Walterfootball (2. Detroit Lions: DE Aidan Hutchinson: I've slotted Drake London here since the combine, and he was in the lead for the No. 2 pick. Then, Travon Walker became the favorite. Now, there's a chance Walker may not even be here, given that Jacksonville believes he has more upside than Aidan Hutchinson. If Walker is off the board, it sounds like Hutchinson will be the choice. Hutchinson has excellent potential, but we didn't get to see it very much last year because he suffered an ankle injury. 32. Detroit Lions: Jahan Dotson: The Lions were willing to entertain Drake London at No. 2 a few months ago, so they really need a receiver. Amon-Ra St. Brown is great, but the Lions have nothing else at the position. Jahan Dotson caught 52 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in just nine games in 2020. The 5-11 receiver made a big leap in production from the previous year. 34. LB Nakobe Dean: can't remember the last time the Lions had consistently great linebacker play. Perhaps they'll use this pick to rectify this issue. Nakobe Dean is an athletic and instinctive linebacker. 65. CB Coby Bryant: It's obvious to say that the Lions have a need at cornerback because they have a need at every position. Coby Bryant made some clutch shots, I mean interceptions during the 2020 season. He has some speed concerns. 97. DT Eric Johnson: The Lions have problems on the defensive line, so they're expected to address the area in Rounds 2-4. 177. Detroit Lions: Matt Waletzko, OT, North Dakota - Taylor Decker has been the subject of some trade rumors, so the Lions may draft a tackle. 181. S Delarrin Turner-Yell: The Lions brought in more safeties to top-30 visits than any other position. 217. LB Devin Harper: The Lions could obtain linebacker help earlier than this, but they have so many needs.) (4-28-22): https://walterfootball.com/draft2022.php
Walter football Charlie (2. Detroit Lions: DE Aidan Hutchinson - I believe Detroit will take Aidan Hutchinson or Travon Walker, whichever one the Jaguars pass on. The Lions could use another edge rusherm and Hutchinson is a very safe pick to turn into a quality starter for them. Hutchinson (6-3, 261) has quality size for the next level, is a good athlete, has quickness, and displays a pretty good get-off. He plays hard and gives relentless effort as a pass rusher. With his speed, athleticism, and hand usage, Hutchinson is a hard-charging, dangerous pass rusher who harasses the quarterback for four quarters. In the ground game, Hutchinson is sufficient. He wants to win with suddenness and athletic ability to knife through by moving and slanting. As a run defender, he can find the ball and use his quickness and athleticism to make plays. He does not, however, seem to want plays to be run right at him, and sources feel his run defense is alarming when teams go straight at him. He could be a base end in a 4-3 or a 3-4 edge rusher. In 2021, Hutchinson recorded 62 tackles, 14 sacks, three passes batted, a fumble recovered and two forced fumbles - another one was mistakenly given to a teammate. Hutchinson was excellent to open 2020, collecting 13 tackles and a pass batted before going down with an ankle fracture that required surgery. He broke out as a sophomore for the Wolverines as a tough defender who flashed pass-rush ability. In 2019, he had 68 tackles with 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. 32. WR Christian Watson: The Lions need a third receiver to go with D.J. Chark and Amon-Ra St. Brown. The Tampa, Florida native Watson was a good player for the Bison, but he set his draft stock on fire with an excellent Senior Bowl. The 6-foot-4, 211-pounder showed good speed and run-after-the catch ability to go along with mismatch size. In 2021, Watson caught 43 passes for 800 yards and seven touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown with 114 yards on 15 carries. Watson showed big-play ability in 2020 - 24.3 yards per catch - and 2019 - 21.5 yards per catch. 34. LB Nakobe Dean - The Lions need a long-term difference maker at linebacker, and Dean is a great fit for the character, intangibles, and team-first culture that is being cultivated in Detroit. Dean is a dangerous blitzer who comes up with splash plays in the clutch. Some team sources, however, have him graded lower than the media hype suggests because of the routine plays where Dean was not a forceful run defender. Still, Dean could be a first-round pick given the 2022 NFL Draft's weak linebacker class. He is good in coverage, smart, a great leader, instinctive, and a pure football player. In 2021, Dean collected 72 tackles, six sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and six passes defended. He had 71 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 2020. Dean (5-11, 225) is a quick, athletic linebacker with rare interior blitzing skills. He has a lot of upside to develop and should be a team leader early in his career. 66. DE Josh Paschal: Detroit continues to build up their defensive line. Paschal (6-2, 270) was solid for Kentucky in 2021. He had a lot of impressive games for the Wildcats. Paschal is a tough run defender who can contribute some pass rush. In 2021, Paschal had 52 tackles, five sacks and one forced fumble. Paschal worked out well this spring and has tremendous football character and leadership. He can be a base end that also moves inside in the sub package. 97. S Bryan Cook (COMPENSATORY PICK): As I reported months ago, the Lions were likely to get a compensatory pick for losing Kenny Golladay in free agency last year, and they ended up getting pick No. 97. DeShon Elliot was a nice bargain signing, but Detroit could use a long-term safety to go with Tracy Walker. Cook was a good contributor for the Bearcats in 2021, totaling 96 tackles, one sack, two interceptions and nine passes defended. He flashed in other seasons, including four interceptions in 2017. The 6-foot-1, 210-pounder has good size for the NFL. 177. S JT Woods: The Lions could use a couple of competitors at safety for starting competition and depth. 181. Brian Asamoah, LB, Oklahoma: The Lions take a backup linebacker and special teams contributor. 217. Hassan Haskins, RB, Michigan: The Lions take a backup running back who could help on special teams.) (4-28-22): https://walterfootball.com/draft2022charlie.php

Detroit Lions — DE Aidan Hutchinson: Few will celebrate their pick more than the Lions, who get the benefit of selecting the consensus top player in the draft who played ball right down the road. Maybe more than that, he's the perfect new face of the franchise and a real difference-maker in a division featuring plenty of QBs that you have to chase around. 32. WR Treylon Burks: Burks' ability to rack up yards after the catch will endear him to the Lions brass and help him turn into a quality option for a team that could benefit from his slipperiness in the screen game.) CFN (2. Detroit Lions - DE Travon Walker: Walker seems like he’s more speculation for a top two spot – or the No. 1 overall choice – more than being one of the two best prospects in this draft. But the Lions need an end, and Walker has the size and upside to be fantastic – even if the proven pass rush isn’t there. – 2022 Detroit Pre-Draft Analysis. 32. Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams)
QB Desmond Ridder: There are a few things happening here. First, there are a TON of great value talents still on the board. Second, if the Lions really want to go quarterback – I’m not totally convinced that they do – they’ll have a few options with the second pick in the second round.N But it’s not possible to make a mock draft pick happen. This is about projecting and predicting, and the smart move is to get the quarterback in the first if that’s where they really are going. – 2022 Detroit Pre-Draft Analysis. 34. DetroitLions.com (Tim Twentyman Picks.
No. 2: Edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson - This would be a perfect match of best player available and fitting a need for GM Brad Holmes at the top of the draft. Hutchinson has position versatility due to his size and skillset, and that will come in handy as Detroit transitions to a 4-3 base defense this season. He's got an advanced tool box of pass-rush moves and a motor that never quits. He should instantly assist Detroit's ability to affect the quarterback. No. 32: Safety Daxton Hill - The more a player can do, the more valuable he is, and that's really one of Hill's greatest assets. He's a hybrid safety/nickel with rare speed (4.38) and explosiveness. He can play one of the split safety spots in Detroit, but also come down and play in the box or at the nickel corner spot. He can cover tight ends, running backs and receivers. He's also got great ball skills. The Lions re-signed Tracy Walker and signed veteran DeShon Elliott in free agency, but Elliott is on a one-year deal and the Lions don't have a ton of experience at safety after those two. Hill could be a great addition at the end of the first round. Editor's Picks. No. 2: Edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux - I wouldn't be mad at safety Kyle Hamilton or fellow edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson here, but in this mock I'm assuming Hutchinson is off the board at 1 to the Jaguars. No. 2 isn't too high to take Hamilton in this draft, but I think the Lions need to snag one of the top two pass rushers while they can. Hopefully they can address safety a little later on in the first round ... No. 32: Safety Daxton Hill - Looks like we're three-for-three on Hill. I haven't had much luck predicting Michigan picks in the past, but this one would make a lot of sense. I imagine Lions fans would be pretty happy coming out of Day 1 of the draft with two impact players on defense.) He's the best player in this class and talk that he has already reached his ceiling is just that. He's 21 and he's only going to get better. 32. QB Sam Howell: There's been some media chitchat about the Lions targeting Malik Willis at No. 2 and that feels a little too rich. Instead, they're more likely to trade up from here (Detroit also has the 2nd pick in Round 2) for a passer. Who that passer might be is another matter. It could be Desmond Ridder, or Matt Corral, but we're going with Sam Howell, who has flown under the draft-media-hype-train radar for much of the last two months but he's our QB2. We'd love the pick here and he has some Matthew Stafford gunslinger in him but he's a better athlete.) He is a good football player who does fit the character mold that leadership is attempting to create. Detroit has a few foundational pieces with Romeo Okwara and Hutchinson on defense. If Jeff Okudah can stay healthy and take the next step forward, there are reasons to be excited about the Lions defense. 32. S Lewis Cine: Cine is great value at this stage of the first round. No. 32 overall is going to be valuable for a team to potentially move up and take a quarterback to gain that fifth-year option. Lions – Aidan Hutchinson: I have them taking Liberty QB Malik Willis in many prior versions of this exercise and they have gone so out of their way to try to dimmish their intent to take a QB at 2 – or even their need at QB – that I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them actually grab one here. However, they grab the local product in this top 10, and league sources have continued to indicate to me that it is more likely the Lions snag a QB at pick 32, or move up a bit from there to do so. 32. QB Matt Corral: I continue to hear that the Lions are targeting QB with this pick to get the fifth-year option. I don't buy anything Dan Campbell said about not needing a legit QB. PFF Collinsworth (2. DETROIT LIONS: EDGE AIDAN HUTCHINSON, MICHIGAN: If Hutchinson is there, they will draft the hustling Michigan product to stay home. However, quarterback, edge or cornerback would not surprise. Malik Willis is the most gifted of the QBs, but he is far from ready to play despite his great upside. I could see the Lions loving Willis' playing style and hoping they could teach the rest while he develops. However, I could also see them loving Sam Howell just as much, and they might get him in the second round. 32. DETROIT LIONS (VIA LAR): QB SAM HOWELL, NORTH CAROLINA: If the Lions pass on Malik Willis at Pick No. 2 and get Sam Howell at Pick No. 32, this will have been one great draft for them. Both Howell and Willis are projects, but Howell brings that same tough running style with a big arm that Willis does. And at Pick 32, there is much less risk. The North Carolina product will look like Tim Tebow to fans, but he is a better passer. He has quick feet in the run-pass option game. He will need to tighten up his motion, but he had a 68% completion percentage his first two years before that dropped to 61.5% last year without his top receivers.) NFL Real GM (2. Lions: Aidan Hutchinson, EDGE, Michigan - Hutchinson is absolutely a Dan Campbell kind of player with fantastic athletic ability, football smarts and a Detroit native to boot. If Hutchinson goes at No. 1, I’d bet on Kayvon Thibodeaux here. It very well could be Thibodeaux even if Hutchinson is here. Anyone else would be a big surprise. 32. Lions: S Lewis Cine. Howell was here until the final minute, with Cine at 34. I switched it more on the premise that I see Cine being a more consensus first-round pick than Howell and the realistic chance the Jaguars would take Cine in between the picks. USA Today Middlehurst-Schwartz (2. Lions – DE Aidan Hutchinson: Would the hometown prospect long seen as the front-runner for the top spot make for an open-and-shut case for the Lions? With his abundant athleticism and relentless motor, Hutchinson seems like exactly the kind of prospect that coach Dan Campbell would covet. Even if he never becomes the outright "game-changer" that general manager Brad Holmes is seeking in this slot, the 6-7, 260-pounder could still spark the Lions' rebuild by becoming a cornerstone of the defense. 32. Lions (from Rams) – S Lewis Cine: Another hard-charging vocal leader for the defense should make Detroit's brain trust joyful with its first-round haul. SN Iyer (2. Detroit Lions - DE Aidan Hutchinson: The Lions also feel like they're going for defensive impact and the decision for Brad Holmes, Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn will be made easy should Hutchinson be still available after the Jaguars take Walker. Hutchinson is relentless and explosive and can be downright dominant, taking over games at times with his pass rush skills. 32. QB Desmond Ridder: The Lions have been thinking more about quarterback in the first round and Ridder being available here would be almost a no-brainer. Ridder's experience, leadership, strong arm and sometimes dazzling athleticism provides the welcome makeup for their new franchise passer to replace Jared Goff. 34. DE David Ojabo: The Lions should strongly thinking about stashing Hutchinson's high-upside teammate even if they land Hutchinson at No. 2 overall. They can afford to be patient with the explosive and relentless Ojabo returning from a ruptured Achilles' suffered at Michigan's pro day. He can start out as a rotational option behind Hutchinson and Charles Harris. 66. WR George Pickens: The Lions could also think more defense here but it's also not bad to add an extra weapon. Pickens' speed and physicality would fit well with D'Andre Swift, Amon-Ra St. Brown, D.J. Chark and T.J. Hockenson. 97. The pairing of player and team makes sense on paper. 32. Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams): QB Sam Howell: The buzz around Sam Howell to the Detroit Lions in this spot has been increasing in recent days. While the Lions might have more pressing needs, such as safety, in this spot, the ability to add a quarterback and secure the fifth-year option is enticing. Sam Howell throws the deep ball well and added production as a runner last season, showing that he has more to offer than just nine balls downfield. With Jared Goff in place the Lions can take their time with him, and since Detroit has a pick at the top of the second round, they can address a need such as safety early with either Jaquan Brisker or Lewis Cine at the top of day two.) FTW D'Andrea (2. Detroit Lions (3-13-1): DE Kayvon Thibodeaux (Team needs: WR, DE, LB, CB, S, QB): The Lions hold the key to how the rest of the first round unfolds. Will they reach for a quarterback to take over for Jared Goff? Bulk up a pass rush that ranked 30th in sacks last fall? Address a secondary that ranked 30th in passer rating allowed? But Detroit has the assets to either take a second-tier quarterback at No. 32 or trade up if someone from the first tier (Malik Willis, Kenny Pickett) slips. And the No. 2 overall pick is a hefty price for a defensive back who won’t impact the game on every snap he plays. Instead, the Lions can roll with Thibodeaux, who has slipped down some draft boards this spring for reasons I don’t fully understand but recently rebounded to become a betting favorite at second overall. The Oregon defensive end is built like a prototypical pass rusher and has all the athletic attributes of a three-down difference maker at the next level. Though his 2021 wasn’t the breakthrough some scouts expected, he still set a career best in sacks per game (seven in 10 contests). Thibodeaux is a full-stop monster capable of torturing NFC North quarterbacks for a decade. He’s exactly what Dan Campbell needs as he works to reverse fate in Detroit. 32. Detroit Lions (3-13-1, via Los Angeles Rams): QB Matt Corral (Team needs: WR, DE, LB, CB, S, QB): It turns out the Steelers’ aggression doesn’t affect the Lions here; Corral has been my pick at No. 32 throughout this process. He remains the guy in my final mock draft as well. Corral’s willingness to look downfield and throw crisp deep balls would provide a welcome escape plan from Jared Goff’s check-down nonsense. While his 2021 didn’t reach the dizzying heights of his breakthrough 2020, he showcased better decision-making and the ability to cut back on stupid risks in order to become a more efficient passer. He’s also an exciting runner capable of outmaneuvering pressure, extending plays and creating magic. He also has a tendency to save his best stuff for big moments: 10 of his 11 games with 300+ passing yards the past two seasons came against Power 5 opponents. 34. Detroit Lions: S Daxton Hill, Michigan (Team needs: WR, DE, LB, CB, S, QB): It might be hard for Detroit to pass up Minnesota pass rusher Boye Mafe here. Fortunately for Hill, the Lions have already picked up an EDGE guy this draft. The Wolverine standout gets to stay in-state and is an athletic safety capable of handling slot corner duties as well. No matter where he ends up he’ll be erasing mistakes in Dan Campbell’s defensive backfield.) (4-28-22): https://ftw.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-mock-draft-final-2022-aidan-hutchinson-travon-walker
Draft Tek (2. DE Aidan Hutchinson: Well, who saw this coming? After weeks, even months of speculation that Aidan Hutchinson would likely be selected #1 overall, that's not so much of a guarantee any longer as Georgia's Travon Walker is beginning to catch fire in the rumor mill. Hutchinson has been the player I've hoped Detroit is in a position to select for quite some time now, and as these rumors about Walker begin to trend more credible by the day, the more and more confident I become in mocking Hutchinson here at #2 overall. Lions' fans can only hope that this comes true come draft day as this pick becomes very murky given the available field of players if Hutchinson is selected #1 overall (Thibodeaux, Hamilton, Ekwonu, Willis). All of the aforementioned players come with a downside for Detroit, whereas Hutchinson seems to be the perfect fit. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst 32. QB Kenny Pickett: There have been some rumblings that Kenny Pickett has been rumored to be linked with the New Orleans Saints, and why not? As they continue to search for their replacement to Drew Brees, Pickett would be available to them at #19. However, in our mock, New Orleans has gone with WR Treylon Burks (not a bad selection at all) to add more weaponry for whoever ends up the starter in 2022, Jameis Winston or Andy Dalton. No matter how the draft shakes out, there's plenty of young QBs that are worthy of taking here at #32 to sit behind Goff for a year, maybe two, to learn the ropes of being a competent NFL caliber QB, Pickett being one of them. As I said in our last mock, there's truly no rush as Goff is under contract until 2024 and to cite Keyshawn Johnson's recent comments on Goff and the Lions, he does have a point; Provide Goff true NFL caliber weapons and a sound defense and let's see what happens. To draft a QB to take his job after one year, may be irresponsible. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst. 34. LB Nakobe Dean. 66.

MLive Raven (2. DE Kayvon Thibodeaux: It all comes down to Kayvon Thibodeaux. The Oregon pass rusher looks to have all the potential you want in such a highly-drafted edge defender. The scrutiny surrounding some of the perceived knocks to his game has been strange. Sure, there are moments where he could have done something more. Maybe that’s youth, frustration, an injured ankle or a combination of each. But he comes with elite production and hard-to-miss natural ability. Thibodeaux finished with 19 sacks and 35.5 tackles for loss across 30 games at Oregon. He ended his junior season winning 23.2% of his pass rushes while creating 48 pressures. Thibodeaux worked through an ankle injury at the beginning of the year, and those don’t easily vanish at his size, especially when returning to double and triple teams. This elite pass rusher can be as good as he wants to be at the next level. Thibodeaux hasn’t tapped into anything resembling an arsenal of moves, making it easy to assume there’s room to grow. He also has something you can’t teach in that get-off. He’s large, long and fast. He’s confident when he speaks about himself and the game. What makes him an intriguing prospect is that he’s looked this good without fully tapping into those dominant traits. You want a next-level pass rusher with such a highly-drafted edge defender. Thibodeaux is that dude. 32. Detroit Lions -- Georgia WR George Pickens: George Pickens remains the selection here. He fills a need and projects as a fit on every level around these parts. He’s one of my favorite receivers in this class and would be off the board much earlier if it weren’t for that ACL injury last spring. Pickens is as physical and polished as they come at his position. His burners aren’t going to blow anyone away. But Pickens can get open and make contested catches, and he’s going to smile while hammering defensive backs. Pickens measures 6-foot-3, 195 pounds. He ran a 4.47-second 40-yard dash. He’s something this team needs, with DJ Chark here long-term or not. It wouldn’t be shocking to see him go earlier. But, if he’s on the board? Draft Pickens.) Seen by most as the top player in the draft, Hutchinson is exactly what the Lions organization is seeking as they continue to build the franchise the way GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell want, adding great players who hold themselves accountable in every way. The expectation will be for Hutchinson to notch double-digit sacks each season. 32. QB Kenny Pickett: This has been a QB landing spot in my prior attempts to decipher this draft, and while it's very tempting to go with a defender here, it would be a wonderful place for Pickett to learn behind Jared Goff. Going QB at No. 32 means Detroit will have the fifth-year option in play with Pickett's rookie contract. That said, don't overlook the fact that Georgia linebacker Nakobe Dean would be a perfect fit for the culture head coach Dan Campbell is trying to establish.) Detroit Lions – DE Aidan Hutchinson, Michigan: The Wolverines star and Plymouth, Michigan, native seems like a perfect match for his local NFL team ... though you wonder if the Jags might try to pry a pick out of the Lions to do a 1-2 flip first. But Hutchinson could be the needed face of a franchise that lacks one while juicing up a pass rush that produced just 30 sacks in 2021 and no longer has DE Trey Flowers. 32. Lions (from Los Angeles Rams) – DE/OLB David Ojabo, Michigan: What could be better than one Wolverines pass rusher in Detroit? Two, naturally. Ojabo and Hutchinson combined for 25 sacks in 2021, the former exploding for 11 while seeing significant snaps for the first time. A native of Nigeria who grew up in Scotland, he had one tackle as a sophomore in 2020, so a bit of an understatement to deem Ojabo raw. The 6-4, 250-pounder, who once seemed headed for the top half of Round 1, is also coming back from an Achilles injury suffered at his March pro day. But given he might have benefited from a limited role as a rookie anyway, why not invest in Ojabo here – ensuring you potentially have him for at least five seasons with the option year – and hope he and Hutchinson can recreate their Ann Arbor magic in Motown?) Too much is made of the Michigan stuff and Dan Campbell making the selection of "one of his guys" here. 32. Hutchinson was PFF’s top-graded draft-eligible FBS edge defender (94.5) last season, while Walker ranked 97th (70.5). Hutchinson is viewed as having a higher floor, while Walker could have a higher ceiling based on his elite testing traits. It’s worth mentioning Hutchinson also tested very well. 32. Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams): QB Kenny Pickett - Whether it's Detroit or another team moving up, I expect this pick to be spent on a quarterback due to the fifth-year option on contracts for players selected in the first round. MLive Meinke (2. Detroit Lions: Michigan DE Aidan Hutchinson: Hutchinson is not Nick Bosa. He’s not even Joey Bosa. But you’ve got to take somebody, and everyone has some kind of flaw. Hutchinson is probably the safest pick of them all, and especially for where the Lions is at right now in this rebuild. They’re desperate for help in their pass rush after finishing among the league’s worst yet again, and Hutchinson -- who had a school-record 14 sacks and 74 pressures last season -- is certainly that. But what really separates him is the character fit for Dan Campbell. You can read more about the fit in this explainer right here. 32. Detroit Lions: S Lewis Cine: I had the Lions taking Nakobe Dean here in 1.0, and there’s no doubt his speed would be a plus for that defense. But I do worry about his size, and whether Detroit might want more physicality out of that spot. Linebacker is a big need, but then again, so is safety, where the Lions have Tracy Walker and not much else. At 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds with 4.37 speed, Cine would pair very well with Walker on the back line of Detroit’s defense. He’s long, he’s fast, he hits hard, and he can play all over the defense. He was also a leader on that top-ranked Georgia defense, and those qualities are important to this regime. And with another pick lurking just two spots away, Detroit is still guaranteed to land a receiver like George Pickens (my favorite) or Jahan Dotson on Day 2.) With two more picks in the Top 34, they could continue to add on defense. 32. QB Matt Corral: He is a small quarterback who put up huge numbers in his last two seasons at Ole Miss. Corral led the FBS in total yards from 2020-2021. Though he is not as dynamic as Malik Willis, Corral is a dual-threat. He steps into a favorable situation as Jared Goff is replaceable and the Lions can dip into the deep wide receiver class with the second pick of round 2. If he replaces Goff at some point in 2022, I would expect growing pains for Corral and a downgrade for T.J. Hockenson and Amon-Ra St. Brown.) With freakish athletic ability and the potential to provide far more pass-rushing production in Detroit than we saw during his Georgia career, Walker fills a big need for the Lions. 32. QB Sam Howell: The presence of a capable starter in Jared Goff makes a QB selection here even more likely, at least in my eyes. Goff can be the bridge that allows a developmental process for a young QB. Plus, you get the extra season of cost control with the fifth-year option. Howell feels like Dan Campbell's kind of quarterback. It was easy to see his toughness when you watched him pinball off would-be tacklers in the run game this past season, especially against Miami. He's a physical runner and a talented passer -- in fact, our Hall of Fame quarterback, Kurt Warner, recently told me that he thinks Howell could end up as the best of this QB crop when all is said and done.) Putting aside the fact he’s from Michigan, Hutchinson embodies everything general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell are looking for as they continue to add building blocks to this roster. Assuming there’s no quarterback they love this early, the Lions rush to the podium for Hutch. 32. DETROIT LIONS: S LEWIS CINE, GEORGIA: The Lions could take a quarterback here to secure the fifth-year option, trade this pick to a different team wanting to do the same (similar to Teddy Bridgewater in 2014 and Lamar Jackson in 2018), or they could just keep the selection and add another building block to the roster. Cine brings toughness, and energy (Campbell/Holmes type of guy) and stands out as the best fit for a team that wants a playmaker on the back end of the defense.) NBC sports edge Froton (2. Detroit Lions - Kayvon Thibodeaux, Edge, Oregon: GM Brad Holmes had previously mentioned having talks about moving down from the number one pick but tamped down that speculation in his latest news conference. He did indicate that the team is looking for a “game-changer” with the selection, saying “I’ve said all positions, if that position is a quarterback…then it’s a quarterback.” I feel safe in saying there are no game-changing quarterbacks in this class, however, there sure will be in 2023 (Bryce Young, CJ Stroud). The Lions literally run to the podium if hometown boy Hutch is there, but in this scenario, I believe they select the next most impact Edge player in Kayvon Thibodeaux, who has seen his odds steadily increase over the past few weeks to where he’s actually the favorite now. His over/under was 5.5 at -110 to the under three weeks ago. Just this week he shot up to O/U 4.5 with the underpriced at -150. It doesn’t take a weatherman to know which way the wind blows on that play. 32. Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams) - Matt Corral, QB, Mississippi: Since Detroit opted to go with Kayvon Thibodeaux with the second overall selection, and Corral still remains as the best quarterback on the board, the Lions get their potential heir-apparent to Jared Goff after the former Ram and his ghastly contract is unceremoniously jettisoned following the 2022 season. This is one of the more logical fits in the first round, as Detroit will still have five years of team control due to Corral being selected in R1 instead of the four years they would get in R2. As is to be expected given the logic behind taking a quarterback with the last pick, Corral’s O/U is 32.5 (-110) and I think the under play here should pay off.) SN Camenker (2. Detroit Lions - Will pick: Travon Walker, EDGE, Georgia. Should pick: Travon Walker EDGE, Georgia. Dark horse: Drake London, WR, USC. It seems like the Lions are going to take whichever of the defensive ends that the Jaguars don't take. It's hard to argue with them taking Walker in this scenario, as Walker's athleticism (4.51 40-yard dash, 6.89 3-cone drill, 4.32 shuttle) gives him a very high ceiling. That gives him bust potential, but the Lions can take a chance on his upside as they continue to rebuild. If the Lions go in another direction, don't be surprised if they pursue a guy like London. They could use a true, No. 1 receiver and London has skills that are comparable to Mike Evans. They probably would look to trade down if they liked London enough to take him, but he's someone who is firmly on Detroit's radar. 32. Detroit Lions (from Rams) - Will pick: Nakobe Dean, LB, Georgia. Should pick: Lewis Cine, S, Georgia. Dark horse: Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss. Dan Campbell loves guys that play hard, fast and with an edge. He'll have a few options to choose from at this point, but his best come from the Georgia defense. The Lions have needs at every level of the field, but their linebacker position is in especially rough shape. The team has recent fourth-round pick Derrick Barnes and former free-agent signed Alex Anzalone at the position, but the rest of its depth consists of journeymen. Dean is a bit small at 5-11, 229 pounds, but he is a great athlete who can be a sideline-to-sideline playmaker. The same can be said of Cine, a hard hitter who had 73 tackles, nine pass defenses and an interception for Georgia last season. Cine is the exact time of kneecap-biter that Campbell craves, but the team's need at linebacker may be greater than its need at safety. Of course, the Lions could also take a gritty, tough quarterback like Corral to compete with Goff. Corral plays with a chip on his shoulder and might have been able to improve his draft stock if not for an ankle injury he suffered during Ole Miss' bowl game. Certainly, he loves football, and that will endear him to Campbell. It's worth noting that Detroit owns pick 34 as well as 32. So, if they like both defenders, they could take Corral. That would allow them to get a fifth-year option with him while knowing they will get one of Dean or Cine in the second round. If they like Corral and pass on him, they would lose that fifth-year option and could see a team trade up and select Corral ahead of them. Either way, keep an eye on a quarterback at this spot.) As bad as their secondary was, their pass rush needs another piece. Walker's athleticism and diversity to line up all over the place should pay off. His high-motor, high-character traits would mesh perfectly in Dan Campbell's locker room. 32. S Daxton Hill: See? The Lions drafted a Michigan product after all -- and a smart one with good speed. Hill figures to start right away at safety and can drop down to cover slot receivers as well. His NFL-ready game is much needed.) Peter King Mock (2. Detroit Lions: Aidan Hutchinson, edge, Michigan: “A real Dan Campbell player,” one NFL GM told me about the steadiest player in this draft. Campbell got a lot of people to chuckle when he talked about wanting players who want to bite kneecaps. It was his way of saying he wants guys who love football, who don’t take off plays, who won’t allow the Lions to be downtrodden anymore. Ask scouts about Hutchinson and they’ll tell you that’s how he played every one of his 43 career games in Ann Arbor. Hutchinson is a different cat. He’s been journaling—hand-writing, not typing—since he was 4. Some days he writes what he wants to be, he told me. “Just telling myself that I’m limitless,” he said. “I have an infinite mindset. I have no boundaries. There’s no mountain that I can’t reach. That’s how I view myself and me playing football.” Tell me Dan Campbell’s not going to froth at the mouth if GM Brad Holmes has the chance to draft this 6-6, 260-pound 10-year starter. Final note: Some late buzz about the Lions being smitten with Kayvon Thibodeaux and strongly considering him here. I just can’t see them passing on Hutchinson. Hamilton accumulated eight interceptions, 7.5 sacks and broke up 16 passes in his 31 games in college. 32. QB Malik Willis: Since the Detroit Lions selected the best player on defense, they now focus on the offense side of the ball and grab their quarterback for the future. Malik Willis will compete with current quarterback Jared Goff for the starting position, but will most likely learn from the six-year veteran. Willis has all the tools to be successful, an impressive arm and fantastic mobility with the ball in his hands. Lions edge defenders Romeo Okwara and Charles Harris — currently slated as the top two players on the edge after big-ticket free agent Trey Flowers was a cap casualty this offseason — are much better suited as Nos. 2 and 3 options, respectively. Detroit has one of the better offensive line units in the NFL, and unless it wants to get a head start at developing quarterback Jared Goff’s eventual successor, this pick is a no-brainer. 32. DETROIT LIONS (VIA LAR): QB Matt Corral: Almost every position for the Falcons is a need, as they comfortably have the worst roster in the NFL. While they could choose to prioritize other spots and prepare to pick very high in the 2023 NFL Draft, targeting Alabama quarterback Bryce Young or Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud among others, they move up here to secure the fifth-year option on Corral. Marcus Mariota, who is Atlanta's current presumed starter at quarterback, has a lengthy injury history and struggles to stay healthy almost every time he touches the field, especially when his legs are used as a weapon. Mariota’s rushing ability will have to be utilized if his wide receiver group consists of Olamide Zaccheaus, Damiere Byrd and Auden Tate. Corral can start on the bench but may be suiting up quite early in the 2022 season.) PFF Monson (2. DETROIT LIONS: EDGE KAYVON THIBODEAUX, OREGON (PFF MOCK DRAFT SIMULATOR Pick Grade: A-): I think the hype surrounding Walker is real, but any time I go back to the tape, I see a phenomenally good pass-rusher in Thibodeaux, who seems to be the target of a negativity campaign as the draft approaches. He possesses elite burst and twitchiness at the position and can win in a variety of different ways. Thibodeaux posted a 92.0 pass-rush grade against true pass sets this past season and a pass-rush win rate that doubled Walker's mark. We’re overthinking things right now, but the Lions won’t when they pick. 32. DETROIT LIONS (VIA LAR): WR TREYLON BURKS, ARKANSAS (PFF Mock Draft Simulator Pick Grade: B+): Burks is a confusing prospect. His workout numbers were average — even adjusting for his size — but his tape shows a consistently explosive playmaker who could have been even more productive with better quarterback play. His college role was a big departure from a conventional NFL receiver, and any team drafting him will need to have a plan to develop that, but the Lions can afford to take a chance on somebody who has that kind of upside to see what they can make of him.) He's an outrageous athlete who was wildly productive in college, and he plays one of the league's most important positions. He can be a game-changing player for Detroit's defense. 26
QB Desmond Ridder (mock trade with Titans): Detroit sees a quarterback fall within range of its second first-round pick, and moves up a few spots to go get him. He's a local kid and fills a big need as Detroit struggled to pressure the quarterback in 2021. 32. S Daxton Hill: If the Lions are going to select a quarterback at some point in this draft, taking Matt Corral at this spot may be the smart move simply to have the long-term security of the fifth-year option. If they decide to punt on the position altogether and roll with Jared Goff, safety is a need. Hill can line up all over the secondary, giving Detroit some much-needed versatility.) PFN Miller (2. Detroit Lions: Malik Willis: This, however, is not a foregone conclusion. There is no denying the Lions’ need for a long-term QB solution. Jared Goff isn’t good enough to compete for championships in his current form. Malik Willis would likely benefit from sitting behind Goff for a season, as his projection is a whole lot of raw talent that needs molding. But if Detroit believes he is a future franchise QB, no price is too high. 32. Detroit Lions: WR Jahan Dotson: Jahan Dotson is one of the most sudden receivers in the draft. He also has some of the softest hands in the class. He can play anywhere on the field and is a good complement to Amon-Ra St. Brown and DJ Chark. A year after having one of the most underwhelming receiving corps in league history, the Lions turn around and add enough talent to be respectable at receiver for 2022. 34. Detroit Lions: Nakobe Dean, LB, Georgia: Nakobe Dean falling out of Round 1 has less to do with his talent and more to do with team needs and positional value in the back half of Round 1. The Lions have lacked athleticism at linebacker for a long time. Although Dean didn’t test, his film speaks for itself. The Michigan game was exquisite. He was all over the place, making plays at and behind the line of scrimmage. Although he’s light for a linebacker, his frame is far from lean. He’s physical and sudden with great instincts for the position. 66. Detroit Lions - Troy Andersen, LB, Montana State. 97. In addition to GM Brad Holmes going to an Oregon game this fall, Detroit met with him at the combine and then had a large contingent at his pro day. Coach Dan Campbell is also a big fan, referring to Thibodeaux as an explosive athlete and playmaker who's "pretty special on tape." With Hutchinson off to Jacksonville, the Lions select the prospect who was at the top of most draft boards before the start of the 2021 college season. 32. NFL Rank (2. DE Kayvon Thibodeaux: Now, I would tell you guys to draft a quarterback because Jared Goff isn’t the answer. However, I'm not enamored with this class. Hold off. I'd go with Thibodeaux. He's got that swagger that might turn off a lot of teams, but that's the kind of player who would thrive under Dan Campbell. 32. QB Kenny Pickett: Look at what I did for you, Detroit! I told people to fade Pickett and now you get to swoop in here and grab your quarterback of the future. Again, if you want to pass on a quarterback and take another player, I’m good with it. But nabbing him at 32nd overall gets you that fifth-year option. Also, if some team doesn’t listen to me (not advised) and drafts Pickett sooner, you can take Matt Corral here. But I’d grab a QB with this pick. What, are you worried about Jared Goff’s feelings? Did the Packers care about Rodgers' feelings when they drafted Jordan Love? They did not. And it ended up with him having the best years of his career. Sure, they lost horrifically in the playoffs, but still, the best years of his career.) Fox sports McIntyre (2. Detroit Lions: DE Travon Walker: The steam is too much to ignore here, despite the Lions' sending seven reps to the Pro Day of Oregon edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux. Walker's measurables (6-foot-5, 275 pounds) don’t match the production (9.5 career sacks). Physically, he’s a taller Myles Garrett with longer arms and bigger hands. He ran a faster 40, too, but doesn’t have the athletic ability (vertical jump, broad jump). Walker started for only one year at Georgia, but he was athletic enough to cover kicks as a freshman. He was a five-star recruit and also a big-time high school basketball player. 32. Detroit Lions (via Los Angeles Rams): Desmond Ridder: Getting that QB locked up for a fifth year is key; just ask the Ravens and Lamar Jackson. All anyone remembers from Ridder’s great career is the disaster against Alabama. But he has reportedly crushed the interview process, and his body of work at Cincinnati — 87 passing TDs, 28 rushing TDs and, of course, his 44-6 record — wasn’t bad. I have flip-flopped Howell and Ridder in this spot, but for now, give it to the 22-year-old, four-year starter.) PFF Galina (2. DETROIT LIONS: DE Kayvon Thibodeaux: Kayvon Thibodeaux is the pick here because in most years he’s the player who might project the closest to what a true No. 1 overall pick should look like. He's long and explosive, but his tape and production never matched the lofty expectations he was given as the top overall recruit in the country as a high schooler. His ceiling is as high as anyone's in this draft. 32. DETROIT LIONS: S Jalen Pitre: With their next pick, the Lions select Baylor’s Jalen Pitre. If Pitre lives up to expectations, he’s really the modern-day Sam/nickel linebacker, a player who does not have to leave the field based on the offense's personnel grouping. 34. LB Leo Chenal: Slot coverage was a weak point for the Lions last season, with the team finishing 24th in slot coverage grade last season. AJ Parker handled most of those snaps and finished with a 58.7 coverage grade. Detroit needs a playmaker here, and Pitre could be a great pick. Meanwhile, linebacker Leo Chenal helps the Lions up the middle of their defense. This was another soft spot for them last year, especially against the pass, as they finished with a lowly 29.5 coverage grade from players lined up in the box last season — last in the league. Their box players also missed the most tackles in the NFL in 2021. 59. QB Carson Strong: With Carson Strong, the Lions take their shot at a quarterback who boasts a lot of upside. Strong has the acumen to play the position, but his physical tools aren't quite there right now. Coming off a bad knee injury, Strong is statuesque in the pocket. Still, he consistently makes the right decisions. Even while dropping back a whopping 611 times last season, his turnover-worthy play rate was just 2%, one of the lowest in the country. 97. DE Deangelo Malone: Finally, the Lions take another swing at an edge rusher with Deangelo Malone. At just 6-foot-3 and 243 pounds, he can get pushed around a bit, but he uses his speed and hands to good effect and played well against the Power Five opposition that Western Kentucky faced in 2021.) Both players are great fits for Detroit, but it's hard to pass up on a player with the incredible traits Thibodeaux possesses. The Lions get a star pass rusher for the next decade, immediately adding a game changer for a pass rush that needs one. 32. S Daxton Hill: The Lions go after the versatile Hill with the final pick in the first round, continuing to rebuild their defense. Hill is better in coverage than anticipated, as he was asked to play the slot for the Wolverines last year in addition to his duties at safety. Better suited as free safety in the league, Hill is excellent in coverage despite his small build. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn will be happy to work with Hill.) PFF Treash (2. DETROIT LIONS: EDGE KAYVON THIBODEAUX, OREGON DUCKS: Thibodeaux isn't the most refined pass-rusher in this class, and opposing offenses spent a lot of time trying to scheme away from him. But, despite all that, the 6-foot-4, 251-pounder still earned a 91.5 pass-rush grade last year. He boasts all the tools NFL teams desire on the edge and showed improvement throughout his college career. If he can continue on that path of refinement, he can reach NFL All-Pro status. 32. DETROIT LIONS (VIA LAR): S JALEN PITRE, BAYLOR BEARS: Slot corners are valuable pieces to the defense, and Pitre was one of the best slot corners in college football over the last two years at Baylor, producing a top-three slot coverage grade among Power Five defensive backs in that span. The former Baylor Bear didn’t allow a single touchdown in the slot while producing the second-most passing stops (20) and 11 combined plays on the ball. Pitre was also a stout run defender and an excellent pass-rusher, whether in the slot or on the occasions he moved closer to the ball at outside linebacker. He posted a 92.7 run-defense and 83.6 pass-rush grade in 2021. Pitre has the skill set to be a more versatile player in the league than he was at Baylor, but at a minimum, he should be a strong slot defender. He has the physical instinct, quickness and processing ability to do so. 34. DETROIT LIONS: LB LEO CHENAL, WISCONSIN BADGERS: One of the most underrated players in this draft class, Chenal is an explosive athlete who attacks downhill with a vengeance. A season ago, the former Wisconsin Badger actually ranked second among the nation's linebackers in pass-rush grade and first at the position in run-defense grade. Unfortunately, his play in coverage is still a work in progress. He will need a role at the next level that gives him ample opportunity to rush the passer, which the Lions can provide.) NFL Wire (2. Detroit Lions EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux: The Lions didn’t send GM Brad Holmes and several others to Oregon’s pro day without good reason. Thibodeaux has been a popular projection for Detroit since before the 2021 season, and nothing has mitigated the team’s need for an alpha-dog rusher. Thibodeaux needs some work but has the ability to make impact plays with more frequency and panache than any other pass rusher in this class. – Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire. 32. Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams) QB Matt Corral, Ole Miss: Corral isn’t for everyone, but I love the jump he made in all-around play in 2021 despite losing considerable support from the 2020 season. The plucky QB has the arm strength, downfield accuracy, athleticism and leadership that make him a worthy potential successor to Jared Goff. With so many safeties still on the board, the Lions can land an instant starter (Jaquan Brisker, Lewis Cine, Daxton Hill) with the No. 34 pick. – Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire) (4-7-22): https://touchdownwire.usatoday.com/lists/nfl-draft-mock-2022-first-round-picks-projections/
PFF Linsey (2. DETROIT LIONS: EDGE KAYVON THIBODEAUX, OREGON
2021 Record: 3-13-1 - Why do the Lions select Thibodeaux? The Lions are in a difficult position with the hometown prospect not falling to them at No. 2 overall. They could target Kyle Hamilton at safety. However, that would make Hamilton, who is fresh off a disappointing 4.7-second 40-yard dash at his pro day, the highest-drafted safety since Eric Turner was drafted second overall in 1991. Malik Willis could also be an option, but does Detroit really want to target a project at quarterback this high in the draft? Removing those two from consideration leaves Thibodeaux and the current favorite for this slot — Travon Walker — as the two most realistic options. Detroit recently sent seven representatives to Oregon’s Pro Day to get an up-close look at Thibodeaux, and the betting odds have shortened on him becoming the No. 2 overall pick. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Lions come around to the idea that they shouldn’t pass on the projected No. 1 overall pick entering the 2021 season who is fresh off a 91.5 PFF pass-rushing grade last year at Oregon. Is it the right decision? Thibodeaux makes the most sense for Detroit if Hutchinson isn’t on the table. Walker’s ceiling is tantalizing, but Thibodeaux also offers plenty of upside with a much safer track record of production to fall back on than Walker. The Lions need an immediate impact pass-rushing presence off the edge following a 2021 season where their 24% pressure rate ranked 31st in the league. It would be hard to fault Detroit for taking a chance on a high-character, toolsy quarterback prospect such as Willis to develop him for a year behind Jared Goff, but the safer bet is waiting until a stronger 2023 draft class to target a quarterback.) PFN Hodgkinson (2. Detroit Lions: Aidan Hutchinson: If the Jaguars pass on Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson, don’t expect the Detroit Lions to do the same. The Michigan defensive end prospect epitomizes what Dan Campbell wants his Lions to look like. Hard-working, powerful, and coming off the back of an explosively productive final season in Ann Arbor, Hutchinson can be the answer to the Lions’ pass-rush problems. The first two selections in the 2022 NFL Draft have the potential to dictate and transform the entire first round. It’s thought that if the Jaguars were to select Hutchinson first overall, there’s a legitimate chance that the Lions strike for Malik Willis to be their long-term face of the franchise. However, the Liberty QB remains on the board in this 2022 NFL Mock Draft. 32. Detroit Lions (from LAR): WR Jahan Dotson: The Detroit Lions finish off the first round of this 2022 NFL Mock Draft with an almost inevitable selection. Although they added DJ Chark Jr. in free agency, his one-year deal doesn’t change their need to add a pass catcher in April. If anything, it strengthens the need to find a long-term option. With Chark as their big-bodied pass-catching threat, Jahan Dotson gives the Lions a smaller, speedier weapon, who showcases exceptional body control and the vertical agility to go up and snag the ball well above his frame. 34. NFL.com Frelund (2. S Kyle Hamilton: I had an edge rusher here (Hutchinson) in my last mock, so I realize it might seem odd that I now have Detroit taking a safety -- a position often regarded as ranking outside of the top five in terms of priority (QB, pass rusher, LT, WR, CB). But my second-ranked pass rusher (Kayvon Thibodeaux) doesn't offer the same win-share value for the Lions as Hamilton does in 2022. Hamilton's versatility makes him the best selection for Detroit at No. 2 overall, as he has the potential to impact several phases of the game and areas of the field. My favorite Hamilton stat? Computer Vision shows he ranks in the 95th percentile in body control (eight-year sample) in plays that resulted in the following: interceptions, pass breakups, effective blitzing and shutting down outside pass catchers and slot pass catchers. 32. ESPN Tannenbaum (2. Detroit Lions - Ahmad Gardner, CB, Cincinnati: If I'm Detroit, I'm crossing my fingers that Jacksonville goes another way, leaving Hutchinson for an easy win here at No. 2. That's not how things happened, though. And yes, I know the Lions used the No. 3 overall pick on cornerback Jeff Okudah just two years ago, but I also know he has ended up on injured reserve in both of his pro seasons and has been limited to 10 total games. The Lions gave up the NFL's third-best opponent QBR (53.4) last year and still need a corner. Gardner didn't surrender more than 13 yards in a game or a single TD all season in 2021. 32. Detroit Lions (via LAR) - Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss: Getting the fifth-year option is important for drafting a quarterback. The Ravens used the 32nd pick on Lamar Jackson in 2018, and it gave them an extra year on Jackson's rookie deal. Detroit -- after drafting Gardner earlier -- can do the same with Corral. The Lions have Jared Goff under contract, so there's no need to rush Corral into action, especially because he's still working his way all the way back from an ankle injury. But he's a quick prospect with a smooth release. I'm intrigued by the upside here.)
