CBS Kerr (2. DE Kayvon Thibodeaux: Thibodeaux is the best player in the draft -- and the Lions have a really tough time choosing between him and Aidan Hutchinson. Both players are great fits for Detroit, but it's hard to pass up on a player with the incredible traits Thibodeaux possesses. The Lions get a star pass rusher for the next decade, immediately adding a game changer for a pass rush that needs one. 32. S Daxton Hill: The Lions go after the versatile Hill with the final pick in the first round, continuing to rebuild their defense. Hill is better in coverage than anticipated, as he was asked to play the slot for the Wolverines last year in addition to his duties at safety. Better suited as free safety in the league, Hill is excellent in coverage despite his small build. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn will be happy to work with Hill.) He's capable of doing things that others in this class aren't, and while some teams have concerns about his "love of football," I think we sometimes overthink things. Get him in your locker room and let him go to work. You won't be disappointed. 32. QB Desmond Ridder: Getting a QB at No. 32 to get the fifth-year option on the contract just makes too much sense for the Lions not to do it. Jared Goff is not the answer, but Desmond Ridder could be, and it's not like there's a lot of pressure on the Lions to "win now." PFF Treash (2. DETROIT LIONS: EDGE KAYVON THIBODEAUX, OREGON DUCKS: Thibodeaux isn't the most refined pass-rusher in this class, and opposing offenses spent a lot of time trying to scheme away from him. But, despite all that, the 6-foot-4, 251-pounder still earned a 91.5 pass-rush grade last year. He boasts all the tools NFL teams desire on the edge and showed improvement throughout his college career. If he can continue on that path of refinement, he can reach NFL All-Pro status. 32. DETROIT LIONS (VIA LAR): S JALEN PITRE, BAYLOR BEARS: Slot corners are valuable pieces to the defense, and Pitre was one of the best slot corners in college football over the last two years at Baylor, producing a top-three slot coverage grade among Power Five defensive backs in that span. The former Baylor Bear didn’t allow a single touchdown in the slot while producing the second-most passing stops (20) and 11 combined plays on the ball. Pitre was also a stout run defender and an excellent pass-rusher, whether in the slot or on the occasions he moved closer to the ball at outside linebacker. He posted a 92.7 run-defense and 83.6 pass-rush grade in 2021. Pitre has the skill set to be a more versatile player in the league than he was at Baylor, but at a minimum, he should be a strong slot defender. He has the physical instinct, quickness and processing ability to do so. 34. DETROIT LIONS: LB LEO CHENAL, WISCONSIN BADGERS: One of the most underrated players in this draft class, Chenal is an explosive athlete who attacks downhill with a vengeance. A season ago, the former Wisconsin Badger actually ranked second among the nation's linebackers in pass-rush grade and first at the position in run-defense grade. Unfortunately, his play in coverage is still a work in progress. He will need a role at the next level that gives him ample opportunity to rush the passer, which the Lions can provide.) You don’t want to rely on a quarterback that’s going to drop late, and the Lions could package things and move down form here and get a QB, but Jared Goff isn’t that bad. Detroit needs an edge rusher, and it’s not going to mess around at the 2 with either Walker or Thibodeaux. Walker is growing into the hotter prospect. 32. Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams)

The Michigan product seems like a perfect fit athletically and culturally for what head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes are trying to build in the Motor City. His presence, along with the return of a healthy Romeo Okwara, should be exciting for Lions fans. 32. S Lewis Cine: When talking about best prospects available, Cine is near the top of the list. It’s unlikely they’d be able to move down either, which leaves them looking for the most upside as they continue a deep rebuild. Walker’s production might not move the needle, but his versatility and rare athleticism should change that in the pros. 32. NFL Wire (2. Detroit Lions EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux: The Lions didn’t send GM Brad Holmes and several others to Oregon’s pro day without good reason. Thibodeaux has been a popular projection for Detroit since before the 2021 season, and nothing has mitigated the team’s need for an alpha-dog rusher. Thibodeaux needs some work but has the ability to make impact plays with more frequency and panache than any other pass rusher in this class. – Jeff Risdon, Lions Wire. 32. Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams) QB Matt Corral, Ole Miss: Corral isn’t for everyone, but I love the jump he made in all-around play in 2021 despite losing considerable support from the 2020 season. The plucky QB has the arm strength, downfield accuracy, athleticism and leadership that make him a worthy potential successor to Jared Goff. DE Kayvon Thibodeaux: He's awfully confident (yes, a turnoff for some), he seems to be quite interested in his brand (yes, a turnoff for others), and there's talk that his motor doesn't show up every play on film (again, a red flag). But the former No. 1 overall high school recruit is whip smart, loves ball and his teammates at Oregon rave about him. Oh, yeah -- he's also an awesome pass rusher. Emmanuel Sanders was on GMFB this week and put it well: "If a quarterback was talking like that, it would scare me. ... But a defensive lineman talking like that, I'm like, 'OK, you're supposed to feel that way; you want to be able to dominate guys.' " 32. QB Desmond Ridder: I've heard from coaches at the college level, his Jets coaches at the Reese's Senior Bowl and other coaches who have spent time with Ridder that he has the "It" quality you look for in a starting quarterback. The third-winningest QB in college football history, he could be a culture changer in the NFL. Draft Tek (2. S Kyle Hamilton: For several months we have been mocking either Aidan Hutchinson or Kayvon Thibodeaux to Detroit here at #2 overall. However, in recent weeks, many reports began re-surfacing questioning Thibodeaux's "fire" and work ethic citing taking plays off at Oregon. Side note, I find it interesting that these reports re-surfaced again only a few weeks before the NFL Draft. Perhaps some teams' marketing departments have connections with professional propagandists? Enough about Thibodeaux, let's talk about Kyle Hamilton. The line of thinking for Detroit here is simple, if you can't get Hutchinson, go with Thibodeaux. However, this new Dan Campell regime has shown positive signs of building a new culture. If you believe the reports and rumors on Thibodeaux's drive, is that a headache you potentially want to bring on? I wouldn't think so. One of the more safe picks in the draft, Hamilton can provide a really nice defensive chess piece for Aaron Glenn. Hamilton has incredible size for a safety and while some have cited weaknesses in his man coverage, his ball skills, tracking, tackling, and play recognition, makes him a stronger run supporter than a coverage guy. He's extremely versatile, something I've been begging Detroit to do for the last several years, taking a linebacker or a safety, they haven't really addressed either position, it may just be time to actually pull the trigger. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst 32. QB Kenny Pickett: The Lions take their QB of the future here and how fitting since it's the pick they acquired from Los Angeles in the Matthew Stafford trade. Out of all the QBs in this year's draft class, Pickett, to me, has been the one guy that I would want. While for some, that's blasphemous as Malik Willis is, in many circles, the clear #1 QB of the class thanks to his mobility, arm strength, and raw talent, Pickett has been "picked" apart throughout the entire draft process just enough to where he could fall in the perfect spot for Detroit to nab him. From his hand size, his age (24), and this past year being his only true productive season, Pickett has had a lot of question marks and concerns surrounding his potential as a legitimate starting QB in the league. There's always been something to knock about this guy, which further cements my belief he's a prototypical Dan Campbell type player with a chip on his shoulder. As apparently customary to shame Kenny Pickett, I'd like to propose we begin the narrative that if we're going to cite his small hands (8.5 inches), we really need to jump on his last name. How does that mentally go into his weekly preparation? I'm not sure if we can draft a quarterback with interceptions baked into his identity (Pick-It). Aside from that light jab at his haters, Detroit clearly needs a QB of the future. They could wait until next season, but is there ever a guarantee the right QB, the right draft placement next year, all the variables will align? If Pickett is available here, make the pick. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst 34. WR John Metchie.: A clean and smooth route runner, Metchie does an incredible job at getting release from his opposing defender. Now, while I would personally prefer Detroit target a more big body receiver to compliment new free agent signee, D.J. Chark on the opposite side of the field, Metchie provides another slot-like skillset to the Lions offense and can pair nicely with Amon-Ra St. Brown. Fun fact, did you know that Amon-Ra St. Brown had 11 catches of 20+ yards in 2021? He tied with Odell Beckham Jr. and D.K. Metcalf. Keenan Allen had 12. Perhaps St. Brown may take on that role, opposite of Chark if Metchie can become the lone slot guy. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst. 66.
DE Kingsley Enagbare: If you can't get Thibodeaux, or don't want to, and there are other pressing needs in Round 2 like receiver (John Metchie), perhaps addressing edge rusher here with Kingsley Enagbare is a good route to take. Enagbare posted 15 sacks in his 4-year career at South Carolina and with his comparable size and playstyle to Thibodeaux, this might be a sneaky good value pick, if it comes to fruition. - Doug Hyde, Lions Analyst 97. LB Brandon Smith: If you can't get Thibodeaux, or don't want to, and there are other pressing needs in Round 2 like receiver (John Metchie), perhaps addressing edge rusher here with Kingsley Enagbare is a good route to take. PFF Linsey (2. DETROIT LIONS: EDGE KAYVON THIBODEAUX, OREGON
2021 Record: 3-13-1 - Why do the Lions select Thibodeaux? The Lions are in a difficult position with the hometown prospect not falling to them at No. 2 overall. They could target Kyle Hamilton at safety. However, that would make Hamilton, who is fresh off a disappointing 4.7-second 40-yard dash at his pro day, the highest-drafted safety since Eric Turner was drafted second overall in 1991. Malik Willis could also be an option, but does Detroit really want to target a project at quarterback this high in the draft? Removing those two from consideration leaves Thibodeaux and the current favorite for this slot — Travon Walker — as the two most realistic options. Detroit recently sent seven representatives to Oregon’s Pro Day to get an up-close look at Thibodeaux, and the betting odds have shortened on him becoming the No. 2 overall pick. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Lions come around to the idea that they shouldn’t pass on the projected No. 1 overall pick entering the 2021 season who is fresh off a 91.5 PFF pass-rushing grade last year at Oregon. Is it the right decision? Thibodeaux makes the most sense for Detroit if Hutchinson isn’t on the table. Walker’s ceiling is tantalizing, but Thibodeaux also offers plenty of upside with a much safer track record of production to fall back on than Walker. The Lions need an immediate impact pass-rushing presence off the edge following a 2021 season where their 24% pressure rate ranked 31st in the league. It would be hard to fault Detroit for taking a chance on a high-character, toolsy quarterback prospect such as Willis to develop him for a year behind Jared Goff, but the safer bet is waiting until a stronger 2023 draft class to target a quarterback.) Walterfootball (2. Detroit Lions: DE Travon Walker: The Lions will investigate both top quarterbacks. If they fall in love with one of them, they will draft that signal-caller; no questions asked. Whether or not they become smitten with Kenny Pickett or Malik Willis is the big question. Willis was solid at the combine, but I don't know if he quite did enough. I've slotted Drake London here since the combine, and he was in the lead for the No. 2 pick. Now, Travon Walker has become the favorite. There's a chance Walker may not even be here, given that Jacksonville believes he has more upside than Aidan Hutchinson. Walker got off to a hot start during the 2021 season. Walker has great size and athleticism, and he was one of the top performers at the combine. 32. Detroit Lions: S Lewis Cine: The Lions have huge holes throughout their roster, and their secondary is no exception. Lewis Cine is coming off a terrific year for Georgia, patrolling the middle of the field during the team's championship run. 34. CB Alontae Taylor: Jeff Okudah looks like a bust thus far, but even if he pans out, the Lions still need cornerback help for their horrendous secondary. The speedy Alontae Taylor has put together some great tape as a corner in the SEC. 65. LB Damone Clark: The Lions have a major lack of talent at linebacker, so they'll need to address this area soon. Damone Clark could be the next great LSU linebacker with his size and speed. 97. DE Michael Clemons: The Lions cut Trey Flowers, so they'll want to obtain an edge rusher. Micheal Clemons is a bit raw, but defnitely has high potential. 177. USA Today Middlehurst-Schwartz (2. Lions – QB Malik Willis: Is it time for general manager Brad Holmes to take a swing for Detroit's long-term answer at quarterback? Jared Goff buys the franchise some time as a returning starter, but the Lions can't lounge in limbo at the position indefinitely. A dazzling playmaker with his downfield darts and electric running to keep defenses off balance, Willis has the tools to take an offense to the next level if he's developed properly. There are still big questions about whether a team can set him up for a considerable payoff, as his poise in the pocket leaves much to be desired. But Holmes said this week he would be comfortable drafting a quarterback to sit behind Goff, which could be the right configuration for both Willis and the Lions. 32. CBS Wilson (2. DE Trayvon Walker: Walker is something of a tweener, which is odd to say about someone who stands 6-foot-5, and weighs 275 pounds. But he can line up as a 3, 4 or 5-tech and that versatility, coupled with his non-stop motor and consistent playmaking ability, makes him an attractive option for any team looking to bolster its defensive line. Walker's stock has skyrocketed during the pre-draft process and he's just scratching the surface on how good could he can be. He has really good tape, but he also played on a Georgia defense that could end up with 4-5 first-round picks and his combine performance -- a 4.51 40, a vertical of 35.5 inches and a mind-boggling 3-cone of 6.89 seconds -- only reminded people of why he has a chance to be special. 32. QB Sam Howell: The more we watch Howell the more we like. He carried the Tar Heels in '21, after losing his two best WRs and two best RBs to the NFL. It wasn't pretty at times, but he has the arm strength and the athleticism we see on Sundays from the league's best young passers, and in Detroit he can sit for a year behind Jared Goff.) SN Iyer (2. Detroit Lions - S Kyle Hamilton: The Lions also feel like they're going for defensive impact and the decision for Brad Holmes, Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn will come down to Hamilton, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux or versatile 3-4 hybrid playmaker. Hamilton is the safest, can't-miss option here because he will continue to make a ton of plays on the back end vs. the pass and also clean up like an extra linebacker vs. the run. 32. LB Devin Lloyd: The Lions, after getting Hamilton to upgrade safety in their back seven, can get another dynamic playmaker. Lloyd can line up well in the middle or the strong side and they should be thrilled if Lloyd lasts this long because of the position he plays. Lloyd is a good run defender but his impact calling card comes in the passing game as both a blitzer and cover man. 34. John Metchie III, WR: The Lions could also think more defense here but it's also not bad to add an extra weapon. Metchie's field-stretching ways would fit well with D'Andre Swift, Amon-Ra St. Brown, D.J. Chark and T.J. Hockenson. 66. Sam Howell, QB: The Lions should consider quarterback wherever there's a good feel for it after No. 2 overall and after passing on the position in the first round, it's worth taking a cheaper look at Howell's polished arm and athletic skill set beyond Jared Goff. 97. Mykael Wright, CB: The Lions need more versatile and reliable players in coverage to use in a variety of roles and Wright is a solid solution. 177. Detroit Lions (compensatory): Bam Knight, RB. 181. Walter football Charlie (2. Detroit Lions: DE Travon Walker - The Lions could use another edge rusher and a three-technique interior pass rusher. Walker could fill either spot and chip in at both depending on how they line up. Walker has star potential and could be a great pick for Detroit. Throughout the fall, scouts were buzzing about Walker, and he put himself on the map as an early-round prospect for the 2022 NFL Draft. The junior put together an impressive 2021, including starting off with big performance against Clemson in the season opener and finishing the year by helping Georgia beat Alabama in the National Championship. In 2021, Walker totaled 34 tackles, five sacks and a pass batted but was more disruptive than the numbers suggest. Team sources say Walker is big, athletic and has speed. He gave that proof by putting together a phenomenal combine, at which he was fast, fluid and athletic in a tremendous performance on the field.. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound Walker has the size to set the edge and is quick off the ball. They feel he is a well-rounded defender with a lot of upside. Some sources have even said that Walker has some similar characteristics to J.J. Watt, and has huge upside like Watt did coming out of Wisconsin. Don't be surprised if Walker goes high in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Here are the thoughts of an area scout on Walker, "He is one of my favorites. He's completely untapped, and he can play anywhere on the defensive line in any scheme. He's my favorite of this defensive line class. He's already a very good player, relentless, and still has huge upside. Walker can drop 10 pounds and be Cam Jordan, or gain 15 pounds and play DeForest Buckner." 32. S Lewis Cine: The Lions got a nice deal in re-signing Tracy Walker but they could use a safety upgrade to go with him. Cine was a valuable defender for the Bulldogs in 2021, locking down the deep middle of the field. He totaled 73 tackles, an interception and nine passes batted. As a sophomore in 2020, Cine had 52 tackles and three passes broken up. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder has a good skill set with upside, and some sources think he rise into being a first-rounder. Cine was a star of the combine interviews, showing tremendous football IQ, character and instincts. While he is a more natural strong safety, Cine also can play some free safety, so he offers NFL teams pre- and post-snap interchangeability. 34. WR George Pickens - The Lions need a big X receiver to go with D.J. Chark and Amon-Ra St. Brown. After suffering a torn ACL in Spring 2021, Pickens didn't play until late in the 2021 season, notching five receptions for 107 yards for his year. Team sources are high on his skill set of size, speed and athleticism. In 2020, Pickens had 36 receptions for 513 yards and six touchdowns. He played well as a freshman for Georgia, catching 49 passes for 727 yards and eight touchdowns. The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder has the upside to be better as he gains experience. 66. CB Martin Emerson: Detroit could use more cornerback talent. Emerson is a tall cornerback with good length and the size to handle big pro receivers. He recorded 49 tackles and three passes defended in 2021 after making 72 stops with 11 breakups in 2020. Emerson did not record an interception in either season, with his lone collegiate interception coming in 2019 when he notched 31 tackles. The lack of ball skills and production are disappointing, but Emerson has a lot going for him according to team sources. At 6-foot-2, 201 pounds, Emerson has shown the skills to be a press-man corner, and he is not stiff at opening his hips to turn and run. Emerson could end up being a candidate for a Day 2 of the 2022 NFL Draft. 97. LB Damone Clark (COMPENSATORY PICK): As I reported months ago, the Lions were likely to get a compensatory pick for losing Kenny Golladay in free agency last year, and they ended up getting pick No. 97. Detroit could use a linebacker upgrade and Clark would be a great fit. They can stick with Alex Anzalone for a year and then pair Clark with Derrick Barnes. Clark was a tackling machine in 2021, ending up as one of with one of the highest totals in the NCAA, and shooting up draft boards. Team sources rave about Clark (6-3, 245), saying his skill set is similar to Micah Parsons'. While Parsons is more explosive and violent as a tackler, Clark has better instincts. They think Clark could be a more athletic and more physical version of Zach Cunningham, who led the NFL in tackles early in his career. Clark is a future three-down starter who is a sideline-to-sideline tackling machine and contribute well in coverage. In 2021, Clark recorded 135 tackles, two forced fumbles, 5.5 sacks, one interception and two passes defended. He had 63 tackles in 2020 and 49 in 2019 to go along with 3.5 sacks. The 6-foot-3, 245-pounder possesses excellent size to go along with quickness and athleticism. He was a consensus second-round pick before the combine medical exam revealed that Clark needed neck hernia surgery that will likely cost him his rookie season. He is expected to make a full recovery, but the health issue will probably drop him to the mid-rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft. Still, Clark could be a mid-round steal for a team that stashes him on injured reserve and then has an early-round value coming to its defense in 2023.) PFN Hodgkinson (2. Detroit Lions: Aidan Hutchinson: If the Jaguars pass on Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson, don’t expect the Detroit Lions to do the same. The Michigan defensive end prospect epitomizes what Dan Campbell wants his Lions to look like. Hard-working, powerful, and coming off the back of an explosively productive final season in Ann Arbor, Hutchinson can be the answer to the Lions’ pass-rush problems. The first two selections in the 2022 NFL Draft have the potential to dictate and transform the entire first round. It’s thought that if the Jaguars were to select Hutchinson first overall, there’s a legitimate chance that the Lions strike for Malik Willis to be their long-term face of the franchise. However, the Liberty QB remains on the board in this 2022 NFL Mock Draft. 32. Detroit Lions (from LAR): WR Jahan Dotson: The Detroit Lions finish off the first round of this 2022 NFL Mock Draft with an almost inevitable selection. Although they added DJ Chark Jr. in free agency, his one-year deal doesn’t change their need to add a pass catcher in April. If anything, it strengthens the need to find a long-term option. With Chark as their big-bodied pass-catching threat, Jahan Dotson gives the Lions a smaller, speedier weapon, who showcases exceptional body control and the vertical agility to go up and snag the ball well above his frame. 34. FTW D'Andrea (2. Detroit Lions (3-13-1): S Kyle Hamilton (Team needs: WR, DE, LB, CB, S, QB): Head coach Dan Campbell would love the chance to motivate a five-star pass rushing prospect like Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux. In my gut, I still think that will be the direction Detroit takes. But if the Lions stay at No. 2 — and a trade down to replenish a needy roster is very possible — Hamilton could be their guy. The Notre Dame All-American remains a popular choice despite poor workouts at both the Combine and his pro day — his 4.56-second 40 was only 0.03 seconds faster than his time in Indianapolis and some scouts clocked him at even worse. Hamilton’s play is a function of much more than just straight-line speed. Several outlets, including The Ringer, ESPN (per Todd McShay), and The Draft Network have named him 2022’s top prospect. Hamilton’s size, agility, and instincts give him the ability to be a difference maker both as a pass deterrent and tackler — two major needs for a team that ranked 29th in defensive DVOA last season and 32nd in 2020. While safety is a generally devalued position in the NFL, Campbell needs playmakers and isn’t afraid to think outside the box to do so. Here, he’d be getting arguably the best one in the 2022 Draft. 32. Detroit Lions (3-13-1, via Los Angeles Rams): QB Matt Corral (Team needs: WR, DE, LB, CB, S, QB): The Lions can complete the circle by using a draft pick traded in exchange for their former quarterback of the future, Matthew Stafford, to select their next quarterback of the future. Corral would be a welcome alternative to Jared Goff’s low-impact, checkdown-heavy passing game in Detroit. Corral was both accurate and efficient at Ole Miss, averaging more than nine yards per pass attempt. His size would have been an issue in past drafts, but at 6’2 he’s taller than nine other quarterbacks who started at least eight games the last two seasons. He showed off an increased capacity to protect the ball in 2021. While he’s coming off an ankle injury suffered last winter he’s still an exciting runner from the pocket capable of extending plays and creating magic. He also has a tendency to save his best stuff for big moments: 10 of his 11 games with 300+ passing yards the past two seasons came against Power 5 opponents. 34. NFL.com Frelund (2. S Kyle Hamilton: I had an edge rusher here (Hutchinson) in my last mock, so I realize it might seem odd that I now have Detroit taking a safety -- a position often regarded as ranking outside of the top five in terms of priority (QB, pass rusher, LT, WR, CB). But my second-ranked pass rusher (Kayvon Thibodeaux) doesn't offer the same win-share value for the Lions as Hamilton does in 2022. Hamilton's versatility makes him the best selection for Detroit at No. 2 overall, as he has the potential to impact several phases of the game and areas of the field. My favorite Hamilton stat? Computer Vision shows he ranks in the 95th percentile in body control (eight-year sample) in plays that resulted in the following: interceptions, pass breakups, effective blitzing and shutting down outside pass catchers and slot pass catchers. 32. There might not be a pure fit evident in this spot, but we can easily say that we'd love to see Walker go to a team like this where he can be developed steadily as a pass rusher. There also has been chatter of the Jaguars and Lions flipping picks, so Detroit can get Hutchinson. The top of the draft remains cloudy, which adds to the drama. 32. Lions (via Los Angeles Rams)
Devin Lloyd: In the back of our mind, we were thinking about a QB such as Desmond Ridder here. But with Lloyd sliding to this spot, it just feels like a value opportunity. PFN Miller (2. Detroit Lions: Malik Willis: Malik Willis is a long-term project for the future. In a vacuum, he’s not worth the second overall pick. However, the tax on drafting a quarterback is high, and there’s no guarantee that the Lions will be in a position to select their franchise talent in the 2023 NFL Draft. Willis has all the physical tools necessary to be a franchise quarterback. He must progress his process and become cleaner overall, but the ball of clay is there. There’s no point in betting the farm on a thoroughbred that didn’t make the cut as a racehorse. No, the farm is bet on that temperamental horse that needs around-the-clock assistance but has the potential to win the Kentucky Derby. In the modern NFL, quarterbacks are much the same. There aren’t many “traditional” pocket QBs out there anymore. The game evolved. Willis is that evolution. 32. Detroit Lions: WR Treylon Burks: Treylon Burks‘ stock seemed to be going up for some time before the NFL Combine brought it back down to where it had originally been. And yes, I know the Lions used the No. 3 overall pick on cornerback Jeff Okudah just two years ago, but I also know he has ended up on injured reserve in both of his pro seasons and has been limited to 10 total games. The Lions gave up the NFL's third-best opponent QBR (53.4) last year and still need a corner. Gardner didn't surrender more than 13 yards in a game or a single TD all season in 2021. 32. Detroit Lions (via LAR) - Matt Corral, QB, Ole Miss: Getting the fifth-year option is important for drafting a quarterback. The Ravens used the 32nd pick on Lamar Jackson in 2018, and it gave them an extra year on Jackson's rookie deal. Detroit -- after drafting Gardner earlier -- can do the same with Corral. The Lions have Jared Goff under contract, so there's no need to rush Corral into action, especially because he's still working his way all the way back from an ankle injury. But he's a quick prospect with a smooth release. I'm intrigued by the upside here.) PFF Gayle (PICK NO. 2: DETROIT LIONS: EDGE KAYVON THIBODEAUX, OREGON - The media-driven narrative building around Thibodeaux’s on-field effort, off-field interests and overall passion for football has reached ridiculous levels. I, admittedly, have brought more awareness to some of that negative conversation in discussions on the PFF Tailgate podcast but remain convinced a lot of the claims are exaggerated and relatively noisy in terms of projecting on-field success in the NFL. In interviews with media throughout the pre-draft process, including his podium session at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, Thibodeaux has been adamant about addressing those concerns. His self-confidence is wrongfully viewed as arrogance, and his interest in maximizing the value of his brand is simply intimidating to traditional NFL thinkers — not an antecedent to coachability or “love of the game” concerns. That’s not to say Thibodeaux is a perfect prospect. More legitimate concerns surrounding his hand usage, pass-rushing technique and ability to string moves together in a pass-rush plan will need to be addressed at the next level for him to reach his maximum potential. But that maximum potential is worth investing in as early as No. 2 overall, if not at the top of April’s draft. PICK NO. 28: DETROIT LIONS (VIA L.A. Hutchinson would likely be a home-run selection if he's available, yet Detroit doesn't need one of the draft's stellar offensive tackles, that position already set for the Lions with Taylor Decker and Penei Sewell. Barring a trade, fast-rising Walker would be a sensible alternative, especially in the wake of DE Trey Flowers's release. A scheme-diverse, explosive (4.51 40 time and 35½-inch vertical leap), 6-5, 272-pounder, Walker can pretty much do it all – from applying pressure to shutting down run lanes, to dropping into coverage. He only had 9½ sacks in three seasons with the Dawgs, so the lack of production is slightly puzzling even when viewed in the context of Georgia’s depth and fact Walker often lined up inside. But the ability is there – and so, too, might be increased opportunities by teaming him with Charles Harris and Romeo Okwara, a trio that could form a pretty decent pass rush. 32. Lions (from Los Angeles Rams) – S Daxton Hill: He can play in the slot, box or center field, his 4.38 speed a welcome trait at any of those spots. Still, Hutchinson proved himself an elite athlete, no matter the conversation concerning his bend or his shorter-than-you’d-like-to-see arms. He’s a high-level producer and is strong as an ox. Just ask Graham Glasgow. The Heisman runner-up is PFF’s top-ranked prospect on the board and the site’s highest-graded defender in all of college football. Hutchinson is an all-around talent that fits the mold of what Dan Campbell and his staff are looking for -- a high-motor, impressive athlete and a playmaker for the edges. He had 14 sacks and 51 hurries on 794 defensive snaps. His pass-rush win rate (24.8%) and run-stop win rate (8.0%) are what you want to see. Charles Harris led the way with 7.5 sacks and 52 pressures. He’s a free agent. Romeo Okwara is working back from an Achilles injury. Trey Flowers is paid like one of the league’s top edge rushers despite having only 3.5 sacks in two years. Hutchinson fills a need, and then some. If the Jaguars let him slip, this is a run to the podium selection. 32. Detroit Lions -- Georgia WR George Pickens: I’m officially in on George Pickens. There’s a toughness and flavor to this guy that screams fit for the Detroit Lions. He’s 6-foot-3, ran a 4.47-second 40-yard dash and is a willing blocker. Pickens missed most of last season after tearing his ACL. He returned for a limited role in the national championship game, catching a 52-yard pass. Pickens fits what this team should be looking for as a potential go-to option. He caught 49 balls for 727 yards and eight touchdowns as a freshman. Pickens hasn’t hit that level in the two years since. Still, it’s easy to see how this fits with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Josh Reynolds, T.J. Hockenson and D’Andre Swift.) MLive Meinke (2. Detroit Lions: Michigan DE Aidan Hutchinson: In 2019, I walked away from the combine figuring T.J. Hockenson was the favorite for Detroit. A year later, I walked away knowing Jeff Okudah was the favorite. This year, I walked away from Indianapolis believing Aidan Hutchinson would be the choice if he’s still on the board. And let’s be very frank, he might not still be on the board. Maybe the Jaguars really are bringing back Robinson so they can move on Hutchinson at the top of the draft. But if the Michigan pass rusher is there, I believe he’s the obvious pick over Kayvon Thibodeaux, Kyle Hamilton, Malik Willis and every other name people are tossing around. This league is all about passers and pass rushers, and the Lions haven’t had a playmaking pass rusher in way, way too long. Short of finding a quarterback -- which I don’t believe they will -- adding a big-time pass rusher should be their top priority. And Hutchinson is the best this class has to offer. He set the Michigan single-season sack record last year (14), racked up 73 total pressures overall and had a killer pass-rush win rate of 25.4%. His motor also never turns off, which is important for a team that is trying to rebuild its culture as well as the roster. That’s why the Lions prized Penei Sewell in the top 10 last year, and it’s why Hutchinson -- a physical player who just never stops comin’ -- makes more sense than, say, Kayvon Thibodeaux. Fair or not, there are questions about Thibodeaux’s motor and commitment to the game. I think some of those questions are fair, others not. Either way, he didn’t exactly answer those questions by showing up to the combine and saying he would do everything, then withdrawing early anyway because the day was “too long.” Hutchinson, meantime, competed in everything except the bench press. And he proved he’s an elite athlete too, running the three-cone drill faster than everyone except three defensive backs and two receivers, while his 20-yard shuttle was topped by just two defensive backs and one receiver. Freaky stuff from a 6-foot-7, 260-pound defensive end who is known more for his physicality anyway. His Relative Athletic Score ranked 20th out of the 1,389 defensive ends who have come through the combine from 1987-2022. (RAS measures how a player’s size and athletic traits compare to all other players at his position.) The combine is just one small slice of the evaluation pie, and I think outsiders weigh it more heavily than NFL teams do. But Hutchinson’s performance did silence any festering doubts about him as an athlete, while the tape just screams Dan Campbell. So does the personality. Here’s betting Hutchinson is the pick if he’s there. Which is an awfully big if these days. 32. Detroit Lions: Georgia LB Nakobe Dean: You can’t get the Lions to shut up about their interest in wide receivers these days. They want not just one, but two or perhaps even three. And that won’t change even after inking Josh Reynolds to a two-year, $12 million deal this week. To that end, I gave Georgia wideout George Pickens strong consideration for them because of his extraordinary speed and catch radius, not to mention he would block his own mother if she were lined up across from him. But in the end, I couldn’t justify passing on one of the best playmaking linebackers in the country, especially with another pick lurking just two spots later and a bunch of really good receivers still on the board. Maybe I’ve just watched too much Lions football over the last decade, but it has been a long time -- a very, very long time -- since they had a playmaker at linebacker. No offense to Derrick Barnes, but I just don’t think he’s it either. And given the opportunity to add someone like Dean, a speedster who just led the best, most athletic defense in the country in tackles for loss (10.5) -- and doing so after they already added the top edge rusher in the draft -- well, that would transform a Lions defense that was trending up anyway under coordinator Aaron Glenn. Give Glenn new playmakers at the first and second level, plus whatever receiver they like at the top of the second round, and I think the Lions would be in good shape to compete for a wild-card spot in 2022.) Ridder may not be an eye-popping prospect, but he has a nice total package of athleticism, leadership and improving passing vision. Detroit gives Jared Goff some real competition.) PFF Spielberger (2. DETROIT LIONS: QB MALIK WILLIS, LIBERTY (Big Board Rank: 22): The Lions get a jumpstart on their future, selecting quarterback Willis with the No. 2 overall pick while keeping quarterback Jared Goff in the fold for the 2022 season so that Willis has time to learn the NFL game. Willis had his ups and downs in 2021 but finished the season with a 91.6 overall grade and an 11% big-time throw rate while playing behind a shaky offensive line. Of all the quarterback prospects in this year’s class, Willis has the highest upside by a good margin. 32. DETROIT LIONS (VIA LAR): CB TRENT MCDUFFIE, WASHINGTON
(Big Board Rank: 8): The Lions could use help at a number of spots on their defense, but cornerback sticks out as a major position of need. McDuffie earned 80.0-plus grades in three straight college seasons, recording an interception, five pass breakups and zero touchdowns allowed over his final two college seasons. While he may be best lined up in the slot, he deserves a shot to prove himself on the outside from the outset. ) (3-8-22): https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2022-nfl-mock-draft-jacksonville-jaguars-take-michigan-aidan-hutchinson-no-1-overall-liberty-malik-willis-lands-with-detroit-lions
PFF Palazzolo (2. DETROIT LIONS: S KYLE HAMILTON, NOTRE DAME (Big Board Rank: 2): Safety is usually not in consideration in the top few picks of the draft, but Hamilton has game-changing playmaking ability. His length and range bring incredible versatility to any defense, and he ranks in the 90th percentile in forcing incompletions compared to recent NFL prospects. 32. DETROIT LIONS (VIA LAR): QB SAM HOWELL, NORTH CAROLINA (Big Board Rank: 20): The second quarterback comes off the board, and it’s another situation where the team is in a position to exhibit patience. The Lions draft Howell with the fifth-year option in mind, and they can redshirt him behind Jared Goff in 2022 if necessary. Howell did his best work as a passer in 2020, so there are questions about his development, but he has the best track record as a passer among this quarterback class.) Fox sports Rob Rang (2. Detroit Lions: S Kyle Hamilton - The Lions need a dynamic edge rusher and have a unique perspective on Kayvon Thibodeaux because last year’s top pick, Penei Sewell, faced him every day for two years at Oregon. Thibodeaux is arguably the most gifted rusher in this draft, but the inconsistency and injuries that characterized his college career are the antithesis of the traits Detroit GM Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell prioritize. As such, should the local hero, Hutchinson, be off the board, don’t be surprised if the Lions address their defense with Hamilton, the most unique talent in this class. 32. Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams): Nakobe Dean, ILB, Georgia - The Lions' top two tacklers at linebacker, Alex Anzalone and Jalen Reeves-Maybin, are pending free agents and might not be priorities to re-sign as the roster rebuild continues. The reigning Butkus Award winner would be an ideal replacement should he still be on the board. ) (2-15-21): https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2022-nfl-mock-draft-edge-rushers-dominate-qbs-slide

PFF Galina (2. DETROIT LIONS: CB DEREK STINGLEY, LSU: There is no better player in the draft than Stingley. At LSU’s bowl practices in 2018, he was still the best cornerback on the field despite still being in high school. He parlayed that into one of the best freshman seasons PFF has ever seen in 2019 — he recorded the highest wins above average (WAA) by a non-quarterback that season. The next two seasons were marred by injuries but when he’s on the field, there is no one better. He's a true lockdown cornerback. 31. DETROIT LIONS: S LEWIS CINE, GEORGIA: The Lions had the second-worst safety group in the league last season, as it posted a 51.9 cumulative grade. Cine fixes that in a hurry. Cine has been used in a multitude of ways in Georgia's defense and fits Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn's archetype for safeties.)
