What position on the offensive line does Ikem Ekwonu project to on Sundays? While I think it will be right tackle or guard, several people near the top of the draft tell me the team that selects Ekwonu will initially use him at left tackle. Finding NFL player comparisons for the top 32 prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft (Ickey Ekwonu, OT, NC State (TSN: Donald Stephenson, Oklahoma (2012), NFL: Kelechi Osemele, Iowa State (2012), RAS: Kenyatta Jones, South Florida (2001)): Ekwonu is not the typical offensive tackle based on his size — 6-4, 310 pounds — but he more than makes up for it with his speed. He ran a 4.93 40 at the combine and showed promising quickness with a 4.73 shuttle and 7.82 3-cone. Because of his combination of speed and size, he is similar to Oklahoma offensive tackle Donald Stephenson. The 6-5, 312-pound lineman ran a 4.94 40 and had a 4.73 shuttle, and was regarded coming out of college as a versatile lineman who would be a standout blocker both in the running and passing game.) 2022 NFL Draft Position Rankings: Offensive Tackles (2. IKEM EKWONU, NC STATE (BIG BOARD RANK: 5): The single most dominant run-blocking tackle in the country. Ickey Ekwonu, North Carolina State (6-4, 320. 4.93 40-yard dash.): Charting his progression in three seasons at North Carolina State reads like keeping score at an MMA event. As a rookie in 2019 he started the final seven games at left tackle and was credited with 37 pancake blocks. Moved to left guard at the start of 2020 – and later back to tackle – he had 50 pancake blocks and 22 knockdowns. He was a unanimous first-team All American in 2021.) 2022 NFL Draft: Breece Hall and Tyler Linderbaum head Next Gen Stats model's can't-miss prospects (7. Ickey Ekwonu N.C. State · OT · 21 years old (Production Score: 90, Athleticism Score: 76, OVERALL DRAFT SCORE: 91, PRO BOWL PROBABILITY: 21%): When it comes to the factors that best predict success for a prospective NFL offensive tackle, Ikemefuna "Ickey" Ekwonu checks every box. He has the tape (ranks as the no. 2 overall prospect in DJ's latest top 50), the accolades (consensus first-team All-American in 2021), the experience (31 consecutive starts since his freshman season), the athleticism (4.93 40-yard dash), the length (34-inch arms with an 84 1/4-inch wingspan) and the smarts (had offers from Ivy League schools coming out of high school) that put him squarely in contention to be the first offensive tackle selected in the 2022 NFL Draft. An honorary member of Bruce Feldman's 2021 college football "Freaks List," Ekwonu reportedly reached a top speed over 18 miles per hour during practice (via GPS player-tracking technology), a mark we can contextualize with Next Gen Stats player-tracking data from the pros. Only one NFL offensive lineman reached a top speed over 18 miles per hour on any play from scrimmage over the course of the entire 2021 season: Saints guard (and 2020 first-round pick) Cesar Ruiz hit 18.33 mph chasing down an opposing ball-carrier on a strip-sack play in Week 9 against the Falcons.) 2022 NFL Draft: Malik Willis tops players with star potential (8. IKEM EKWONU, OT, NC STATE: The menacing presence and nightclub bouncer attitude that show in Ekwonu’s play complement his incredible combination of athleticism, strength and power. Measuring 6-foot-4, 320 pounds with 34-inch arms, Ekwonu moves defenders off the ball and finishes with an intensity that creates a bully-ball mentality throughout the squad. With Ekwonu’s ultra-aggressive game and demeanor certain to create an intimidation factor around the league, this big-bodied bully could become a household name in a hurry.) 2022 NFL Draft: Offensive line prospect superlatives (BEST ZONE SCHEME BLOCKER: IKEM EKWONU, NORTH CAROLINA STATE - This one comes straight from the grades (and to be fair, it checks out with the eyes, as well). Ekwonu earned a 98.6 PFF grade on 225 zone run-blocking snaps last season. Don’t get it twisted, this big monster isn't a phone booth player. He can get out on the move and surprise opponents with how quick he gets on them. His 15 big-time blocks on zone runs were the most for a tackle in the FBS. MOST POWERFUL: IKEM EKWONU, NORTH CAROLINA STATE - This shows up in every single thing Ekwonu does. A lot of guys are strong, but not many are strong, flexible and explosive the way Ekwonu is. He puts strength into action on the football field by consistently sending shockwaves into defenders.) (4-11-22): https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2022-nfl-draft-superlatives-offensive-line-prospects

Five prospects who could go No. 1 in 2022 NFL Draft; plus, Kyle Hamilton's 40 and Todd Bowles' second try (Ekwonu: There aren't many 6-foot-4, 310-pounders walking the Earth with the tools that Ekwonu puts on display between the lines. As a monstrous edge blocker with long arms and a nasty disposition, the N.C. State standout acts like a nightclub bouncer throwing out unruly patrons. He mauls defenders at the line of scrimmage in the run game; his exceptional finishing skills really stand out on tape. Ekwonu is a bully on the edges, and his nasty temperament is a culture setter for the O-line room. While he remains a work in progress as a technician, it is hard to bypass an exceptional athlete (SEE: 4.93-second 40-yard dash) with ideal dimensions. In a league that still views offensive tackle as a marquee position, Ekwonu's dominance on the edges and overall potential make him a worthy candidate to go No. 1 overall.) 2022 NFL Draft: Biggest weaknesses for top 10 prospects (NC State OT Ikem Ekwonu
Biggest weakness: Dealing with counter moves - Ekwonu's highlight reel is of No. 1 overall-caliber. For real. As a run-blocker, he's going to mash people in the NFL out of the gate. Burst, balanced mobility, torque, it's all there. As a pass protector, the same completeness and confidence isn't quite as apparent with Ekwonu. Because he's such a capable athlete, his recovery skills are tremendous. Flat out, though, Ekwonu is a little susceptible to a quality inside pass-rushing move, which is strange, given how impressive his lateral quickness is. In general, his pass protection is behind his run-blocking, which is not ideal in today's NFL.) NC State 2022 NFL Draft Scouting Reports include Ikem Ekwonu, Emeka Emezie, and Zonovan Knight (Ikem Ekwonu, OL - Positives: Large, explosive, and violent lineman who is best in a smaller area. Quickly sets up off the snap, devastates opponents with a jolt of his hands, and destroys defenders at the line of scrimmage. Stays square, easily seals defenders from the action, and plays nasty football. Patient in pass protection, flashes footwork, and makes outstanding use of blocking angles. Keeps his head on a swivel, always looks for someone to hit, and dominates opponents. Blocks down and engulfs defenders altogether. Negatives: Not quick out to the second level and minimally effective blocking in motion. Struggles to adjust and isn’t agile. Has difficulty handling speedy, agile pass rushers. Analysis: Ekwonu is highly regarded in many areas of the draft world after he improved his game last season. Fundamentally sound, incredibly strong, and outstanding with his hands, he consistently obliterates opponents at the point of attack. I question his ability to hold down the left tackle spot in the NFL or even be used in anything other than a small area. I believe Ekwonu could be an exceptional power-gap lineman at guard or possibly right tackle.) NC State Pro Day 2022: Date, prospects, rumors, and more (Ikem Ekwonu, OT: Ikem Ekwonu‘s ascent has been truly astonishing. The NC State offensive lineman was a highly regarded talent coming into the season. But after a dominant campaign in ACC play, he rode his athleticism and tenacious style to top-32 conversation. Now, he’s a favorite to fall within the top 10 if he’s not the top tackle selected. Ekwonu tested at the NFL Combine and performed fairly well. At 6’4″, 310 pounds, with 34″ arms, Ekwonu ran a 4.93 40-yard dash and had a 29″ vertical and 108″ broad jump. He came away with a Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 8.31. Ekwonu could look to improve that at the 2022 NC State Pro Day, but he’s already in a good spot. More important for him will be the interviews, but he’s also highly regarded there.) TWENTYMAN: 5 pro days to watch this week (1. Alabama, Wed., March 30 - Who to watch: Who will be the first offensive tackle off the board? Will it be Alabama's Evan Neal or N.C. State's Ickey Ekwonu? Neal didn't take part in the testing at the Combine, so this is a big day for him and for teams who want to compare the measurables between him and Ekwonu, who had a really nice Combine performance.) Comparing top 2022 prospects to former draft busts (NC State OT Ikem Ekwonu
(Bust: Jason Smith): Smith was a compact, dancing bear at Baylor. As a converted tight end, his burst, mobility, and balance when finding contact down the line or at the second level made him an incredibly tantalizing prospect. Hailing from Art Briles' spread offense in Waco, Smith gave everything scouts wanted to see for the run game, but the pass-protection skills were relatively raw. While he never became a quality pass blocker in the NFL, concussions ultimately curtailed Smith's career. Ekwonu is much more dazzling on the move, using supreme natural torque-creating skills to move defenders all over the field. And he's certainly not bad as a pass protector. But the burst and agility are comparable to what Smith brought to the field in the NFL.) The 5 biggest winners from the 2022 NFL Combine (Ikem Ekwonu, T, NC State: “Ikey” showcased the upper-crust athleticism and smooth, gliding hips to stake his claim as 2022’s top overall pick. He wasn’t just one of the fastest linemen in Indianapolis; his work in the on-field drills showcased an innate ability to change direction without losing his center of balance, keeping his shoulders and hips on the same page to prevent pass rushers from gaining leverage and generating the kind of power that flattens defensive linemen on running plays.) All-Combine Team: Who crushed it at each position? (Ekwonu: Ekwonu posted a Next Gen Stats overall draft score of 91 and was clearly the best lineman of his group during the on-field drills. With Evan Neal choosing to sit on his (stellar) film and save his testing/drill work for the safe space of his pro day, Ekwonu certainly made the discussion regarding the draft's top tackle more interesting with his workout in Indianapolis. Do I think he's better than Neal? No. But with Neal sitting out, there wasn't a better tackle on the field Friday night.) His arms measured 34 inches, which is well above the generally accepted threshold. His athleticism tested off the charts and it began with a 4.93 second 40-yard dash. 2022 NFL Scouting Combine Winners and Losers by the Numbers: Offensive Positions (Potential No. 1 picks Ikem Ekwonu and Charles Cross participated in enough drills to qualify, though neither finished with impressive WAR predictions. NFL Combine winners and losers: Malik Willis, Jordan Davis impress ahead of 2022 NFL Draft (Willis, Olave, Wilson, Thornton, Watson, Ekwonu, Johnson, Davis, Wyatt, Walker, Cine, McCollum, Thibodeaux, Hutchinson, Pickett, Burks, Williams, Green, Johnson, Leal, Karlafitis, Wright) (3-7-22): https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-combine-winners-losers-2022-draft/gw36f22v50vucmqdiaautc2w
NFL draft: Winners and losers from the 2022 NFL scouting combine (North Carolina State OT Ikem Ekwonu - We understand why Alabama's Evan Neal chose not to work out; as the current favorite for the No. 1 overall pick, he might have had little to gain in doing so. But Ekwonu did his best to make a run at Neal for OL1 honors with a strong performance. We've told Ekwonu's fascinating story already, and it's no shock that talent evaluators were impressed behind the scenes with Ekwonu's intelligence, maturity and personality. His testing prowess was good (headlined by a 4.93-second 40), but his on-field performance was better. Ekwonu showed excellent footwork, quickness and reaction skills in the drills, and he likely will receive residual benefit from the play of Tristan Wirfs and Rashawn Slater early in their careers. Like them when they came out, the 6-4 Ekwonu's length has been questioned, but those fears feel nitpick-y after watching him work and dominate at tackle the past few seasons.) NFL Combine 2022: Winners and losers include Malik Willis, Tariq Woolen (Ikem Ekwonu, OT, NC State: From the minute that Ikem Ekwonu stepped up to the media podium on Thursday, he wowed everyone in attendance in Indianapolis. Officially 6’4″ and 310 pounds, the versatile and destructive prospect looked every inch the part of an NFL offensive tackle with arms bigger than most normal people’s legs. When he spoke, his words wooed. He talked about not just football, but he described his love of musical theater (among other topics). Then, he went onto the field and absolutely dominated. His 4.93-second 40-yard dash was one of the fastest among offensive linemen. His on-field drills were smooth and well-executed. Ekwonu was reminiscent of a dancing bear, yet he possesses the savagery oft associated with the aforementioned animal. He did this while his main opposition for OT1 — Evan Neal — watched from the sideline, helping Ekwonu’s cause as one of the winners from the 2022 NFL Combine.) The most impressive part of the night was when the N.C. State product took to the field for drills. His feet were barely touching the ground as he quickly pitter-pattered through coaching. Coming into the NFL combine, Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal was a heavy betting favorite to be taken No. 1 overall by the Jaguars. Ekwonu's performance, saddled by Neal's absence, could leave the door open for a shift in thinking.) The seven biggest winners from Day 2 of the 2022 NFL Combine (Ikem Ekwonu, OT, NC State: “Icky” was a darkhorse choice to be the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft early in the process. After showcasing the size and quickness to repel pass rushers and crush linebackers on the move, he could leave Indianapolis as the new favorite at 1-1. Ekwonu displayed fluid hips and the ability to change direction without grinding to a halt, instead gliding through his motions. He was one of the dozen to run a sub-5.0 40, clocking in just .05 seconds behind OL leader Dare Rosenthal. He also measured out with above average numbers in both the vertical and broad jumps. What’s being said nationally after offensive line class leaves NFL combine as fastest since 2003 (Charles Cross (Mississippi State) and Ickey Ekwonu (North Carolina State) also had strong showings. Combine winners & losers: Who impressed on Day 2? (WINNERS - Ickey Ekwonu: With Alabama's Evan Neal not working out during the combine, there was an informal competition between the other top-rated offensive linemen, Ekonwu and Mississippi State's Charles Cross. Both ran sub-5.0-second 40-yard dashes, but the former member of the Wolfpack gets the slight edge, staying low out of his stance and looking smooth and quick during the various pulling and pass protection drills. Ekwonu showed a strong punch and exhibited very good lateral agility in mirror drills and also flashed redirect skills when required. Measuring exactly 6-foot-4 might not meet the standards some teams have for the tackle position, but Tristan Wirfs and Rashawn Slater have shown that it is not smart to overlook outside linemen with average height.) (Ikem Ekwonu, OT, North Carolina State: Ekwonu came into the combine as a presumptive top-five pick, with some (including yours truly) believing that he was worthy of the first overall selection. He had nothing to prove after his 2021 season, but he did it all at the combine anyway, and probably raised his stock even higher. Not only did Ekwonu run an official 4.93 40-yard dash, but he also showed quick and efficient movement in everything from the pulling drills to the mirror exercises. 2022 NFL Combine: Day 1 Takeaways (Ekwonu, Neal share interesting stories - Though EDGE rushers have dominated the conversation when it comes to the top overall selections in the NFL Draft, a pair of offensive tackles have pitched their case. The duo, comprised of N.C. State’s Ikem Ekwonu and Alabama’s Evan Neal, spoke with media members Thursday. For Ekwonu, it was a chance to share his dabbling in musical theatre as a child. Though he’s currently considered to be among the top prospects, along with Neal, he believes he’s deserving of being the top selection in the upcoming draft. “It would mean a lot to me,” Ekwonu said. “I’ve worked really hard throughout all my years at N.C. State, and throughout the offseason. I wouldn’t be shocked if I went No. 1 overall. I feel like that is something I put the work in for. But whatever team ends up selecting him is also getting a talented guy off the field. 12 prospects who should dominate the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine (OT Ikem Ekwonu, North Carolina State: Ekwonu is the dark horse to be the Jaguars’ pick at No. 1 overall. With Evan Neal, the other prospect in contention for that spot, opting out of the drills, he could help himself with a strong display. The athletic ability of Ekwonu, a former recruit with a state championship under his belt as a wrestler and track runner at 285 pounds, should raise eyebrows. According to North Carolina State’s offensive line coach Dantonio Burnette, Ekwonu has hit 18 MPH on the GPS at practice and vertical jumped 30 inches, adding that he will run as fast as former Wolfpack first-round offensive lineman Garrett Bradbury, who clocked a 4.92 40 at the NFL Combine, per Feldman.) The 5 biggest names to watch at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine (3. Ikem Ekwonu, OT, North Carolina State - Ekwonu has risen from three-star high school prospect to potential top overall pick — that’s where ESPN’s Mel Kiper slotted him in his latest mock draft. He’s a big, mean and versatile mauler who can play anywhere on the line and deliver results. He was a freshman All-American in 2019 and then a unanimous selection to the real thing after dominating the ACC in 2021. That could be enough to push him past Alabama’s Evan Neal (-140) and Mississippi State’s Charles Cross (+3000) to be the first lineman off the board, but he’ll need to perform well at the Combine to get there. Ekwonu (+270) is slightly smaller than Neal at 6’4, 320 lbs. and lacks the refined technique of Cross. In order to set himself apart, he’ll have to prove he has the strength and speed to translate his pancake blocking to the NFL even as he learns to lunge less and keep his shoulders and hips on the same page at all times. Ekwonu already has the “destroy everything in sight” mentality NFL coaches crave. Showcasing elite athleticism and strength would make his potential too tempting to pass up. While the workouts at the Combine don’t mean much to an offensive lineman’s repertoire, the former NC State standout can set himself apart from the pack with big showings on the bench and in the three-cone drill.) 2022 NFL Combine: Malik Willis, Aidan Hutchinson top ones to watch (How should scouts sort out the offensive tackle cluster of Evan Neal, Ikem Ekwonu and Charles Cross at the top of the board? Protecting the quarterback is always the No. 1 priority in a league governed by QB play. The 2022 class features a number of blue-chip prospects at the top of the board, but scouts will need to spend the next few months determining which players are the best fits for their respective offenses. If a team desires a long, rangy edge blocker with flawless technique, Alabama’s Evan Neal could tickle their fancy. The 6-foot-7, 350-pounder is a talented technician with balance, body control and hand skills to stymie explosive pass-rushers off the edge. In addition, he flashes enough strength and power to move defenders in the running game. Teams looking for a bully on the block will fall in love with NC State’s Ikem Ekwonu. The 6-foot-4, 320-pound Ekwonu plays the game like a nightclub bouncer removing unruly patrons with brute force and a no-nonsense attitude. As a mauler/brawler with an unrefined game, he plays an ugly brand of football that will make some offensive line coaches squeamish. Talent developers, however, will appreciate his natural talents and grade him on his potential to blossom into an all-star in the right scheme. Cross is a pass-protecting freak with superb balance, body control and anchor. Measuring 6-foot-5, 300 pounds with quick feet, the Mississippi State product is a perfect fit for an offense that wants to throw the ball around the yard. Cross is as polished as they come in the passing game, with a variety of tools and techniques that enable him to effectively shadow and mirror pass-rushers on the edges. He has an extensive résumé of handling every pitch pass-rushers throw off the edge, and his shutout potential could make him the top choice for pass-happy teams searching for a franchise tackle on draft day. With so many styles and body types at the top of the board, the combine will give evaluators a chance to determine the proper order for their respective teams and schemes. In addition, the interview will give scouts and coaches some insight into football intelligence, personality and locker room fit. Given the importance of chemistry and continuity within the offensive line, this week will play a major role in determining how these prospects will come off the board in the first round.) 2022 NFL combine: Detroit Lions should be feeling pretty set despite solid offensive line class (OT Ikem Ekwonu (North Carolina State): The Athletic’s Dane Brugler had Ikem Ekwonu at Pick 1 in his first mock draft. Ekwonu is a monster on the ground. The 6-foot-4, 320-pounder is a former high school wrestler. He’s ready to go for run-game duties while needing a little patience in pass protection. He played most of his snaps at left tackle over the last three years while drawing 239 reps at left guard in 2020.) 2022 NFL Draft: Pros and Cons for PFF's top five offensive tackles (3. IKEM EKWONU, NORTH CAROLINA STATE WOLFPACK
(PFF Big Board Rank: 13): Pros: Ekwonu is the biggest bully in college football. Defenders don't want to see him coming their way. His long arms pack a punch. If he's latched onto your pads, good luck. The 320-pound monster has incredible power in his lower half and legs like tree trunks. Cons: His pass sets are wholly inconsistent and unpolished. He almost clicks his heels. Ekwonu didn't even take vertical sets, just angle sets. He has OK agility and mirror ability, but they are not high-end for the position.) Should Lions Draft OL Ikem Ekwonu with Pick No. 2 in 2022 NFL Draft? (3. IKEM EKWONU, NORTH CAROLINA STATE (Strength: Tenacity, Weakness: Center of Gravity): Ekwonu seemingly burst onto the scene this season, but he’s been playing at a high level since his true freshman season of 2019, just like Neal. His career started in Week 3 that year when he saw snaps against West Virginia, and it’s been smooth sailing ever since. A 78.9 grade was followed by an 80.6 grade the next season before finishing his career at 91.6 in 2021. Ekwonu stands out as a tenacious run-blocker who absolutely mauls defenders all the way to the whistle on every snap. The issues come in the pass protection realm. Ekwonu can sometimes lean into pass rushers and lose his center of gravity. Better pass-rushers will be able to get off an inside move or just snatch him and take his body where it's already leaning and get by him. He was able to immobilize a lot of pass-rushers doing this, but it remains to be seen whether NFL veterans will use it against him. 2022 NFL Draft Position Rankings: Offensive Tackles (2. IKEM EKWONU, NC STATE (BIG BOARD RANK: 6): The single most dominant run-blocking tackle in the country. Top NFL draft prospects in every 2021-22 college football bowl game (OT IKEM EKWONU, N.C. STATE - Ekwonu is firmly in the mix to be one of the top tackles selected in April’s draft. Ranking the 25 best prospects in the 2021 & 2022 NFL Drafts (17. 2022 OT IKEM EKWONU, N.C. STATE - Ekwonu is neck-and-neck with Neal for OT1 in the 2022 draft class. While Neal was No. 1 on Bruce Feldman’s Freak’s List, Ekwonu’s tape is somehow more physically dominant. He doesn’t possess Neal's quickness, but he plays with more brute strength than any lineman in the country as only a true junior.) College Football Team of the Week: Purdue QB Aidan O’Connell delivers against Michigan State (LT: Ikem Ekwonu, NC State - The big man on the left side for the Wolfpack dominated the action in Tallahassee against FSU. Ikem Ekwonu was a stalwart in pass protection and dominant in the rushing game. He kept Jermaine Johnson II quiet when they matched up and had a tackle on a once-promising interception return for FSU to boot.) College Football Week 10: Next-level prospects to watch (Opinions on North Carolina State offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu are all over the place. Many outside of the scouting community grade him as a top-45 overall prospect at left tackle. However, most inside the scouting community have him as a Day 3 guard — right where I place him. Saturday’s contest against the resurgent Florida State Seminoles will go a long way in determining who is correct. Ekwonu will face Seminoles pass rusher Jermaine Johnson II in the midst of a breakout campaign. Johnson is having a sensational season posting 11 tackles for loss, 8 sacks, and 4 QB hits. The Georgia transfer also sits second on the FSU defense with 49 total tackles in eight games. If Ekwonu can contain the speed and quickness of Johnson, scouts may rethink the opinion he’s incapable of handling the left tackle spot on Sunday.) College Football Team of the Week: Tyler Van Dyke ushers in a new era for the Miami Hurricanes (LT: Ikem Ekwonu, NC State - The late ACC game of the night was treated to a vintage Ikem Ekwonu performance. Making our Team of the Week with power in the passing game and mauling in the rushing game, Ekwonu demonstrated the skills that will ultimately make him a highly drafted NFL player next April. He helped create ample time for Devin Leary to dissect Louisville’s defense for 317 yards and 4 touchdowns in the victory.) Top 10 Interior Offensive Linemen in the 2022 NFL Draft: Tyler Linderbaum takes center stage (3. Ikem Ekwonu, G, North Carolina State: NC State offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu is the epitome of a sheep in wolf’s clothing. On the outside, he lulls you in with a smiling demeanor astride his bespectacled face. On the inside (or rather on the football field), he’s a violent menace who takes pride and satisfaction in destroying whoever has the misfortune to be in his path. While he’s played offensive tackle for NC State this season, I firmly believe his future is inside. He has the makings of an elite guard prospect. And that is why he features on our top offensive linemen in the 2022 NFL Draft class. Ekwonu brings wrestling experience to the interior, allowing him to win with leverage. Despite this, he has enough sheer strength to win with power alone. Although we’ve placed him inside, Ekwonu has improved his pass protection as a tackle. With a vicious, powerful punch in pass protection and the ability to react with athleticism, Ekwonu is rounding out nicely as a 2022 NFL Draft prospect.) 2022 NFL Draft All-Prospect Team entering College Football Week 8 (LT: IKEM EKWONU, N.C. STATE - To unseat Alabama’s Evan Neal, one has to be playing at an elite level, which is precisely what we’ve seen from Ekwonu this year. His 94.0 overall grade is so far ahead of any starting tackle in the country that he had to be included on this list. After struggling in pass protection last year, Ekwonu has only allowed four pressures this season.) 2022 NFL Draft Rumors: Matt Corral and the latest on the QB1 battle (Multiple ‘experts’ have an early first-round grade on NC State offensive tackle/guard Ikem Ekwonu. What are your thoughts on where he might be drafted? I don’t see Ikem Ekwonu as a first-round prospect, never have. He’s a powerful college LT who projects as a guard for a power-gap system at the next level. He struggles to adjust, can’t handle speed rushers, and gave up a ton of sacks last season (7, I believe). Ekwonu is very good at what he does — burying opponents into the ground. Yet, the inability to move or cover any amount of area on the field won’t make him attractive come draft day.) (10-20-21): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-draft-rumors-2021-cfbwk-8/
College Football Week 4: Team of the Week honors (LT – Ikem Ekwonu, NC State: While it can often be hard to spot good offensive line play, other times it’s directly in your face. That’s the kind of football Ikem Ekwonu regularly plays, and it’s what he did against Clemson. In helping secure the upset, Ekwonu routinely dominated both pass- and run-blocking with his superior athleticism, strength, and speed combination.) Top guards and centers in the 2022 NFL Draft include Kenyon Green, Lecitus Smith (2. Ikem Ekwonu, NC State: Much like Green, Ikem Ekwonu has some positional versatility between tackle and guard. At the next level, however, he’s likely a guard. And if Ekwonu reaches his ceiling, he can be a scary assignment for opposing defensive linemen. At the college level, he already is. At 6’4”, 320 pounds, Ekwonu has a dense frame, which he compounds with strong proportional length. With explosion off the line and urgency in space, that length can be leveraged into devastating power. Ekwonu may already be one of the best run blockers in the NFL Draft, if not the best. His pass protection needs to improve, as his hands aren’t always the cleanest. Nevertheless, his sheer displacement potential is enough to place him high on this list.) Top 10 2022 NFL Draft prospects in the ACC (3. OT IKEM EKWONU, N.C. STATE (JUNIOR): Ekwonu is the definition of a road grader. You will not find many reps of him moving backward in one-on-one interactions. It’s why he’s earned 85.0 and 91.2 run-blocking grades as a freshman and sophomore respectively. While he’s played mostly left tackle in his career, Ekwonu looked like a better fit in his 239 snaps at left guard. He’s a phone booth type of player whose 25 pressures allowed last season are not going to fly when projecting to tackle.) (8-18-21): https://www.pff.com/news/draft-top-10-2022-nfl-draft-prospects-acc
Evan Neal, Aidan Hutchinson and more of PFF's top-50 2022 NFL Draft Prospects make Bruce Feldman's Freaks List (58. IOL IKEM EKWONU, N.C. STATE (25TH): One doesn’t rack up 10 big-time blocks as a true sophomore without some freak power. That’s precisely what Ewkonu possesses. If he truly does run faster than Garrett Bradbury’s 4.92, as suggested in the article, the 327-pound Ekwonu will have put up one of the most impressive 40s from an offensive lineman in NFL history.) 2022 NFL Draft: UNC's Howell, Clemson highlight ACC preview (Tackle Ikem Ekwonu is one of several offensive line prospects who have an ideal physical profile and the athleticism to become a really effective NFL player, but there is work to be done before he is considered a lock for the first round.) ACC Preseason All-Conference team ahead of 2021 college football season (Guard: Ikem Ekwonu, NC State: Strong enough to represent his high school in wrestling and intelligent enough to earn college offers from Harvard and Yale. Ikem Ekwonu is a dangerous offensive lineman wrapped up in a smiling, bespectacled outer disguise. The NC State guard is the archetypal wolf in sheep’s clothing. He will lure you in and destroy you as an absolute mauler at the heart of the Wolfpack offensive line. When you watch Ekwonu play, it confirms his reputation as the “most feared offensive lineman in the ACC.” His ability to finish a man into the ground is brutally sensational. Although he may see more time at offensive tackle this year, his play at guard is exceptional and fully justifies his inclusion in our ACC All-Conference team.) (7-16-21): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/acc-preseason-all-conference-team-2021/
2021 College Football Preseason All-Americans: Texas A&M dominate first-team honors (Guard: Ikem Ekwonu, NC State - Although Ikem Ekwonu earned second-team All-ACC honors at both guard and tackle last season, he makes first-team college football preseason All-American on the interior of the line. The NC State offensive lineman has been described as “the most feared offensive lineman in the ACC” after a series of sensationally brutal performances for the Wolfpack during the last two years. Ekwonu has the old-school mauler mentality on the line, wanting to finish every opponent into the dirt. Yet, he also brings an understanding of winning with leverage due to a wrestling background. Moreover, his courtship from Harvard and Yale are a testament to his intelligence. His performances at tackle are good, but his play at guard is exceptional.) The PFF Preseason College Football All-ACC Team: North Carolina QB Sam Howell starts at QB, Clemson's Justyn Ross earns WR spot
COLLEGE (First-Team: Ikem Ekwonu, NC State - Primarily playing left tackle for the Wolfpack in his two years on campus, dabbling at guard for a few games to start 2020, Ekwonu owns a 61.9 career pass-block grade with 15 combined sacks and hits allowed. That's not particularly impressive, but he's one of the best run-blockers in the country. Ekwonu's 92.1 run-block grade as an underclassman was the fourth-best mark among FBS tackles. And two of the three ahead of him are now in the NFL. North Carolina State deploys a zone rushing attack, with over three-fourths of the team's runs being such since 2019, and that’s where Ekownu is a true mauler. He is tied with Kentucky's Darian Kinnard for the most big-time blocks — PFF’s highest-graded plays for linemen — on zone runs over the past two seasons.) Early 2022 NFL Draft offensive line rankings and class overview (5. G IKEM EKWONU, N.C. STATE (JUNIOR): Even though he got kicked out to tackle midway through 2020, Ekwonu profiles best as a guard at the next level. What he’s capable of in the running game is unlike anything you typically see from a true sophomore. At 6-foot-4 and 325 pounds, Ekwonu simply doesn’t go backward. In two years as a starter, he’s earned run-blocking grades of 85.0 as a freshman and 91.2 as a sophomore. However, he’s still a massive work in progress in pass protection, as he allowed seven sacks and 25 total pressures in 2020. Some of that is obviously due to him kicking out to tackle, but he still allowed eight pressures in four games at guard.) 2022 NFL Draft Big Board: Early top 50 prospect rankings (37. Ikem Ekwonu, OL, NC State - On the suggestion of fellow draft analysts A.J. Schulte and Nick Farabaugh, Ikem Ekwonu was a late watch. And upon watching him, he was a late but necessary addition to the 2022 NFL Draft Big Board. Ekwonu stands at around 6-foot-4, 320 pounds. He has impressive length and lateral athleticism for that frame, but his most prevalent trait is his mauler mentality, which frequently stands out at the end of reps.)
