Red flags everywhere: Which 2026 NFL Draft prospects could fall?
Carter Bahns (Francis Mauigoa, OT, Miami:  An outstanding three-year Miami career, in which he earned Freshman All-American honors in 2023 and became a consensus All-American in 2025, suggests Francis Mauigoa has the upside to become the first offensive lineman selected.   At the same time, a back issue could scare teams away from making him a top-10 pick. Mauigoa was diagnosed with a herniated disc, per ESPN, and underwent a medical recheck two weeks ago.  While the injury is asymptomatic, it would require surgery if it gets worse. Plus, some teams think it is a matter of when, rather than if, he needs the procedure. These kinds of surgeries generally come with a three-month recovery timeline, so Mauigoa could have the procedure done this offseason and still be ready to go for Week 1. If he waits and the herniated disc worsens during the season, his rookie year could come off the rails.) 2026 NFL Draft: Which blue-chip prospects are at risk of a surprise slide? (Remote possibility due to other options: T Francis Mauigoa, WR Carnell Tate.  Right after the conclusion of the 2025 college football season, you could have classified Francis Mauigoa in the same “highly unlikely” tier as Reese and Bailey, but the emerging presence of Monroe Freeling makes Mauigoa slightly more susceptible to slipping in certain scenarios.  While it appears the majority of the league prefers Mauigoa, who earned higher grades than Freeling in both pass protection and run blocking last season, the Georgia left tackle is objectively the better athlete. Freeling posted faster 40-yard dash and split times, higher vertical and broad jumps and also boasts longer arms than Mauigoa.  Freeling’s production is also difficult to argue against, as he allowed just eight pressures on 434 pass-blocking snaps last season. However, Georgia’s notable lack of true pass sets on offense should be taken into account.  It remains unlikely that Mauigoa will slip into double-digit territory. Albert Breer’s Latest NFL Draft Buzz: Comparing the Top Wide Receivers (Francis Mauigoa:  We wrote about Miami OT Francis Mauigoa’s back issue in the April 13 takeaways, and it’s worth revisiting, while we’re here, the level of risk associated with the Hurricane big man. The teams I’ve talked to say the question on Mauigoa’s clean-up surgery is when he’ll have it done, not if. Some think the right thing to do would be to have it right away. It would sideline him for three months, which would put him in position to return during training camp, and at that point he’d have to get back in football shape to compete to start. The other option would be to put it off until after his rookie year, with the risk being that it flares up at some point and costs him that time in-season. 6 Moves That Could Ruin the First Round of the 2026 NFL Draft (4. Selecting Miami OL Francis Mauigoa in the first half of the first round.  Doug: I have seen Francis Mauigoa mocked as high as Arizona with the third overall pick. To me, it would be a big mistake to take him anywhere in the first half of the first round. Luke, you and I had this discussion before last year’s draft about Will Campbell, and I think we both agreed. We saw SEC edge rushers eat Campbell’s lunch. So if you have to move him inside to guard, where do you then take him? Or if he’s an average tackle, where do you take him? With Mauigoa, the good news with him is he wants to turn every snap into a bar fight. The bad news with him is that he wants to turn every snap into a bar fight. He is an aggressive, glass-eating blocker, but he’s so interested in kicking your ass that he gets radically out of phase in pass pro. I mean, it’s bad. The number of times where he just whiffs on all kinds of things to either side. He’s not someone who’s going to control the arc. I’ve talked to coaches about this — the NFL is so much more a stunt league now than it is a blitz league. You really want to move your fronts and create deception and mess with protections the same way you want to mess with coverages with safety switches. So, that creates other problems. I don’t know what your thoughts on Mauigoa are, but I would struggle to place him in the first round at all. Luke: It’s a glass half-empty/glass half-full thing. I think you’ll see the moments when he does dominate, and he’s so powerful. That play strength just jumps off the tape, and you’re like, man, that’s the tone-setter. That’s the mentality and the style I want to see a guy play with. The dominant reps are dominant, and you can convince yourself. It’s like we just talked about with Ty Simpson, where it’s like, there will be moments of anticipation where you’re like, Oh, if he can be that guy all the time, that’s great. It doesn’t work that way. Like it’s really hard to make that happen, especially when you make that jump in competition. So, I’m with you. I still think he’s a first-round player. I think there’s potential at guard, but I’d love to see him stay at right tackle where he’s comfortable and where he’s played a lot. Just [develop him]; that’s what NFL coaches are paid to do. Get him with a good coaching staff that can smooth out those rough edges and get him more comfortable moving laterally, get him not getting over his skis, make the technique a little more smooth, and keep his balance. 2026 NFL draft intel, notes: What Adam Schefter is hearing (Injury concerns on Mauigoa - Miami offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa is still expected to be the first offensive lineman selected Thursday night despite the fact that sources say he has a herniated disc in his back.  Mauigoa returned to Indianapolis for a medical recheck two weeks before the draft. The back injury is not a significant issue now, and it is asymptomatic, but teams say that if it worsens at all, Mauigoa would then need surgery that could sideline him roughly three months. Some teams think he'll eventually need the surgery at some point either way. 2026 NFL Draft: Five Things To Know With Pick Day Approaching (I think the offensive tackle draft sequence is fascinatingly unpredictable
Francis Mauigoa. Monroe Freeling. Spencer Fano. Kadyn Proctor. Caleb Lomu. Blake Miller. Max Iheanachor. I expect all seven to be first-round picks. All have first-round worthy qualities and long-term starting potential, no doubt about it. All also have at least one legitimate drawback that might make an OT-needy team have real pause at taking them over the others. For Mauigoa, it’s arm length and run game range. Freeling is green and shows some balance issues. Fano has arm length and power concerns. Proctor has battled weight issues and has some eye-popping whiffs. Lomu plays too tall and light. Miller’s hands need work and he’s RT-only. Iheanachor remains much better in theory than on film at this point. What does that mean for the sequence? Great question. Nothing would surprise me, especially with Proctor and Freeling. I can see each being the first offensive player not named Fernando Mendoza to be drafted. I can also just as easily see either of them not being selected until the 20s. 2026 NFL Draft: One concern for each of the top 10 prospects (OT Francis Mauigoa, Miami - Reason to Pass: Oversetting vulnerability.  There are very few holes to poke in Mauigoa’s game. Although his arm length is in the 19th percentile for NFL offensive tackles, it remains adequate thanks to his dense frame and natural flexibility.  One of the smaller areas Mauigoa’s future offensive line coach will look to clean up is his tendency to overset both pre-snap and while kick-sliding into his stance. Whether Mauigoa is compensating for his lack of arm length or is just extremely comfortable dealing with college edge rushers in open space, this has sometimes left him susceptible to rushers attacking his inside shoulder.  Nine of the 14 pressures Mauigoa surrendered during his final year with Miami came when he was beaten on the inside. 2026 NFL Draft: Joel Klatt's Top 10 Offensive Prospects (3. Francis Mauigoa, OT, Miami (Fla.):  What a playoff run not only for Miami, but also for Mauigoa and the offensive line. He played his way up the board as the season went on.  There was a thought, and I heard this during the season, that Mauigoa is great at run blocking, but will need some help in pass protection. I'm sorry, but did we not watch the playoff? He was outstanding in pass protection against some really good defensive ends in the playoff. He gave up nothing against teams that recorded a lot of pressures and sacks during the season. Mauigoa is 6-foot-5, a five-star recruit, a three-year starter and an All-American. I've got no notes. (Francis Mauigoa has had an incredible journey, leaving his American Samoa home for high school football in California. After returning home during covid, he went even further after, attending IMG Academy in Florida. That was a difficult, but massive decision for his family that eventually led to his excellent career at Miami.  NFL teams have brought up the tackle vs. guard debate around his future, which he gave the best possible response: “there are five opportunities to get on the field. I’m making sure I’m taking one of them. I don’t care if it’s guard, tackle or center. I want to be on the field.”  As for practicing against Rueben Bain Jr. over multiple years? He made a passionate statement of his teammate: ‘“Look at the film man…explosive, powerful and he can bend. That bending around the corner is very treacherous. I see that every time at practice…when I hear this stuff about arm length or whatever, just turn on the film. $.05 From The 2026 NFL Draft Combine ($.04--The concept of arm length became a major topic throughout the Combine. Relative to some of the top offensive and defensive linemen, it was an inescapable “yeah, but” part of the discussion.  The offensive tackles also saw a collective hit in arm length. Bain’s Miami teammate, Francis Mauigoa, stands at over 6-foot-5 but offers arm length of just 33 ¼ inches. That might seem long overall, but proportionally, anything under 34 inches long for a guy standing 6-5 ½ is short. Mauigoa fared better in the arm length department than Utah’s Spencer Fano, who is a quarter-inch taller than Mauigoa but sports an arm length more than an inch shorter, barely topping 32 inches. Fano had an outstanding on-field workout in terms of movement and athleticism. But now the conversation about his arm length figures to dominate the draft talk. Can he move inside to guard, where arm length is less critical? For a player known more for movement and finesse on the outside, that’s a difficult projection. Mauigoa’s game looks like it would translate better to playing guard than Fano’s, though the latter showing he’s willing to try some center reps helps a lot.) 10 Offensive Linemen Who Won the NFL Combine (Francis Mauigoa, OL, Miami:  Miami offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa played tackle at Miami, but has been discussed as a potential guard convert due to rumored arm length deficiencies. Well, Mauigoa measured in slightly better than expected with 33.25-inch arms. His arms are long enough to meet thresholds at offensive tackle.  That's a victory for Mauigoa, who should garner momentum for staying at tackle coming out of the NFL Combine. 2026 NFL combine: What We Learned during Saturday's activities in Indianapolis (2. Mauigoa open to position change. Miami offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa has been a right tackle for most of his football life, and for nearly every snap he took in 42 games for the Hurricanes as a three-year starter. But while Mauigoa was dominant in college, he might be asked to move to guard in the NFL.  On Saturday, Mauigoa -- Daniel Jeremiah's No. 12 overall prospect -- confirmed that he's been asked the question in nearly every team meeting so far at the combine. "They have all talked to me about, like, how do I feel if I move to guard? And it's the same thing (each meeting)," Mauigoa said. Thankfully, Mauigoa appeared to see this coming and asked Miami OL coach Alex Mirabal to give him some reps at guard in practice last season as a way to prepare for a potential move at the next level.
