2023 NFL Draft: PFF analysts name their favorite draft prospects (BEN BROWN: CB KELEE RINGO, GEORGIA (Big board rank: 66, Mock draft ADP: 33.4):  At some point, it just makes too much sense. Ringo has the prototypical size for the position, runs a sub-4.4 40 and is coming off two productive seasons playing on the best defense in college football. And he is yet to turn 21 years of age.  As a 19-year-old, he ranked in the 94th percentile for Wins Above Average (WAA) generated among cornerbacks. 6 NFL draft prospects who are sliding down big boards (and could be massive bargains) (6.  CB Kelee Ringo:  At the finish line of the 2021 NCAA season, Ringo was the man sprinting toward the end zone on a 79-yard pick-six that sealed the Bulldogs’ first national title in 41 years. With eight passes defensed in his debut season, he possessed the potential to be Georgia’s next great first round defender.  Ringo was fine in 2022, he just wasn’t transcendent. His passer rating allowed rose from 63.2 to a still-pretty-good 68.4. He once again had two interceptions and roughly the same counting stats. He was a second-team All-SEC performer, which is only a disappointment when you’re a first-team preseason All-American.  It’s possible Ringo’s draft slot winds up being a victim of his own potential. Some teams may believe he’s hit his ceiling under Kirby Smart. But it’s more likely the former five-star recruit — the guy with a big 6-foot-2 frame and the speed to turn and run with anyone — is still growing.  The concern with Ringo is a lack of coverage instincts that led him to rely more on his athleticism and do work in recovery. That creates some boom-or-bust tendencies akin to Marcus Peters’ work on Sundays. It’s concerning, sure, but it’s a trait that can be coached away over time. Factor in his ability to be an absolute hammer against the run and you’ve got a player who’s an asset even with occasional misreads.  The bottom line is Ringo is a cornerback with coveted size and all the athletic hallmarks of a guy you’d trust in man coverage outside. And there’s a chance he could slip to the middle of Day 2. He’ll need the right environment to thrive right away and will likely have some grim learning moments as a rookie no matter what, but he’s also going to find his place on highlight reels throughout his career — in a good way.) 2023 NFL Draft cornerback rankings: Christian Gonzalez the best of a talented group (4. Kelee Ringo, Georgia, 6-2, 207, Redshirt Sophomore - Overview: Arizona and Washington are hardly hotbeds for SEC teams, but that is where Ringo excelled prior to signing with the Bulldogs, starring for three years at Saguaro High after previously winning state titles in the 100 and 200 meters as a freshman for Bellarmine High in Tacoma. Ringo signed with Georgia as a highly celebrated five-star recruit but his coronation had to wait a year after he suffered a significant shoulder injury, forcing him to redshirt.  Ringo seized a starting role for one of the most talented defenses in recent college football history a year later, earning Freshman All-SEC honors by leading the Bulldogs with 10 passes defensed, as well as 34 tackles. Most notably, Ringo sealed Georgia’s national championship with a 79-yard pick-six of Bryce Young to beat Alabama in 2021. He started all 15 games for the Bulldogs in 2022 as well, earning Second Team All-SEC honors with similar numbers, once again leading the Bulldogs in pass breakups (nine) with 42 tackles and two more interceptions.  Strengths: Exceptional speed for a player of his size, tying for the sixth-fastest time (4.36) recorded at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, with all the players quicker than him weighing at least nine pounds less and many significantly more than that. Ringo easily runs with receivers downfield, staying stride for stride and uses his frame and understanding of positioning to pin receivers into the sideline. Graceful athlete who changes directions with strong, sudden movements. Rare size for the position, possessing the frame to body-up the massive receivers in today’s NFL. Quick to read run and takes his role in run defense seriously, fighting through blockers and delivering powerful hits, which extend to his role as a gunner on special teams. Good hand-eye coordination with 19 passes defensed the past two seasons and four interceptions, including the game-sealer in the 2021-22 national title game. Concerns: There were troubling moments on tape where he was caught falling off tackles and asleep in coverage. He's overly reliant on his size and athleticism to "body up" receivers but shows just average route anticipation at this time, flailing his arms and grabbing cloth when he’s caught leaning. He has spotty timing and accuracy with his jam. He's similarly lacking in his fundamentals as a tackler, too often failing to securely wrap his arms, an issue that might require a closer look by a team’s medical personnel, given that he missed the 2020 season due to shoulder surgery (torn labrum).  Bottom Line: Ringo reminds me of a young Patrick Peterson when he was entering the NFL as a massive (6-0, 219) and ultra-athletic (4.34 in the 40-yard dash) cornerback out of LSU back in 2011 and some projected that he, too, might be best suited to safety. Peterson had plenty of holes on tape, as well, but his exceptional size/speed combination earned him the No. 5 overall selection that year and might just earn him a spot in Canton someday. Like Peterson then, many of Ringo’s flaws appear correctable with more time. While it’s never a good idea to speak in absolutes as a draft analyst, Ringo’s traits are exactly what teams bank on in Round 1. Most polarizing draft prospects: 10 names to debate (Kelee Ringo:  Argument for: The ultra-athletic defender possesses the size, speed and explosion to develop into a premier cover corner in the right scheme. Ringo's natural ability gives him a chance to succeed with shoddy technique, but a little more polish and skill refinement could help the Georgia product blossom into a blue-chip player as a pro.   Argument against: As a straight-line athlete with raw technique, Ringo is an inconsistent performer on the perimeter. He maintains solid positioning in coverage, but fails to finish at the ball. While he has the potential to develop into an A+ bump-and-run corner due to his athleticism, Ringo needs to master other parts of the game to become a blue-chip player in a versatile defensive system. Where I stand: Ringo's world-class speed (4.36-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine) and athleticism give him a chance to become a dynamic defender. For starters, he struggled on the biggest stage against Ohio State’s top receiver, in Marvin Harrison Jr., in the College Football Playoff semifinal.  He followed that up with a subpar performance at the Scouting Combine. 2023 NFL Draft: The top 11 cornerbacks (10. Kelee Ringo, Georgia (Height: 6′ 1¾” (90th), Weight: 207 (93rd), 40-Yard Dash: 4.36 (92nd), 10-Yard Split: 1.54 (53rd), Vertical Jump: 33½” (17th), Broad Jump: 122″ (49th), Wingspan: 74 1/8″ (24th), Arm Length: 31¼” (42nd), Hand Size: 8½” (7th)) - Bio: Ringo came out of Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Arizona as the No. 4 overall prospect nationally, the No. 1 cornerback nationally, and the top prospect in Arizona, and he committed to Georgia at the All-American Bowl in front of a national television audience. He redshirted the entire 2020 season recovering from off-season surgery, but he made the Coaches’ Freshman All-SEC Team in 2021 with 15 games and 12 starts.  Over two seasons with the Bulldogs, Ringo had one sack, one pressure, 71 tackles, 19 stops, and he allowed 66 catches on 137 targets for 898 yards, 303 yards after the catch, four touchdowns, four interceptions, nine pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 67.1. He played 1,474 snaps at outside cornerback, 87 in the box, 50 in the slot, and five along the defensive line.  Stat to Know: Ringo in man coverage in 2022: 17 catches on 33 targets for 232 yards, no touchdowns, one interception, and an opponent passer rating of 61.7. Ringo in zone coverage in 2022: 15 catches on 30 targets for 203 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and an opponent passer rating of 80.3. We’ll get into the specific reasons for this disparity in efficiency.  Strengths: If you were only allowed to watch Ringo cover receivers in a relatively straight line down the field, you could be excused for wanting to select him with a top 10 pick. On this interception against Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker, and covering underrated receiver Cedric Tillman, Ringo has it on lock, because all he has to do is turn and go.  There are instances of Ringo making advances against his liabilities, staying in phase, and preventing plays beyond the first move. If he can build on this pass-off pass deflection against LSU, we might have something here.  Weaknesses: Ringo is a good straight-line cornerback, but things get weird when he’s asked to take angles and make quick transitions. This rep against Marvin Harrison Jr., which would have been a completion based on Ringo’s coverage were it not an overthrow, is but one example.  As much that LSU pass deflection gives hope regarding Ringo’s short-area quickness in development, there’s still far to much problematic tape like this.  Conclusion: There are two players in this draft class whose tape is more frustrating to study than any other, and that’s Ringo, and Kentucky quarterback Will Levis, because I have absolutely no clue what I’m getting from snap to snap. To make it more clear in Ringo’s, I know what I’m getting if Ringo can just trail without transitioning, and I know what I’m getting when he’s forced to do more. As “more” is quite often a requirement in today’s NFL, I’m not really sure how Ringo fits into a modern professional defense. I can say that he needs to play man and trail receivers vertically, but how many times will NFL quarterbacks let him get away with that, and not poke at the obvious liabilities?  NFL Comparison: Chris Gamble. The player comp works, and the comp name also does, because Ringo is a gambler on the field for good and bad. Gamble was great for the Panthers from 2004 through 2012 when he could just get right up on top of a receiver and go for it, but would tend to get a bit lost when spatial awareness and short-area closing skills were required. Ringo has that to deal with in his NFL transition, unless he lands with a team that lets him go mano a mano more often than not. As I’ve said, the success of that proposition is a mystery.) While there remain concerns about where he’ll find his most success on Sundays, he’s an elite athlete, excellent when asked to work laterally at the line of scrimmage, and touts all the physical traits to develop into a high-level corner. I want to see improvement in his flexibility in his lower half to smooth out his transitions in man, but the foundation is there for Ringo to succeed for a long time.) 2023 NFL Draft rankings: The top-15 CBs in this year’s class (Tier 3 — Could sneak into the first round.  Kelee Ringo (Georgia), 6-foot-1, 207 pounds.  Ringo is a former five-star recruit and CB1 in the 2020 recruiting class. He was projected to be the first CB off the board in the upcoming draft for quite some time, but his lack of starting experience and inconsistent tape has resulted in him falling into the borderline Day 1 pick range.  What stands out the most about Ringo is his imposing size and elite athleticism. He’s a former track star that ran a 4.36 40-yard dash at the combine despite being a good 10+ pounds heavier than most of the other corners in this class.  Ringo has only two years of starting experience under his belt and is lacking the production and technique you’d like to see from someone that is likely going to get drafted this high. He is scheme independent but seems more suited to play in a scheme with heavy zone concepts right away. (Kelee Ringo, CB:  It’s rare for a prospect to be labeled as a likely early-round pick and still have a potential range as large as Kelee Ringo. He could be a mid-Round 1 selection, or he could fall to Day 2. The possibilities are vast with the Georgia CB — a product of both the strong CB class and his polarizing athletic profile.  Ringo has the size and speed. He ran a 4.36 40-yard dash at 6’2″, 207 pounds at the NFL Combine. But his explosiveness numbers were average at best, and he didn’t partake in agility drills. 2023 NFL Combine Winners Day 2: It's (another) bumper crop of cornerback talent (5.  CB Kelee Ringo, Georgia:  Ringo’s stock has slid in the space between his second-straight national title and the 2023 Combine. His consensus big board rank dropped from a peak of fifth down to the mid-20s headed into workouts. His performance Friday helped reassure scouts that, yes, he remains a top tier cornerback prospect.  The Georgia product measured in at 6-foot-2 and a solid 207 pounds, then ripped off a 4.36 second 40 and smooth hips in coverage drills to prove he can do this at the next level. 2023 NFL Draft Stock - Conference Championships (Down - Kelee Ringo, CB, Georgia:  Some in the media have pushed Georgia cornerback Kelee Ringo as a high first-rounder for the 2023 NFL Draft, but many NFL teams have him graded on Day 2. His performance in the SEC Championship game suggested why the pros are not as high on Ringo.  Midway through the game, LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers torched Ringo on a deep post to get open for a 59-yard gain. Ringo was fortunate that Nabers fell down while making the catch, as he would have gone for an 80-yard touchdown. Later in the third quarter, Ringo lost track of the ball while in coverage in the end zone, so he just hugged the receiver and drew a pass interference.  In the fourth quarter, Ringo was slow to adjust to a receiver, who darted underneath him to put up a reception of about 30 yards. On the same drive, Nabers got open versus Ringo on a comeback route. To end that possession, Jaray Jenkins got behind Ringo and then cut across the field, and Ringo could not keep up with him, allowing a 33-yard touchdown.  Ringo has good size and straight-line speed, but he has major issues with stiffness, which leads to him giving up separation when receivers make cuts in their routes. 6 p.m. — We’re getting déjà vu here. Not long after getting his first pick, Gonzalez got his second, and it was even better than the first. Shading back in zone coverage, Gonzalez quickly recognized an out route in the intermediate range. As soon as he recognized the play, Gonzalez effortlessly transitioned out of his backpedal, exploded upfield, and swooped in front of the WR to make the play. He then nearly returned it for a score.  Gonzalez came into the 2022 season with all the tools, and now, he’s delivered with proven production. Ahead of schedule, Gonzalez is one of the top CBs in the 2023 NFL Draft. IC.  Christian Gonzalez Continues To Convert on Physical Gifts - 5:45 p.m. — Week 1 was a “Welcome to the big leagues” moment for Christian Gonzalez, who struggled in coverage and run support against Georgia. Week 10 NFL Draft Prospect Battles To Watch: Kayshon Boutte, Eli Ricks Square Off (Tennessee WRs Jalin Hyatt, Cedric Tillman vs. Georgia DBs Kelee Ringo, Christopher Smith - We can lump Hendon Hooker in this prospect battle, too. But Hooker has passed every test so far, to the point where his 2023 NFL Draft stock is relatively stable. His receivers Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman, however, have more to prove against a talented Georgia secondary.  Hyatt has dominated this year with his game-breaking speed. Tillman, now fully healthy, has a chance to remind onlookers what he can provide as an alpha receiver with size and speed on the boundary.  That said, Kelee Ringo has the size, physicality, and athleticism to lock down Tillman. Christopher Smith will also be a looming threat in zone with his intelligence and closing speed.  Both Ringo and Smith are quality DB prospects, and Ringo has first-round aspirations. If you don’t like the idea of spending another high pick on an off-the-ball player, you can skip to the next player.  A check-the-boxes physical specimen, Ringo has the size, speed, and physicality to be a CB1 in the NFL. Cornerbacks to watch for the 2023 NFL draft (Kelee Ringo, Georgia:  Kelee Ringo was a consensus five-star recruit coming out of Saguaro High School in Arizona, and was viewed as the top cornerback in the 2020 recruiting class by 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN. He announced his decision to attend Georgia during the 2020 All-American Bowl.  He redshirted his freshman season at Georgia, as he recovered from surgery to repair a torn labrum. But he returned to the field this past season in a big way. He played in all of Georgia’s games this past year, starting 12 for the Bulldogs. He was second on the team with eight pass breakups, and recorded a pair of interceptions. Ringo was named to the Freshman All-SEC team at the end of the year.  One of those interceptions sealed the national title game.  With just year of play under him, it is not a lock that Ringo enters the 2023 NFL draft. But if his 2022 campaign looks anything like his 2021 season, that decision might be an easy one for him next winter.)
