Who is Travon Walker? NFL Draft's fastest-rising prospect reflects on journey to No. 1 overall pick discussion (4-28-22):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/travon-walker-embraces-chance-be-no-1-pick/pvvccuumjcngng5p7dehwfkk

Biggest boom-or-bust prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft (Travon Walker | EDGE | Georgia:  Walker is a rare athlete for his size, putting on a show at the NFL Scouting Combine after measuring at 6-5, and over 270 pounds. Combining that athleticism with the versatility to line up anywhere along the defensive front, in any scheme, and you’ve got a recipe for a potential No. 1 overall pick. The caveat? Walker’s production didn’t match his talent in college, and teams will have to believe that will change at the next level.) NFL Draft bust candidates: Malik Willis, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Drake London and the riskiest picks in 2022 (Travon Walker, EDGE, Georgia:  Walker has been one of the fastest risers ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft. He could end up being the No. 1 overall pick, but he could also end up being one of the biggest busts of draft weekend.  The logic for this pick is simple. Sure, Walker is a great athlete. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.51 seconds, completed the 3-cone drill in 6.89 seconds and blazed the short shuttle in 4.32 seconds, but he didn't exactly stand out in Georgia's defense.  Walker had decent numbers — 33 tackles, six sacks — with the Bulldogs last season. Even still, fans of college football heard more about Jordan Davis and Nakobe Dean as the driving forces of that Georgia front seven. There was decidedly less buzz about Walker, who put up pass-rushing tape that was only OK.  Walker has the athletic ability needed to be a good NFL pass rusher, but can he play as explosively as the numbers indicate? He didn't at Georgia. And will he do as well without other top-tier defenders around to help him? The upside is there, but it may be hard for Walker to live up to what's sure to be a lofty draft status.) NFL Draft Bust Watch: Buyer beware with these five polarizing draft prospects (Travon Walker, EDGE, Georgia - If Travon Walker goes, say, 12th Thursday night, no one would bat an eye. He’s a ridiculously talented athlete who is built like a defensive end and runs like a wide receiver.  But the Jaguars are giving him real thought to making him the No. 1 pick in the draft, which brings a whole different level of scrutiny.  While there’s a real chance Walker becomes a unicorn in the NFL, it’s legitimate to ask why Walker — with just 13 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks in 32 collegiate games — wasn’t one in college.  His athleticism didn’t help him much against Alabama tackle Evan Neal, who largely neutralized him in the teams’ two meetings in 2021. Walker had 5 tackles (1 for loss) in those high-profile games.) (4-26-22):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-draft-bust-watch-buyer-beware-with-these-five-polarizing-draft-prospects/

TWENTYMAN: 10 prospects who make sense for Lions in first round (4. Edge rusher Travon Walker, Georgia:  After an eye-opening NFL Combine that saw Walker run the 40-yard dash in 4.51 seconds at 6-foot-5, 272 pounds, he put on another show at Georgia's pro day a few weeks later. Walker not only worked with his fellow defensive linemen, but he also showed off his versatility by taking part in linebacker drills. He made it look pretty easy.  The size, athletic traits and versatility should play well at the next level. He has the kind of size and athleticism that could allow him to line up anywhere from the three technique to the nine technique.  Walker only had six sacks playing on the stellar Georgia defense last year – but he's an above-average run defender and he has position versatility. His athletic traits might lead to more production at the pro level if a team puts him on the edge and lets him just get after the quarterback.) (4-26-22):  https://www.detroitlions.com/news/10-prospects-who-make-sense-for-lions-hutchinson-johnson-thibodeaux

Detroit Lions 2022 NFL Draft Primer (Travon Walker, EDGE, Georgia:  Walker is the classic college production versus NFL potential scenario that teams are willing to bet on. Due to off-the-chart measureables, organizations feel that he is a ball of clay that can be molded into one of the league’s best pass rushers. Due to a plethora of factors, the production never met the full potential while at Georgia. He is a big projection, but with a limitless ceiling and versatility.) Jermaine Johnson II could be 'best edge rusher' in draft and a fit for Lions at No. 2 (And on Walker, Cosell said he's a "multi-position player" but a "projection" as a pass rusher.  "If you’re thinking of him as an edge pass rusher, that’s something you’re sort of projecting. You’re looking at his measurables and believing that he can do that because of his size and his arm length, but he did not do a ton of that at Georgia. They moved him around quite a bit, he played inside a lot where he was really good.") (4-26-22):  https://www.audacy.com/971theticket/sports/detroit-lions/jermaine-johnson-ii-could-be-a-fit-for-lions-with-no-2-pick

2022 NFL Draft News and Rumors: Will the Jaguars select Travon Walker or Aidan Hutchinson? (2022 NFL Draft News and Rumors: Will the Jaguars select Travon Walker or Aidan Hutchinson?  While there’s a minority that continues to speculate the Jaguars could still take an offensive lineman with the first pick of the draft, the consensus is that they’ll go with one of the pass rushers, Aidan Hutchinson or Travon Walker — but which one? Sources continue to tell me that Trent Baalke wants Walker, but owner Shad Khan prefers Hutchinson.) 2022 NFL Draft Week Rumors Monday (Earlier this offseason from speaking with Jaguars sources, I was first to report that Doug Pederson was going to be the head coach of the Jaguars, and at the combine, WalterFootball.com first reported that the Jaguars wanted left tackle Cam Robinson back next season. Shortly later, the Jaguars placed the franchise tag on Robinson. From following up with sources, it sounds like it is a 50-50 proposition between Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson or Georgia defensive end Travon Walker being the No. 1-overall pick. Some people in the Jaguars organization prefer Hutchinson, while it is widely believed around the league that general manager Trent Baalke prefers Walker. Stay tuned as the Jaguars are taking this decision down to the wire.) (4-25-22):  https://walterfootball.com/nflhotpress/article/2022-NFL-Draft-Week-Rumors-Monday

2022 NFL Draft Notebook: Quick Hits On The Top 10 Choices (Lions at No. 2: It’s pretty easy if the Jaguars roll with Walker--it’s Aidan Hutchinson to his hometown Lions. But if Hutchinson is gone, it’s not as simple as just giving Travon Walker to the Lions.  Walker is certainly in play. Lions LB coach Kelvin Sheppard ran the Pro Day workout for LBs at Georgia, and Walker flew through the drills faster than actual LB Nakobe Dean--a top 50 pick. You’d better believe that made a huge impression on the Lions and their decision-makers. But Kayvon Thibodeaux is absolutely in play. The Lions have spent all sorts of time and resources checking out the Oregon EDGE.  Yes, there are legit questions about his football character. For a team hellbent on culture and personal fit, Thibodeaux might not be a great match. Or he could be a perfect one. That’s the variable.  GM Brad Holmes has been heavily linked and allegedly attached to Thibodeaux for months. I don’t doubt any of that. But Holmes isn’t an authoritarian type of GM. The Lions are built around a consensus approach that also heavily values the input of head coach Dan Campbell, personnel assistants John Dorsey and Chris Spielman and empowered scouting and coaching staffs. It’s easier for me to believe the in-building consensus is Walker, not Thibodeaux.  And no, I don’t buy the Malik Willis talk one bit. Outside of Lions broadcaster (and criminally underrated OT) Lomas Brown stating he believes the Lions are taking Willis at No. 2 in a recent radio appearance, there has been ZERO talk emanating from inside Detroit about Willis. Nary a word. It’s all external noise. I know it’s hard to fathom, but this regime really, really, really likes Jared Goff. Insert shrug emoji here.) Finding NFL player comparisons for the top 32 prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft (Travon Walker, EDGE, Georgia (TSN: Montez Sweat, Mississippi State (2019), NFL: NA, RAS: Myles Garrett, Texas A&M (2017)):  Walker has quietly emerged in the conversation for first overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, and it's easy to see why. RAS gives him a 9.99 score and lists star defensive end Myles Garrett as his top comparison. The Sporting News is going with another first-round SEC defensive end in Montez Sweat from Mississippi State. Sweat also graded out highly on RAS with a 9.9 score, with both displaying elite speed grades and great or elite grades in explosion or speed grades. Sweat has established himself as a standout pass-rushing defensive end, grading 14th in pass-rush grades, per PFF, in 2020, his most recent full season of play.) 2022 NFL Draft Position Rankings: Edge Defenders (4. TRAVON WALKER, GEORGIA (BIG BOARD RANK: 12):  Walker is an elite physical specimen for a 6-foot-5, 275-pounder who even dropped into coverage this season and managed a pass breakup. He's still figuring out how to rush the passer, but you can't teach what he has.) Doug Kyed's Pre-Draft Mailbag: Why Kyle Hamilton is falling, potential Deebo Samuel trades and more (@BARKENWOOFEN: WHY IS WALKER SO HIGHLY TOUTED WHEN HE WAS ON THAT D LINE WITH THAT SECONDARY?  Teams obviously value athleticism, and Georgia edge defender Travon Walker was an elite tester with a 9.99 relative athletic score out of 10.  Michigan edge defender Aidan Hutchinson scored a 9.88 RAS, so ultimately, both players are among the most athletic players at their position.  Hutchinson earned a 94.5 PFF grade in 2021 and registered a 25 percent pass-rush win rate. Walker earned a 70.5 PFF grade and registered a 10.1 percent pass-rush win rate. So, if the Jaguars take Walker over Hutchinson, it’s much more potential- and upside-based.) NFL Draft: Eight bold observations about 2022 class (Travon Walker should be drafted in Round 2 - Gregory Rousseau was the ultimate developmental edge rusher in the 2021 class. This year, it's Walker, and he's even a more striking example. He rocked the combine, but for someone being considered for the No. 1 overall pick, he was wildly under-productive in college at Georgia.   And I get it regarding Walker for those who love him. The Georgia defense doesn't ask its edge rushers to fly upfield on every snap. But it's not as if that was the case for Kayvon Thibodeaux at Oregon, and he was significantly more productive when he was instructed to get after the quarterback as fast as possible.  Walker has two key elements missing from his game right now; one is technical and one is natural. He doesn't use his hands effectively to dispatch blocks as a pass rusher, and he's not bendy around the corner. His size -- 6-5, 272 pounds -- and measured athleticism indicate he has what it takes physically to has a sustained career in the NFL. But there should be a "project" footnote on his draft profile, something I wouldn't want on a prospect bound to go inside the top 5 who could be the first overall pick.  He's so far behind in the pass-rush move area that he graded as a second-round pick in my scouting gradebook.) Monson: 2022 NFL Draft edge defender rankings (5. TRAVON WALKER, GEORGIA:  Walker is one of the best athletes to enter the NFL at the position in a long time, and unlike other special athletes, he has the complete athletic and measurable profile. He is exactly what teams would draw up in a lab to be a productive edge rusher, but the problem is he hasn’t been a productive edge rusher. Georgia’s defensive scheme certainly explains some of that, but it doesn’t get you all the way there, and anybody drafting him is doing so with a lot of projection to the next level. Walker’s pass-rush win rate last season was just 10.1% — less than half of other elite prospects. There have been too many athletic prospects fail in the NFL to just assume Walker will become elite because of those physical tools.) NFL News and Rumors Mailbag: Potential trade in top five of NFL Draft, QBs taken in Round 1, and more (Are there examples of Travon Walker-like risers who have been successful in the NFL?  Georgia defensive end Travon Walker has seen his stock catch fire in recent weeks after his unbelievable performance at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.  At 6-foot-5 and 272 pounds, Walker ran a 4.51-second 40-yard dash and a 6.89-second three-cone drill. Those are elite numbers for a defensive end at any size, so that tells you how much of an athletic freak Walker is at this stage in his career.  However, the concern with Walker is that his college production was middling (at best) on paper. Through three seasons, Walker produced just 61 tackles (13 for loss), 9.5 sacks, and 3 pass breakups. The lack of production — combined with the impressive Combine numbers — has some critics shrugging their shoulders because of the lack of clarity.  That said, rumors have gathered that the Jacksonville Jaguars have interest in Walker with the first overall pick. With little-to-no trade leverage, a smokescreen rumor wouldn’t do much for the Jaguars. Therefore, there’s reason to believe the interest is legitimate.) NFL Mock Draft Stock Watch: Which players are rising and falling in experts' eyes in 2022? (The first round picks who've pushed their way closer to the top (4) - Walker was overshadowed at the Combine by teammate Jordan Davis, but still put together a historically strong performance for a big man. He’s being projected to go as high as second overall now and has an average draft position of fourth.) (4-14-22):  https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-mock-draft-stock-watch-players-rising-falling

2022 NFL draft: The top 12 edge defenders (4.  Travon Walker, Georgia (Height: 6’5″ (78th) Weight: 272 (66th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.51 seconds (98th), 10-Yard Split: 1.62 seconds (70th), Vertical Jump: 36 inches (80th), Broad Jump: 123 inches (87th), 3-Cone Drill: 6.89 seconds (93rd), 20-Yard Shuttle: 4.32 seconds (76th), Wingspan: 84 1/4 inches (95th), Arm Length: 35 1/2 inches (95th), Hand Size: 10 3/4 inches (95th)) - Bio: Yury “Travon” Walker was a five-star recruit out of Upson-Lee High School in Thomaston, Georgia as a multi-position defender, running back, and tight end. He passed on Alabama, Clemson, and South Carolina to go with his home state school of Georgia, and he made Freshman All-SEC in 2019. But he didn’t start a single game in the Bulldogs’ loaded defenses until 2021, when he started all 15 games in the NCAA’s most loaded defense. Then, he amassed 7.5 sacks, nine quarterback hits, and 20 quarterback hurries on 381 pass-rushing snaps. As much potential as he’s shown to date, Walker may be the biggest upside prospect in this entire draft class.  Stat to Know: Walker amassed 11 total pressures in his three final games with the Bulldogs — against Alabama in the SEC Championship game, against Michigan in the Orange Bowl, and against Alabama again in the College Football Championship.  Strengths: It’s very easy to see why NFL teams will fall in love with Walker’s preposterous traits. This sack against Michigan has three Wolverine hats on Walker at one point, and he somehow wriggled out of it to take the quarterback down when the quarterback was running away from him. Yikes. Walker taking Mr. Quarterback down with one big paw at the end was the denouement.  Missouri’s right guard is in a very, very, very bad place here, and he probably knows it pre-snap. He’s singled up on Walker on the inside, and you can guess how that turned out — with a decisive bull-rush, and the guard on his butt.  Weaknesses: There’s an entirely legitimate argument to be made that Walker benefited to an insane degree by the fact that he was surrounded with generational first-round defensive talent all around him. How do you sort that out? Look at the plays where Walker was double-teamed, and see how he reacted. Against Alabama, he did not display the techniques required to knife through the double. It’s an area of concern in his short-term value if he’s drafted by a team requiring him to be the alpha dog from Day 1.  Another example — this time against Texas, where Walker doesn’t really have an answer to getting doubled on an inside stunt.  As athletically impressive as Walker is, there are times when this actually gets in his way — he’s still learning to combine his ferocious burst and next-level speed with timing and spatial awareness, which leads to “cat on a kitchen floor” moments like this rep in which he tries in vain to catch up with Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. You’ll also see this too often when he’s defending in space. Conclusion: Every draft class had its “traits vs. production” players, and there are few more obvious examples in recent years than Walker. There are times when he looks like the EDGE1 in this class, and it’s not even close. Other times, his lack of advanced tools will show up, and you realize that he’s a work in progress — like every other draft prospect in football history. But those traits will have him drafted highly, justifiably so, and I can’t wait to see what he looks like after some time with NFL-level coaching.  NFL Comparison: Jason Pierre-Paul. When Pierre-Paul came out of South Florida in the 2010 draft, he was seen by most as an athletic freak with raw technique that would take time to develop. The Giants selected him with the 15th overall pick, betting on the upside, and that went pretty well for them when Pierre-Paul was at his best. Teams are going to be falling all over themselves for Walker based on his raw traits, but there’s a bit of caveat emptor here — Walker may be one of those pass-rushers who needs a year in the NFL to sort things out. If he does, he could easily be the most disruptive edge defender — perhaps the most disruptive defender — in this class.) Treash: A look at the former five-star recruits in the 2022 NFL Draft (EDGE TRAVON WALKER, GEORGIA BULLDOGS (247 (Composite Rating: 22nd, Draft Projection: Top 10):  It’s no secret that Walker is a physical freak: He clocked a 4.51-second 40-yard dash (97th percentile among edge historically), 35-inch vertical (76th), 10-foot-3 broad jump (85th), 4.32-second short shuttle (70th) and a 6.89-second three-cone (93rd). He also has long, 35.3-inch arms.  The problem is that he hardly developed as a pass-rusher since he arrived in Athens. His pass-rush move arsenal is non-existent, with little to no natural feel. The 6-foot-5, 272-pounder relied on his length with the bull rush and long-arm, but it still wasn’t effective against college tackles, even with that advantage. Despite playing for a historically good defense in 2021, the Georgia product still produced just a 66.1 pass-rush grade and an 11.2% win rate in his three years in Athens.  His lack of development while playing for an A-list program is a major concern, and while there’s no denying what he can develop into with further top-notch coaching, it’s likely going to be multiple years before Walker can fully maximize his physical gifts, if at all.) What They're Saying: 'Beware' of Drafting Travon Walker (4-12-22):  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/news/what-they-are-saying-about-travon-walker

2022 NFL Draft: Defensive line prospect superlatives (FREAKIEST ATHLETE: TRAVON WALKER, GEORGIA - The PFF database includes NFL Scouting Combine data that goes back to the early '90s. Since then, we’ve never seen an all-around athlete at the edge position of Walker's caliber. Just look at how absurd he can move.  My favorite part about those numbers is that if you compared them to cornerbacks, only his 10-yard split would be below the 25th percentile.) (4-12-22):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2022-nfl-draft-defensive-line-prospect-superlatives

2022 NFL Draft: Buyer beware for these five prospects (Travon Walker, EDGE, Georgia:  There is zero doubt in Walker's passion for the game and his production while in Athens. As a floor, he is going to be a successful run defender. If the pass rusher is taken in the top five, then there are going to be expectations on a level similar to Myles Garrett, Chase Young and Joey and Nick Bosa. Those are unfair expectations early in his career. He is not as polished in rushing the passer as those players. Until he develops more pass rushing moves and counters, he is going to get some sacks just by winning with size, speed and/or power. His inclusion on this list is less about the player and more about the expectations likely to be placed on him.) Lions draft: Pros and cons of all the candidates for the No. 2 overall pick (Travon Walker, DE, Georgia - Walker emerged as a viable candidate for a top choice with a phenomenal workout season. His closest physical comparisons are Myles Garrett and J.J. Watt, athletic comps that attract serious attention. He’s more of a projection as a player after being part of a rotation at Georgia amongst a very talented defense and not having the traditional production of a top pick.  Pros:  Rare athletic traits with outstanding length and power.  Positionally versatile, can align anywhere from 3-tech to stand-up OLB.  Outstanding length with powerful arms, shoulders and core that can stack up even the best offensive linemen.  Very good at locating the ball and anticipating how the play will progress.  Bull rush works both inside and outside.  Showed improved hand usage and ability to combat blocks in his final games at Georgia.  Motor runs hot and he plays with passion and effective violence on the field.  Cons:  Low production (9.5 sacks, 13 TFLs in three seasons).  Has not shown he can win with speed or quickness consistently as a pass rusher.  Benefitted from being part of a wildly talented squad and did not stand out as being above the supporting cast often.  Doesn’t follow up his initial burst consistently; very methodical moves and limited effectiveness after the first thrust.  Lacks creativity and quick adaptability at beating blocks and attacking the backfield) (4-10-22):  https://lionswire.usatoday.com/lists/lions-2022-nfl-draft-options-for-2nd-pick-scouting-reports/

Predicting draft slot based on athletic testing and production for 2022 edge defenders (Walker, on the other hand, is identified as one of the premier athletes in the class while being one of its least productive players. His lack of production has been noted repeatedly, but it is worth noting that he did not grade particularly well under PFF’s schema despite his stellar technique in the run game. Additionally, his tackle-based metrics against the run (stops and stuffs) were artificially lowered as a result of playing with a legendary front seven at Georgia.) 2022 NFL Draft: Pro comparisons and analytical team fits for top edge prospects (DE Kayvon Thibodeaux (PRO COMPARISON: Rashan Gary, Green Bay Packers):  Walker's 34 QB pressures in 2021 were tied for 13th-most in the SEC, per PFF, which is not the blaring stat line usually associated with a likely top-10 selection. However, it's the rare blend of traits that is driving his value. Like Gary, Walker's physical testing was exceptional, especially for their height (6-5). Computer Vision reveals that Walker had far more consistent results against the run in his college career, while he is still developing as a pass rusher. Aidan Hutchinson has the safest floor in this class, but Walker's potential ceiling is higher than the other edge defenders. I base that assessment on Computer Vision showing that he was improving over the course of last season in a pattern that resembles similarly athletic edges who made big jumps in the NFL.  TEAM FIT: New York Giants.  With a relatively low number of snaps played at Georgia and a pass-rush skill set that's still developing, Walker's game will be maximized by a team with a great teacher and enough pieces to make use of his run-stopping ability while his true pass-rushing chops are cultivated. Don "Wink" Martindale is perfect for the mentoring role. And playing with former Georgia teammate Azeez Ojulari creates even more favorable conditions. And the Giants boast a pair of top-10 picks (Nos. 5 and 7).) (4-7-22):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2022-nfl-draft-pro-comparisons-and-analytical-team-fits-for-top-edge-prospects

2022 NFL Draft preview: 5 edge rushers that could interest the Lions (4. Travon Walker, Georgia (6-5, 272. 4.51 40-yard dash.):  Talk about an athletic specimen. Walker almost ran in the 4.4's at 6-foot-5 and 272 pounds at the Combine. He might also be the most positionally diverse defensive lineman in this draft, which teams will love about him. He played inside a lot at Georgia, but what could he do with that size and that athleticism if a team puts him on the edge and just lets him get after the quarterback? The only hesitation teams should have is a lack of production last season – 6.0 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss – that doesn't match the athletic traits.) NFL Draft News and Rumors: Travon Walker in play for No. 1 pick, Sauce Gardner could go top two, and more (Travon Walker is the mystery man of the NFL Draft - While Hutchinson is definitely in play for the first overall pick, he has competition.  Georgia edge rusher Travon Walker has on-campus (30) visits scheduled with every team selecting in the top five, sources tell PFN’s Aaron Wilson. Walker will travel to meet with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, New York Jets, and New York Giants, among others.  So yes, that means Walker is being considered by Jacksonville with the No. 1 overall pick. That’s an incredible sign of intrigue for a physically gifted player who didn’t put up eye-popping stats in college.  And it’s a sign of just how wide-open and unpredictable the top 10 of the NFL Draft could be.) 2022 NFL Draft: Risers and fallers according to PFF's Mock Draft Simulator (Risers - EDGE TRAVON WALKER, GEORGIA (PFF Big Board Rank: 14, Mock Draft Sim ADP: 9.7):  Almost all of this year’s Georgia defensive prospects (with a notable exception to come) have seen their draft stocks trend upward in a major way since athletic testing began. It turns out, not only have they been exceptional prospects, but they’re all freakish athletes, as well. None may be ascending quite like Travon Walker, who has surpassed Kayvon Thibodeaux on many boards as the No. 2 edge rusher in the draft and perhaps the No. 2 overall player come draft day.  That has yet to be reflected in the mock draft data, but we can see his stock consistently going up over the pre-draft process — and it may not be done climbing.  Walker put together one of the best workouts of any player at the combine, but teams need to reconcile that with his pedestrian production — particularly as a pass-rusher — in college. Playing on a loaded defense only explains so much, as does a scheme that set the unit up for success more than it set Walker up individually. Last season, Walker generated a pass-rush win rate of just 10.1%, less than half that of other elite prospects.) NFL Draft: Walker headlines buyer-beware prospects (Travon Walker, EDGE, Georgia - Why: Lack of pass-rushing moves; minimal bend.  At 6-foot-5 and 272 pounds with arms over 35 inches long and a tremendous, all-around combine workout to his name, Walker appears like a justifiable top-five selection and someone with a strong likelihood of becoming a monstrously productive pro.   On the field, his game is reminiscent of a prospect who should be picked much later and is in need of substantial technical maturation before he can become an effective NFL player.   Despite his 6.89 three-cone time -- scintillatingly fast for someone of his height and weight -- Walker is noticeably stiff around the corner, which is essentially the cardinal sin of rushing the quarterback from the outside. It's exceptionally rare for an inflexible defensive end to morph into a star in the NFL. If that type of player does beat the odds, he's typically a pass-rush move genius. Unfortunately for Walker, he's not that, either.  Against the run, the Georgia specimen uses his length to his advantage to dispatches blocks on a regular basis. When he's attacking upfield, the effective, powerful hand work is almost nonexistent.  Sure, Kirby Smart did ask Walker to read and react instead of just putting his head down and flying into the backfield like other edge rushers in this class, but I would be very hard-pressed to pick someone at that position who didn't have vast experience attacking the quarterback in a traditional sense in college.  Walker has major upside, no doubt. The athleticism at his size screams that. But he doesn't possess two of the most foundational elements needed to get after the quarterback. He's extraordinarily risky.) Five prospects who could go No. 1 in 2022 NFL Draft; plus, Kyle Hamilton's 40 and Todd Bowles' second try (Walker - The fastest riser on draft boards around the league is a possible No. 1 overall pick due to his potential more than his production. Walker's combination of size, speed and athleticism has captivated the imagination of NFL defensive coaches. At 6-5, 272 pounds, with extraordinary testing numbers (4.51 40-yard dash, 35.5-inch vertical leap, 10-3 broad jump, 6.89 three-cone), the Georgia product is a five-star athlete with the tools to develop into a blue-chip playmaker at the line of scrimmage. Although Walker’s production (9.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss) over three seasons in Athens might seem underwhelming, the NFL scouting community is willing to gamble on his upside based on his freakish athleticism and flashes as an effective inside pass rusher. However, taking him first overall would come with the expectation that he performs like a top-five pass rusher early in his career. And based on his college résumé, it's hard to see that level of play right away.) Could the Detroit Lions really draft a safety with a top-2 pick? ‘We’re looking for game-changers’ (Travon Walker is a freak athlete, but the production didn’t always match it at Georgia and he could spend a lot of his time playing inside.) 2022 NFL Draft: Biggest weaknesses for top 10 prospects (Georgia EDGE Travon Walker
(Biggest weakness: Limited pass-rushing moves, bend):  Walker is a bit of cautionary "workout warrior" to me. At 6-5 and 272 pounds, he did the three-cone drill in 6.89 seconds. That, on paper, indicates he's the bendiest, most intimidating outside speed rusher ever. On film, he's the polar opposite of bendy or flexible around the corner.  Does he move well for his size? Ab-so-lutely. I would've guessed his three-cone would've been closer to 7.40 than under 7.00 seconds. On top of that, I didn't see a legitimate pass-rushing move besides him rushing well up the field, beyond the quarterback, then stopping and trying to peel back to the passer. Walker is an all-upside prospect, which may appeal to some. I like my "upside" prospects to have some technically sound flashes.) Comparing top 2022 prospects to former draft busts (Georgia EDGE Travon Walker (Bust: Vernon Gholston  and year: No. 6 overall, 2008 draft (Jets), College: Ohio State):  Gholston was much shorter than Walker and didn't test as well in the agility drills as the Georgia star did at the combine a few weeks ago. There are parallels, though. Gholston rose from relative obscurity -- and I write "relative" because he was playing at Ohio State -- and emerged as a legitimate top-flight prospect in the 2008 class despite less-than top-flight production figures or refinement as a pass rusher. People got behind the idea of him as an athletic freak who had his best football in front of him. His chiseled frame and 4.65 40-yard dash at 266 pounds sealed the deal. Gholston's best football wasn't in front of him. He was stiff -- Walker isn't -- and wasn't quite sure how to use his hands to beat blockers. Walker has that problem, too.) 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Post-Combine II (Up - Travon Walker, DE, Georgia Last week in the Hot Press, WalterFootball.com reported that teams at the very top of the first round are considering Walker and he has a shot at being one of the first players selected in the 2022 NFL Draft. From speaking with sources, it sounds like Walker has become a serious contender to go either No. 1 overall to the Jaguars and No. 2 overall to the Lions. Right now, Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson is the favorite to go first overall, but Walker is in the conversation.) (3-22-22):   https://walterfootball.com/draft2022stock_27.php

TWENTYMAN: Lions have options at edge rusher in stacked 2022 draft class (Walker had a terrific Combine, measuring in at 6-foot-5, 272 pounds and running the 40 in 4.51 seconds. He showed explosive traits in the vertical (35.5 inches) and broad jump (10'3"). He also had a good pro day at Georgia, showing off his position versatility. He has likely put himself into the first-round conversation.  "At University of Georgia, we play a lot of different defenses and so therefore you can be scattered all out on the field from playing a five technique, a four I on the front, you play a three," Walker said at the Combine.  Walker said playing the five technique, getting dirty in the run game and coming off the edge is where he thinks he projects best in the NFL.) Lions LB coach Kelvin Sheppard was running all of the workouts for the linebacker group for the Bulldogs. He was closely watched by Lions special assistant and legendary LB, Chris Spielman. Sheppard was visible on the SEC Network barking out orders and coordinating the drills the talented set of LBs went through during the session.  This is Sheppard (in grey with the long hair) working out Travon Walker, who is a defensive lineman but has movement skills and athleticism that could also work at OLB. He ran a 4.53 40-yard dash to go with a 6.89 in the 3-cone drill. His athleticism certainly pops off the page, but the most enticing thing about him may be the fact that he might’ve been playing out of position at Georgia.  With the Bulldogs, Walker played on the inside of the defensive line while other pass rushers got after the quarterback. As a pro, he can play either on the edge or inside as he did in college. This versatility is very enticing, and could be the separator between him and Thibodeaux.) NFL Draft Prospects 2022: Players who improved their draft stock following Combine include Christian Watson, Travon Walker, and more (Travon Walker, DL, Georgia:  In all honesty, you could take out Georgia DL Travon Walker‘s name and position from this header and replace it with any Bulldogs prospect. There’s been a sensational week of performances by the reigning national champions. Particular attention should be paid to safety Lewis Cine, who showcased the exceptional speed that has made him a nightmare for opposing offenses and could land him a spot in the first round.  However, amongst those performances, Walker potentially made himself the most money at the 2022 NFL Combine. The versatile defensive lineman was a top-five performer at almost all of the athletic testing drills. He also showcased his incredible agility during on-field workouts. The long defender weighs 275 pounds, but moves as if he's 235, posting a 4.51 40 and a 35 1/2-inch vertical jump that played a significant role in earning him a Next Gen Stats athleticism score of 87. He was consistently smooth in the field drills and ran the hoop with ease while bent at a near-constant 45-degree angle. NFL Combine 2022: Jordan Davis, Nik Bonitto among 5 defensive linemen who improved their draft stock (Travon Walker, Georgia:  I hope you had the popcorn out for Travon Walker‘s testing results at the NFL Combine because the Georgia star joined his teammate Davis in pacing the defensive linemen. He finished with an absolutely freakish RAS of 9.98 at the defensive end position. And odds are, he likely would’ve put up an elite RAS at either defensive tackle or linebacker as well. He was used all over the line at Georgia, and that can carry over to the NFL.  Among the otherworldly numbers, Walker posted a 4.51 40-yard dash at 6’5″, 272 pounds. He also logged composite numbers in the 90th percentile in both the explosiveness and agility drills. Walker had a 35.5-inch vertical, a 123-inch broad jump, a 4.32 shuttle time, and an absurd 6.89 three-cone. Roundtable: What Lions Can Learn from 2022 Combine (3. Share one draft crush you have developed on offense and one you've developed on defense.  On defense, Travon Walker looks like he might be a steal in the first round. 2022 NFL Scouting Combine: Risers and fallers following defensive line and linebacker drills (Risers - Travon Walker, Georgia (40-yard dash: 4.51 seconds.  Vertical jump: 35.5 inches.  Broad jump: 10-foot-3.  3-cone: 6.89 seconds.  Shuttle: 4.32 seconds):  Considering he did all the above at 6-foot-5 and 272 pounds with 35.5-inch arms, this was nothing short of an all-time combine for Walker. That’s the kind of athlete who simply isn’t going to escape the top 10 in this year’s draft. That’s too freaky to pass up on, especially considering what he could develop into. Among 270-plus pound edge rushers who have ever tested pre-draft, Walker had the fastest 40-yard dash ever, the 11th-best broad jump and the fourth-best 3-cone.) NFL Combine results: 12 standouts from the edge rusher group (Travon Walker, Georgia, 6-foot-5, 272 (4.51/1.62 (40/10), 6.89 (3-cone), 4.32 (short shuttle), 35.5 vertical, 10-foot-4 broad jump):  Walker’s performance was so impressive that it has some talking about him being a possible contender for the Lions and their No. 2 pick. If this seems like an overreaction after a workout, I want to point you to the fact that The Athletic’s Dane Brugler (arguably the best draft analyst in the game) has been singing Walker's praises for months now and had him ranked as his sixth-best player in his pre-Combine rankings ($ubscrption): "I know I’m higher on Walker than most, but I’m okay with that — I’m betting on his rare traits. He has impressive movement skills for a 275-pounder, including an explosive first step to shoot through gaps, cross the face of blockers or chase down plays. He wasn’t asked to be a consistent outside rusher in the Bulldogs’ scheme, but that helped him develop into a strong run defender, disengaging and leveraging blocks. Walker is still developing his sequencing plan as a pass rusher, but he has freaky athletic traits for his size and offers the natural power and length to consistently win his matchups. He projects as a scheme-diverse end with the ceiling to be one of the best NFL defenders from this draft class."  And his excellent performance in Indianapolis went beyond the measurable numbers. In drills, he displayed fluidity in his movements, quick feet, powerful hands, loose hips, explosion out of the gate and changing direction, solid bend, a smooth ability to drop into coverage, movement without hesitation or pauses, and overall things just looked easy for him.  It was a really good day for Walker.) 2022 NFL Combine: Defensive line winners and losers (Winners - Travon Walker, Georgia: Walker tested like an elite athlete. After impressing during the weigh-in at 6-foot-5, 272 pounds with an 84 1/4" wingspan, the Georgia product ran a 4.51 seconds 40-yard dash and had a very good 6.89 seconds 3-cone drill. His explosiveness and agility tested off the charts all night. His movement skills were smooth through the on-field portion of the night. He had only 9.5 sacks in 29 games as a Bulldog in the middle of an uber-talented roster. See how top DL prospects fared in 40-yard dash at NFL combine (Walker outshined Hutchinson and Thibodeaux in Saturday’s testing, running a lightning-fast 4.51-second 40, third fastest among linemen, and posting a 10-3 broad jump and 35.5-inch vertical at 6 feet 5 and 272 pounds.  Walker had six sacks while starting at defensive tackle for Georgia’s national championship defense, but has position flexibility to play edge and inside in the NFL.) Combine Day 3 combine winners, losers (Travon Walker:  The combine was an excellent opportunity for Walker to show skills he did not get to show during his college career. At Georgia, he played inside while a slew of talented edge rushers got after the quarterback. During on-field drills, however, Walker took advantage of the chance to prove he could have handled that duty, posting a 4.51-second 40-yard dash, a 35 1/2-inch vertical, a 10-foot-3 broad jump and an elite 6.89-second three-cone drill. He displayed good flexibility for a player his size (6-foot-5, 272 pounds), turning the corner and running around hoops in drills to show his bend. Walker also displayed powerful punches and swipes at pads during his workout, portending a bright future as a pass rusher at the next level.) 2022 NFL Scouting Combine: Biggest winners from Saturday's workouts (EDGE Travon Walker, Georgia:  Another Bulldog mentioned? No surprise. Walker proved to be quite the athlete on film with special traits, but what he displayed was out of this world. At 6-foot-5 and 272 pounds, he was lights out in every drill. Walker started by running a 4.51 40 and followed that up with a 10-foot-3 broad jump, 35.5-inch vertical, and 6.89 three-cone. Seen as a potential top-10 pick, there are now rumblings of Walker not getting past the top-5.) NFL Scouting Combine EDGE/DL measurements (EDGE/DL winners - Hutchinson was one inch taller and five pounds heavier than his pre-combine projections. Walker, CBS Sports' top-ranked defensive lineman, had a nearly identical height and weight than his pre-draft projection. He also had one of the top hand measurements among defensive linemen. ) (3-5-22):   https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2022-nfl-scouting-combine-edgedl-measurements-hand-size-and-more-from-day-3-of-workouts/

2022 NFL combine: Edge rushers not named Aidan or Kayvon the Detroit Lions could be eyeing (Walker is a versatile name to watch. The Georgia standout looks like he could do some of the things Levi Onwuzurike does, especially considering Detroit’s expected switch to more four-person fronts next season. On some of those looks, he’s got some explosion and the ability to move inside or outside. Walker had 7.5 tackles for loss and six sacks last year. Detroit’s defensive line was improved in the previous year while still missing anything resembling push from the inside, though. “Playing end at the University of Georgia is very different. Cause at (the) University of Georgia, we play a lot of different defenses, and so, therefore, you can be scattered all out on the field from playing a five-technique, a four I on the front, you play a three,” Walker said. “So you really doing everything to just expand your resume. And it’s really a good thing that you can do all of that, play defensive end at the University of Georgia. If you can do play defensive end at the University of Georgia, it means a lot.") Prospects with the most to gain at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine for each position (Edge: TRAVON WALKER, GEORGIA - Walker is billed as a physical freak in the mold of someone like Rashan Gary coming out of Michigan. Georgia, however, had the 275-pounder making run reads and holding gaps instead of attacking. It’s why he earned only a middling 71.4 overall grade in 2021. What he could be a few years from now in a role that is conducive to his strengths is anyone's guess. That will be much more of an educated guess should he excel at the combine in Indianapolis.) Top 2022 NFL Draft prospects to watch at the NFL Combine (This edge class is by far the best in recent memory. The top four players could go in the first 10 picks, and no one would bat an eye. We all know Kayvon Thibodeaux and David Ojabo will turn heads but don’t sleep on Travon Walker. He is an elite physical specimen who can drop into coverage at 6’5″ and 275 pounds.) 2022 NFL Draft: Answering combine's burning questions, including who will erupt and who needs a big workout (5. Who needs a huge combine the most to save/boost their draft stock?  Edwards: "LSU cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. was my initial answer but it was reported Monday that he will wait until his Pro Day to perform. Georgia hybrid edge rusher and defensive tackle Travon Walker is a prospect that could rise into that top 10 conversation with a strong outing. If he puts up Rashan Gary-like numbers, knowing that Walker is a better player at this stage than Gary was, then it is reasonable to think he could be taken earlier than No. 12 overall, which is when Gary was picked.") 2022 NFL Combine preview: 15 edge rushers the Lions should be watching (Travon Walker, Suggested by Erik.  Walker is a prospect that has evaluators divided. Some see him as a 3-4 DE (5-technique) only, while others see a position versatile prospect that has more athleticism than what appears on the surface. If he lands in Detroit, I could see him line up from the 3- to the 9-technique. At Georgia, he was primarily asked to stop the run as 5T, but there were flashes of rare traits that showed up when he was asked to play off-platform. Look no further than his contributions on special teams to see there is more there than he was asked to do on a down-to-down basis. The Combine could do wonders to open people’s eyes to his physical gifts.) (2-27-22):   https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2022/2/27/22952050/2022-nfl-combine-preview-15-edge-rushers-detroit-lions

Lions 2022 Combine Preview: EDGE Defenders (DE Travon Walker:  Walker was an anchor on Georgia’s national championship-winning defense. He put immense pressure on quarterbacks, while being versatile enough to play both inside and outside on the defensive line.  Considered near the top of the second-tier of EDGE rushers, Walker has an opportunity to work his way up. If he can display some athleticism, to go along with his versatility, teams will find his skill set attractive.) 2022 NFL Draft: Ranking the top five players at every position (4. Walker:  Georgia’s Travon Walker is the biggest wild card in the first round. Physically, he looks like the kind of defensive lineman who doesn’t make it past Pick 5. On the football field, he is far too often a non-factor to expect him to make an immediate impact.  The high-end reps you see from the Georgia product tantalize to the point where he’s still well worth a first-round selection. If you trust your defensive line coach, draft this guy.) (2-10-22):   https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2022-nfl-draft-ranking-top-five-players-at-every-position

2022 NFL Draft: Agree or disagree with the latest risers and fallers (EDGE TRAVON WALKER, GEORGIA BULLDOGS: DISAGREE - Any team taking Walker in the middle of Round 1 is ignoring his collegiate production and hoping it can craft his tools into an impact NFL defensive lineman. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound Georgia Bulldog is an exceptional athlete, but he has never been able to put his physical gifts into action. He earned a 65.8 pass-rush grade in 2021 and has never earned a single-game pass-rush grade above 80.0. Considering that production, I think Round 1, in general, is far too rich, let alone somewhere in the ‘teens.) (2-9-22):   https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2022-nfl-draft-agree-disagree-risers-fallers

Cam Mellor’s Biggest 2022 NFL Draft Risers: David Ojabo, Travon Walker, and Cameron Thomas rise up the EDGE ranks (Travon Walker, Georgia:  Playing all around the national champion Georgia Bulldogs defense, Travon Walker dominated in 2021. Even among what is likely 10 draft picks on their defense, Walker made his presence felt game in and game out.  Walker played all around the Georgia defense, quite literally. He lined up from the interior of the defensive line and as far back as slot cornerback. And it didn’t matter where the 6’5″, 275-pound Walker lined up. He just produced.  Walker recorded 6 sacks and 7.5 tackles for a loss this past season. He patrolled like a linebacker at times but pushed the pocket like a dominant pass rusher. Walker also caused fits in run defense, routinely blowing up run gaps with his ability to push blockers back. He has strength, speed, balance, and power all wrapped up in one.  Walker moved from No. 91 on our preseason consensus Top 300 Big Board all the way to No. 28 today. Individual analysts at PFN have Walker ranked as high as No. 25 overall.) (1-27-22):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/biggest-2022-nfl-draft-risers-david-ojabo-travon-walker-cameron-thomas-climb/

10 prospects to watch in college football national championship game (3. Defensive lineman Travon Walker, Georgia:  Versatility is the name of the game for Walker. He can play inside and outside with size (6-5, 275) and athleticism. From the inside, he could provide some much needed pass-rushing prowess for the Lions. He started at defensive tackle all season and has 34 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks and a team-high 29 quarterback hurries. He had a sack against Michigan in the Capital One Orange Bowl.) (1-10-22):   https://www.detroitlions.com/news/10-prospects-to-watch-in-national-championship-game-dean-williams-walker

2022 NFL Draft Position Rankings: Edge defenders (4. TRAVON WALKER, GEORGIA (BIG BOARD RANK: 14):  Walker is an elite physical specimen for a 6-foot-5, 275-pounder who even dropped into coverage this season and managed a pass breakup. He's still figuring out how to rush the passer, but you can't teach what he has.) (1-6-22):   https://www.pff.com/news/draft-top-2022-nfl-draft-rankings-edge-defenders-aidan-hutchinson-kayvon-thibodeaux-george-karlaftis

2022 NFL Draft Stock - Post-New Year's Bowls (Up - Travon Walker, DE, Georgia:  Walker was non-factor against Alabama in the SEC Championship, but he was the best defensive lineman on the field for Georgia or Michigan their playoff matchup. The 6-foot-5, 280-pound Walker showed phenomenal speed, athleticism, strength, and versatility in a fabulous performance.  Walker made an excellent play in the first quarter against the Wolverines, powering through the pulling center and then ripping down the running back for no gain. On the next play, Walker knifed to the inside and hit Cade McNamara just after the pass got out. Early in the third quarter, Walker worked off his blocks to take down McNamara for a sack after some teammates flushed him out of the pocket. Early in the fourth quarter, Walker lined up on the inside and burned the left guard with a speed rush. Walker had the quarterback in his grasp, but the tackle was broken to deny him a second sack. Walker really helped himself against Michigan after underwhelming versus Alabama.) (1-4-22):   https://walterfootball.com/draft2022stock_18.php

Top 10 Defensive Tackles in the 2022 NFL Draft: Jordan Davis skyrocketing (10) Travon Walker, Georgia:  It’s just insane that Travon Walker is perhaps the fourth interior defensive lineman that comes to mind when discussing the Georgia Bulldogs. On any other team, Walker would be one of the premier defensive playmakers. But in a rotation that includes Jordan Davis, Devonte Wyatt, and future NFL Draft darling Jalen Carter, Walker doesn’t always get his due.  On our consensus big board at PFN, however, Walker receives recognition as one of the top defensive tackles in the 2022 NFL Draft. Walker’s weight may be a topic of discussion in the future — he’s listed at 275 pounds but may end up closer to 300. Closer to 300 would be a better range for Walker. Yet, he’s already a tremendously versatile lineman with good burst and length, with lateral twitch also mixed into his game.) 2022 NFL Draft Rumors: Matt Corral and the latest on the QB1 battle (If you had to guess right now, how many Georgia defenders will be taken in the first three rounds?  Right now, I say four, with an additional four on the cusp.  Cornerback Tykee Smith is Day 2 material but was lost for the season to a knee injury. Cornerback Derion Kendrick has been inconsistent and has character questions. Defensive end Travon Walker and linebacker Nolan Smith will get Day 2 consideration if they enter the draft.)
