2026 NFL draft: Mel Kiper's favorite prospects by position (Avieon Terrell, Clemson; D'Angelo Ponds, Indiana; Chandler Rivers, Duke:  I went three-deep at cornerback, but Terrell, Ponds and Rivers are all somewhat similar as prospects. All three have versatility, but are likely slot corners in the NFL. Terrell is 5-foot-11 and 186 pounds. Ponds is 5-foot-9 and 182 pounds. And Rivers is 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds. Not the most ideal size across the board.  But they all play a spunky brand of football. They maximize their ability with sound route recognition, good awareness and a knack for making plays. Ponds used his explosion (43½-inch vertical jump at the combine) and ball skills to tally seven picks and 27 pass breakups over three seasons. Rivers nearly matched Ponds, with seven INTs and 23 pass breakups over four years. He locates the ball well and can then plant and drive with his 4.4 speed. And Terrell can flip his hips, stick on even the fastest receivers and then find the ball at just the right moment. He had three picks and 27 pass breakups over three seasons.  Terrell, Ponds and Rivers aren't shy about contact despite their frames. They're tough cornerbacks. And I'd bet all three do a lot of the same impactful things they did in college -- pick off passes, force fumbles, block kicks, etc. -- in the pros. With sizable secondary questions lingering for several teams in the back portion of the first round, Terrell figured to be one of the figures who could stand to benefit from those dynamics colliding. Though the Clemson standout and brother of Atlanta Falcons cornerback A.J. Clemson’s 2026 NFL Draft Class Could be Historical (Avieon Terrell, Cornerback, 5-11, 180-pounds:  Avieon Terrell, a former cornerback for Clemson and an NFL legacy, is also in an interesting position ahead of the draft. Five Players Detroit Lions Cannot Draft (Clemson CB Avieon Terrell:  Terrell is one of the top cornerback prospects in this year's draft, but his size could lead to some schematic limitations. That thought process can be applied to a few players who performed on Day 2, but one of the players it applies to the most would be Avieon Terrell.  He didn’t jump incredibly well in the vertical or broad jumps, but his movement skills in positional drills were nothing short of fantastic. He looked in complete control every step of the way, changing direction on a dime, flipping his hips seamlessly, and accelerating well out of his breaks. 2026 Scouting Combine: Avieon Terrell, D’Angelo Ponds, and More Cornerbacks Detail Their Best Plays (Avieon Terrell, Clemson:  The younger brother of Atlanta Falcons cornerback A.J. Terrell, Avieon Terrell in 2025 allowed 29 catches on 51 targets for 340 yards, 177 yards after the catch, three touchdowns, no interceptions, five pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 96.9. Is it disconcerting that he had no interceptions last season? I would opine that his opponent passer rating taking a jump in each of the last three seasons (42.8 in 2023 and 70.9 in 2024) is the bigger issue, but Terrell was nicely in phase on all of those pass breakups. A few reps with the JUGS machine to work on catching the ball would definitely go a long way there.  When I asked Terrell for his favorite plays, he talked about as fast as he plays on the field, which is pretty fast!  “Yeah, a play [against] South Carolina, where I shot the ball [drove to the receiver in coverage]. And that play [against] LSU, first quarter, I came over there and hit the tight end. Showing what I can do, how I disguise and make the tackle.”  So, the forced fumble against South Carolina was one of five that Terrell had in 2025, which is impressive in and of itself. He was in off coverage against receiver Donovan Murph. and came down to rob receiver Jared Brown on an intermediate crossing route. This spoke to Terrell’s ability to stay in coverage phase, and also break off to take other responsibilities — something that NFL teams obviously hold in high regard.  The LSU play was another forced fumble in which Terrell peeled off his original outside assignment on receiver Kyle Parker, and blew up tight end Bauer Sharp for the takeaway.) With fast feet and elite body control (something I wrote down multiple times in my notes), Terrell showed the ability to open his hips and explode out of breaks. He gains speed quickly and pushes for more at every turn. He showed tremendous ball skills, turning and locating with ease, and properly using his arms to catch the ball away from his body. What We Learned: 7 takeaways from NFL combine (3. Sibling rivalry brewing. Clemson CB Avieon Terrell -- the younger brother of Falcons CB A.J. Terrell -- arrived at this year's combine as a potential first-round pick six years after his brother was selected 16th overall by Atlanta. Avieon didn't hesitate on Thursday when he was asked whether he wants to best A.J.'s 4.42-second 40-yard dash time from the 2020 combine.  "Yeah, I'm going to try to destroy all his times" Avieon said. "I want to be able to talk junk to him."  It appears the trash talk will have to wait until later, though, as Avieon told NFL.com he will be participating in all the combine events except the 40-yard dash.  It might turn out that Avieon is faster, but A.J. is larger, measuring 6-1 and 200 pounds, while Avieon is listed by Clemson at 5-11 and 180 pounds.  "I feel like I can get the ball more than him, but no real difference," Avieon said of the comparison between their games. "He's just bigger. That's it."  If that proves to be true, Avieon's drafting team will likely be very happy with its decision. Just being able to hit somebody for free,” Terrell said. “You wake up and can just go hit somebody. So I love that about football. A quick table setting for this section. While Downs is a no-brainer pick if he falls to pick No. 17, it’s harder to justify picking another defensive back at that spot unless there are things happening behind the scenes in Detorit that we are not aware of, including things like a schematic shift from three linebacker sets to a nickel-based defense, or if an injured player’s status is worse than what is expected.  Avieon Terrell, NB/CB, Clemson (6-foot-0, 188) - The younger brother of Falcons CB A.J., Avieon Terrell shares similar DNA-gifted traits, but projects best as a press-man nickel corner in the NFL. If the Lions are looking for a full-time nickel for their press-man scheme, outside of Downs, Terrell is arguably the best fit for that role in this draft class. Terrell is a high-energy prospect with a competitive spirit, plus instincts, and the ability to see the entire field. He has elite quickness, is a fluid mover, and maintains string body control when changing directions on the fly. He’s sticky in man coverage and stays in phase with a variety of routes. His read-and-react skills allow him to quickly locate passes, and he’s constantly targeting the ball on PBUs, pounch-outs, and strip fumbles. Against the run, he’s an aggressive filler and capable blitzer. While he has outside CB range, he doesn’t use his size to his advantage, and should find more success inside.) 2026 NFL draft questions: Top prospects, QB class, risers (Why is the race for CB1 a little more complicated than normal?  Kiper: Well, the top CB hasn't played a snap all season. Jermod McCoy (Tennessee) is No. 16 on my Big Board, but he tore his ACL in January and might miss the whole season. NFL teams will love his ball-hawking traits (four INTs in 2024), but they will obviously be looking closely at those medicals and have to weigh a full year off the football field.  Behind him, things don't get any clearer. Avieon Terrell (Clemson) is solid but hasn't picked off any passes this season. Kelley Jones (Mississippi State) shows a veru good feel for coverage, but he's a third-year sophomore, so teams haven't done a ton of work on him yet. Mansoor Delane (LSU) makes plays on the ball with six INTs and 17 pass breakups over the past two seasons, but there are questions about his true speed. Brandon Cisse (South Carolina) has had a few hiccups in coverage. Simply put, no one looks elite.  Day 1 might be tough to sort out at the position, but the Day 2 guys have some upside. Position Battles That Could Decide Matchup vs Clemson (Cooper Barkate vs Avieon Terrell:  This is probably the best good-on-good matchup in the game. Barkate has been a revelation for the Blue Devils this season. The Harvard transfer leads the team with 39 catches, 647 yards and four touchdowns and is coming off a career day against the Yellow Jackets.  Terrell, the brother of former Clemson and current Atlanta Falcons corner A.J. Terrell, will be the best Barkate has seen this season. He is the only player in the country responsible for at least seven passes defended and three forced fumbles. Terrell also has one sack, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 28 tackles.  The Clemson corner was also recently named a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, annually presented to the nation's top defensive back.  The Tigers do a good job of mixing coverages, splitting the field between man and zone and running some zone blitzes. Terrell is a bit of a wildcard, however, as Clemson will sometimes have him follow receivers and stay locked up in man.  Given Barkate's 172-yard outburst against Georgia Tech, that might be a wise move on Saturday. The senior receiver is Mensah's favorite target and gets the offense into a rhythm from the jump by separating beyond the numbers. 2026 NFL Draft: College Game Recaps – Week 1 (Aside from Green’s touchdown, Terrell had an impressive game for Clemson to open the season. Early in the first quarter, Terrell flew over from zone coverage to deliver a bone-rattling hit on a LSU receiver and knocked the ball out. A teammate scooped up the fumble and returned it well into LSU territory to set up the Clemson offense with good field position. Shortly later, Terrell had excellent coverage on Aaron Anderson to force an incompletion on third down and get his defense off the field. The one low light was losing to a 6-foot-7 tight end on a jump ball in the end zone, but NFL teams won’t hold that play against Terrell. Renner's NFL Draft summer position rankings: Best CBs (Avieon Terrell - Player type: Undersized do-it-all corner.  Room for improvement: Muscle mass.  Early grade: First round.  If the name and school sound familiar, it's because Avieon Terrell's brother, A.J., was a first-round pick out of Clemson and current shutdown corner for the Falcons. But unlike many of the high-level brother duos we have become accustomed to, Avieon and A.J. are nothing close to carbon copies of each other. While A.J. was a long and smooth boundary corner, Avieon is an undersized lightning rod who can stay in the hip-pocket of pretty much any receiver he faces. While he's played almost exclusively on the outside in his two seasons at Clemson, Avieon's skillset looks tailor-made to dominate in the slot at the next level.  The only thing missing from his game is the sheer mass to hang with the 200-plus-pound receivers he'll have to see on a weekly basis in the NFL.
