Over three seasons with the Tigers, Bresee had eight sacks, 13 quarterback hits, 39 quarterback hurries, 34 tackles, 35 stops, and one forced fumble. He had 583 snaps in the B-gaps, 190 in the A-gaps, 69 over the tackles, and 68 outside the tackles.  Stat to Know: Bresee’s pressure rate of 12% ranked third in this class among interior defensive linemen, behind only Jalen Carter and Calijah Kancey.  Strengths: Bresee’s ability to create quick pressure on the quarterback is something that NFL teams value. It speaks to his explosiveness off the snap, and how he can just wreck a backfield by knifing through blocks.  These traits also apply to his potential as a run defender — when Bresee has it on lock right from the snap, there are times when blockers can’t even get their hands up before he’s zoomed by them.  Weaknesses: This is true of a lot of collegiate defensive linemen and edge defenders who haven’t yet learned to integrate advanced techniques with their athletic potential, but Bresee doesn’t always have a plan if you stone him at the line of scrimmage. Too often, he’ll wrestle instead of disengaging. Tennessee right tackle Darnell Wright, another player with first-round talent, got Bresee on this play for that exact reason.  Bresee could also do with a bit more functional upper-body strength; his hell-for-leather style doesn’t work as well when he’s getting buried by blockers who gain the leverage advantage.  Conclusion: Right now, Bresee would fit like a proverbial glove in any front in need of one-gap disruptors who go 100 miles per hour on every play, and can do so from any gap. Where he’s a bit of a project, and where the upside is really exciting, is how much he’ll be able to advance his hand work and pure power with next-level coaching and weight work. Were we to stamp all of that with a seal of approval, Bresee might have a few All-Pro nods in his future.  NFL Comparison: Darnell Dockett. Selected in the third round of the 2004 draft by the Cardinals out of Florida State, Dockett was a more powerful man than Bresee at 6-foot-3 and 293 pounds, but the quickness to the backfield from multiple gaps tracks pretty well. And if Bresee can add to his technique palette when he hits the NFL, those similarities could play even more obviously.) He is a talented player, and served as an anchor on Clemson’s defense when healthy. But, injuries took most of his 2021 campaign away from him, and a kidney infection kept him sidelined at times in 2022.  With the injury history and a lack of dominant production, Bresee is better suited as a later pick. His stock has also been hurt by the emergence of Calijah Kancey. I can tell you they love two of those guys. It doesn’t get more Pittsburgh Steelers than potentially drafting Kelee Ringo at 17, considering their history of drafting the position early. If I’m a Steelers fan, I’m really hoping that the two players the brass loves are Darnell Wright and Bryan Bresee.  There’s no denying the need for reinforcements on the offensive line. Bresee is also an interesting candidate for Pittsburgh. He was the best player on Clemson’s defense as a redshirt freshman, but between injury and tragedy, was unable to produce at the same rate as a redshirt sophomore.  Still, Bresee is a perfect mold for the modern defensive linemen who must be able to play as an under tackle in even fronts and as a 4i or 5-technique in odd front looks, which Pittsburgh often uses to field both outside linebackers and three “interior” linemen.) 2023 NFL Draft DT prospect rankings: Jalen Carter leads a gifted group (2. Bryan Bresee, Clemson, 6-6, 298 Redshirt Sophomore - Overview: While the aforementioned Carter is the consensus top talent among defensive tackles in this draft, Bresee (pronounced "Bruh-ZEE") held that position three years ago, signing with Clemson as the top overall recruit, regardless of position, in the eyes of some scouts — and clearly the best interior lineman. He had a monster senior season in Damascus, Maryland, where he took his team to a state title and recorded 47 tackles, including 30.5 for loss and 14 sacks. Bresee certainly lived up to expectations his first year on the Clemson campus, earning first-team All-ACC honors and the league's Rookie of the Year honors by starting 10 games, recording 33 tackles, including 6.5 for loss and four sacks — one of them a game-clincher against Boston College that resulted in a safety. He also blocked a kick against Wake Forest, the first for the Tigers since 2018.  Unfortunately, Bresee's freshman in 2020 was his best year at Clemson, as he's suffered various ailments since, including a torn ACL, undergoing shoulder surgery and a kidney infection. Bresee played in 25 of a possible 39 games over the past three seasons, leaving the Tigers early for the NFL with 51 total tackles during that time, including 15 tackles for loss and nine sacks. Strengths: Bresee has an imposing frame, including rare height for the position, broad shoulders and impressive overall weight distribution. He springs out of his stance for such a large man, showing the same burst off the ball as he did in recording an eye-popping 4.86 second 40-yard dash at nearly 300 pounds. He shows rare athleticism for someone so large, eating up ground with bounding steps that allow him to close on ballcarriers much quicker than they expect. He has surprising balance and creativity as a pass rusher, incorporating strong push/pull, over-arm swims and even stop-start hesitation moves typically associated with edge defenders, showing the skillset to line up all over the defensive line. For a big man, Bresee also plays with surprising pad level, anchoring effectively, even against double-teams. Though he's missed plenty of time, when he's on the field, Bresee's impact is obvious.  Concerns: Just as obvious, however, are Bresee's struggles to remain on the field. He requires as thorough a medical evaluation as any prospect in this draft, being limited to just four games in 2021 and playing with a shoulder harness in 2022 after undergoing surgery prior to the season. He's active in the tackle box but isn't the threat in pursuit that his 40-yard dash suggests, typically running out of gas by the end of the tackle box. He was also surrounded by a virtual all-star team and was frequently subbed out.  Bottom Line: Bresee is among the most gifted big men in this draft, with the kind of talent that might require top-10 consideration if the medical red flags weren't so ominous. Optimists will point out that even with the hiccups, Bresee was a dominant force for much of his Clemson career. Ranking the top DTs in this year’s class (Tier 2 — First round buzz, possible options at 18 - Bryan Bresee (Clemson), 6-foot-5, 298 pounds:  Bresee is more of an unfinished product than guys like Kancey and Carter, but he does have the size and tools that will warrant a high selection in the draft.  When watching Bresee’s 2022 tape, you’ll see him sitting on blocks often and being pretty inactive as a pass rusher, but you really get to see his potential when you throw on his film versus North Carolina where he dominated throughout.  During the 2022 season, the Bresee family was struck with awful news when Bresee’s younger sister, Ella Bresee, passed away at only 15 years old from brain cancer. He would miss the Louisiana Tech game to be with his family, and then later missed some more time due to a kidney infection.  How he fits: Versatile and used all over Clemson’s defensive front. Can play anywhere from the 5-technique in, but will be at his best as a 3- or 4i/5-tech in Detroit. Pro Day News and Rumors: Adetomiwa Adebawore, Cam Smith, and Bryan Bresee Impress Teams (His linemate Bryan Bresee impressed the people who came to see him today. He tipped the scales at 302 pounds, four pounds heavier than his Combine weight.  Bresee redid the bench press and completed 28 reps, significantly better than his mark of 22 from Indianapolis. His short shuttle time was fast at 4.43 seconds, and his three-cone time of 7.39 seconds was an outstanding mark. The short shuttle time would’ve put him at the top of the defensive tackle chart at the Combine. Bresee looked outstanding in drills and was impressively athletic.  The school put out a medical memo affirming Bresee did not suffer any injuries last season, rather the kidney infection he was dealing with was the cause of his problems. Primarily the medicine prescribed to Bresee for the infection caused massive weight gain, and it weighed him down.  The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to show interest in the athletic D,t as are the Vikings and Jaguars. 2023 NFL Draft: All-Defensive Scouting Combine Team (Bryan Bresee, Clemson:  With a jaw dropping 4.86 forty time, Bresee could have sat out the rest of the drills eating a freshly opened bag of Doritos and been hailed one of the biggest benefactors to perform at the NFL Combine. Bresee earned second-team All-ACC selection this past season and measured in at 6-foot-5 and 298 pounds. He proved to easily be one of the most athletic players at the position. Bresee was a one-man wrecking crew for Clemson against Louisville, keeping a variety of offensive schemes in check.  Against Malik Cunningham in the first half, Bresee was quick to win inside while maintaining vision of Cunningham’s scrambling ability. After Cunningham was injured on the last play of the first half, Bresee’s game plan changed as he pinned his ears back to get after backup QB Brock Domann.  It all led to Bresee’s 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack that told just a fraction of his overall impact as he changed the game for Clemson.) Particularly on defense, first-round defensive line prospect Bryan Bresee has already been a nightmare to deal with. Lions draft watch: Clemson vs. Notre Dame scouting preview (Clemson DT Bryan Bresee:  Bresee is a playmaking defensive tackle who has a game that draws some from former Lions All-Pro Ndamukong Suh. Bresee is quick off the snap and can win over either shoulder of the guard or center. While Bresee lacks anchor strength as an interior run defender, the 300-pounder compensates in the way Suh did, by being freakishly strong in short bursts and using that to disengage or seize the advantage.  The biggest question for Bresee is durability. He tore his ACL in 2021 and has missed time in 2022 with a kidney issue (as well as dealing with the death of his sister from cancer). For a Lions team that has shown little aversion to prospects with durability questions, that shouldn’t dissuade Detroit. The long, versatile, and sudden defensive lineman looked like a future top pick as an true freshman for the Tigers, accumulating four sacks and 6.5 tackles behind the line across 430 snaps. Hype intensified. Early in 2021, Bresee was a menace against the run and flashed again as a pass rusher. He then tore his ACL against NC State only four contests into the season and a shoulder surgery kept him off the field for spring practice. Bresee's injuries are holding him back. That's it. DI BRYAN BRESEE, CLEMSON (PFF Board Rank: 6 | Freaks List Rank: 14):  I keep going back to Bresee's weight rather than his workout numbers, as I can’t recall any rising junior holding 310 pounds on his frame with such ease.  That low body fat for a defensive tackle is likely what makes him such a special athlete for the position. When he did get to go one-on-one, you saw him take advantage.  He possesses a unique build for a defensive tackle in that he’s 300 pounds yet well proportioned throughout his frame. At first glance, he looks like a jumbo defensive end. That kind of body type can fill multiple roles along a front four at the next level.
