2023 NFL Draft Week Rumors Thursday (A shocking late development this week was that some recent medical reports changed the draft status of Texas Tech defensive end Tyree Wilson. The reason why is that the team feels Wilson's foot injury was not addressed successfully.  "I looked at the X-ray of his foot, and it looks like Frankenstein. It's all mangled," said a director of player personnel. "We dropped him off our board. Our doctors think they're going to have to re-do it. You have to ask, 'How soon are you getting what you think you are getting?' Whatever they did to his foot, it's not right. He could go out and practice and his his foot will start hurting, and then he'll get shut down and they will have to re-do it."  As a result of the injury, that team thinks Wilson could have slide in the top 10. They do not believe Wilson will go as a top-five pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.One player who has gone under-hyped during the 2023 NFL Draft process is Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Many teams use a color-based grade scale, with Blue signifying an elite starter, Red/Warm marking a good starter, Red indicating a solid starter, and below that are backup quality players. The 2023 NFL Draft is not especially strong, and Gibbs is one of the few players who received a blue grade. Multiple team sources feel Gibbs could be an Alvin Kamara- or Jamaal Charles-type running back in the NFL. The other consensus blue players in the 2023 NFL Draft are Bijan Robinson, Will Anderson, Tyree Wilson and Jalen Carter. Some teams gave blue grades to Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Devon Witherspoon. But if they pass on him there, it is somewhat of a process to find him a home in the top 10. He could go at No. 3, if available, but I believe the Arizona Cardinals would opt for Paris Johnson Jr. to upgrade their offensive line. The Indianapolis Colts are going quarterback (we assume). The Seattle Seahawks could be interested but would have quarterbacks and Jalen Carter on the board. The Detroit Lions and Las Vegas Raiders would likely pass on him.  The Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears are the most likely landing spots, but there are other players they could covet at different positions — Bijan Robinson or a cornerback for the Falcons, or an offensive lineman for the Bears.  It is still possible this could all just be fiction. Designed to set the edge and push the pocket, Wilson possesses ideal size and length for an edge defender. His 35 5/8-inch arms rank in the top five percent of edge defenders since 2003.  The 6-foot-6 Wilson consistently improved throughout his college career, peaking with a tremendous redshirt senior year in which he more than doubled his pass-rush efficiency. According to PFF, he achieved the third-highest pressure rate (20.7 percent) among all FBS defenders with at least 200 pass rushes last season, earning first-team All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America.  Unfortunately, a foot injury prematurely ended Wilson's final season in Lubbock, ultimately prompting him to forgo on-field drills at the combine and Texas Tech's pro day. 2023 NFL Draft: The top 8 edge defenders (2. Tyree Wilson, Texas Tech (Height: 6′ 6⅛” (95th percentile), Weight: 271 (68th), Bench Press: 23 reps (48th), Arm Length: 35⅝” (96th), Hand Size: 9⅝” (34th)) - Bio: Wilson was a three-star recruit out of high school, but he chose Texas A&M over offers from (among other schools) Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Houston, Kansas, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, SMU, TCU, Texas and Washington State. He entered the transfer portal after two seasons (one a redshirt) with the Aggies and landed with the Red Raiders. Over four seasons on the field, mostly with Texas Tech, Wilson totaled 18 sacks, 18 quarterback hits, 76 quarterback hurries, 75 tackles, 69 stops, and one forced fumble. He also had one pass breakup on five targets in coverage.  Wilson had 1,035 snaps outside the tackles, 493 over the tackles, and 126 in the B-gaps. He also had five in the box and three in the slot… for whatever reason.  Stat to Know: Wilson’s Pressure Rate +/- (Pressure Rate above or below an expected pressure rate as determined by the quarterback’s drop type, the down and distance, the score, the use of play action, and the defender’s alignment) of 11.2% was by far the highest for any player on this list. He also had the highest Quick Pressure Rate (percentage of pass rushes that resulted in the player generating the first pressure on the quarterback and doing so in 2.5 seconds or less) at 6%.  Strengths: Wilson’s pass-rush plans are still very unrefined, but there are plays in which he’s able to take his athletic gifts and fierce determination to the pocket, and just wreck multiple blockers. When you hear about Wilson’s utterly insane upside, plays like this sack against North Carolina State, in which he demolishes the left tackle and the left guard on the way to the quarterback, this is what is meant by that.  Where you really get excited about Wilson’s NFL potential is when you watch him just erase guards as an inside pass-rusher. Wilson isn’t just an upright athlete with no pass-rush subtleties; he can bring strong hands and some bend and flexibility as a multi-gap guy. His NFL coaches should maximize the heck out of it.  And you’d better block Wilson with intent when he’s coming after your running back, or it’s going to start looking like Shark Week out there.  Weaknesses: Wilson’s rawness and his eagerness to go kill the guy with the ball will make him look like an overmatched kid on the playground at times. He is susceptible and vulnerable to misdirection… …and he wouldn’t be my first choice to cover anyone in the slot or from a zone exchange.  Not that it’s easy to get Wilson in a situation where he’s losing the leverage advantage, but if you compress his wingspan off the edge, that’s where his lack of a pass-rush plan shows up. He’s so used to dominating college tackles, it could be a rough go for a while against the best the NFL has to offer. He must develop counters to attack after he’s been beaten, and he must avoid a tendency to come off the snap late.  Conclusion: Selecting Wilson in the first round, which some team will undoubtedly do, will give that team the fifth-year option, and that’s important in this case. Wilson might need what amounts to a redshirt NFL season in which he puts it all together from a technical perspective, and becomes the best version of what his physical upside will allow. That should be a terrifying thought for anybody who has to block him, because we just don’t see potential like this at the position very often.  NFL Comparison: Jason Pierre-Paul. The Giants selected Pierre-Paul out of USF with the 15th pick in the 2010 draft despite the fact that Pierre-Paul was quite raw, because his tools were off the charts. Sound familiar? Well, it took Pierre-Paul exactly one season to blow up in the NFL’s face, with a 17-sack, 72-pressure season in 2011 in which he was just about unblockable from anywhere in Big Blue’s fronts. His three-season improvement as measured by computer vision is pretty astounding; this includes his game-measured burst (speed and time it takes to travel the first 3 yards), which increased an average of 0.5 seconds. Dunlap’s a sure tackler (zero percent missed tackle rate in 2022, per computer vision) who, by PFF's count, has averaged 52 pressures per season over his 13-year career. The Falcons could really use that kind of reliability.  TEAM FIT: Atlanta Falcons.  Wilson’s three seasons of Texas Tech data suggest that we could have an above-average upside pick here. Many draft prospects grow and evolve in the NFL, but Wilson could really pop. The Falcons started addressing their pass rush in free agency by signing David Onyemata and Calais Campbell. Also adding Wilson would create the most upside for the team as well as the player in a division in transition.) He redshirted his first year on campus and collected 12 tackles, including three for loss and 1.5 sacks for A&M in 2019 before transferring to Texas Tech, where he initially lined up at defensive tackle, registering 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 2020. The light seemed to turn on once Wilson was moved outside to defensive end over the final four games of that season and he exploded at this position in 2021, starting all 13 games and leading the Red Raiders in both tackles for loss (13.5) and sacks (seven) with 38 stops, overall. Wilson was again moved in 2022, switching to a stand-up rush linebacker role, where he became the first edge rusher from Tech to earn All-American honors since 1998 (Montae Reagor), jumping up to 61 tackles with 14 tackles for loss and another seven sacks despite missing the final three games of the season after suffering a foot injury that required season-ending surgery and kept him from participating in the Combine or Texas Tech's original Pro Day.   Areas of Strength: Wilson is a testament to the cliché that everything is bigger in Texas, wowing scouts at the Combine with his imposing frame and wingspan. His 35 5/8" arms are arguably his greatest asset as he uses them to stack blockers at the point of attack in the running game and to ward off opponents on his way towards the quarterback. Even when's being effectively blocked, Wilson is so long and powerful, he is able to affect the quarterback by collapsing the pocket or clouding passing lanes. For such a large player, Wilson shows good lateral agility and closing speed, eluding would-be blockers and tracking down ball carriers with impressive backside pursuit. He wasn't featured on twists and stunts at Texas Tech but shows intriguing potential in this area. Wilson offers all sorts of scheme and positional versatility. Most of his big plays are generated due to his natural traits, suggesting that with a little more refining of his technique Wilson could be a significantly more impactful player than he already is. Areas of Concern: Wilson is still putting it all together. He lacks the consistent explosive get-off most expect of a such a highly touted prospect and, at times, is flat late off the ball. Doesn't play as big or mean as his imposing frame might suggest, winning as often with finesse as mauling power. He loses the pad level battle too often, negating his own strength. Underwent two separate surgeries on his right foot — one on November 21 to stabilize a fracture and another March 21 to remove the hardware, with his surgeon advising him not to sweat and irritate the incision, therefore pushing back his workout and forcing teams to wait on their final medical evaluation.  Bottom Line: Wilson promises to be one of the more polarizing prospects on this list, as scouts are split on his upside. There is no denying his unique combination of size, athleticism and power but he remains more of a prospect than a finished product. That is not what most are looking for in a likely top-10 selection. He is a great example of your prototypical NFL pass rusher. Standing at over six feet six inches and weighing 276 pounds, he already has the size you want to see in a professional pass rusher. 2023 NFL Draft Stock - Week 10 (Tyree Wilson, DE, Texas Tech:  Wilson and the Texas Tech defensive line were the big reason why the Red Raiders were able to hold TCU to just 13 points before the fourth quarter. TCU eventually pulled away with 21 fourth-quarter points and is now a top-5 team.  In the first quarter against the Horned Frogs, Wilson shed his offensive tackle and flew into the backfield to pick up a tackle for a loss on a third-and-short. That forced a punt and got his defense off the field. Later in the second quarter, the Horned Frogs used Wilson's aggressiveness against him, allowing him to fire up field while the running back darted through the open gap. On the next play, Wilson blew by the offensive tackle and met a teammate at the quarterback to get in on a sack. Late in the third quarter, Wilson had a sack that was called for a facemask on the play. It was really just bad luck, as Wilson had defeated the block from the left tackle to get free and the quarterback ducked his head into Wilson's hand.  Wilson's performance against TCU will should help his draft stock, as he showed the strength to shed blocks, the quickness to close, and an ability to set the edge in the ground game. And now he’s finally starting to put it together on the field consistently. After recording 37 pressures on 352 pass-rushing snaps last year, Wilson already has 27 pressures on 120 pass-rushing snaps in 2022. More impressive, though, are his 15 run stops through five games. It’s not often you find an edge rusher built like him — standing at 6’6″, 275 pounds with 35 5/8″ arms and an 86″ wingspan. But all the talk was of potential. Week 3 felt like an emergence for Wilson, who logged two sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss against a talented NC State team.  There’s still room for Wilson to play with more discipline, but his disruptive capacity is nearly unmatched in the class. He brings absurd power and hand strength, with surprising athleticism and flexibility for his size. 2023 NFL Draft: Top 25 Senior Bowl prospects entering Week 3 of college football season (3. Tyree Wilson, Edge, Texas Tech (6-6, 275):  Wilson overwhelmed Murray State offensive linemen in the run game with his power and length during the Red Raiders' 63-10 win over Murray State on Sept. 3, collecting six tackles, including two for loss, in about three quarters of work. He had four tackles in the team's double-overtime win over Houston last week, three against the run and one late in the game, stopping a third-down screen pass to force a punt. Wilson impacted the game throughout, however, even though he faced tough competition in Cougars left tackle Patrick Paul. The long edge rusher pressured quarterback Clayton Tune by bull-rushing both tackles but could not get off their blocks to get the sack. He stood up pre-snap for most of the game but displayed his scheme versatility by lining up at the 4i- and 5-technique positions late in the game, drawing a holding penalty on Houston's right guard.) Big 12 2023 NFL Draft prospects and scouting reports (Tyree Wilson, DE | Grade: 3.83 | Projected Round: 2.  Talk to NFL scouts and they’ll tell you that edge rusher Tyree Wilson is one of the highest-rated senior prospects in the nation. Some will even say he’s a mid-first-round prospect. Me? I’m not as high on Wilson.  The senior is an athletic specimen with a terrific frame and super long arms. Wilson easily moves around the field and flawlessly rushes the edge. He’s quick and has a closing burst. What Wilson doesn’t display is great strength at the point or pursuit speed. He’s controlled by a single opponent and doesn’t make a lot of plays out to the flanks in pursuit. The love thrown his way is based more on future potential than present dominance, hence the reason I presently grade Wilson as a second-round choice.) Top Texas Tech Red Raider Prospects to Watch in 2023 NFL Draft (DE Tyree Wilson:  It is hard to find players with the kind of tools Wilson possesses. He has elite length, explosion and power to accompany an NFL-ready body. There are a lot of similarities between Wilson and 2022 first overall pick Travon Walker stylistically. The arrow is pointing up with Wilson, and he is just scratching the surface of what he can become. With a productive season, Wilson should solidify himself as one of the best prospects in the draft. 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Notebook: Favorite Big 12 prospects upon initial study (Tyree Wilson, EDGE, Texas Tech: After his jaw-dropping NFL Combine performance, everyone will be looking for the next Travon Walker for the foreseeable future. The outcome of his career doesn’t necessarily matter in this context. No matter what happens, Walker is a moldable ball of clay with absurd athleticism, strength, and power capacity. Any defensive coordinator would want that kind of talent to work with and develop.  I won’t tell you there’s another Walker in the 2023 NFL Draft class. But I also won’t dismiss the possibility. Clemson’s Myles Murphy already draws parallels to that mold, but another monstrous edge rusher very much worth mentioning is Texas Tech’s Tyree Wilson.  Wilson — who logged 13.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks in 2021 — has an absurd frame, standing at 6’6″, 270 pounds with arms near 36″ long. With his length, Wilson brings elite power capacity, but he also has good burst, pursuit speed, and enough hip flexibility to redirect rushes.  Fire up the tape on Wilson, because odds are, you’re too low on him.)
