2026 NFL draft: Mel Kiper's favorite prospects by position (Avieon Terrell, Clemson; D'Angelo Ponds, Indiana; Chandler Rivers, Duke:  I went three-deep at cornerback, but Terrell, Ponds and Rivers are all somewhat similar as prospects. All three have versatility, but are likely slot corners in the NFL. Terrell is 5-foot-11 and 186 pounds. Ponds is 5-foot-9 and 182 pounds. And Rivers is 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds. Not the most ideal size across the board.  But they all play a spunky brand of football. They maximize their ability with sound route recognition, good awareness and a knack for making plays. Ponds used his explosion (43½-inch vertical jump at the combine) and ball skills to tally seven picks and 27 pass breakups over three seasons. Rivers nearly matched Ponds, with seven INTs and 23 pass breakups over four years. He locates the ball well and can then plant and drive with his 4.4 speed. And Terrell can flip his hips, stick on even the fastest receivers and then find the ball at just the right moment. He had three picks and 27 pass breakups over three seasons.  Terrell, Ponds and Rivers aren't shy about contact despite their frames. They're tough cornerbacks. And I'd bet all three do a lot of the same impactful things they did in college -- pick off passes, force fumbles, block kicks, etc. -- in the pros. Terrell and Ponds are second-rounders to me, and I'd say Rivers comes off the board in the third or fourth round.) He is from South Florida, so he's another that plays with the South Florida swagger. He played outside corner at Indiana, but some teams will move him inside to nickel because of his size. That would be a mistake. I think he can hold up outside. He is a competitor who fights and has the speed to hold up in man coverage. He also will throw his body around as a tackler. I love his game. 2026 Scouting Combine: Avieon Terrell, D’Angelo Ponds, and More Cornerbacks Detail Their Best Plays (D’Angelo Ponds, Indiana:  I tend to favor smaller cornerbacks who think they can play outside and actually prove it over time; maybe it’s from watching Antoine Winfield Sr. for all those years. In any case, when it comes to Indiana’s D’Angelo Ponds, I don’t care what his measurables are because while he will be of slot defender size (an unofficial 5-foot-9 and 173 pounds), Ponds can absolutely play outside, and both of his favorite plays proved it. Overall for the national champs in 2025, Ponds played 57% of his snaps outside, and more as an overhang defender than in the slot. So, he’s not your typical smaller cornerback. Overall last season, Pounds allowed 32 catches on 54 targets for 379 yards, 57 yards after the catch, no touchdowns, two interceptions, nine pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 55.4. Obviously, Ponds’ pick-six against Oregon in the College Football Playoff Semifinal was the big play to mention. “Yeah, first play I would say is the Oregon play, the first play of the game,” Ponds told me. “I feel like a lot of [NFL] coaches play that in the meetings. Every coach really started their meeting off with that play, so I would say that was one of them.”  How does he explain this play to NFL shot-callers? “Just showed them my football IQ, how I watch film and study quarterbacks and knowing quick game, knowing the ball had to come out fast and things like that, and that’s basically how I broke that play down to them.” Quarterback Dante Moore was trying to hit receiver Malik Benson on a quick throw to get things going to start the game, but Pounds was all over it, and a 25-yard score was the result. That was the first step in Indiana’s 56-22 demolition of Oregon. For his second play, Pounds went back to the playoffs, and Indiana’s 38-3 win over Alabama in the Quarterfinal. Pounds was playing off coverage outside with eyes on quarterback Ty Simpson, who decided to use his legs for a big gain — something he probably regretted when Pounds met him on the field. “Another play I would say is the playoffs against Alabama, against Ty Simpson, just showing off my physicality, being that guy, [people] seeing me as a smaller guy, but showing them I can be physical, too.” Yet another reason to avoid underestimating D’Angelo Ponds.) Indiana Hoosiers Players Lions Must Scout During National Championship (DB D’Angelo Ponds:  Ponds is an impact defensive back, as evidenced by his game-opening pick-six in the semifinals against Oregon. His impact was not done for that day, either, as Ponds found himself playing some offense for the first time late in the half.  Ponds has seven career interceptions, and that comes from having some top-tier speed and athleticism. He also is a willing tackler, and does not miss many despite his small frame, checking in at 5-foot-9.  Unfortunately, that same frame is the main concern for Ponds. He is smaller than most NFL cornerbacks, and he does not project to have a massive wingspan to make up for it.  Ponds is a playmaker, but the physicality jumps up another step in the NFL. He has the skills and tools to pass as a nickel or safety, but that necessitates a learning curve. And even then, Ponds’ frame scares away the scouts.  Detroit could use a few more playmakers in Kelvin Sheppard’s secondary, and Ponds certainly is one. The man is a menace. He was a menace as a true freshman for James Madison when he only allowed 259 yards on 437 coverage snaps, and he was a menace after transferring up to the Big 10 and only allowing 263 yards on 436 coverage snaps last fall.  In the same way that undersized defensive tackles like Geno Atkins use their innate leverage to their advantage in the trenches, Ponds does so on the outside. He gets under taller receivers early on in the route and lives in their shoulder pads. Instead of being afraid of getting outmuscled, Ponds takes the fight to them. While it's the same reason he was flagged seven times last season, it's a play style we've seen work for smaller corners in the league.)
