2022 NFL Draft LB Leo Chenal

Scouting Reports:

Articles:

Ideal target for all 32 teams on Day 2 of the 2022 NFL Draft (DETROIT LIONS: LB LEO CHENAL, WISCONSIN - Linebacker was a popular connection for Detroit at 32nd overall in mock drafts, but the Lions ended up picking 20 picks earlier after trading up for Jameson Williams. Chenal offers a rare combination of size (6-foot-3 and 250 pounds) and athleticism (90th-percentile or higher finishes in nearly every athletic testing drill), and he could add on some value as a blitzer after recording PFF pass-rushing grades above 90.0 in each of the last two seasons at Wisconsin.):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-ideal-target-for-all-32-teams-on-day-2-of-the-2022-nfl-draft

Draft sleepers: 8 prospects to target AFTER Round 1 (4.  Leo Chenal (DJ's Big Board Ranking: No. 59, Production Score: 78, Athleticism Score: 90, OVERALL DRAFT SCORE: 82, STARTER PROBABILITY: 76%, PRO BOWL PROBABILITY: 6%):  A linebacker's size and speed are far from the only prerequisite traits for success at the pro level. But when you combine consistent three-down production at the college level with size, speed and explosive testing numbers? Yeah, you're cooking with gas. History shows value can be found on Day 2 of the draft, and according to the NGS Draft Model, this Wisconsin linebacker could be one of this year's top value picks.  At 6-2 5/8 and 250 pounds, Chenal blazed a 4.53 40-yard dash and jumped 40.5 inches in the vertical leap at Lucas Oil Stadium. Those are both elite marks for any linebacker, no matter the size. And then he put up 34 reps on the bench press at his pro day. Those numbers were good enough to earn Chenal an NGS athleticism score of 90, tied for the third-best mark among 36 linebackers invited to this year's combine.  Five linebackers entered the draft between 2019 and 2021 with a 90-plus athleticism score and 80-plus overall score. All five were first-round picks: Devin White, Isaiah Simmons, Devin Bush, Jamin Davis and Kenneth Murray. Chenal and Channing Tindall are two qualifiers from this year's class. Tindall, is another Day 2 name to know ...) (4-27-22):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2022-nfl-draft-sleepers-day-2-standouts-and-day-3-hidden-gems-to-target

2022 NFL Draft Position Rankings: Linebackers (3. LEO CHENAL, WISCONSIN (BIG BOARD RANK: 36):  Chenal is going to thrive in man-blitz-heavy schemes. He packs a punch as a downhill player, as he can light up offensive linemen with ease. His 94.1 run defense grade wasn't too far behind Micah Parsons‘ (94.8) PFF college record.) NFL Draft: Eight bold observations about 2022 class (Leo Chenal does not play to his combine/pro day workout - At a whopping 6-2 5/8 inches and 250 pounds, Chenal ran 4.55 with a 41-inch vertical (96th percentile among linebackers) and a 128-inch broad jump (94th percentile). But the Wisconsin product doesn't play to that level of explosiveness on the field. I love him as a blitzer, and Chenal is a devastatingly big hitter between the tackles.   I actually thought fairly often on film he looked heavy-footed. Now, in a straight line, he's a train. Chenal's lack of high-caliber change-of-direction capabilities scares me. There's an outside chance he carves out a role as a true enforcer at the strong-side linebacker spot, but even in that specific position today, you have to be able to cover, and Chenal is nowhere near ready to be an NFL coverage linebacker. He did not have a pass breakup or interception in 2021 and was mostly deployed downhill in passing situations. He's simply not as comfortable or athletic when sinking in coverage as he is thundering downhill.) 5 NFL Draft sleepers who could make a big impact as overlooked picks (1
LB Leo Chenal, Wisconsin:  Chenal is a prototypical Wisconsin star: A local three-star recruit who was overlooked by several blue blood programs — per 247Sports, his only other scholarship offer was from South Dakota State — and came to Madison to be the next link in a chain of smothering defenses. The Grantsburg native was the main attraction in the Badgers’ Death Row linebacker corps, racking up 115 tackles in 11 games last fall — including eight sacks and 18.5 (!) stops behind the line of scrimmage.  The perceived lack of athleticism that limited his college choices as a high school prospect have followed him to the NFL. At the combine, he showed why those were overblown; his 4.5-second 40 time at 261 pounds proves he has the speed to get from sideline to sideline and erase ballcarriers. While his coverage does need work, he can be the exact kind of glue guy NFL teams need in the middle of their defense — a beefy, high-motor tackler who powers through blocks, has a hand in just about every play and gives everyone else a little more room to operate.) 2022 NFL Draft: Ranking the top off-ball linebackers in this year’s class (Tier 3 -Leo Chenal (Wisconsin), 6-foot-2 1⁄2, 250 pounds:  There simply isn’t a better run defender in this class than Leo Chenal. What sets him apart from previous run defense specialists, however, is that Chenal is also one of the most athletic linebackers to ever test at the NFL Combine. When watching Chenal on film, you probably wouldn’t have guessed that this was the case, though. For instance, his movements when changing directions can look a bit labored, especially when dropping back into coverage, where he’s shown his fair share of struggles.  At worst, Chenal is an early-down run specialist in the NFL that can also sub in as a pass rusher. If he wants to stay on the field on third down, he will have to prove that he is not a complete liability in coverage.  Round grade: 3rd round) (4-14-22):  https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2022/4/14/23020265/2022-nfl-draft-ranking-the-top-off-ball-linebackers-in-this-years-class

2022 NFL draft: The top 11 linebackers (8.  Leo Chenal, Wisconsin (Height: 6’3″ (80th) Weight: 250 (90th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.53 seconds (87th), Bench Press: 34 reps, Vertical Jump: 41 inches (97th), Broad Jump: 10’8″ (95th)):  Bio: A three-star recruit out of Grantsburg High School in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, Leo Chenal took some unofficial visits, but the bulk of his recruiting timeline reads like many high school players from Wisconsin: A lot of Badger red shows up. He committed to play at Wisconsin as part of their 2019 recruiting class and enrolled in January of 2019 as an early enrollee.  Chenal played in 11 games as a true freshman, notching 20 tackles and a sack. During Wisconsin’s shortened 2020 season, Chenal took his first big step forward. He was named an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection after recording 46 tackles, three sacks and an interception in just seven games.  This past season, Chenal was named the Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year in the Big Ten, and earned All-Big Ten honors.  Stat to Know: Pro Football Focus charted Chenal with a “run stop rate” of 16.0%, which was second-best in the nation among linebackers. Do with that what you will.  Strengths: In a way, it seems fitting that Chenal won an award named after Dick Butkus and Pat Fitzgerald. Chenal is more of a throwback linebacker, a true between the tackles thumper who does his best work crashing downhill and destroying running plays. He plays with good technique against the run, using “stack/track/fall back” technique to maintain gap integrity against zone blocking concepts.  But every once in a while you simply need to run through someone’s face, and he can check that box. Oh, can he check that box.  I also like his feel for space when playing in a crowded box, even on runs to the edges. On this play against Arizona State, a jet sweep, watch as Chenal tracks the ball-carrier and shows that feel for blockers around him.  The range Chenal showed on this play was confirmed in Indianapolis, when he texted incredibly well for a linebacker. As you can see above, some of his numbers were in the 87th percentile and above for the position. There is also this.  Weaknesses: When you describe an off-ball linebacker as a between the tackles thumper, it comes with a certain connotation, and not a good one at that.  He is a two-down player who cannot help on third downs or against the pass.  With Chenal, there is some truth to that. The coverage parts of the game are not a strength. He could do better at reading out concepts and relating to the nearest threats when playing in zone underneath, and man coverage is not a strength of his despite the impressive athletic testing. Perhaps his best role on third downs is as an attacker downhill, letting him rush the passer rather than dropping him into coverage. Creativity and usage are going to be critical for him at the next level.  Conclusion: As we saw with other linebackers in this range of the draft, finding him the right home might be critical. Looking around the league, if he can work his way to Jacksonville and help the Jaguars with the running games they’ll face next season, that might be an ideal landing spot. Let him attack off the edges or through the interior on third downs, and you can make a three-down linebacker out of him.  Comparison: I’m reminded of Ja’Whaun Bentley when he was coming out of Purdue, another Big Ten linebacker who was viewed as a thumper, but carved out a bigger role in the NFL when turned loose as a blitzer off the edge or through the interior.) Charles Davis: 13 draft prospects I'd pound table for (Leo Chenal - Wisconsin · LB:  If you want a big linebacker (6-2, 261) who tackles everything that moves, Chenal is your guy. He missed the first two games of last season after testing positive for COVID-19 but still led the Badgers with 114 tackles, including 17.5 for loss (he ranked second in the FBS with 1.6 TFL per game). A finalist for the Butkus Award (nation's top LB), Chenal proved at the combine that some folks were sleeping on his athleticism. He finished among the top performers at his position in the vertical (40.5 inches) and broad (10 feet, 8 inches) jumps.) 2022 NFL Draft: Linebacker prospect superlatives (BEST AT TAKING ON BLOCKS: LEO CHENAL, WISCONSIN - It’s incredible how adept Chenal is at separating from blockers despite not possessing ideal length for the position (31-inch arms). That skill enabled him to earn a 94.1 run defense grade (first among linebackers) and 91.8 pass-rushing grade (second among linebackers) last season. Chenal is so adept at it that Wisconsin routinely walked him up on centers to play a tilt nose tackle role.) (4-13-22):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2022-nfl-draft-linebacker-prospect-superlatives

Lions 2022 draft: A linebacker for every round (3rd round: Leo Chenal, Wisconsin - Chenal put on quite an athletic display in his postseason workouts and the combine. He’s got top-of-the-charts speed, power and size for the position.  Chenal is fantastic at destroying runs between the tackles. He is a consistent heads-up tackler with rare power and good understanding of wrapping and sinking his weight after contact. The closing speed and ability to blast through trash to make the play at the sideline is all over his game tape, too.  Chenal has some limitations in coverage, where he’s not so natural or instinctive. For such an outstanding athlete in testing, his on-field movement is tighter and shows issues with body control and change of direction, but it’s still solid enough he can play right away as a two-down LB and also thrive on special teams. .Montana State’s Troy Andersen and Georgia’s Channing Tindall are also excellent fits here.) Wisconsin 2022 NFL Draft Scouting Reports include Leo Chenal, Jake Ferguson, and more (Leo Chenal, LB:  Positives: Explosive up-the-field linebacker coming off a career campaign. Breaks down well, uses his hands to protect himself, and rarely gets knocked off his feet. Fluid dropping off the line into coverage, gets depth on pass drops, and possesses a closing burst. Forceful on the blitz and sells out to make plays. Moves well laterally and works to get out into space to make the tackle. Possesses solid instincts and quickly recognizes and diagnoses plays.  Negatives: Gets washed from the action by opposing linemen. Does not stand out making plays in pursuit.  Analysis: Chenal displayed consistent progress on the football field at Wisconsin and turned in a tremendous junior campaign. He’s a terrific run stuffer who is forceful on the blitz, but he has size and scheme limitations.) (4-8-22):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/wisconsin-2022-nfl-draft-scouting-reports/

Is Leo Chenal Lions' Linebacker of Future? (4-7-22):  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/news/is-leo-chenal-lions-lions-linebacker-of-future

Top 10 Inside Linebackers in the 2022 NFL Draft: Devin Lloyd and Nakobe Dean lead the bunch (9. Leo Chenal, Wisconsin:  At 6’2″ and 260 pounds, Wisconsin’s Leo Chenal has the build of an old-school physical linebacker. Sure enough, he’s a stout and physical playmaker. However, there’s a deceptive athletic profile lurking beneath that prototypical frame. Chenal recorded a 9.99 RAS after posting elite or great athletic traits across the board at the NFL Combine and Wisconsin Pro Day.  You can see some of that athleticism at work on tape. Chenal is an explosive gap penetrator who appears to be shot out of a cannon when working downhill. An impressive technician, excellent processor, and reliable tackler, the Wisconsin LB has the profile of one of the top linebackers in the 2022 NFL Draft. Some improvements in his fluidity in coverage would help his cause as a three-down linebacker at the NFL level.) 2022 NFL Draft Stock - Post-Combine III (Up - Leo Chenal, LB, Wisconsin:  Chenal broke out for the Badgers in 2021, recording 96 tackles, eight sacks and two forced fumbles. The 6-foot-3, 261-pounder is a solidly built outside linebacker who is capable of getting after the quarterback on the edge. Some evaluators have graded him in the second round, but in a survey of sources, the majority had him as a third- or fourth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.) PFF news, notes and rumors: QB market after Carson Wentz trade, free agents who will receive bigger contracts than expected and the 2022 NFL Draft's tackle class (Doug Kyed: Wisconsin linebacker Leo Chenal’s pro-day workout was worth the slight delay after the combine. At 6-foot-3, 250 pounds, he benched 225 pounds for 34 reps and ran a 3.94-second short shuttle and 6.84-second three-cone drill. He aced all of his drills and earned a 91.5 overall grade in 2021.) NFL Combine 2022: Biggest winners and losers at every position (Winner: LEO CHENAL, WISCONSIN - If you were a top linebacker in this class heading in, chances are you won the combine. Almost every top guy ticked boxes left and right. Chenal, however, ticked every box at a hefty 250 pounds. His 4.53-second 40-yard dash, 40.5-inch vertical and 10-foot-8 broad jump are ideal for the blitz-heavy usage he’s likely to have in the NFL.) 2022 NFL Draft: How the combine will impact draft boards (2. Underrated no longer, linebackers lining up for early picks - While the edge rushers, receivers and defensive backs of this class have consistently drawn praise, an underrated crop of off-ball linebackers has quietly waited in the wings. Over the weekend, as if waiting to pounce on a slow-developing screen, they attacked.  While Tindall deserves top billing, his former SEC opponent Christian Harris of Alabama also had a stellar showing, as did Wisconsin’s Leo Chenal, Wyoming’s Chad Muma and Oklahoma State’s Malcolm Rodriguez.) Combine sleepers who shined: Are they good prospects? (Leo Chenal, LB, Wisconsin (Notable workout figures: 4.53 in the 40, vertical of 40.5 inches, broad jump of 10-8
Is he good?: It's complicated
New projected round range: Round 3-5):  Chenal is a good football player, there's no doubting that. He's a downhill thumper who routinely uproots offensive linemen on his way to the ball carrier or the quarterback as a blitzer. Being a quality run stopper and blitzer still has its value. How much value? Not nearly to the level it was even five years ago. His workout was more baffling to me than anyone else's at the combine. This will sound crazy after his workout, but Chenal actually looks heavy-footed on film, and in coverage he was a liability in 2021.) (3-7-22):   https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2022-nfl-combine-sleepers-who-shined-these-10-stepped-up-but-are-they-actually-good-prospects-heres-a-look/

2022 NFL Scouting Combine: Risers and fallers following defensive line and linebacker drills (Risers - Leo Chenal, Wisconsin (40-yard dash: 4.53 seconds, Vertical jump: 40.5 inches, Broad jump: 10-foot-8):  For my money, this was the single freakiest performance among an insanely athletic linebacker group. The reason being, Chenal did all that at a jumbo 250 pounds. He proved his downhill thumping ability won’t look any different against the strength in the NFL. The scary thing is, he didn’t even do what will arguably be his best drill: the bench press. Chenal has videos of him repping 225 pounds 40 times and is reportedly in contention to beat the linebacker record of 41.) (3-6-22):   https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2022-nfl-scouting-combine-risers-fallers-defensive-line-linebacker

Combine: Wisconsin, Montana State LBs shine on Saturday (Winners - Leo Chenal, Wisconsin: At 6-2 and 250 pounds, Chenal running 4.53 was awesome. He looks thick on film and not necessarily that fast. But that number will stick to his draft profile. He's a thumping downhill type who we now know has some speed in his arsenal. Those jumps were tremendous too, and frankly, a bit shocking. Good for him.) (3-6-22):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2022-nfl-scouting-combine-montana-states-troy-andersen-wisconsins-leo-chenal-shine-in-linebacker-workouts/

The nine biggest winners from Night 3 of the 2022 NFL Combine (Leo Chenal, LB, Wisconsin:  All Chenal did as a Badger was beat the hell out of anyone who dared carry the ball in his general vicinity. The lingering question about his pro prospects was the same that left him a three-star recruit in high school; would he be athletic enough to make a difference at the next level?  While he wasn’t the fastest linebacker in Indianapolis, it looks like he has the chops to chase down running backs and follow tight ends up the seam.  Chenal also showcased a 40.5″ vertical leap (third-best among linebackers) and ranked among the top five in the broad jump. Given his status as a fast-processing football sponge, he should be a Day 2 commodity come April.) (3-6-22):   https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/2022-nfl-combine-winners-day-3-jordan-davis-leo-chenal

2022 NFL Combine Stock Report - Linebacker (Up - Leo Chenal, LB, Wisconsin:  Leo Chenal had good tape coming out of Wisconsin, but it was unclear if he would post great workout numbers. That's exactly what he did in Indianapolis. He surprised with a 4.53 40 despite weighing in at 261 pounds. His jumping numbers were excellent as well; he notched a 40.5-inch vertical and a 10-8 broad jump.) (3-6-22):   https://walterfootball.com/combine2022stockLB.php

Badgers linebacker Leo Chenal is turning heads at the NFL combine (3-6-22):  https://badgerswire.usatoday.com/2022/03/06/badgers-linebacker-leo-chenal-is-turning-heads-at-the-nfl-combine/

Prospects with the most to gain at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine for each position (Linebacker: LEO CHENAL, WISCONSIN - Chenal hasn’t seen a ton of hype despite a monster 2021 season at Wisconsin that saw him earn one of the highest run-defense grades from a college linebacker in the PFF College era. The problem is that he was asked to do little more than stare down quarterbacks in coverage. That doesn’t mean he won’t be able to at the next level, but we simply didn’t get to see how smooth of a mover the 250-plus pound linebacker was in space. That will 100% be tested at the combine, and we’ll then have a better handle on his capabilities.) (3-3-22):   https://www.pff.com/news/draft-nfl-scouting-combine-prospects-most-to-gain-risers-2022

The 5 biggest names to watch at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine (5.  Bonus name! Leo Chenal, LB, Wisconsin:  Chenal is unlikely to sneak into the first round. He’s a tier below over inside linebacker prospects like Devin Lloyd and Nakobe Dean.  However, he’s the latest in a long chain of homegrown Wisconsin defenders who’ve gone from overlooked recruit to All-American. The biggest knock on his NFL prospects is a perceived lack of athleticism that has followed him from high school to the league’s doorstep.  A show-out performance in Indianapolis could dispel those concerns and strap a rocket to Chenal’s draft stock. If he can showcase fluid hips and a quick burst, he’ll prove he’s more than just a great college player.  Teams know and love his tenacity. His commitment to the game is so strong NFL.com includes this random bit of nonsense right in his official draft profile as a positive.  … sure. Chenal’s profile screams “FOOTBALL GUY.” A solid showing in Indianapolis could push him solidly into Day 2 consideration.) 2022 NFL combine: It’s time for the Detroit Lions to finally add a playmaker at linebacker (Leo Chenal (Wisconsin): If the Lions are looking for more of a thumper, perhaps Chenal will catch their eye. At 6-foot-2 and 261 pounds, he is one of the most physically imposing linebackers in this draft. And he brings the hammer when he gets downhill. His run-stop percentage last season was 16.1%, which was third-best in the country, and he also pressured quarterbacks 25 times, which was 16th.) 2022 NFL Draft: Ranking the top five players at every position (The name you can expect to see rise up draft boards in the coming months checks in at No. 4 on this list.  I love this linebacker class, and Leo Chenal’s ascension is a big reason why. He’s got a unique skill set for the position at over 250 pounds, but he doesn’t move like your typical jumbo linebacker. This guy can mirror wide receivers seamlessly in space to bring them to the ground. There isn’t a better pure downhill player in the class, as evidenced by his 93.6 run-defense and 92.2 pass-rushing grades) (2-10-22):   https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2022-nfl-draft-ranking-top-five-players-at-every-position

2022 NFL Draft: Pros and cons for PFF's top five linebackers (3. LEO CHENAL, WISCONSIN BADGERS (PFF Big Board Rank: 35) - PROS:  Chenal is one of the best take-on linebackers in the country. Offensive linemen go backward when he makes contact.  The former Badger has a unique size for the position. He holds 250-plus pounds easily.  He's light on his feet laterally for a bigger linebacker. He can mirror a running back in space.  CONS:  He had a very limited coverage role at Wisconsin. He did a little more than follow the opposing quarterback's eyes.  Chenal has a tendency to play high in space. Can take a bit to get going at his size.  Wisconsin's scheme allowed him some considerable freedom in the run game.) Top 15 2022 NFL Draft prospect performances in 2021 college football bowl games (14. LB LEO CHENAL, WISCONSIN BADGERS (PFF Grade: 78.1, Opponent: ARIZONA STATE):  Chenal is the best linebacker in the class when coming downhill, proving it week after week. Against Arizona State, he recorded a sack, a QB hit and three hurries from only six blitzes while adding four more stops on the day. Chenal finished the season with a ridiculous 94.1 run defense grade. He won’t leave the top-100 picks in April.) 2022 NFL Draft Position Rankings: Linebackers (3. LEO CHENAL, WISCONSIN (BIG BOARD RANK: 35):  Chenal is going to thrive in man-blitz-heavy schemes. He packs a punch as a downhill player, as he can light up offensive linemen with ease. His 94.1 run defense grade wasn't too far behind Micah Parsons‘ (94.8) PFF college record.) Top NFL draft prospects in every 2021-22 college football bowl game (LB LEO CHENAL, WISCONSIN:  At 6-foot-2 and 261 pounds, Chenal is a unique backer. PFN’s All-Big Ten Football Team Honors for the 2021 college football season (Big Ten Linebacker of the Year: Leo Chenal, Wisconsin.  Leo Chenal gave life for Wisconsin when the Badgers needed a spark this season. He recorded 7 sacks to rank fourth in the conference, but he also made a handful of other plays in coverage. Chenal patrolled sideline to sideline with ease and was the best player on his stingy defensive unit.  LB: Leo Chenal, Wisconsin) (12-7-21):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/all-big-ten-football-team-honors-for-the-2021-college-football-season/

Week 11 College Football Players of the Week: Garrett Wilson and Aidan Hutchinson thrive (Leo Chenal, LB, Wisconsin:  A regular to the Defensive College Football Players of the Week, Leo Chenal did it again. The Badgers linebacker led the team with 14 tackles, but he also added 3 tackles for loss (pushing him to 15 on the season), 1 sack, and 1 quarterback hurry.  Wisconsin’s defense continues to lead the team and has given the offense plenty of time to figure things out. Now, they’re on a tear.) (11-14-21):    https://www.profootballnetwork.com/week-11-college-football-players-of-the-week/

2022 NFL Draft Sleepers: A new challenger approaches at quarterback (Wisconsin LB Leo ChenalI:  Interestingly enough, Leo Chenal is of an almost completely different mold than Banks. While Banks profiles as a coverage-oriented linebacker given his size, Chenal is a 6’2″, 255-pound thumper who lives for gritty, low-scoring affairs.  Chenal dominated in Wisconsin’s recent win over Purdue, logging 9 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks. With his burst and all-out energy, Chenal is a dangerous blitzer. But he also plays with anticipation in congestion, and he knows how to free himself to make those decisive plays.) Top 10 Inside Linebackers in the 2022 NFL Draft: Devin Lloyd and Nakobe Dean lead the bunch (9. Some improvements in his fluidity in coverage would help his cause as a three-down linebacker at the NFL level.) 2022 NFL Draft Stock Report: Nicholas Petit-Frere rises, Cade Otton falls (Leo Chenal, LB, Wisconsin:  Leo Chenal has been making up for lost time after missing almost the entire first month of the season when he tested positive for COVID. His most recent gem was 9 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks during the Badgers’ victory over Purdue. This comes a week after Chenal posted 17 tackles against Army. Chenal is a large, forceful linebacker who is best making plays up the field. The junior has watched his game take off this season, and he’s flying up draft boards.) Week 8 College Football Players of the Week: Kayvon Thibodeaux and Leo Chenal shine (LB Leo Chenal, Wisconsin:  After producing a big game last week, Leo Chenal bested it in Week 8. An unranked Wisconsin team upset a ranked Purdue team, which is weird to type. Nevertheless, it was thanks largely to Chenal. The Badgers linebacker finished with 9 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and a career-high 3.5 sacks to lead the defense.) Big Ten Preseason All-Conference team ahead of 2021 college football season (Flex: Leo Chenal, Wisconsin:  With Ohio State losing their entire linebacker group to the NFL, there isn’t a better linebacker duo in the Big Ten than Sanborn and Chenal at Wisconsin. After a nervy freshman season, Chenal came on leaps and bounds as a sophomore in 2020. Although he showed early signs with a first career sack and interception in the win over Michigan, the Wisconsin linebacker’s crowning moment came against Minnesota.  Chenal racked up 13 tackles, 5 of which were for loss, with 2 sacks and a forced fumble as the Badgers won in overtime. The performance earned him the Bednarik Award Player of the Week as the best defensive player in college football. At 6’2″ and 250 pounds, the Wisconsin linebacker has the old school downhill thumper mentality and is a dangerous threat as a pass rusher. You can expect a career year in 2021.)
