But on tape, the more I watched, the more I liked him. He’s super interesting, despite the level of competition. The inaccuracy probably isn’t punished as it should be at that level, but the dude can just play football. He makes throws down the field. He’s from a good program, they’re well-coached and he’s a good kid. The NFL will be a dramatic jump for him, but I like his demeanor, personality and play style. He’d be best suited in a downfield, play-action system. There’s a loop to his delivery; it’s a little longer. “But you can’t deny the tape. It’s pretty good.” Payton would be the fifth NDSU quarterback of recent vintage to make it in the NFL, joining Carson Wentz, Easton Stick, Trey Lance and Cam Miller. And his challenges will be similar to theirs, which went back to the aforementioned level of competition, and also how the Bison’s dominance meant the quarterback didn’t always have to be great. “I know everyone likes him. Best NFL Draft 2026 QBs: 1 stud, 1 sleeper and 1 'who's that guy?' pick (The deep sleeper: Cole Payton, North Dakota State - This section is reserved for the players too overlooked to even be sleepers. Even though he's labeled as an athlete on some draft boards, Payton is a legitimate passer with upside. Because of the progress that he has shown during the predraft circuit, he's now a favorite middle-round target for teams looking for a project passer with upside.  "He was finally healthy this year prior to that game in the playoffs and I actually liked his film quite a bit," an AFC scout assigned to the Midwest said. "We thought he was more of a Taysom Hill-type with the ability to do more than just pass it around."  Where he needs work: Payton has a full-circle throwing motion that includes loopy mechanics. He must become less reliant on his upper body to generate power in his throws, as his lower body stiffness is most notable when throwing passes to his left side. Progressing to secondary options and overall pocket awareness are other things that he needs to improve. He also has a habit of locking on to first reads and being unaware of underneath targets. Designed QB runs and short-yardage situations are successful with him because of his vision and willingness to fight through and shrug off would-be tacklers.  Payton was the most consistent passer during Senior Bowl week. He showed consistency executing progressions, layering throws, and no hesitancy on tight-window throws over the middle of the field. Even though he's labeled as an athlete on some draft boards, Payton is a legitimate passer with upside. Because of the progress that he has shown during the predraft circuit, he's now a favorite middle-round target for teams looking for a project passer with upside. "He was finally healthy this year prior to that game in the playoffs and I actually liked his film quite a bit," an AFC scout assigned to the Midwest said. "We thought he was more of a Taysom Hill-type with the ability to do more than just pass it around."  Where he needs work: Payton has a full-circle throwing motion that includes loopy mechanics. He must become less reliant on his upper body to generate power in his throws, as his lower body stiffness is most notable when throwing passes to his left side. Progressing to secondary options and overall pocket awareness are other things that he needs to improve. He also has a habit of locking on to first reads and being unaware of underneath targets. He has a compact and smooth throwing motion, keeps his feet under him, and throws with good anticipation and timing on quick cutting routes.  Payton showed good accuracy in short and intermediate routes, both in- and out-breaking routes, but he lacks the arm strength to maintain that accuracy on deep shots. On shorter and intermediate routes, he puts some pop in his throws, but when throwing downfield, he tries to place the ball at a target, rather than just cutting it loose. On Saturday, he was able to make adjustments on deeper passes, showing nice touch on sideline bending routes, but he didn’t always get the ball where he needed to, like on shorter routes. Payton throws a repeatable ball, maintains solid footwork and a nice wide base, and looks like he did his homework on the drills and was fully prepared. As a tough athlete, some have wondered whether Payton would consider shifting to a tight end role in the NFL, and the NFL broadcast even suggested that he compares well to Tim Tebow, a bruising left-handed quarterback who attempted a shift to tight end in his later NFL years. 2026 NFL Scouting Combine: 12 Small-School Stars Who Are Poised to Surprise (Cole Payton, QB, North Dakota State:  After four seasons as a backup with the Bison, Payton finally got his shot as a starter in the 2025 season, and he made the most of it. As a passer, he completed 161 of 226 (71.2%) for 2,719 yards (12.0 yards per attempt), 16 touchdowns, four interceptions, and a passer rating of 127.8. There are plenty of examples of Payton throwing downfield with velocity and anticipation into tight windows, and he should nail the throwing drills in Indianapolis.  Payton was actually at his best as a deep thrower in 2025, completing 35 of 56 passes of 20 or more air yards for 1,247 yards, eight touchdowns, one interception, and a passer rating of 138.4. To put that in perspective, Fernando Mendoza had a deep passer rating of 130.1, Diego Pavia’s was 102.2, and Ty Simpson’s was 101.2.  But really, it’s as a runner where Payton could make his bones at the combine. Parker Take Field in Mobile (Cole Payton, QB, National - Day 1 Update:  Much like Green, the name of the game for Cole Payton was enticing onlookers, and he did that on Tuesday. At 6’2 3/8″ and 229 pounds, Payton has the prototypical frame and exciting arm strength, and he was able to drive the ball to multiple levels in his first action.  Payton laid claim to the longest throw of the day: A 50-yard bomb to Caleb Douglas on a deep post route. The pass was a bit behind Douglas and forced an adjustment, but the timeliness yielded from Payton’s arm strength helped prevent DB recovery.  Later, Payton dished a pinpoint back-shoulder pass to Tyren Montgomery on the sideline, showcasing situational precision. The week is still young for Payton, but the talented lefty has a chance to win over evaluators if he can stay consistent and keep making plays.  Day 2 Update:  Green made the most exciting plays on Wednesday, but there’s an argument to be made that Cole Payton was the best quarterback overall between the two teams. The 6’2″, 228-pound passer’s raw talent pops, but his steadiness was what defined his game on Day 2.  In early team drills, Payton was extremely vocal pre-snap and showed impressive command in a new environment. More than that, he demonstrated the ability to convert in various scenarios. A late, behind-the-throw boundary comeback resulted in an interception for Thaddeus Dixon, and on multiple occasions, he held the ball and was swallowed up in the pocket.  That said, Payton bounced back in red zone drills. He delivered a high-point laser to Tanner Koziol in the back of the end zone, and also drew defensive attention on a read option, using his athleticism to induce a gravitational pull before selflessly tossing the ball to his back.  Payton is explosive and agile. Further, he is one of few quarterbacks in this class who has played in a pro-style offense, often taking the ball from under center. Talented, tough and well-suited to the dual-threat responsibilities so many NFL teams are searching for at quarterback now, Payton might just be the most heavily scrutinized player at any position at the Senior Bowl this year.
