2023 NFL Draft cornerback rankings: Christian Gonzalez the best of a talented group (10. Cam Smith, South Carolina, 6-1, 180, Junior - Overview: Smith was born and spent much of his childhood just a few miles from the South Carolina campus and while he moved and played in the state of Maryland for three years in high school, generating interest from recruiters, he stuck close to home and signed with the Gamecocks after returning as a senior to play at Westwood High. Even as a four-star recruit heralded for returning home, Smith had to bide his time behind a depth chart that included 2021 NFL draft picks Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu. Smith tied them with two interceptions while starting just three of eight games in 2020 and emerged as one of the SEC’s most feared pass defenders a year later, ranking ninth in the FBS with 14 passes defensed overall in 2021, despite missing two games. He missed two more in 2022 (including opting out of the bowl) but leaves South Carolina with an impressive three-year run of 84 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 24 passes defensed and six interceptions. Area of Strength: Quick of foot and mind, winning with light feet, loose hips and excellent diagnosis skills. He sneaks peeks back at the quarterback and shows impressive recognition of receiver tells, trusting his eyes and attacking. Closes downhill like he’s shot out of a cannon, projecting nicely to a zone-heavy scheme despite playing much of his time at South Carolina in man coverage. Smith has good awareness of routes developing around him and shows both the burst to close, and excellent hand-eye coordination to slap the ball away. Doesn’t own the most imposing frame but shows plenty of grit in run defense and is a clean wrap-up tackler. Area of Concern: More physical than fundamentally sound as a tackler, resorting to wrestling opponents to the turf. Possesses a lean, lanky frame with just average muscular development. He missed two games due to injury (and opt-out in 2022) each of the past three seasons, with at least one documented concussion. Smith got pretty grabby in 2022, getting called for 10 penalties this past season after only four in 2021. He opted not to participate in the bench press at the Combine or his Pro Day. Bottom Line: Smith paired with Darius Rush to give South Carolina the best cornerback tandem in the country a season ago. Cam Smith, South Carolina (Height: 6′ 0¾” (70th percentile), Weight: 180 (8th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.43 (72nd), 10-Yard Split: 1.49 (89th), Vertical Jump: 38″ (75th), Broad Jump: 134″ (96th), Wingspan: 76⅛” (58th), Arm Length: 31⅝” (59th), Hand Size: 9⅛” (47th)) - Bio: A noted star prospect at both Meade High School in Maryland and Westwood High School in South Carolina, Smith redshirted his first year with the Gamecocks (appearing for just 40 snaps) before breaking onto the scene in 2020 with a two-interception season.  Over four years with South Carolina, Smith had no sacks, four pressures, 71 tackles, 20 stops, and he allowed 48 catches on 94 targets for 701 yards, 184 yards after the catch, seven touchdowns, six interceptions, six pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 73.9. Smith had 1,009 snaps at outside cornerback, 235 in the slot, 74 in the box, 22 at free safety, and 14 along the defensive line. Stat to Know: In man coverage last season, Smith allowed just seven catches on 23 targets for 53 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, four pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 21.8.  Strengths: Smith is also excellent in off coverage because he anticipates routes so well, and he closes to the receiver quickly. Once he’s on your track, you’ll have a tough time shaking him. In fact, you can play Smith at safety depth and get away with it because he closes to the ball so well.  Weaknesses: As a force defender against the run, or when asked to blow through screens to the ball, Smith might not be your first choice, because he’s more of a technician than an aggressor.  Conclusion: Smith isn’t the most obviously gifted cornerback on this list’ his tape doesn’t blow you away as much as it lulls you into a safe, happy place because he’s just so consistently good in coverage. But most teams would rather have the cornerback who just keeps things under control than amazes and frustrates with boom/bust drama, and Smith fits that role well.  NFL Comparison: Derek Cox. Who is Derek Cox, you may ask? He was selected by the Jaguars in the third round of the 2009 draft out of William and Mary, and he had three different four-interception seasons in four years for Jacksonville, and he had his hands all over the ball, with 11 pass deflections in both 2009 and 2012. Cox stood 6-foot-1 and weighed 180 pounds, and he’s probably the best recent example of how a player with similar build and ball skills to Cam Smith can succeed in the NFL. Most cornerbacks who played at a high level at around 180 pounds did so well before our time, but Cox proved that it’s still possible in the modern era.) Cam Smith, South Carolina:  There’s some stiffness in the lower half and he got a little grabby at times at South Carolina, but I want alphas on the outside and I expect Smith’s game to translate extremely well to the next level. You can’t teach instincts in coverage. His ability to mirror and match at the top of routes showcases an uncanny ability to keep his eyes both on the wideout and QB. 2023 NFL Draft rankings: The top-15 CBs in this year’s class (Tier 3 — Could sneak into the first round.  Cam Smith (South Carolina), 6-foot-1, 180 pounds.  Speaking of risers, Cam Smith also had a great day in Indianapolis during the combine and could have done enough to see his name called near the end of the first round. He tested better than expected and looked extremely smooth during on-field drills.  Smith’s 2021 tape will have you scratching your head as to why he isn’t in the same tier as guys like Witherspoon and Gonzalez, but his 2022 tape shows a much more reserved player with a tendency to get a little too grabby.  Smith stands out as one of the more confident personalities on and off the field in this draft class and I have a feeling he would fit right in with Detroit’s coaching staff.  How he fits: Yet another physical corner in a loaded draft class. Pro Day News and Rumors: Adetomiwa Adebawore, Cam Smith, and Bryan Bresee Impress Teams (Cam Smith Impresses at South Carolina - A bevy of teams were on hand for the South Carolina Pro Day on Monday, including defensive back coaches from the New York Giants, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cincinnati Bengals, and New York Jets. The school’s top two prospects did not disappoint.  Cornerbacks Cam Smith and Darius Rush stood on their Combine marks but participated in position drills and looked terrific. They were smooth, fluid, and looked natural. The DB drills were run by coaches from the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos.  Smith, projected to be a first-round pick next month, is drawing interest from the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, and Jaguars. If Smith does make it out of the first frame, I highly doubt he gets past the Panthers’ pick in Round 2, 40th overall.  The Giants are a team that may have an interest in Rush, who was described as a hard-working, humble player. South Carolina Gamecocks pro day: Cam Smith, Zacch Pickens bulk up (Smith weighed in three pounds heavier on Monday than he did at the NFL Scouting Combine. The jump from 180 pounds to 183 might not seem like much, but NFL teams wanted Smith to get bigger to become more comfortable with his outlook. Smith didn’t do any of the athletic metric testing but did work with the other DBs in position drills on the field.  Getting bigger is important for Smith, who mostly played the slot CB role at South Carolina.  “A lot of people value that inside position, but I need to get bigger because most of the time you’re more of a linebacker, not really a nickel,” Smith said via Emily Adams of the Greenville News. “I’m eating healthy options, but really a load of it. 2023 NFL Scouting Combine: What We Learned during Thursday's activities in Indianapolis (4. Confident cover man Smith taken aback by Pats interview. South Carolina cornerback Cam Smith stepped to the podium and immediately exuded confidence with his first couple of responses Thursday, telling reporters he aims to be the best among a strong group of defensive backs at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. "I just consider myself a competitor in all aspects," the Gamecocks product said. "There's a lot of dogs in this group. I'm just trying to make sure I come out on top." Smith has reason to be confident: He's answered the bell in the past, blanketing standout Tennessee receiver Jalin Hyatt and helping South Carolina upset the Volunteers in 2022. As he explained it Thursday, Smith wanted all the smoke. "We came in on Sunday, we already knew what it was," Smith said of the week of prep ahead of the Gamecocks' meeting with the Vols. "I said, 'Put me on him.' I want that. That's what I love to do." Hyatt arrived in Columbia, South Carolina, having eclipsed 130 receiving yards in four of his previous five games, including a 207-yard, five-touchdown highlight reel vs. Alabama. But against Smith and the Vols, Hyatt finished with six catches for 65 yards and no scores. Despite giving up a touchdown to Cedric Tillman -- another talented wide receiver in this prospect pool -- Smith walked away with a prominent feather in his cap. 2023 NFL combine: Cornerback soars to top of Lions’ wish list heading into draft (CB Cam Smith, South Carolina: Sort of the anti-Ringo as a prospect. He doesn’t have elite physical traits, and won’t be taken at the top of his draft class because of it. But he’s still a Round 1-2 prospect because he was such a damn good player in the SEC. 2023 NFL Draft: Prospects who underperformed in 2022 (CB CAM SMITH, SOUTH CAROLINA (69) (2022 PFF Grade: 65.1 (591 snaps)):  Smith is in a similar boat as Ricks in that his draft stock has not only fluctuated mightily during this draft process, but he also has just one season of high-level production that didn’t come during his final collegiate season. Also like Ricks, Smith only had one game all season with 70.0-plus PFF and coverage grades, which came in Week 4 against Charlotte. However, Smith’s 2021 season was about as dominant as you’re going to find for a corner. He was not only good against the pass with an 89.7 coverage grade, but he also held up very well against the run with an 82.4 grade (88.4 overall grade). That season, 80 of the 184 yards he gave up in coverage came against the eventual champion Georgia Bulldogs. Nevertheless, Smith still proved that offenses still needed to respect him, as Levis didn’t target him a single time on 21 coverage snaps when the two squared off in Week 6.) 2023 NFL Draft Prospect Battles To Watch Week 12: Will Levis Faces Georgia Defense (Tennessee WRs Jalin Hyatt, Bru McCoy vs. South Carolina CB Cam Smith:  As of this writing, it’s unclear if Cedric Tillman will be available for Tennessee on Saturday. Regardless of whether he is or isn’t active, however, there will be a matchup to watch between the Volunteers’ receivers and South Carolina CB Cam Smith.  Smith is a tier below CB1 candidates like Ringo, Christian Gonzalez, and Joey Porter Jr. But he’s still a very solid 2023 NFL Draft prospect with early-round potential. Smith has good length and athleticism, but also expands past the eye test with gritty run-support skills and high-level instincts at the catch point.  Should Tillman be unavailable, 6’3″ talent Bru McCoy will take the brunt of his reps for Tennessee. McCoy will test Smith’s physicality and play strength at the point, while Jalin Hyatt — Tennessee’s resident speed demon — will test his top gear.  That said, physicality will be just as important for Smith against Hyatt. College Football Week 10 Live Reactions, Results, and Takeaways (Ringo Makes Clutch Interception:  5:10 p.m. — Tillman wrote Ringo off after a few early wins — but Ringo didn’t write back yet. He just now got his chance to, ending a Tennessee drive that was aimed at getting the Volunteers back in the game. Driving past midfield, Hendon Hooker dialed up a shot to the end zone to cut the lead to one possession. He targeted Tillman on a go-route, but Ringo had other plans.  Ringo matched Tillman well off the line and throttled up quickly to carry him upfield. With his length, he was able to get a lever on Tillman, and as Tillman looked back, Ringo got his head around, tracked the ball, and effectively became the wide receiver — corralling an over-thrown pass in the end zone for an interception, while Tillman contested.  After an up-and-down stretch early in the second quarter, it was great to see Ringo bounce back and make a momentum-draining play against Tennessee. He’s needed to prove he can make plays consistently at the catch point, and he did so there. IC.  Despite Score, Cedric Tillman Giving Kelee Ringo Trouble:  4:55 p.m. — Tennessee may be down 21-6, but one prospect matchup has been won by the Volunteers’ competitor thus far. For the most part, Kelee Ringo has lined up against Cedric Tillman, and Tillman is making life tough for Ringo. On this past drive, Tillman first drew a holding penalty from Ringo, who tugged at Tillman to keep his frame in check.  Then, just a couple plays later, with Ringo playing in off-man, Tillman off-set Ringo with a quick release, pressed upfield, and snapped back on a crisp comeback with tremendous foot speed and hip sink. He got enough space on the break to catch an uncontested pass, as well as turn back upfield for extra yards.  Ringo is having trouble with his discipline against Tillman. After playing too physical, he gave Tillman too much space, and he paid both times. Ringo’s talent is evident, but he’s still seeking a better balance at this point. 2023 NFL Draft Stock - Week 7 (Up - Cam Smith, CB, South Carolina:  Smith (6-0, 188) will keep South Carolina's stream of cornerbacks for the next level alive in the 2023 NFL Draft after emerging as a potential No. 1 cover corner. Team sources say Smith is fast and moves well to run the route and prevent separation. While Smith's size is adequate, scouts say he has very long arms for a corner who is around 6-foot. 2023 NFL Draft Stock - Week 5 (Up - Cam Smith, CB, South Carolina:  Smith broke out for the Gamecocks in 2021, recording 41 tackles, three interceptions and 11 passes defended. Thus far in 2022, he has played well, notching 10 tackles, one interception and a pass broken up. Smith can play outside corner or move inside to cover the slot. He has quality size with height, length, athleticism and speed. Smith shows the agility and quickness to run the route to prevent separation and has good ball skills. The big question about Smith is his strength because he 6-foot, 188 pounds. With his cover skills, team sources think Smith could be a first- or second-round pick next April in the 2023 NFL Draft.) 2023 NFL Draft: Alabama's Bryce Young, Kentucky's Will Levis headline top-10 SEC prospects (10. Horn was more of an athletic specimen. Smith is physical at the catch point and does a good job tracking the ball in the air. Cornerbacks to watch for the 2023 NFL draft (Cam Smith, South Carolina:  Cam Smith returns to South Carolina a year removed from earning Second-Team All-SEC honors from both the media and the coaches. He began his college career in 2019, seeing action in three games for the Gamecocks, preserving a redshirt year. During the 2020 campaign, he played in eight games and made three starts, leading the team with a pair of interceptions. Smith notched his first interception against Vanderbilt, and snared his second against Missouri, in his first collegiate start.  Last season, Smith played in 11 games and started seven, leading the team with 14 passes defended. He grabbed three interceptions on the year.  His awareness in coverage is a big reason that he produced at a high level last season. 2023 NFL Draft sleepers at DB highlighted by South Carolina’s Cam Smith (Cam Smith, CB, South Carolina:  Cam Smith isn’t always one of the first cornerbacks mentioned in the 2023 NFL Draft discussion. But he should be. Smith is quietly one of the best returning cornerbacks on the college football stage. And if you ask me, he has legitimate early-round upside. Somewhere within the first 32 picks isn’t out of the question.  It won’t be surprising if Smith models his game after former teammate Jaycee Horn because he plays with the same biting physical edge. Smith sets the tone with his voracious physicality both in press coverage and in run support, but he also has the athleticism to hold up downfield.
