2023 NFL Draft Week Rumors Wednesday (For a lot of the draft process, the consensus top-three cornerback prospects were Illinois' Devon Witherspoon, Oregon's Christian Gonzalez and Penn State's Joey Porter Jr. However, there are teams that differ from that after finishing off their organizational draft meetings. Some franchises have Mississippi State cornerback Emmanuel Forbes as the third corner behind Witherspoon and Gonzalez. Witherspoon is cemented as the top corner with Gonzalez a lock behind him, but some teams feel Forbes is a better player than Porter. While Forbes is skinny, he is extremely fast and possesses phenomenal ball skills and excellent instincts. Some teams that need corner help will pass on Porter because he is viewed as a press-man only corner and not a good fit for teams that like to play zone or off-man coverage. Hence, don't be shocked if Forbes goes ahead of Porter tomorrow night. The consensus has been to project the Washington Commanders to take a cornerback in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, which is definitely a strong possibility. Washington loves Illinois' Devon Witherspoon, but knows he will be long gone. Oregon's Christian Gonzalez could also be gone by pick No. 16, but if he makes it there, the Commanders could easily end the fall. Anthony Richardson, Jalen Carter, Hendon Hooker among the riskiest picks in the 2023 NFL Draft (Emmanuel Forbes, CB, Mississippi State: Forbes' skill set and stats are intriguing enough that he has gotten some first-round buzz late in the 2023 NFL Draft process. He recorded a whopping 14 interceptions in three seasons at Mississippi State and showed off great movement skills and athleticism at the NFL Combine to boost his draft stock. The drawback with Forbes is similar to the main detractor with DeVonta Smith. He is an outlier and may not have the requisite size needed to thrive in the NFL. Forbes measured at 6-1 during the 2023 NFL Combine but weighed a paltry 166 pounds. That is light for the NFL level — the average NFL defensive back weighs 200 pounds, per a University of Idaho study — and it will cause teams to question whether Forbes will be durable enough to guard bigger and more physical NFL players. That said, Smith will be pointed to as a reason not to worry about Forbes' slighter frame. And many will point out that Forbes played 35 games in three seasons with the Bulldogs, so it's not like he had a bad track record with durability in college. 2023 NFL Draft: Pro comparisons and analytical team fits for top cornerback prospects (Emmanuel Forbes (PRO COMPARISON: Trevon Diggs): OK, OK -- before you say I'm insane, let's address the elephant in the room. I am fully aware that Diggs weighed 205 pounds at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine, while Forbes checked in at just 166 pounds during this year's event. Both corners stand 6-1, but that's a massive difference in density. Still, the players have one game-changing thing in common: elite ballhawking ability. In his first three NFL seasons, Diggs has intercepted 17 passes. In 2021, he led the NFL with 11 INTs and two pick-sixes. Over three seasons at Mississippi State, Forbes had 14 interceptions, including an NCAA-record six(!) pick-sixes. In man coverage last year, Forbes allowed a 20 percent completion rate (per PFF), the lowest figure among FBS corners. I asked a lot of front office execs about this slender defender, and they all agreed that Diggs -- or at least a skinner Diggs -- is a fair comp. One exec also mentioned Asante Samuel Sr., who racked up 51 interceptions and six pick-sixes during his fine NFL career. TEAM FIT: Buffalo Bills. I need to say somewhere that Jacksonville pops up as a potential fit for nearly corner on this list, but Buffalo is the match here for a few reasons. First of all, Forbes projects as a nice fit in Buffalo's nickel-heavy scheme. The system allows for more 1-on-1 coverage outside, which would give Forbes an opportunity to do what he does best -- quickly identifying and jumping routes -- while he assimilates to the NFL game. Furthermore, with Buffalo's strong front, a back-end ballhawk could really do some damage. And with the Bills' experienced secondary -- headlined by cornerback Tre'Davious White and safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer -- Forbes would be properly supported by savvy vets. He grew up about 70 miles west of the Starkville campus, generating four-stars as a football recruit, as well as offers to play baseball. Forbes signed with the Bulldogs while they were being coached by Joe Moorhead but he stuck to his commitment after the team made the switch to Mike Leach. He has a frame that suggests durability would be an issue but played in 36 of 37 possible games over his college career, starting 34 of them. Concerns: Forbes is rail-thin and his lack of functional strength shows up with ballcarriers carrying him for additional yardage after contact. He plays with a gambler’s mentality and is willing to lose some to win some. Attacks downhill, including in run support, leaving him vulnerable to play-action and double-moves. He has a gangly frame with long, loopy arms that are often in the breadbasket of receivers as the ball arrives, too often drawing flags (including a career-high six in 2022, according to PFF). Bottom Line: Forbes is a dynamic player, but his slim frame will give teams pause. Though he weighed in four pounds heavier at his Pro Day, Forbes’ 166 pounds at the Combine is the same size Eagles’ wideout DeVonta Smith was measured prior to him being selected in the first round two years ago. Emmanuel Forbes, Mississippi State (Height: 6′ 0¾” (70th percentile), Weight: 166 (0), 40-Yard Dash: 4.35 (92nd), 10-Yard Split: 1.48 (92nd), Vertical Jump: 37½” (69th), Broad Jump: 124″ (64th), Wingspan: 79″ (92nd), Arm Length: 32¼” (78th), Hand Size: 8½” (7th)) - Bio: Forbes was a four-star recruit and the No. 1 cornerback in the state out of Grenada High School in Grenada, Mississippi, and his decision to commit to his home state was certainly good news for the Bulldogs. His impact was immediate, as he started nine games and had five interceptions in his true freshman season of 2020. In that season, he became the first MSU defender with two interceptions in a game since Mark McLaurin in 2017, and the first MSU defender with multiple interception returns for a touchdown since Corey Broomfield in 2009. Over thee seasons with the Bulldogs, Forbes had one sack, four pressures, 130 tackles, 63 stops, and he allowed 110 catches on 191 targets for 1,404 yards, 657 yards after the catch, 14 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, an astonishing six interceptions returned for touchdowns, 17 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 74.6. Forbes played 1,962 snaps at outside cornerback, 192 in the box, 22 in the slot, six along the defensive line, and three at free safety. Stat to Know: Teams that prefer man coverage might also prefer Forbes — last season, he led the nation with five interceptions in man coverage, and allowed just six catches on 18 targets for 120 yards and a touchdown. Strengths: With his interception numbers, you assume that Forbes has excellent ball skills, and that checks out. He’s got a great sense for slow-playing quarterbacks, as he did to Will Levis on this pick-six, and shooting in for the ball before anybody knows what happened. Forbes will also use his height and crazy wingspan to replace a receiver’s catch radius with his own. Weaknesses: As is the case for most taller cornerbacks with longer limbs, Forbes tends to struggle with receivers who can keep him off balance with quick route adjustments. When he stays low and works to transition through the route, he can mitigate that to a degree, but it does show up as an issue. Conclusion: Teams who prefer aggressive defenses in which cornerbacks can just line up right on the receiver and clamp down from there should love Forbes’ tape. And nobody’s going to mind adding a player with his ball skills and production. Forbes could stand to add a few pounds in the interest of play strength, and there are a few holes in his coverage, but in the right system, he’s going to be a very tough defender to deal with. NFL Comparison: Samari Rolle. Like Forbes, Rolle was a rail-thin (6-foot-0, 175-pound) cornerback who came into the NFL with all the tools for success except for that whole weight thing. It will only take one team to accept Forbes’ outlier status from that perspective and hope he doesn’t lose a tick of quickness if he beefs up a bit. At his peak with the Titans and Ravens, Rolle was a suffocating cornerback who you tested at your peril, and Forbes has put enough on tape to make me think he has the same potential palette.) Lions could find playmaking cornerbacks, depth outside NFL draft's first round (At the NFL Scouting Combine this week, two of the best playmakers from this draft class, Mississippi State's Emmanuel Forbes and Utah's Clark Phillips III fielded media questions from side-by-side podiums. Between them, they intercepted a dozen passes last season, both crediting their film-study habits as a key component to their success. Neither is being mentioned among the top three or four at the position, but each could sneak into the back end of the first round come April, particularly if they test well at the Combine and/or their pro day. But realistically, largely due to concerns with their size, both are likely Day-2 prospects. In a deep cornerback class offering prospects of all different shapes and sizes, Emmanuel Forbes' frame has become a topic of pre-draft discussion. A long, lean cover man who was listed by Mississippi State at 6 feet tall, Forbes revealed Thursday in Indianapolis that he played last season at around 170 to 173 pounds. While he says he's looking to tip the scales at about 180 or 185 pounds during Friday's combine weigh-in, Forbes unsurprisingly faced a number of questions about his slight weight, pointing out that it didn't stop him from excelling in the conference that annually produces the most NFL draft picks. "I played in the SEC for three years and missed one game -- and it wasn't due to a football injury," Forbes said at his combine podium session. "I just feel like I'm durable. "A lot of people like to go at me for my size, and I've showed that my size doesn't matter and I go out there with an edge and a chip on my shoulder."
