Five top NFL draft prospects who could be facing a slide (Brian Branch, S, Alabama:  A slot defender with modest measurables typically would be a long shot for the first round. That characterization, of course, is a drastic oversimplification of Branch, a heady and multitalented coverage asset who routinely finds the ball and erases big plays. How teams evaluate him, then, might depend on how they balance his suboptimal traits with his sterling tape.  At Alabama, the 6-0, 190-pounder played the "star" position once manned by Minkah Fitzpatrick, whom Branch says he models his game after. Additionally, he is as sure a tackler as there is in this draft with only four misses in his career and was asked to do a lot in Alabama's defense. Is he actually a safety?  By the numbers, Branch is not a safety, as he only played 7.3% of his snaps at safety during his three years at Alabama. Over the last two years, he has posted a 75.4 overall grade when lined up as a safety, a good yet unspectacular mark. By contrast, He’s played around 70% of his career snaps as a slot corner. Brian Branch, Alabama, 6-0, 190, Junior - Overview: Excelling in the same "Star" role as former Alabama and current Pittsburgh Steelers standout Minkah Fitzpatrick, Branch developed into arguably the most versatile and dependable defensive back in the country over the past three years, topping out this past season with 90 tackles, including 14 for loss, while tying a career high with nine pass breakups and delivering big plays as both an interceptor and punt returner, earning All-American honors.   Even amidst all of the talent in Tuscaloosa, Branch stood out immediately, logging action in 12 games as a true freshman and starting three, collecting 27 tackles, breaking up nine passes and picking off two passes.  Strengths: Branch is a no-nonsense, do-it-all safety who processes and plays faster than his relatively pedestrian workout numbers might suggest. Tracks the ball like it's on radar, taking sharp angles in pursuit and delivering forceful, immediate stops as a tackler. This awareness also shows up in coverage with Branch typically asked to drop down and cover slot receivers, forcing opponents to throw elsewhere because of his tracking skills. Impressive timing, hand-eye coordination and body control to slip his arm through those of receivers' to rake at the ball as it arrives, breaking up 27 passes in just three years at Alabama. Impressive vision and natural elusiveness with the ball in his hands, returning the first of two punts he received in 2022 back for a 68-yard touchdown (Louisiana-Monroe). He was revered at Alabama for his leadership and grit. Concerns: Branch lacks an ideal frame for the rigors of the safety position, prompting a possible switch to cornerback in the NFL, where he would rank among the position's lesser athletes. He has merely average straight-line speed for an NFL defensive back, clocking in at 4.58 seconds. His agility numbers (4.56 second short shuttle at his Pro Day were among the slowest of this year's class of DBs, proving that he's stickier changing directions than most want at cornerback. 2023 NFL Draft: 'Trust The Tape' prospects who shouldn't be overlooked despite lacking elite athletic traits (Brian Branch, S/CB, Alabama - Branch ran 4.58 and had a vertical in the 34th percentile at the safety position. Neither are amazing. Branch isn't your classic, deep-middle free safety nor is he a safety who everyone realizes should probably just play linebacker. He's a do-everything "slot defender." Call him a nickel corner if you want, really. He was a routine big-play creator in the intermediate level of the field playing the famous "Star" position in Nick Saban's defense, the spot in which Saban at least attempts to place his best defensive back. At just under 6-foot and 190 pounds, Branch doesn't have intimidating size either. I do not care. He is, legitimately, the best tackling defensive back I've ever scouted. I won't go as far to say that he never misses a tackle. But it is exceptionally rare. He has such a tremendous feel for route combinations in man or zone and finds the football frequently when it's arriving. Because the first round is actually more about traits than tape, Branch may not hear his name called until the second half of the first round. Over three collegiate seasons, he amassed five sacks, 20 quarterback pressures, 140 tackles, 74 stops, and 96 catches allowed on 148 targets for 861 yards, 379 yards after the catch, eight touchdowns, four interceptions, 15 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 87.1. Branch played 1,182 snaps in the slot, 300 in the box, 101 at free safety, 59 along the defensive line, and 42 at cornerback.  Stat to Know: As a pure single-high or split-field safety in 2022, Branch allowed five catches on eight targets for 46 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception.  Strengths: Branch just sees the game very well; even if he’s beaten on the play, he has a tendency to limit the damage after the catch as a deeper defender. because he’ll close with confidence and intelligence.  As a slot defender, which comprises a lot of the safety position for most of the players on this list, Branch is a real pain in the butt for opposing quarterbacks and receivers. In the slot last season, he allowed no catches on three targets… and he had four pass breakups. When you have more deflections than targets, that says a lot about your range.  Branch’s intelligence and feel for the game extend to his abilities as a blitzer, where he’ll use a linebacker’s sense of how to explode through gaps to get to the quarterback.  Weaknesses: Branch is a feisty player, and stronger than you would expect for his size, but there are times when that third percentile weight does show up in a negative sense. He needs to have that great gap sense, because he’s not going to win a lot of rock fights.  Conclusion: Branch is the very model of the modern versatile safety in that you can play him just about anywhere on the field, but we’re projecting him as a safety and slot defender here because this is where his best NFL value might lie. Most NFL defenses would be able to take him in the first round the find first-round value for him sooner than later, because he does so many things so well from multiple positions. It’ll be fascinating to see where his NFL team has him playing, and whether that changes from game to game and season to season.  NFL Comparison: Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Dolphins took Fitzpatrick out of Alabama with the 11th overall pick in the 2018 draft, and they played him similarly to the ways in which he was deployed at Alabama — all over the defense. When the Steelers traded for Fitzpatrick in 2019, they turned him into more of a pure free safety, and Fitzpatrick was able to make that transition. Branch has all the attributes to make that happen, though you probably don’t want to take too much away from his outstanding slot coverage. Nick Saban and his staff have had a knack for developing these multi-position stars, so it’s no surprise that Branch is the latest guy to shoot out of that pipeline.) Ostensibly a safety, Branch has been deployed covering the slot at Alabama (over 1,100 snaps over his career) and fits the mold of where NFL defenses are looking to move to with that position. Branch is an exceptional tackler and brings elite run defense to the table in addition to his coverage skills. He missed just four tackles in his entire collegiate career despite attempting 174 tackles and making 74 defensive stops. Alabama Pro Day 2023 News, Rumors: Bryce Young Set To Throw for the First Time (Brian Branch, S:  Brian Branch was one of the highly-regarded prospects scrutinized for a non-elite testing performance at the NFL Combine. He logged solid explosiveness numbers, but his 4.58 40-yard dash was a bit underwhelming.  Branch may look to run that again at his pro day, but regardless, his short-area athleticism and fluidity are stronger athletic traits. 2023 NFL Draft rankings: The top-15 CBs in this year’s class (Tier 2 — Likely to go in the first round, but not at 6.  Brian Branch (Alabama), 6-foot-0, 190 pounds:  Branch might be listed on most outlets as a safety, but he has played mostly slot corner and in the box throughout his college career, and that is likely where he’ll play in the NFL, too. He is a versatile defender that has played at every level of the defense and has shown that he can be very effective when rushing the passer, playing the run, and covering in the slot.  What I love about Branch is his football IQ. He is at his best when he’s seeing the play develop in front of him. He is an excellent run defender and is also one of the best tackling defensive backs I’ve ever seen on film. 2023 NFL Draft Stock - Pre-New Year's Day Bowls (Up - Brian Branch, DB, Alabama:  Branch put on a clinic against Kansas State. He was all over the field, making tackles in run defense and in pass coverage. Early in the first quarter, Branch came over from zone coverage to make two good open-field tackles. In run support, he had a good tackle for a loss on Deuce Vaughn after shedding a block from Malik Knowles to track down Vaughn in the backfield. Shorty later, Branch blitzed and flew into the backfield to notch another tackle for a loss on a tackle of Vaughn.  While in zone coverage over the slot receiver in the third quarter, Branch read the eyes of the quarterback to undercut the outside receiver to reel in an interception. On the next play, the Crimson Tide had a 17-yard touchdown to essentially lock up the win over the Wildcats.  On Kansas State's next possession, Branch recorded his third tackle for a loss after running past a block and tracking down Vaughn in the flat. On the next play, Branch laid another big hit on a tackle, and on third down, he made the tackle to get his defense off the field. Early in the fourth quarter, Branch came on a corner blitz and dodged blockers to get a sack of Will Howard.  Branch could be a superb weapon for his NFL defense. He can play nickel corner, safety and outside corner. Branch has good size, speed, athleticism, and instinctiveness.
