsistent. In two of their past three games, in fact, they’ve rushed for less than 100 yards. 2025 NFL Midseason Awards: Who Holds Edge in Hotly Contested MVP Race? (Defensive Player of the Year: Aidan Hutchinson, EDGE, Detroit Lions.  Greg Auman: This isn’t an easy one to pick. Myles Garrett has 10 sacks, one off Brian Burns’ NFL-leading 11, and Garrett leads the NFL with 15 tackles for loss. But five of his sacks came in one game, and he’s on a 2-6 team. This is an individual honor, but it carries more weight if you’re leading the defense on a successful team. You can make a case for Micah Parsons, a big part of why Green Bay is 5-2-1 with a top-five defense.  For me, the most important currency for a defensive player is game-changing plays, and Hutchinson already has four forced fumbles to go with seven sacks. Garrett has one forced fumble, Parsons has none, so what Hutchinson has done in generating takeaways more than offsets a few more sacks by other players.  I can understand choosing Garrett here, and I’ll also mention Nik Bonitto of the Denver Broncos and Will Anderson Jr. of the Houston Texans, both leading top-five defenses. PFF Grades and Data: Key insights for every NFL Week 10 game (Detroit Lions @ Washington Commanders:  With Penei Sewell pacing the league with a 97.4 run-block grade — the next-highest among offensive linemen is Quenton Nelson at 91.0 — the Lions are featuring him heavily at the point of attack. Detroit leads the NFL with 118 runs to the right of center, producing 626 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, both league highs. While the Commanders have faced the second most runs to the right of center (117, tied), they’ve defended them well, ranking seventh in yards per carry allowed (3.9).  On the other side of the ball is another strong trench matchup as Aidan Hutchinson faces Laremy Tunsil. Of Hutchinson’s league-leading 55 total pressures, 23 have come when lined up outside left tackle, where his 24% pass-rush win rate trails only Myles Garrett. NFL Week 10 Preview: Schedule, storylines, matchups to watch and betting spreads (Detroit Lions (-8.5) vs. Washington Commanders - Storyline of the game: An NFC Divisional Round rematch.  Just under 12 months ago, the Commanders shocked the Lions in the NFC Divisional Round, winning 45-31 to advance to the NFC Championship Game. Now, the Commanders’ 2025 season is on life support, while the Lions are once again riding their status as Super Bowl contenders.  The Commanders will likely be without quarterback Jayden Daniels (76.7 grade; 10th) for the foreseeable future after he suffered a dislocated elbow in Week 9, and are now 3-6 after losing four straight games. Three months ago, this contest would have had a lot more pomp and circumstance around it, but time moves fast in the NFL.  Matchup to watch: Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown vs. Commanders CB Mike Sainristil.  The Lions’ offense (78.0 grade; 5th) remains one of the top units in the NFL, and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown (87.0 grade; 6th) is always a big reason why. St. Brown has caught 59 passes (3rd) for 635 yards (6th) and seven touchdowns (2nd) in 2025, and is fifth in yards per route run (2.52).  Meanwhile, Commanders cornerback Mike Sainristil has permitted the fourth-most yards in coverage (413) so far this season. NFL midseason: 5 best games so far, and 5 must-watch games of 2nd half (5 best NFL matchups to come - 3. Packers at Lions, Week 13 (Thanksgiving):  The Packers absolutely blew out the Lions in Week 1. Since then, the Lions have looked better and the Packers have been good, though inconsistency plagues them. NFL Quarterback Rankings 2025: A Second-Year Star Is on the Rise (7. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions - Last ranking: 5.  The Lions are surprisingly only 5–3, but Goff is playing like a top-10 quarterback. He’s within that range for EPA per play (0.197), success rate (51.6%), touchdown passes (17), yards per attempt (8.0), QB rating (115.2) and completion percentage (73.8%). NFL QB rankings, Week 10: Who jumped 8 spots to reach No. 1? (Tier 3 - 12.  Jared Goff.  2025 stats: 8 games | 73.8 pct | 1915 pass yds | 8.0 ypa | 17 pass TDs | 3 INTs | 23 rush yds | 0 rush TDs | 3 fumbles.  Minnesota might have produced the blueprint for stopping the Lions' offense, sending blitzes from multiple angles to force Jahmyr Gibbs to stay in to block while the Vikings dropped traditional rushers into coverage. It complicated things for Jared Goff, who was clearly uncomfortable for most of the day.
