2026 NFL Draft: Five Things To Know With Pick Day Approaching (I think the offensive tackle draft sequence is fascinatingly unpredictable
Francis Mauigoa. Monroe Freeling. Spencer Fano. Kadyn Proctor. Caleb Lomu. Blake Miller. Max Iheanachor. I expect all seven to be first-round picks. All have first-round worthy qualities and long-term starting potential, no doubt about it. All also have at least one legitimate drawback that might make an OT-needy team have real pause at taking them over the others. For Mauigoa, it’s arm length and run game range. Freeling is green and shows some balance issues. Fano has arm length and power concerns. Proctor has battled weight issues and has some eye-popping whiffs. Lomu plays too tall and light. Miller’s hands need work and he’s RT-only. Iheanachor remains much better in theory than on film at this point. What does that mean for the sequence? Great question. Nothing would surprise me, especially with Proctor and Freeling. I can see each being the first offensive player not named Fernando Mendoza to be drafted. I can also just as easily see either of them not being selected until the 20s. $.05 On NFL Pro Day Conversations With NFL Personnel ($.02--Kadyn Proctor is going higher than I expected.  In the course of talking about the offensive tackle class with both subjects (independently), I was surprised at how highly their teams valued Alabama OT Kadyn Proctor.  I’m not a big fan of Proctor; he’s my No. 71 overall player. His balance issues and strong tendency to overextend and simultaneously drop his head are very real issues for me. Even so, I still anticipated Proctor being a likely first-round pick. His athleticism at his size, as well as his good film at Alabama, is legit. I did not expect him to be a viable candidate to be the first offensive lineman off the board, however.  I might need to rethink that. Both teams view Proctor as someone they expect will be selected in the first “15 or so picks,” to quote one. The area scout revealed that his team very strongly believes that Proctor will be a top-10 pick. After noting my flabbergasted reaction, he reminded me that NFL coaches--even more than scouts and front offices--covet size. 2026 NFL Combine results: 12 winners from the offensive tackle/guard group (Offensive tackles -  Kayden Proctor, LT, Alabama (6-foot-5 1/2, 352):  A mountain of a prospect, Proctor arrived at Alabama weighing over 400 pounds and listened to the NFL when they told him that he’d need to lose weight to start at the next level. Now at 352 pounds, Proctor is a scary athlete for his size, running a 1.84 10-yard-split and earning a 9.28 RAS.  Proctor explodes with his first step, displaying light feet and lateral agility. He was great in pass protection drills, mirroring with a solid gate, wasting little movement, and not relinquishing any ground. His pass pro slide was average in speed, but when he anchored and engaged the bag, he hit it with so much power that it knocked the coach back, and his hat flew off his head. When moving laterally, there was more hopping (both feet off the ground) than I would prefer, but he showed strong pulls when allowed a smooth corner, and ran into more difficulty when asked to plant and change direction. His dip-and-pull was on equal level with any guard, and proved more efficient when allowed to let his momentum roll.  As for fit with the Lions, the NFL broadcast brought it up multiple times, comparing his size and athleticism to that of Penei Sewell (though they were quick to remind that this comparison was to size/weight/speed), and analyst Charles Davis even went as far as to say, “he just looks like a Lion”, at least twice.) The 5 most-likely Lions 1st-round picks entering the Combine (Kadyn Proctor, OT, Alabama:  Proctor stands 6-foot-7 and played at a weight over 365, and still he looked like one of the most athletic players on the field at Alabama. That in and of itself draws a lot of attention to Proctor, the Crimson Tide’s starting LT for the last three seasons.  Many expect Proctor to test quite well in athletic metrics, myself included. It’s the “playing actual football” part that brings the question marks out for Proctor. He’s an unrefined technician, and his technique–especially in pass protection–looks the same as it did when he arrived on campus. Proctor often annihilates straight bull rushes, and EDGEs without a real plan are easy pickings. Rushers who can cross his face or get into and then out of his chest remain a major issue for Proctor, who is more passive and reactive than the other OTs listed here. His style of play might be more suitable for guard, but Proctor’s massive size could be an issue for a pocket-centric QB like Jared Goff if he moves inside.  Of the quintet listed here, Proctor is handily the easiest to project falling out of consideration during the Combine week. Alabama · OT · Junior - Will his weight work for him or against him -- and could he be a better NFL guard than tackle?  The former five-star recruit has been a household name since stepping onto Alabama's campus as a Day 1 starter, interrupted only by a brief transfer to and from Iowa between the 2023 and '24 seasons. The 6-foot-7, 366-pounder has otherwise flashed dominant potential as a blind-side protector. At times in his career, he showed sloppy footwork and shaky balance, which, to my eye, could often be attributed to his weight -- Proctor says he topped 400 pounds as a freshman. But he subsequently made weight loss a focus and played much better down the stretch in 2025. While incredibly gifted, he’s become too dependent on his natural gifts, and as a result, his technique has become inconsistent and flawed at times. As a pass protector, his feet are surprisingly quick, and he works to stay in a rhythm with his footwork, but if his timing wavers or his concentration of his surroundings lapses, he’ll miss blocks. These inconsistencies in space have led some analysts to project him inside to guard. However, he is must-watch television. The lineman has also had the production to back it up. 2026 NFL Draft: College Game Recaps – Week 14 (There was a great draft matchup in this game with Alabama left tackle Kayden Proctor taking on Auburn edge rushers Keldric Faulk and Keyron Crawford. In the first quarter, Crawford came close to a sack after making a good read and coming unblocked to force a throwaway from Ty Simpson. The next play, Crawford pressured Simpson coming on a stunt around the line, and Falk was right there as well after getting off a block from Proctor using power and quickness. Later in the first quarter, a run went away from Faulk, but he chased it down from the backside for a big tackle. Shortly later, Faulk came close to a sack using speed to fire around Proctor and get a hit on Simpson. Crawford added another near sack, getting through a tight end for a hit on Simpson. Overall, this was a good tape that will help Faulk and Crawford and shows that Proctor needs some work for the NFL.) 2026 NFL Draft: College Game Recaps – Week 7 (There was an excellent draft matchup in this game with Alabama left tackle Kayden Proctor taking on the Missouri edge rush tandem of Zion Young and Damon Wilson. Young and Wilson have been superb this year and have combined to be extremely effective at pressuring the quarterback. The massive Proctor looks like a potential top-20 pick next April, so he would be a great test for the Tigers tandem.  Early in the first quarter, Young made a stupid decision when a teammate of his made a tackle for a loss on a screen pass, and Young decided to get in the face of Alabama wide receiver Germie Bernard to taunt him. That penalty took away a third-and-15 and gave the Crimson Tide a first down. Later in the drive, Young jumped offside, which gifted another first down. In the second quarter, Young pushed through the right tackle and right guard to get pressure on Ty Simpson while slapping down the pass.  In the second quarter, Wilson made a huge play on a third down, fighting through the tight end and the right tackle to get a sack of Ty Simpson. It was a phenomenal rush showing power to fight off blocks, speed to close, and agility to get turned to the quarterback.  At the very start of the third quarter, a teammate was sacking Simpson when Young joined in and punched the ball out from behind. Wilson was being blocked by Proctor, but Wilson saw the loose ball and dove on it for a huge turnover for Missouri. Shortly later, Proctor didn’t get into the chest of his rusher and allowed the defender to cut to the inside and hit Simpson. Later in the second quarter, Wilson pushed into the chest of Proctor before looping back to the inside to get a hit on Simpson. Midway through the fourth quarter, Wilson blew by the right tackle with a speed rush and ripped down Simpson for Wilson’s second sack of the game.  This tape should help both Young and Wilson. Pro evaluators won’t like the penalties on Young and his lack of discipline, but Young showed speed and athleticism at the point of attack. Both Young and Wilson are fast to get upfield, agile to redirect, and have functional strength to shed blocks. This tape should help Young and Wilson be first- or second-round picks next April.  Overall, this was not an impressive tape from Proctor. While he wasn’t abused or dominated, he allowed some hits on the quarterback, and he showed some technique flaws by not latching onto rushers and letting them break free to the inside on numerous occasions. Proctor looked better in the ground game. He pushed open some lanes in the ground game and got a push on the goal line to open a scoring lane that was called back. 2026 NFL Draft: College Game Recaps – Week 5 (Alabama has been a factory in recent years for early-round offensive tackle prospects, and left tackle Kayden Proctor could continue that trend in 2026. Proctor was facing a fast and athletic Georgia front with players who would play on Sundays. Overall, Proctor was solid, but he illustrated that he needs development at the pro level.  In the first half, Proctor was generally reliable in pass protection and contributed to the rushing offense. In the final seconds of the first half, Alabama ran a trick play with Proctor as a tackle eligible. They shockingly threw a screen pass to Proctor, and he rumbled for 11 yards, bouncing off tacklers and blockers. It was a shocking and impressive play from Proctor.  In the third quarter, Proctor got in some trouble and was pushed to the side in pass protection when he got off balance. Proctor had a few plays where he had his man blocked, but gave up some penetration on second efforts.  For the NFL, Proctor has the ability to play as a pro, but he needs refinement. Proctor is said to have lost weight and is checking in at 359 pounds. That trend will need to continue for the NFL, as he could have issues with speed rushers and balance. He has a propensity to play a little too high and needs to improve his ability to bend at the knee, but his mass is so tough to move that even when his positioning is not perfect, defensive linemen struggle to win on a bull rush.
