2023 NFL Draft Prospect LB DeMarvion Overshown

LB DeMarvion Overshown:

Scouting Reports:

Articles:

11 potential steals in 2023 NFL Draft include Stetson Bennett, Zach Charbonnet (Linebacker: DeMarvion Overshown, Texas - Overshown is an athletic linebacker who converted to the position after beginning his Longhorns career as a safety. He became a productive, do-it-all linebacker who racked up 95 tackles, 10 TFL and four sacks during his final season at Texas.  Overshown possesses a long 6-3 frame, but he probably needs to bulk up a bit, as he weighed 229 pounds at the 2023 NFL Combine. That will help him to be more of a physical tackler who can shed blocks and get to ball carrier at the NFL level.  What makes Overshown a potential boom pick is his abilities in coverage, as his safety skill set and athletic ability will allow him to cover tight ends and other players over the middle of the field well. Teams will covet him because of that as the NFL continues to become increasingly pass-heavy.) Top 10 LBs in the 2023 NFL Draft Include Trenton Simpson and Noah Sewell (10. DeMarvion Overshown, Texas:  Don’t let DeMarvion Overshown‘s abundance of white armbands distract you from his dynamic play from the second level. Overshown is fresh off his best season for the Longhorns, which coincided with his increase in snaps along the defensive line and from the slot.  At 6’3″ and 229 pounds, the Texas LB will certainly have his fair share of issues against the run as a stack defender. His length, speed, and agility are valuable, but his lack of mass and tackling inconsistencies are thorns in the side of his profile. The former safety needs time but can be a mainstay on special teams as he hones his versatility and athletic profile as a nickel/dime linebacker.) 2023 NFL Draft linebacker rankings: Who's behind Drew Sanders? (9. DeMarvion Overshown, Texas, 6-3, 229, Redshirt Senior - Overview: Overshown starred as a safety just a few hours east of the Austin campus and accepted a scholarship from the Longhorns as a three-star recruit. He first cracked the starting lineup as a true sophomore in 2019 but didn’t become a full-time member of top unit until 2020, when Overshown began a three-year run of earning post-season acknowledgment from Big 12 coaches, ascending to first-team honors in 2022. He leaves Texas as one of the more experienced off-ball linebackers in the country, having started 33 games with 50 appearances over his college career, generating 165 tackles, including 18 tackles for loss and five sacks with five turnovers caused (three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, one interception) during that time.  Strengths: Lithe, long-armed athlete with very good speed (4.56) for the position. Looks a bit like a praying mantis with his leggy frame but is surprisingly agile and accelerates well to the perimeter, showing enough speed to beat backs to the flanks. Has shown intriguing development in his diagnostic skills, trusting his eyes more and attacking instantly, taking better advantage of his speed. Highly physical player. Doesn’t back down from a physical confrontation even when giving up 100-plus pounds. Attacks contact with aggressive hands, seeking to shed immediately. Aggressive, physical tackler with better knockdown power than his frame suggests based on his explosive closing burst and combative playing style.  Concerns: Most of Overshown’s "biggest" issues are his troublesome frame and lack of functional power. Even with the additional weight added over his career, Overshown has a frame more traditionally seen at safety with broad shoulders and relatively narrow, high hips which leave him little room for additional muscle mass. Long, spindly legs give him just average anchoring power, though, to his credit, he plays with excellent effort. He is determined in his path to the ballcarrier but is too easily knocked off course by blockers at the second level, simply lacking the ballast to hold up. Bottom Line: At a minimum, Overshown should be a special-teams standout, as he’s a virtual heat-seeking missile who seems to crave contact. His ceiling is a lot higher than that. The team that shows a little patience with Overshown could be rewarded with quite the moveable chess piece.  Grade: Third-to-fourth round) (4-11-23):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2023-nfl-draft-off-ball-linebackers-drew-sanders-leads-intriguing-group

2023 NFL draft: Louis Riddick's favorite prospects, sleepers (My Favorite Sleepers - DeMarvion Overshown, ILB, Texas:  If I were an NFL team, I'd do whatever necessary to make sure Overshown ended up on my team by the end of the draft. He fits so well as a 4-3 weakside linebacker and special teams playmaker in today's NFL because of his length, agility, speed and explosive hitting ability.  He entered college as a safety and made the switch to linebacker. And you can see exceptional instincts and physical downhill mentality. Overshown (6-foot-3, 229 pounds) has the speed to close in zone and/or man coverage assignments. I'm as excited to see how he develops in the NFL as I am about any player in this class.) Lions have pre-draft visits scheduled with a pair of Tennessee Volunteers (4th round: DeMarvion Overshown, Texas:  Overshown was projected higher than this entering the season after having a dalliance with the 2022 NFL draft before returning to the Longhorns. He had another solid season, showing real improvement at anticipating plays pre-snap, yet he now projects as a middle-rounder.  Some of that is because of his size, or lack thereof. Overshown is lanky at 6-3 and 225 pounds, and his play strength is much more in line with a safety (which he used to be) than a linebacker. Getting off blockers is a major issue, but Overshown is effective when he’s free to run. His closing burst and body control in getting to the point of attack are very impressive, and Overshown has good spatial awareness and route recognition in coverage situations.) 2023 NFL Draft: The top 8 linebackers (6. DeMarvion Overshown, Texas (Height: 6′ 2¾” (72nd percentile), Weight: 229 (14th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.56 (85th), 10-Yard Split: 1.59 (70th), Bench Press: 15 reps (5th), Broad Jump: 124″ (85th), Arm Length: 32¼” (47th), Hand Size: 9½” (41st)) - Bio: An All-America, all-state and two-time all-district honoree out of Arp High School in Arp, Texas, Overshown committed to Texas in 2018, had 33 starts over his five season, and played in 50 total games. Over those five seasons for the Longhorns, Overshown had nine sacks, 52 total pressures, 187 tackles, 119 stops, and he allowed 92 catches on 118 targets for 817 yards, 629 yards after the catch, two touchdowns, three interceptions, 10 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 90.6. In 2022, he had 469 snaps at linebacker, 123 along the defensive line, 117 in the slot, and two at cornerback.  Stat to Know: Overshown’s pressure rate of 25% in 2022 is the highest for any linebacker on this list.  Strengths: Let’s start with that pressure rate, and how it manifests on the field. Overshown uses his athleticism to work off the edge with excellent ability to sift through blocks…  …and from the second level as a blitzer. In pressure situations, Overshown’s movement skills really shine.  In coverage, Overshown is athletic and agile enough to cover short and intermediate stuff from the middle of the field to the flat.  And he’s also got a nice downhill mentality when it’s time to wreck ballcarriers at or behind the line of scrimmage.  Weaknesses: At his size, Overshown will get washed out in the run game by blockers at the first and second levels. Like a lot of lighter linebackers, he’s better off reading gaps than trying to take people on in a physical sense.  And while he’s athletic enough to cover just about anyone, there are times when Overshown gets out of phase in coverage. Sometimes, he has the recovery speed for it… other times, not so much.  Conclusion: Teams in need of run-pluggers at the position might look another way in Overshown’s case, but his skill set personifies the ways in which the NFL is trending in that he provides range, measurables, athletic aggression, and pure movement in an appealing package. He could be a real factor for a defensive coaching staff that maximizes his abilities on the edge, in the box, and in the slot, without worrying too much about how he deals with power situations.  NFL Comparison: Daryl Washington. Selected by the Cardinals out of TCU in the second round of the 2010 draft out of TCU, and before off-field issues got the better of him (this is not a comparable in Overshown’s case), Washington was for a while one of the prototypical versions of the modern linebacker who could cover in the box and the slot, as well as reading run fits and providing two-level pressure.) Ranking the top off-ball linebackers in the 2023 NFL Draft class (Tier 2 - DeMarvion Overshown (Texas), 6-foot-3, 229 pounds:  Though I believe there is a decent gap between the top two tiers, there is still plenty of talent available in the early Day 3 range. Topping that sub-list is Overshown, who—aside from obviously being one of the top name bracket contenders in this entire draft—is an undersized, but high-upside athlete that tested really well at the combine. He is a former safety turned linebacker that has slowly but surely gotten better each year at his position. Lions linebacker coach Kelvin Sheppard met with Overshown at Texas’ Pro Day.  How he fits: WILL linebacker with some pass rushing opportunities sprinkled in.  Round grade: Third-fourth round) (3-30-23):  https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2023/3/30/23653309/2023-nfl-draft-ranking-the-top-off-ball-linebackers-in-this-years-class

2023 NFL Draft: Every top-10 linebacker's highest-graded season (DEMARVION OVERSHOWN, TEXAS (Big board rank: 99/LB6, Best PFF grade: 71.5 - 2022, 2022 Coverage grade: 66.0, 2022 Run-defense grade: 73.8, 2022 Pass-rush grade: 73.9)) (3-10-23):  https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2023-nfl-draft-every-top-10-linebackers-highest-graded-season

Lions send LB coach Kelvin Sheppard to Texas Longhorns pro day (The Detroit Lions might have tipped their hand on who they were checking out at the Longhorns event by who the team dispatched. Linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard was there, presumably watching LB DeMarvion Overshown go through his workout.  Generally projected as a third or fourth-round prospect, Overshown is a 6-foot-4, 220-pound speed-in-space type of backer. He had previously met with the Lions during Senior Bowl week and informally at last week’s scouting combine.  Overshown did not disappoint in his workout) (3-8-23):  https://lionswire.usatoday.com/2023/03/09/texas-longhorns-pro-day-demarvion-overshown-kelvin-heppard-lions-draft/

News and numbers from the Texas pro day (DeMarvion Overshown (Vertical jump: 36.5 inches, Broad jump: 10 feet 6 inches): Overshown went through defensive back and linebacker drills at 231 pounds after playing around 220 during the 2022 season. He felt some tightness in Indianapolis so he used the opportunity at pro day to show his athleticism and versatility, with one main motivating factor in mind.  “Everything I do, I think about the future of my little man,” Overshown said. “Him growing up being able to say ‘this is my dad, my dad did this,’ that’s the most proud I can be.”  He wants Steve Sarkisian and company to be on the lookout for the next great Texas football player.  “Hopefully he’ll get that D1 offer from Texas here soon and you’ll have another Overshown you can interview here in a couple of years,” he said.  Overshown has heard from the Cowboys, Jets, Lions, 49ers, Dolphins, and others. He believes he offers a level of versatility few prospects can claim with regards to modern defenses.) Texas Pro Day 2023 News, Rumors: Bijan Robinson, Moro Ojomo, and DeMarvion Overshown Bear Watching (DeMarvion Overshown, LB:  Heading into the Texas Pro Day, DeMarvion Overshown is already in a good spot. It doesn’t take much tape-watching to know he’s an athlete, but Overshown’s NFL Combine showing confirmed it.  At 6’3″, 229 pounds, he achieved a 4.56 40-yard dash with a 1.59 10-yard split, and a 10’4″ broad jump. His Relative Athletic Score (RAS) is 9.55 unofficially, and elite vertical and agility numbers could lift it even higher.) (3-9-23):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/texas-longhorns-pro-day-2023/

2023 NFL Combine preview: 10 linebackers the Lions should be watching (DeMarvion Overshown, Hybrid, Texas, 6-foot-2 1/2, 220:  Overshown is a converted safety that maintains his defensive back instincts when in coverage and is at his best when he is in pursuit. Like Simpson, he may not be a traditional stack linebacker fit, but he offers a lot of skills that teams lean on in subpackages. Overshown is likely best suited for the Lions’ Chris Board role, where he can be a core special teamer and a subpackage matchup linebacker on defense.) 5 Linebackers for Lions to Watch at 2023 NFL Scouting Combine (DeMarvion Overshown, Texas:  Overshown is a former safety, so he’s certainly an athlete worth watching. At 6-foot-4, he’s got ideal size to man the middle of the defense.  In addition to his size, he has the anticipation and speed of a former safety. Like others, he needs to demonstrate sharper technique. Yet, he’ll be among the combine’s best athletes, which could raise his stock.) 2023 NFL Draft Position Rankings: Linebacker (4. DEMARVION OVERSHOWN, TEXAS (BIG BOARD RANK: 82):  Overshown's draft stock was on life support after a dreadful 2021 campaign, but his massive improvement in 2022 should encourage evaluators.) 2023 Senior Bowl: Wednesday's National Team Practice Report (Texas linebacker Demarvion Overshown put together an impressive practice on Wednesday. He dominated in the pass-rushing one-on-ones, showing speed-to-power to plow through running backs and close on the quarterback marker in a hurry. Overshown achieved good wins over Appalachian State's Camerun Peoples, Illinois' Chase Brown and Northwestern's Evan Hull. Overshown had some good tape from his senior year and is a sleeper prospect who could be a nice value on the second day of the 2023 NFL Draft.) Senior Bowl 2023 LB Primer: What You Need To Know (DeMarvion Overshown:  When there’s a gap to fill in the run, expect Overshown to be in it. His ability to read, dissect, and explode through holes is one of the best in the country. He’ll shine in team drills and could become one of the first LBs off the board come April.) 2023 NFL Draft: Ranking the top 10 linebacker prospects (5. DEMARVION OVERSHOWN, TEXAS (RS SENIOR | 6-4, 220) (2022 PFF Grade: 71.5, Play Style: Pterodactyl, Initial Round Projection: Day 2):  Overshown has the length profile every team is looking for, as he’s a super high-cut 6-foot-4 linebacker who has the wingspan to shut down throwing lanes over the middle of the field. And as a former safety who has smooth hips and range, Overshown has allowed just 214 yards on 332 coverage snaps last season.  Even after three years of starting at linebacker, though, Overshown still looks too often like that former safety. He has a tendency to get out of control, causing his balance to suffer — although that improved considerably this past fall. That’s borne out as a tackler over the course of his career with a 19.2% missed tackle rate. If a team is looking for a moldable ball of clay with all the tools to succeed in the class, Overshown is a great option.) Top 10 LBs in the 2023 NFL Draft Include Trenton Simpson and Noah Sewell (10. DeMarvion Overshown, Texas:  Don’t let DeMarvion Overshown’s abundance of white armbands distract you from his dynamic play from the second level. Overshown is fresh off his best season for the Longhorns, which coincided with his increase in snaps along the defensive line and from the slot.  At 6’4″ and 224 pounds, the Texas LB will certainly have his fair share of issues against the run as a stack defender. His length, speed, and agility are valuable, but his lack of mass and tackling inconsistencies are thorns in the side of his profile.  Nevertheless, as fellow PFN Draft Analyst Ian Cummings said last season, “[Overshown] isn’t quite there yet, and it’s not guaranteed that he ever will. But the potential is impossible to ignore.”) (1-4-23):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2023-nfl-draft-top-10-linebackers/

Trey Palmer, Devon Achane Include Week 13 2023 NFL Draft Risers (Risers - DeMarvion Overshown, LB, Texas:  DeMarvion Overshown has been a favorite of mine over the past three seasons, and his performance against Baylor enhanced my affection for the linebacker. He finished with a game-high 14 tackles, as well as two TFLs, two pass breakups, and a sack.  For the season, Overshown posted a career-best 95 tackles. He’s a fierce linebacker who makes plays all over the field, stuffing running backs at the line and chasing them down in pursuit. He shows ability playing in space and has enough upside to develop into a three-down defender. Overshown has a third-round grade on my board.) (11-29-22):  https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2023-nfl-draft-risers-sliders-cfb-week-13-2022/

Draft watch: 7 prospects, including Arkansas LB Drew Sanders (DeMarvion Overshown, LB, Texas (senior)
6-foot-3 1/2, 224 pounds:  I previewed Overshown last season, and then briefly mentioned him again earlier this season, but he remains one of my favorite players and deserves some more love. Long, fluid, fast, and aggressive, Overshown brings the wood with authority. As a former safety, he has natural instincts in coverage and explodes to the ball.  Lions fit: The Lions need linebackers who can cover and Overshown can do that and so much more. Additionally, his ability to contribute on special teams is a massive plus.  An excerpt from The Athletic’s Dane Brugler’s mailbag:  “For Texas to slow down the Horned Frogs, Overshown will need to play a complete game. Though he can be inconsistent with his take-on and finishing, the Longhorns’ linebacker flies around the field like he was shot out of a cannon. Some scouts believe Overshown will be a Day 2 draft pick.”) (11-12-22):  https://www.prideofdetroit.com/2022/11/12/23448552/detroit-lions-2023-nfl-draft-watch-7-prospects-drew-sanders

NFL Draft News and Rumors Mailbag: Talking Quentin Johnston, Bo Nix, and More (Q: Texas gets TCU and GameDay this weekend – which Texas players should we be watching?  Obviously, both of the running backs. College Football Week 8 Live Reactions, Results, and Takeaways (Texas defender DeMarvion Overshown has looked good with seven tackles, two TFLs, one sack, and one PBU. Overshown is a terrific linebacker and a nice combination of instincts and intensity. Tipping the scales at 225 pounds and timing in the 4.7s will likely keep Overshown out of the initial 60 selections. Lions 2023 NFL draft prospect watch for CFB Week 2 (DeMarvion Overshown, LB, Texas – He was a player the Lions spent some time scouting in 2021 before option to return to the Longhorns for another season. Overshown does a little bit of everything at LB but his best attribute is his closing speed. He uses his 6-foot-4 length in coverage smartly, a la Bobby Okereke of the Colts.) (9-10-22):  https://lionswire.usatoday.com/lists/2023-nfl-draft-prospect-watch-for-cfb-week-2-detroit-lions/

Draft watch: Will Levis vs. Anthony Richardson featured in primetime (Bonus: DeMarvion Overshown, LB, Texas (Senior):  In that same piece where I profiled To’o To’o, I also profiled Overshown, one of my favorites from last year.  Overshown is a long, fluid, speedy athlete with a tremendous burst that is evident when Texas sends him on blitzes. Like (Brian) Asamoah (Vikings third round pick in 2022), Overshown likes to bring the woodshed with him on tackles, and he relies on his natural instincts to put him in the right spots. He is still adding weight, but at his size, he often struggles to get off blocks, though that should improve with experience and muscle (he has the frame to add good weight).) Big 12 2023 NFL Draft prospects and scouting reports (DeMarvion Overshown, LB | Grade: 3.73 | Projected Round: 3.  Talking to scouts, I find there are a variety of opinions on linebacker DeMarvion Overshown. My opinion is that he’s a terrific Day 2 prospect who can line up at inside linebacker, play three downs, and force the action on the blitz. Overshown is a tough, nasty, and explosive defender who makes plays all over the field. He’s a little light at 225 pounds, though I’d expect his 6’1 1/2″ frame to be closer to 235 by Combine time.) Top 25 Big 12 2023 NFL Draft prospects: Kansas State's Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Baylor's Siaki Ika headline the group (11. LB DEMARVION OVERSHOWN, TEXAS (RS SENIOR):  Overshown is a former safety with that kind of athleticism. At 6-foot-4 and 223 pounds, he’s a unique body type for the linebacker position. He’ll be drafted on that alone, but if he wants to be taken with an early pick, he has to improve as a tackler. He’s missed 22.5% of his career tackle attempts and been over 20% for all three seasons he’s played.) Texas’ 2023 NFL Draft prospects led by Bijan Robinson, Jordan Whittington (DeMarvion Overshown, LB:  The upside is still incredibly exciting with linebacker DeMarvion Overshown. Overshown is a former safety with eye-popping length and explosiveness, who first made his way onto the draft radar with a breakout 2020 season. 2021 wasn’t quite as fruitful for Overshown, but the potential remains apparent. He needs to keep honing his ability in the box and improve in run defense, but Overshown has the tools to thrive in the modern NFL.) Linebackers to watch for the 2023 NFL draft (DeMarvion Overshown, Texas:  247Sports graded DeMarvion Overshown as a four-star recruit during the 2018 recruiting cycle, and ranked him as the fifth-best player in the state of Texas, and the sixth-best safety in the country. He began his career with the Longhorns at safety, playing there his first two season.  Overshown played in nine games as a true freshman in 2018, and played in eight more the following season, registering his first career start. But he switched positions prior to his junior season, and started all ten games for the Longhorns at linebacker in 2020. He recorded 60 total tackles, eight tackles for a loss, and a team-high seven pass breakups. He was named an Honorable Mention All-Big 12 selection, and was the Defensive MVP of the Alamo Bowl.  This past season saw Overshown lead the Longhorns with 74 total tackles. He was again an Honorable Mention All-Big 12 selection, and was also named a Butkus Award semifinalist. He has sideline-to-sideline ability, as he showed on this play against Oklahoma.)
