Detroit Lions 2026 Draft Big Board: Top Targets for Every Round (First round - Miami (Fla.) EDGE Akheem Mesidor:  Mesidor, a powerful pass-rusher off the edge, was among the highest Pro Football Focus-graded defensive ends this season (fourth). He earned a 92.5 overall grade for his efforts.  The Miami (Fla.) product would provide the Lions with a legitimate running mate for Pro Bowler Aidan Hutchinson, and help stabilize Detroit’s defensive line. He’d also be a building block for the organization for years to come. He’d be a home-run pick for the Lions at No. 17 overall.) Prediction: The Detroit Lions will walk out of the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft with one of these 10 players (Akheem Mesidor, Edge, Miami:  The most plug-and-play edge in this draft, if you ask us. He was the best run defending edge in the nation in 2025, and he can get him in the pass rush game. He is 25 years old, and he will be 30 when his rookie deal ends, but that also means he has more experience than anyone in this draft.) (4-22-26):  https://atozsports.com/nfl/detroit-lions-news/prediction-the-detroit-lions-will-walk-out-of-the-first-round-of-the-2026-nfl-draft-with-one-of-these-10-players/

Lions NFL Draft needs: Top five prospects for first-round selection (2. Akheem Mesidor, EDGE, Miami;  One-half of the Lions' edge rusher group is about as elite as they come. The other is in flux. Aidan Hutchinson anchors the pass-rushing scheme on the heels of a 14.5-sack campaign, but watched his running mate, Al-Quadin Muhammad, depart in free agency. In comes D.J. Wonnum, who should be a solid stopgap option but averages just five sacks a season and is on a clearly temporary one-year deal. Detroit will continue to search for someone it can pair with Hutchinson in 2027 and beyond.  This is a good year to have a need like that. The 2026 edge rusher class is so deep that there might even be a couple of enticing options available to the Lions in Round 2. That might make them content to wait and fill an even bigger need at pick No. 17, but few would bat an eye if they grabbed one of the best prospects in a stellar crop.  Multiple edge rushers will have already flown off the board through 16 picks, but Akheem Mesidor may very well be available when the Lions go on the clock. Mesidor already has experience playing on the other side of a standout as he did so at Miami with Rueben Bain Jr., and he thrived in that role to the tune of an ACC-leading 12.5 sacks. He commands defenses' respect even when he is the second-best weapon on a defensive front, which makes him a perfect fit next to Hutchinson.  Mesidor is also an older prospect, having played six years of college football. His veteran nature makes him a plug-and-play option who can prove himself in Year 1 when Wonnum is off the field.) (4-21-26):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/lions-2026-nfl-draft-needs/

TWENTYMAN: 10 prospects who make sense for Lions at 17 (7. EDGE Akheem Mesidor, Miami:  Mesidor was a highly productive edge rusher for Miami and enters the draft coming off a 2025 season in which he recorded 12.5 sacks, 17.5 tackles for loss, four forced fumbles and 63 total tackles helping lead Miami to the National Championship Game. Mesidor's 92.5 pass rush grade in 2025 was the seventh highest among all FBS pass rushers. He's got a ton of experience and could thrive in the one-on-one environment most pass rushers the Lions deploy opposite Hutchinson get.) Top 10 players fans are mock drafting to the Lions (4. Miami EDGE Akheem Mesidor — 13% of selections.  A highly-productive pass rusher in college (35.5 sacks over six seasons, 12.5 last year), some have questions about his age (25) and benefiting from teammate Rueben Bain. But he would immediately be the best option opposite Aidan Hutchinson. It’s worth noting Mesidor was selected 33% of the time for Pick 15 (Buccaneers).) Roundtable: Detroit Lions 2026 NFL Draft Preview (2. Who will be the pick at No. 17? Booher: If they stand pat and Fano isn't available, I could see the team going for either Miami EDGE Ahkeem Mesidor or one of the other offensive tackles, be it Georgia's Monroe Freeling, Alabama's Kadyn Proctor or Clemson's Blake Miller. For the sake of predictions, I'll say Proctor if it's not Fano.) (4-19-26):  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/onsi/roundtable-detroit-lions-2026-nfl-draft-preview

Which 2026 NFL Draft prospects could slide to later picks? (DE Akheem Mesidor, Miami (Fla.):  It took the West Virginia transfer six years to finally translate his considerable skill set into consistent production, but Mesidor became a driving force behind the Hurricanes' run to the national championship game. While that trajectory put him on the brink of becoming a first-round draft pick, it also might ultimately hold him out of it.  Mesidor turned 25 earlier this month, and questions about his advanced age have followed him throughout the pre-draft process. Like any good pass rusher, he's had his counter at the ready, calling himself a "seasoned rookie" and pointing out his experience has helped him develop a refined approach he can weaponize right away in the NFL. But while NFL general managers at the scouting combine largely shrugged off the notion of age being a deterrent in evaluations, the advantage conferred by going up against younger and less developed blockers can't be fully ignored. And neither can a lengthy injury history.  On tools and track record alone, Mesidor shouldn't have trouble finding a place in the middle of the first round. And he still might not, with the Buccaneers at 15 and Cowboys at 20 standing out as potential suitors. Yet with two X-factors weighing against him, a slight slide can't be ruled out.) (4-15-26):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2026/04/18/nfl-draft-2026-fall-slide-prospects-akheem-mesidor/89661813007/

2026 NFL Draft burning questions: No. 2 overall pick? First receiver selected? Ty Simpson's draft range? (Will Akheem Mesidor's advanced age cause the edge rusher to slide down the board? There has been a lot of pre-draft chatter about Mesidor's age, as the Miami standout turned 25 earlier this month, but it should not bury his draft stock.  Although his age could be viewed as a long-term concern -- some teams will see him as a one-contract guy who is less likely to command a big payday as a 30-year-old free agent following his rookie deal -- Mesidor's maturity and experience should enable him to make an immediate impact in Year 1. As a polished pass-rushing technician with a high-revving motor that enables him to outwork and outlast his opponents, Mesidor displays the tenacity and toughness needed to emerge as a double-digit sack artist in the NFL. Most importantly, he is a relentless competitor with the blue-collar mentality that makes him an intriguing option for teams looking for worker bees in the trenches.  Based on his game and projected schematic fits, Mesidor should come off the board between Pick Nos. 10 (Bengals) and 22 (Chargers).):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2026-nfl-draft-burning-questions-no-2-overall-pick-first-receiver-selected-ty-simpson-s-draft-range

25 Best NFL Draft Fits For the Lions Ranked by Round and Impact (2. EDGE Akheem Mesidor:  Some have concerns about Mesidor due to his age, as he just turned 25, but there's a lot to like about his play style. He was part of a defense that also included projected first-rounder Rueben Bain, and recorded 12.5 sacks in Miami's run to the championship. He could be an ideal pair for Hutchinson from a production standpoint, as he is an explosive rusher who can terrorize opposing passers.) 2026 NFL Draft top defensive linemen (3. EDGE Akheem Mesidor, Miami:  The motor never stops with Akheem Mesidor, and he and Rueben Bain Jr accounted for the best pass rush duo in college football last season. He possesses position versatility, as he previously played inside at West Virginia. His motor can get him into trouble, however, as he often overplays or overextends, which can lead to missed tackles or being out of position. An NFL D-Line coach who gets him to play under control without losing that patented motor will do him very well.) (4-16-26):  https://www.thebiglead.com/2026-nfl-draft-top-defensive-linemen/

This Round 1 is built for chaos: 10 bold predictions that could hit (4. Three under-the-radar edge rushers - R Mason Thomas - 2024-25: Combined for 22.0 TFL, 15.5 sacks.  This isn't me pushing an R Mason Thomas agenda -- I swear! Once edge rusher Keldric Faulk comes off the board, the class is up for grabs. The second tier of players all have their own questions (Akheem Mesidor's age and injury concerns, Cashius Howell's historically short arms), so we could see a wave of lesser-known prospects sneak into Round 1 and shake up the EDGE board.) Albert Breer’s Mailbag: What Trade Compensation for A.J. Brown Would Look Like (Top edge rushers
From Carl Spackler (@BushwoodCap): Will Zion Young be a first-round pick? If not, what separates the edges that go in front of him?  The Miami guys, Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor, will probably be next, with Bain going in the top 15 or so, and Mesidor likely gone within the top 20 picks.) Ranking the 10 best edge rushers in 2026 NFL Draft (4. Akheem Mesidor, EDGE, Miami (6-3, 259 pounds):  Mesidor developed into a fine bookend to Bain, showing impressive burst on the pass rush in his own right in relation to his bulky frame. He can fit a number of teams with maybe more appeal in a 3-4 than Bain. Draft projection: Mid-to-late first round) (4-15-26):  https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-draft-2026-prospects-edge-rusher-rankings/a12cde571d83ab9dcca568ee

2026 NFL Draft Defensive End Rankings Featuring Rueben Bain Jr. & Zion Young (DE Akheem Mesidor, Miami (6’3” and 260 lbs.):  For an NFL team looking for an attacking pass rusher and an arsenal of weapons, Mesidor should stand tall in this year's draft class. He brings vision, motor, and rhythm to his pass rush, while offering acceleration off the edge. Offenses will look to attack him with power in the run game, but his defense should grade as plus in this area. Mesidor enters the NFL at age 25, with almost a lost season in 2023 due to torn ligaments in his feet. He’s played in 65 college games, leading to 123 tackles, 85 assists, and 35.5 sacks (12.5 in 2025). Unfortunately, Mesidor’s game may not translate as well in the NFL.) 2026 NFL Draft: Where Will the Top Defensive Prospects Land? (DL Akheem Mesidor (Miami): Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 2025 stats (15 games): 12.5 sacks, 17.5 tackles for loss, 4 FFs.  Measurables: 6-foot-3, 259 pounds.  The Bucs signed veteran Al-Quadin Muhammad in free agency but still need a young edge rusher in the fold. Mesidor would not only bring production (12.5 sacks for Miami last season) but also the versatility to play multiple spots. Plus, with six years of college experience, he's more experienced than the typical rookie.  Projected draft slot: No. 15 overall ) (4-15-26):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2026-nfl-draft-top-defensive-prospects-caleb-downs-arvell-reese

NFL Confidential: Scouts, Execs Dish on Most Underhyped, Overhyped 2026 Draft Prospects (Which potential first-round picks should be getting more love? Vacchiano: Two other players that came up as "underrated" players in this draft, in conversations that I had with league sources: Arizona State receiver Jordyn Tyson and Miami (Fla.) edge rusher Akheem Mesidor. As for Mesidor, a scout told me that while he's probably behind the other top edge rusher prospects, his tape is too good to overlook. "I know all the knocks: He’s undersized (6-3, 259), he’s old (25), he’s battled injuries. I get it. But he can play," the scout said. "If he had stayed healthy and played off the edge his entire career, we’d be talking about him as a first-round pick. I’d probably rank him below the top edge rushers (Arvell Reese, David Bailey, Ruben Bain) for all those reasons. But on the field, I don’t think he’s all that far behind them.") (4-12-26):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2026-nfl-draft-underhyped-overhyped-prospects

Ranking the Top Edge Rushers in the 2026 NFL Draft: David Bailey Stands Out (5. Akheem Mesidor, Miami: Mesidor comes with a few concerns because of his injury history and he’ll be a 25-year-old rookie, but there’s no denying he’s productive when available. The 6'3", 259-pound Mesidor uses his strength to his advantage, which helped him rack up 12.5 sacks playing next to Bain on Miami’s defensive line.) Ranking the top 10 edge rushers in the 2026 NFL Draft (5. Akheem Mesidor, Miami, 6-3, 259.  Needed six seasons to put it all together but finally did (12.5 sacks, four forced fumbles). Was he just a grown man (will be 25-year-old rookie) beating up boys? Invents new pass rush moves. Doesn’t take plays off against the run. Only knows full speed.) Overrated, underrated, overdrafted, underdrafted: Sorting 2026 NFL Draft prospects into the right buckets (Overdrafted - Akheem Mesidor:  Days ago, Mesidor turned 25-years-old; a problem for some teams, but not all. A team seeking instant impact performers with playoff ambitions has more incentive to take him. The one-time West Virginia transfer did not break out until his sixth year of college football and is unlikely to have a much higher ceiling. Mesidor is of a similar age to players who signed their second contracts in March. Again, it is not to say he is a bad player, but that is not the profile of a player teams often take in the first round.) (4-10-26):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2026-nfl-draft-overrated-underrated/

2026 NFL Draft sleepers: Why these prospects could rise into Round 1 (Edge Akheem Mesidor, Miami (FL) - Mesidor has two things going against him: Age (he’ll be 25 before the draft) and injury history (multiple foot surgeries). But all it takes is one franchise to see the upside.  Mesidor was Bain’s teammate at Miami and some may like his size, quickness, and length which will help him in run defense - a knock on some of the top edge rushers in this class. His age means he’s far along in his development, with multiple pass-rush moves available to him as a rookie. He’s also been productive in Miami with 67 pressures and 13 sacks in 2025. For playoff teams late in the first round looking for a rotational edge who can support a top line as a rookie, Mesidor makes sense.) (4-10-26):  https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/draft/2026/04/10/2026-nfl-draft-sleepers-round-1-surprises/89306996007/

2026 NFL Draft Intel: The latest on Rueben Bain Jr., conflicting reports on Chris Brazzell, and notes on the Jets and Buccaneers (There is no question that EDGE and linebacker are the two biggest needs for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers entering the draft. As of today, the former feels like the most likely outcome with the No. 15 selection for the team with how those positions stack up. Miami pass rusher Akheem Mesidor would be one I’d keep on everyone’s radar.) 2026 NFL Draft preview: 5 edge rushers that could interest Lions (2. Akheem Mesidor, Miami - 6-3, 259. Did not run 40-yard dash.  Mesidor turned 25 this month, making him one of the older players in this draft class. He's got a first-round grade after recording 63 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks for Miami in his sixth collegiate season this past season. He doesn't see his age as a negative. "You can call me a seasoned rookie," he said the NFL Scouting Combine. "I think I'm coming in more mature with a different approach, different mentality than a lot of younger guys. I think my age could be a plus.") Top 25 Prospects For The Detroit Lions In The 2026 NFL Draft: If the Lions wind up with any of these guys, they had a good draft (2: Akheem Mesidor, Edge, Miami - Average Draft Position: 32nd.  AtoZ Sports big board ranking: 21st.  The Beast Ranking: 28th.  No edge rusher in this draft is more ready to go right now than Mesidor is. We keep talking about run defense a lot when it comes to Detroit. Well, this guy is the top run-defending edge in the class. He had a 90.5 run defense grade in 2025, per Pro Football Focus.  He also had 55 pressures and nine sacks to boot. The concern here is that he will be 25 years old in his rookie season. That might not be a total deal-breaker, but the Lions are probably looking for someone younger.) (4-8-26):  https://atozsports.com/nfl/detroit-lions-news/top-25-prospects-for-the-detroit-lions-in-the-2026-nfl-draft-if-the-lions-wind-up-with-any-of-these-guys-they-had-a-good-draft/

8 options for Detroit Lions’ 17th overall pick in the POD mock (EDGE Akheem Mesidor, Miami:  If the Lions are looking for pure pass rush, Mesidor may be the better edge option. Over six seasons, he’s had 35.5 sacks, including 12.5 last year for the Hurricane. While not the optimal size for an edge setter (6-foot-3, 259), he gives high effort and plays in a physical way that Detroit could certainly still make it work. He’s also 25 years old already.) What does the SackSEER model say about the top edge rushers in the 2026 NFL draft? (Akheem Mesidor, Miami:  SackSEER projection: 21.1 sacks through Year 5.  Scouts Inc. ranking: 22.  Similar historical prospects: Whitney Mercilus, Aldon Smith) (4-5-26):  https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2026/story/_/id/48359548/2026-nfl-draft-edge-rusher-projections-rankings-historical-comps-prospects

The safest pick, biggest gamble and more 2026 NFL Draft superlatives (Current darling I could see falling - I'm a big fan of Akheem Mesidor and think he's the most NFL-ready pass rusher in the class and could be an impact rookie. Still, I could see him slipping for several reasons. He'll be 25 as a rookie and had a foot injury in 2023 that cost him time. He doesn't have the ideal frame or length teams covet on the edge, and he lacks consistent speed-to-power conversion, which is critical at the next level. Mesidor was a great player and teammate at Miami, but it wouldn't surprise me if a team overthinks the measurables.) NFL Draft's top five storylines to watch: Ty Simpson, trades and first-round surprises (EDGE Akheem Mesidor (Miami): The biggest knock against Mesidor is that he turns 25-years-old in a few days, but he ranked top five in the FBS in sacks (12.5), tackles for loss (17.5) and pressures (67). He actually led the ACC in sacks, then kept the pressure up during Miami's four College Football Playoff games, recording 5.5 sacks and 23 pressures.) (4-1-26):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2026-nfl-draft-storylines-ty-simpson/

2026 NFL Draft edge rankings: Rueben Bain Jr., David Bailey headline class with plenty of good (if not great) prospects (7. Akheem Mesidor, Miami:  Age (he will be 25 on draft day) and medicals are going to be Mesidor’s big hang-ups. But, man, he can rush the passer and is relentless in doing so. Mesidor can vary his pass rush moves and has shows the ability to win with an arsenal of moves or with power. He doesn’t have overwhelming length, but can get his hands inside to drive blockers back. He also has aligned across the defensive line over his college career, opening up positional versatility for sub packages at the next level. Mesidor looks like he can be a good secondary pass rusher for a team that plays with relentless energy. But he might be maxed out as a player, too. — NT) (3-31-26):  https://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/article/2026-nfl-draft-edge-rankings-rueben-bain-jr-david-bailey-headline-class-with-plenty-of-good-if-not-great-prospects-211443338.html

The controversial 2026 NFL Draft prospects who are going to go much earlier than what most people are expecting (EDGE Ahkeem Mesidor (Miami):  Mesidor is an older prospect with some legitimate durability concerns, yet the NFL seems to love him. He’s a nuanced pass rusher who should bring a solid booth to an EDGE room, even if he never becomes one of the league’s best sack artists. You will find Mesidor’s name in the back end of round one, or early in the second in most mock drafts. I think the clock starts around pick No. 15 for when Mesidor actually comes off the board.) (3-31-26):  https://atozsports.com/nfl-draft/2026-nfl-draft-prospects-going-higher-than-expected/

2026 NFL Draft EDGE Rankings: David Bailey, Rueben Bain Jr. headline deep, talented class (5. Akheem Mesidor, Miami:  Mesidor is a sixth-year college player who successfully transitioned from defensive tackle to disruptive edge rusher of that span. His lower half is always working in sync with his upper body, throwing disruptive hands with a purpose.  He brings that same tenacity as a run defender, but is also smart and polished. He tracks the ball carrier with his head up and can stack and shed off of blockers. Mesidor doesn’t possess ideal length and will be a 25-year-old rookie, but his pro-ready nature on all three downs should see him come off the board in the first round.) 2026 NFL Draft: Potential NFL player-prospect pairings to get excited about (EDGE Akheem Mesidor, Miami (FL) and EDGE Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions - Mesidor’s age (25 years old in April) may scare some teams off in the first round, but it’s hard to argue against his production in college. He was one of just two Power Four edge defenders to earn top-10 PFF grades as a pass rusher and a run defender in 2025. Sometimes overshadowed by projected top-10 pick Rueben Bain Jr., Mesidor was Miami's best pass rusher (90.9 PFF pass-rush grade, two sacks) in the national championship game against Indiana. The Lions could use an upgrade at the edge position opposite All-Pro Aidan Hutchinson, who led the NFL with 100 pressures in 2025 for the second time in the past three seasons. Al-Quadin Muhammad’s 53 pressures were the second most on the team, but he left for Tampa Bay as a free agent. And beyond him, no other player on the defense generated 25-plus pressures in 2025. At 6-foot-3 and 280 pounds, Mesidor has the frame and production to step in from day one and be an immediate contributor for a team with a win-now mentality.) TWENTYMAN: 7 pro days to watch this week (6. Miami, Mon., March 23 - Who to watch: Miami's terrific edge rushing duo of Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor combined for 22.0 sacks and 33.0 tackles for loss helping the Hurricanes reach the National Championship Game. Both are expected to be first-round picks, and this will be a big day for both players as they opted to skip testing at the Combine to test at Miami's pro day.) What I learned at the NFL combine: Detroit Lions buzz and draft targets (If I had to pick a few names of players who could be fits for the Lions in the first round right now: Monroe Freeling (Georgia), Keldric Faulk (Auburn), Vega Ioane (Penn State), Emmanuel McNeil-Warren (Toledo), Dillon Thieneman (Oregon), Ahkeem Mesidor (Miami), Blake Miller (Clemson), Caleb Lomu (Utah) and Zion Young (Missouri). Subject to change, of course.  10. Curious about the edge class, I asked an NFC defensive coach to rank the following edge rushers: Mesidor, Young, Faulk, Clemson’s T.J. Parker, Oklahoma’s R Mason Thomas and Texas A&M’s Cashius Howell. His order:  1. Faulk, 2. Young, 3. Howell, 4. Mesidor, 5. Thomas, 6. Parker.  Mesidor’s age (24) will be a factor for some teams. Totally understand it. He’s incredibly skilled, and his maturity should be viewed as a plus. I tend to believe the tape will translate, but you do have to factor in age at the time of a second contract.) How 2026 Combine Changed the Detroit Lions Draft Board (While David Bailey and Arvell Reese will both likely be off the board, some combination of Cashius Howell, Keldrick Faulk, Zion Young and Akheem Mesidor could be available.  Of that group, Young profiles as the closest fit to what Detroit has targeted in the past given his production as a run defender. Meanwhile, someone like Faulk or Mesidor could bring more immediate pass-rush production.) (3-1-26):  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/onsi/news/how-2026-combine-changed-detroit-lions-draft-board

Akheem Mesidor, Miami (FL) - PFF Predictive Big Board Rank: 19.  Strengths:  Played every position on the defensive line throughout his college career. So much added juice since going from around 280 pounds to 265 from 2024 to 2025.  First step moved into the top tier in 2025.  Hands have more “pop” at contact than ever.  Some of the quickest hands in the class (Jason Taylor was his DL coach).  Adequate arm length to play 4-3 and 3-4 defensive end.  Good lower-body fundamentals to get off the ball quickly and with power.  Relentless rusher. Motor runs hot.  Weaknesses:  Will be one of the oldest prospects in the class (25 years old in his rookie year).  Quicker after weight loss, but definitely not as strong.  Moved off his spot by offensive tackles too easily in the run game) (2-27-26):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2026-nfl-draft-strengths-weaknesses-top-edge-defender-prospects

2026 NFL Draft: The ideal haul for every team in the first three rounds (Detroit Lions: EDGE Akheem Mesidor, G Chase Bisontis - The Lions’ defense regressed down the stretch last season, with a lack of a secondary pass-rusher a major culprit. Even though he’ll be 25 on draft night, Mesidor would fit the Lions’ win-now mindset and form a dynamic duo with Aidan Hutchinson.  Detroit also should look into bettering its interior offensive line with an early pick. Bisontis (70.7 PFF pass-blocking grade) could compete with Christian Mahogany to start after the latter struggled in his second season.) TWENTYMAN: Combine Day 2 observations (Age is just a number: Miami edge rusher Akheem Mesidor turns 25 in April, making him one of the older players in this draft class. Mesidor is considered a first-round pick after recording 63 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks for Miami in his sixth collegiate season this past season. He doesn't see himself being older as a negative.  "You can call me a seasoned rookie," Mesidor told media members Wednesday. 10 Most Intriguing EDGE Prospects at NFL Scouting Combine (4. Akheem Mesidor (Miami) - While Faulk is 21 years old, Mesidor is 24 and more of a finished product in terms of what he's going to be. He had his true breakout in his sixth college football season, exploding for 12.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss for Miami on its run to the national championship game.  Mesidor's previous career bests were 7 tackles and 10.5 TFLs in 2022, so his 2025 season is what truly vaulted him into first-round potential. Kiper has Mesidor going No. 20 overall to the Dallas Cowboys. Miami FL EDGE Akheem Mesidor says his formal Combine meeting with the Cowboys went well pic.twitter.com/TByLyVtcDB — Tom Downey (@WhatGoingDowney) February 25, 2026) (2-26-26):  https://www.si.com/fannation/college/cfb-hq/news/10-most-intriguing-edge-prospects-at-nfl-scouting-combine-reese-height-faulk-tucker

What We Learned: Six takeaways from NFL combine (6. Mesidor sees advanced age as a feature, not a bug. There's a lot to like about Akheem Mesidor, a relentless pass rusher who earned first-team All-ACC honors this past season with 12.5 sacks, including 5.5 in Miami's four-game College Football Playoff run. As Bucky Brooks' No. 3 edge defender and Daniel Jeremiah's No. 20 overall prospect, Mesidor is widely projected to be a first-round pick. But one potential knock on his draft profile is the advanced age. Having played college football for six years -- two at West Virginia, followed by four with the Hurricanes -- Mesidor turns 25 on April 5, making him one of the older players in this draft class. He doesn't see this as a negative, though.  "You can call me a seasoned rookie," Mesidor said on Wednesday in Indianapolis. "I think I'm coming in more mature with a different approach, different mentality than a lot of younger guys. I think my age could be a plus."  To his point, Mesidor draws steady praise for the maturity of his game, which combines a non-stop motor (SEE: last season's impressive total of 63 tackles, including 17.5 for loss) with a deep bag of pass-rushing moves (tied for fourth in the FBS with 67 pressures, per Pro Football Focus). A native of Ottawa, Canada, the 6-3, 265-pounder believes the prolonged voyage truly refined his skill set, which will allow him to hit the ground running in the NFL.  "Everybody has their own path, everybody has their own timeline -- mine just happened to be six years in college," Mesidor said. "And I was able to continue to learn and grow with these amazing people around me who helped me become the person that I am right now."  One of those people has been Jason Taylor, Miami's defensive line coach for the past three seasons. A Pro Football Hall of Famer with the seventh-most sacks in NFL history (139.5), Taylor has been an invaluable resource for Mesidor.  "I'm always in his office, always in the facility. JT has a couch right there -- I'm always laying on it, we're always talking or watching film," Mesidor said. "He's been a tremendous help and like a mentor to me throughout this whole process."  A product of Akron, Taylor wasn't drafted until midway through the third round (No. 73 overall) back in 1997. Mesidor appears set to come off the board much earlier in a couple months. But that's also a testament to Taylor's tutelage.  "He was tremendous in the league, a legend," Mesidor said. "And he taught me how to be a professional, how to approach the game, how to approach the way you eat, sleep, train, all these different things."  -- Gennaro Filice) (2-25-26):  https://www.nfl.com/news/2026-nfl-combine-what-we-learned-during-wednesday-s-activities-in-indianapolis

Lions could look to talented & deep draft class for EDGE help ("I think I'm a relentless football player and very intelligent," Mesidor said. 4 things that were revealed about the Detroit Lions on Day 2 of the NFL Combine (The Lions are meeting with some of the big names at edge:  The two big names the Lions had formal meetings with this week were Miami’s Akheem Mesidor and Clemson’s T.J. Parker. Both of these guys could be there for the Lions with the 17th pick, and they could very well be the route they go. Personally, I lean toward Mesidor at 17. He’s an older player at 25, but he’s ready to go right now. He can jump into the starting lineup on Day 1.) Detroit Lions Mock Draft: Immediate help for a team built to contend (Round 1, Pick 17: ED Akheem Mesidor, Miami - Mesidor may not be a fit for every team in Round 1, given that he turns 25 in April, but Detroit’s win-now window makes his age far less concerning. The Lions need immediate contributors, and Mesidor fits that mold. He posted a 20.8% pass-rush win rate in 2025, totaling 13 sacks and 102 total wins.) 21 prospects our NFL Draft expert can’t wait to see at the scouting combine (Akheem Mesidor, edge, Miami:  Often labeled the “other” Miami pass rusher, Mesidor played his way out of Bain’s shadow this season. Mesidor has had multiple injuries to his feet, so his medicals will be critical.) (2-23-26):  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7062140/2026/02/23/nfl-draft-2026-combine-prospects-to-watch-risers/

2026 NFL Draft: Top 50 Prospects at the Scouting Combine (36. Akheem Mesidor, Edge, Miami:  As a sixth-year collegiate athlete, Mesidor (24) was literally a man amongst boys for Miami a year ago, leading the ACC with 10.5 sacks and forcing four fumbles. He wins in more ways than perhaps any rusher in this class, pairing impressive physical traits such as burst, bend and power with refined hand play and nuanced counter moves.) 2026 NFL Combine preview: 10 EDGE rushers the Lions should be scouting (In the hunt at No. 17. Akheem Mesidor, EDGE, Miami (6-foot-3, 273):  While Faulk is one of the youngest in the class, Mesidor is one of the oldest, as he will turn 25 in April. However, his six seasons in college football have afforded him an out-of-the-box ready skill set that is perfect for a contender like the Lions. While Mesidor has flashed potential for a few seasons, Hall-of-Famer Jason Taylor (position coach) unlocked his potential this past season, and the results were impressive.  Mesidor displays natural explosive upfield quickness, a relentless motor, and a power-based attack that stiffles an opponent’s rushing attacks. While he’ll get knocked for his age, his experience shows up when exploring his technique and skill set. He deploys tremendous instincts, aggressive hands with elite timing, and strings together a deep bag of pass-rushing moves that go unmatched in this class. His ability to marry his hands and feet, combined with a deceivingly effective bend, and the intelligence to customize his attack against specific offensive linemen, will keep him on the field in every situation. He sets a firm edge, wipes out tight end blocking attempts, and overwhelms guards when pushing inside.  Overall, Mesidor’s age likely won’t bother the Lions, who are looking for a ready-to-play edge. And after scheming to defend Vikings’ Jonathan Greenard twice a season, they understand the value and effectiveness of a player with Mesidor’s skill set.) Top 5 edge rushers for the Detroit Lions at the 2026 NFL Combine (Akheem Mesidor, Edge, Miami - Average Draft Position: 56th.  A to Z Sports big board ranking: 31st.  We keep talking about run defense. Well, this guy is the top run-defending edge in the class. He had a 90.5 run defense grade in 2025, per Pro Football Focus. He also had 55 pressures and nine sacks to boot. The concern here is that he will be 25 years old in his rookie season. That might not be a total deal-breaker, but the Lions are probably looking for someone younger. Then again, he might be the most ready to play right now guy of the bunch because of that age.) 5 Defensive Ends Lions Must Monitor at 2026 NFL Scouting Combine (Akheem Mesidor, Miami:  A big part of the Hurricanes' run to the national championship game was the performance of the pass-rush, with Mesidor playing a big role in that opposite of Rueben Bain. Mesidor played six collegiate seasons, finally breaking out in his final one at Miami with 12.5 sacks.  There will be concerns about Mesidor's long-term viability, as he will be 25 years old as a rookie. However, his overall development indicats that he'll be ready to contribute right away and that could lead teams to avoid the concerns about his age. Indiana vs. Miami: Top NFL Draft Prospects to Watch in National Championship (Edge defender Akheem Mesidor, Miami:  A versatile and highly productive rusher, Mesidor’s physical traits and high-effort style of play give him a high floor when projecting pro success. His ceiling will depend on his ability to fine-tune his technique and widen his array of pass-rushing moves, but teams will have to weigh how early to value that floor and potential ceiling for a player who will be pushing 30 when he hits his second contract.) (1-19-26):  https://athlonsports.com/nfl/indiana-miami-national-championship-2026-nfl-draft-fernando-mendoza-carson-beck-rueben-bain-jr

2026 NFL Draft Prospects to Watch in National Championship: Fernando Mendoza, Rueben Bain Jr. Face Off (Akheem Mesidor, EDGE, Miami:  While Bain gets all the name recognition, Akheem Mesidor actually grades a lot closer to Bain on my board than you’d expect.  The big sticking point for Mesidor’s evaluation will be his age; he’s set to be a 25-year-old rookie. But he’ll be an instant impact NFL player.  At around 6’2 1/2″ and 273 pounds, Mesidor is a strong, lean, and well-leveraged defender whose entire career has been a testament to his vast hand usage arsenal and alignment versatility.  Mesidor is explosive, powerful, relentless, and exceedingly well-rounded in all phases, and he’s a particularly strong fit for win-now teams in need of a rotational infusion.) He lacks ideal length, but that didn't stunt his production this season, as he posted 10.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. Mesidor has taken his game to another level at 24 years old, to the point that he's now a likely top-50 overall selection. Tuipulotu blossomed immediately with the Chargers under the tutelage of Jim Harbaugh and Jesse Minter.) 2026 NFL Draft: 12 prospects to watch in National Championship (Mesidor starts on the opposite edge from Bain, offers a similar skill set, a bit less production, but even more positional range. He’s often left out of the first round conversation because he will turn 25 just ahead of the NFL Draft, but he’s such a good stylistic fit for the Lions that they could consider him in the first round. Mesidor is already committed to attending the Senior Bowl, but with practices expected to start in about a week, it’s not clear whether he’ll participate or simply attend to use the event as an opportunity to start building relationships with NFL teams.(1-19-26):  https://www.prideofdetroit.com/detroit-lions-draft/155711/2026-nfl-draft-12-prospects-to-watch-in-miami-vs-indiana-cfp-national-championship

Three stars of Miami defense who could make instant impact for Lions (Akheem Mesidor, edge:  Bain's running mate, Mesidor is much more likely to be on the board at No. 17. He doesn't boast the same elite traits as Bain, but plays the same complete game and had even more production this season with 10.5 sacks, 15.5 tackles for loss and four forced fumbles. Nothing wrong with benefiting from playing opposite a top-tier defensive end, which is exactly what Mesidor would be doing in Detroit. Of note: Mesidor is completing his sixth college season and turns 25 in April, so it's fair to wonder how much more upside exists here.) Miami Hurricanes Players Lions Should Scout During National Championship (EDGE Akheem Mesidor:  Akheem Mesidor has been the unsung hero of Miami’s EDGE tandem, with Rueben Bain Jr. receiving most of the love and praise. Mesidor has had his own outstanding season, with the senior recording a career-high 10.5 sacks for the Hurricanes.  In each of his five full seasons of collegiate football, Mesidor has recorded at least four sacks. He is the definition of productive and experienced. However, he comes with concerns that scares some scouts away.  Mesidor has had his fair share of injuries, missing a contest this season, missing most of 2023 and even missing time in the last outing against Ole Miss. On Monday, he’ll be wearing a brace as a precaution. After the struggles to see a talented EDGE rusher on the field with the Marcus Davenport experiment in Detroit, the front office could shy away.  Additionally, the senior will be 25 when the NFL season begins. He is older than most of the draft class, and that gives him a shorter window and length for his prime. He has concerns on balance, block shedding and cutting inside to give up leverage.  That said, he produces, and showcases a variety of skills. Currently, he is a projected Day 2 pick, but that can slide into Day 1 with his hyperproduction.  Instant Impact Score: 84. If he can remain healthy, he will be a steal of a second-round pick, or worthy of a first-round selection. However, health and age are big concerns. With Detroit’s recent injury history, drafting an oft-injured player asks for trouble.) Ranking top NFL draft prospects from Miami, Indiana in CFP title game (4. Akheem Mesidor, DE, Miami (Fla.):  Bain's brilliance might typically blot out all other contributors on a formidable defensive line. Mesidor, however, has emerged as a serious riser this season. The Ottawa native and former West Virginia transfer has racked up 10½ sacks, with his production unlocked by his tenacity and savvy as a pass rusher. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound Senior Bowl invitee will turn 25 in April and could be an early liability in the run game, but he shapes up as an instant impact presence in creating pressure off the edge.) 2026 NFL Draft: Ranking the 10 Best Prospects in the CFP National Championship (4. Akheem Mesidor, Edge, Miami:  The aforementioned Smith and the Hoosiers will have their toughest matchup of the year with the Hurricanes’ gauntlet of future NFL defensive linemen, including Mesidor, a 6-foot-3, 280-pounder who led the ACC with 10.5 sacks in 2025. The 24-year-old Mesidor proved to be literally a man amongst boys at the collegiate level this year, with the sixth-year collegian also generating career highs in tackles (60), tackles for loss (15.5) and forced fumbles (four), along with his QB takedowns. Mesidor’s stumpy frame and advanced age could push him down the board a bit, but he’s one of the best pass-rushers of this class, winning with burst, power and refined hand play, as well as a relentless motor. Equally effective out of the two- and three-point stance, he is the type of disruptive presence that is going to one day be considered a steal if he slips out of the first round.  Current projection: Top 50.  NFL comparison: Frank Clark (retired)) (1-16-26):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2026-nfl-draft-ranking-10-best-prospects-cfp-national-championship

Miami vs Indiana: NFL Draft Prospects Who Can Raise Stock (Akheem Mesidor, EDGE, Miami:  Miami defensive end Akheem Mesidor has been a big riser throughout the College Football Playoff. Terrorizing opposing offensive lines opposite Bain, the Ottawa, Ontario, Canada native registered two sacks in the upset win over Ohio State. Mesidor is a true hand-in-the-dirt defender with three-down potential.  Scouts have begun wondering if Mesidor could enter the first-round conversation. The draft got a little weaker on the defensive line when A'Mauri Washington and Matayo Uiagalelei both decided to go back to Oregon. A prospect like Mesidor could benefit.) 2026 NFL Draft: PFSN’s Consensus Top 10 Edge Rushers Include Rueben Bain Jr., Arvell Reese (8. Akheem Mesidor, Miami (FL):  A sixth-year senior who turns 25 right before the 2026 NFL Draft, Akheem Mesidor’s journey to becoming a top edge rusher prospect has been a bizarre one. He played nose tackle at West Virginia and eventually transferred to Miami in 2022. He missed most of 2023 due to injury, but he ended his collegiate career with 33.5 sacks and 50.5 tackles for a loss in 63 games.  Mesidor is a versatile defensive lineman who can line up just about anywhere along the line. He converts speed to power well with a strong lower half and good pad level, and he knows when and how to free up his hands to make tackles against the run. Akheem Mesidor NFL Draft Projections: Top 5 Potential Landing Spots for Miami EDGE (1-8-26):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/akheem-mesidor-nfl-draft-projections-semifinals-2026/

2026 NFL Draft Stock Report ( Akheem Mesidor, DE, Miami:  Bain and Akheem Mesidor were very good in 2025, and they kept up their excellent play in the playoff game against Ohio State. On the opening drive, Mesidor looped to the inside to get a third-down sack with Bain being a step behind him. Shortly later in the first quarter, Bain pushed through the Buckeyes’ left tackle to get a tackle for a loss. Early in the second quarter, Bain worked off the left guard to get a coverage sack of Julian Sayin. Shortly later, Sayin broke two tackles and kept retreating, but Mesidor cleaned up the scramble after getting by the right tackle to get his second sack of the first half.  Mesidor has speed off the edge and plays with good leverage. Miami Hurricanes Are No Fluke (Mesidor has possibly been the best story on this Hurricanes defense. An undervalued prospect no more, the Ottawa, Ontario, Canada native is up to 10.5 sacks this season. Mesidor recorded five tackles and two sacks versus the Buckeyes.  On this rep, Mesidor records the sack on this successful stunt with Bain. Communication and execution were consistent problems for Ohio State's offensive line. Mesidor lived in the backfield) (1-1-26):  https://thedraftnetwork.com/2026/01/01/miami-hurricanes-cfp-run

2026 NFL Draft: College Game Recaps – CFP Quarterfinal (Miami’s defensive end tandem of Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor was very good in 2025, and they kept up their excellent play in the playoff game against Ohio State. In the second half, the Buckeyes did a better job of neutralizing Bain and Mesidor by attacking the Hurricanes’ defense up the middle on the ground. Mesidor made a tackle in the fourth quarter, chasing down a back out of his gap. Later on that possession, Bain tripped rushing the quarterback and was close to a sack, but caught a lucky break when the referee called a non-existent hold on Ohio State. A couple plays later on a critical third down, Mesidor and Bain put pressure on Sayin to force a check down.  For the NFL, Bain looks like a prospect for the middle of the first round. He is strong and quick at the point of attack. Bain shows a nice ability to shed and scrap with offensive linemen. On top of his functional strength, Bain has some speed to close, and he plays hard. Bain has an excellent motor, and he gets some sacks based on his effort. However, Bain is a tweener, as he lacks the height and length to be an NFL defensive end and the weight to be an NFL defensive tackle. Thus, some sources have him lower than others in the media.  Mesidor has speed off the edge and plays with good leverage. He is quick to close and shows an ability to use his hands and feet at the same time. With agility and loose hips, Mesidor can redirect and weave through traffic. Some team sources have said they think Mesidore could be a day-two pick. However, Mesidor could rise in the lead-up to the draft and may end up being a candidate for the back half of the first round.) (1-1-26):  https://walterfootball.com/draft2026recap_17.php

Three takeaways from Ohio State's shocking loss in the Cotton Bowl (The Hurricanes’ defensive line dominates Ohio State - The Buckeyes were completely outmatched in the trenches against Miami. Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin was sacked five times, with Hurricane defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor accounting for two, while three other Miami defenders tacked on one each. Pass protection wasn’t the only issue for Ohio State’s offensive line.) Miami Players NFL Scouts Will Be Watching in the Cotton Bowl (Akheem Mesidor, EDGE - PFSN EDGE Impact: 80.5, B-.  One of the unsung heroes on the Miami defense is EDGE rusher Akheem Mesidor, who has accounted for 8.5 sacks and four forced fumbles this season. NFL Draft Prospects Playing Today: Carnell Tate, Rueben Bain Jr., Francis Mauigoa Some Future Stars to Watch (Akheem Mesidor, EDGE, Miami:  While Bain gets all the name recognition, Akheem Mesidor actually grades a lot closer to Bain on my board than you’d expect. He’s explosive, powerful, relentless, and exceedingly well-rounded in all phases.) (12-31-25):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-draft-prospects-watch-tate-bain-mauigoa/

5 Players Detroit Lions Must Scout from Ohio State-Miami CFP Game (EDGE Akheem Mesidor, Miami:  Mesidor is a player that has slotted as both an EDGE and defensive tackle before, and a massive upside is his versatility in rushing the passer at either spot. There is a reason why he enters the 2026 draft as a top-10 EDGE rusher, too.  The EDGE defender is in the middle of his best season to date, and his 1.5 sacks against Texas A&M, along with his five sacks in his final five contests, have put the country on notice. He will have an excellent battle with Siereveld, with both players having a lot to gain from the matchup.  However, durability and the injury bug have dragged Mesidor down some draft boards. That said, Detroit and Brad Holmes have been known to select injured players, as evidenced by their selections of Jameson Williams and Hendon Hooker.  Mesidor would pair excellently with Aidan Hutchinson and Al-Quadin Muhammad, if the latter returns. The Lions need an EDGE to pair with Hutchinson, and Mesidor could be the answer.) (12-31-25):  https://www.si.com/nfl/lions/onsi/news/5-players-detroit-lions-must-scout-ohio-state-miami-cfp-game

4 Underrated NFL Draft prospects to watch for in NYE CFP Quarterfinal (Akheem Mesidor, DL: Mesidor is listed as a defensive lineman here because he is a collegiate edge rusher, but measures more like an NFL interior defensive lineman. He projects more as a late Day 2 or Day 3 selection as a sixth-year player, but Mel Kiper thinks he's a Top 25 talent on the draft board.  He has 51 tackles, 8.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles on the 2025 season, and has tallied more than 30 sacks over the course of his collegiate career. On film, he possesses both elite athleticism, given his size constraints compared to other NFL defensive ends, and the versatility to shift across the line. He will be a valuable mid- to late-draft pickup.) 6 best prospects in Texas A&M vs. Miami in College Football Playoffs (Akheem Mesidor (EDGE), Miami:  As noted earlier, Miami’s defensive line has given opponents headaches all season. While Bain draws most of the attention, he’s complemented by another impactful rusher in Mesidor. Mesidor is a stout, versatile defender who can slide inside when needed, and in some ways his production has been more consistent than Bain’s in 2025. Five Prospects Who Improved Their 2026 NFL Draft Stock in Week 13 (Akheem Mesidor, edge, Miami:  Perhaps overshadowed by consensus first-round pick and pass-rushing teammate Rueben Bain Jr., Mesidor has been brilliant this season for the Hurricanes. He finished with eight quarterback pressures, according to Pro Football Focus, the fourth-most in the FBS in Week 13. Mesidor will be a tricky evaluation for scouts, because he turns 25 in April. 2026 NFL Draft: College Game Recaps – Week 6 (Miami defensive ends Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor have played well this season, and that continued against the Seminoles. Early in the first quarter, Mesidor got a tackle for a loss coming up blocked on a zone read run. Late in the second quarter, Mesidor worked upfield and then cut to the inside to collapse the pocket and chase down quarterback Tommy Castellanos for a sack. Both Mesidor and Bain were active in run defense and chasing down Castellanos on designed runs. Bain had some good pass rushes as well. But Bain did have some penalty issues. He jumped offsides in the second quarter and shortly later, Bain was unblocked and tracked a back down from behind to rip him down for a loss. But Bain grabbed the nameplate and was called for a horse-collar penalty.  For the NFL, Bain looks like a prospect for the back half of the first round or a day-two pick.
