Top 10 Safeties in the 2023 NFL Draft: Brian Branch Emerging as the Top Prospect (10. Trey Dean III, Florida: The defining feature of the 2023 NFL Draft safety group is its overarching versatility. There’s a relative lack of traditional field safeties, but that scarcity is offset by dozens of multifaceted player types who can cover the slot and even match receivers in man. Florida’s Trey Dean III is one of the most intriguing safeties in that mold. His 4.68 40-yard dash is underwhelming, but he does play faster than his timed speed on tape. And at 6’2″, 200 pounds, with near-32″ arms, he has the burst, fluidity, and length to match in man, as well as cover move tight ends.) Who were the winners and losers of the 2023 NFL Combine? (Losers - Trey Dean III and Rashad Torrence II
The Florida safeties struggled on Day 2, especially in the 40-yard dash and 10-yard split. Dean (4.75) and Torrence (4.72) had the two slowest times in the 40 and tested near the bottom in the 10-yard split. Florida has had at least one defensive back drafted every since 2016, so it was a bit of a surprise Dean and Torrence did not perform better.) 20 Players Who Raised NFL Draft Stock During All-Star Games (Trey Dean III SAF, Florida: A talent expected to test well in Indianapolis, Dean’s stock has risen immensely inside of a rather weak safety class. It’s a group of talent with questions to be answered, and Dean’s ball-hawking nature could entice teams to take him higher than anyone expects. ) (2-8-23): https://thedraftnetwork.com/nfl-draft-2023-all-star-standouts/
Biggest 2023 NFL Draft risers from the Shrine and Senior bowls (S TREY DEAN, FLORIDA: Dean was an up-and-down player at Florida, but the best of his playmaking ability showed up in Vegas at the Shrine Bowl. After weighing in at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, Dean earned an 80.2 coverage grade during practices and even grabbed an interception during the game. He was one of the big winners from the secondary players at both the Shrine and Senior bowls.) (2-7-23): https://www.pff.com/news/draft-2023-nfl-draft-risers-shrine-senior-bowls
2023 East-West Shrine Bowl: 5 Players Soaring Up NFL Draft Boards (WEST) (S Trey Dean [Height: 6025 | Weight: 211 | Hand: 0948 | Arm: 3228 | Wingspan: 7668] – Arguably the most consistent performer from start to finish throughout the week, Dean is a moving chess piece on defense. He can lineup at any position in the secondary and even step in at linebacker if needed. His ball-hawk instincts, and ability to help out in the run game, in addition to being a competent cover man, makes him one of the top prospects in this year’s event. Dean was named East-West Shrine Bowl Defensive MVP for his efforts.) (2-3-23): https://www.si.com/nfl/draft/news/2023-east-west-shrine-bowl-players-rising-west-team
Final Risers From the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl Include Trey Dean III, Xazavian Valladay (Trey Dean III, S, Florida: You distinguish yourself by making plays. Trey Dean III made plays all week in Las Vegas and was the most consistent safety at the Shrine Bowl by far. On Monday, he notched two interceptions, both with his range and ball skills. And during the game, he had another pick — an excellent focus play off a deflection. None of this mentions Dean locking down opponents during 1-on-1s with his athleticism and technique. He’s a definite riser.) (2-3-23): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/final-risers-from-the-2023-east-west-shrine-bowl-include-trey-dean-iii-xazavian-valladay/
Florida's Trey Dean III, Michigan's Jake Moody lead West to victory over East in Shrine Bowl (The two teams combined for just 427 yards and each had two turnovers, with Defensive MVP Trey Dean III accounting for a pivotal takeaway. The Florida safety picked off a pass from Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan that bounced off his intended target's hands on first-and-goal for the East team late in the first half, ending a precious scoring chance.) Monday 2023 Shrine Bowl Risers: Kei’Trel Clark and Arquon Bush Continue To Impress (Trey Dean, S, Florida: Dean talked a big game during his interview with Pro Football Network this weekend, then backed up those words with his play on Monday. In the span of ten minutes, Dean made a pair of terrific interceptions during the full scrimmage. In both instances, he lined up as a free safety patrolling centerfield when he made the picks. He’s a physical safety with terrific size and better athleticism, which he put on display today.) (1-31-23): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/2023-shrine-bowl-risers-sliders-practice-monday/
Monday 2023 Shrine Bowl West Team Practice Report: WR Demario Douglas and S Trey Dean III Making Big Impressions (The safeties have largely had a rough time at the Shrine Bowl, both against wide receivers and tight ends. But there is one safety who’s risen above the pack: Florida’s Trey Dean III. Dean was to the defense what Douglas was to the offense on Monday. At his best, he was dominant, and he let people hear about it. Dean, who stands around 6’3″, 211 pounds, had two interceptions in team drills. Both interceptions were a result of him managing space well, reading the QB and transitioning quickly, and hawking under lofted passes with his explosive athleticism. He’s been able to put the clamps on receivers in one-on-ones with his agility and off-man technique, and he hasn’t been shy about imposing physicality. But on Monday, Dean showed something different and something very exciting for his projected growth. Dean has one of the highest ceilings among DBs in the 2023 NFL Draft. He can be a rangy playmaker at safety or an absolute eraser in the slot with his size and athleticism. It comes as no surprise that his confidence sticks out. After his second interception, Dean joked with Zay Flowers that he needed the Eagles WR out on the field to give him an adequate challenge. It’s big talk, but this week, Dean has done nothing but back it up.) The Hunt Report: East-West Shrine Bowl how to watch, top prospects, standout performers, practice notes, more (S Trey Dean III: 6-2 211, Florida: Dean's coverage skills and overall athleticism stood out to me the most. I knew he was an aggressive, downhill defender coming into the week, but watching him match up in man coverage vs. tight ends was good to see. Also, I think he's got more range than he gets credit for, as that was also on display this week during the practices. This won't show up on the stat sheet, but toward the end of practice Sunday, he walked down the line on the defensive sideline and shook the hand of every defender. I thought that was pretty cool.) Sunday 2023 Shrine Bowl West Team Practice Report: Colby Sorsdal and Brent Laing Improve (This receiver group is strong, but it’s met its match with the diverse and talented DB group on the West side. It was fun watching prospects like Trey Dean III, Starling Thomas, and Nic Jones transition in early DB drills. All three are effortless movers with quick foot speed, which translates in the team setting.) 8 Players Steelers Will Be Watching at East-West Shrine Bowl (S Trey Dean (Florida): Speaking of defensive backs with massive frames and length, Florida's Trey Dean is another exciting player to watch this weekend. Dean has plenty of positional versatility, having spent time at both safety spots, playing centerfield and in the box after transitioning from corner following his freshman season. The thing to take note of with Dean is his physicality, he's a player who plays with violent intentions on every snap. He's been extremely inconsistent on a snap-to-snap basis for the Gators' defense despite playing a lot of snaps, but the athletic tools are there for him to be a big-time contributor at the next level. He'll get the chance to cover some talented tight ends and slot receivers in drills this week, a role that he could certainly end up playing at the next level.(1-28-23): https://www.si.com/nfl/steelers/nfl-draft/players-pittsburgh-steelers-watching-east-west-shrine-bowl
Finding Broncos: 8 Shrine Game Prospects to Watch (Trey Dean II | S | Florida: Dean is a big-bodied safety that loves to be physical, though he can be too physical or grabby. He is a former corner that moved to safety and has shown he can be a versatile piece on the backend. The Shrine Game week will be an excellent time for him to show improvements with his timing, as well as reads of play-action.) 2023 Shrine Bowl: SEC NFL Draft Prospects Include Ricky Stromberg, Jadon Haselwood, and More (Florida S Trey Dean III: It’ll be interesting to see what kind of experience Trey Dean III accrues during Shrine Bowl week. Dean has ideal size, explosiveness, and physicality for a safety. But as a former cornerback, he also has the off-man technique, fluidity, and short-area flexibility to match receivers and blanket them in coverage. He’s a potential NFL chess piece to watch in Las Vegas.) (1-26-23): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/sec-nfl-draft-prospects-2023-shrine-bowl/
Top Safeties at the 2023 Shrine Bowl Include Bennett Williams, Trey Dean III, and Jordan Howden (3. Trey Dean III, Florida: After five years in the Swamp, most people know Trey Dean III down south. Now, the Florida Gator can put his name further on the map with a dominant performance at the Shrine Bowl. Dean is a bully over the middle of the field and a physically-imposing force at the catch point. He is a disciplined hitter and makes plays on the ball as frequently as he makes tackles around the line of scrimmage. Expect to hear Dean’s name often in Vegas.) College Football Week 9 Live Reactions, Results, and Takeaways (6:40 p.m. — It’s going to be very fun to evaluate Brock Bowers once he’s eligible in the 2024 NFL Draft cycle. The 6’4″, 230-pound weapon is a mismatch week in and week out, and it shows with what defensive teams throw against him. Moments ago, he beat defensive back Trey Dean III into the intermediate range with his explosiveness and used his superior play strength and catching instincts to wrestle away a crucial contested throw.) What makes Michigan's J.J. McCarthy, other stars shine? (Given Hooker’s deep-ball proficiency, perhaps the most intriguing "one-on-one" matchup of this game might be with Florida safety Trey Dean III, who, like Hooker, entered the year on the Senior Bowl’s watch list. Dean was terrific in last year’s 38-14 drubbing of Tennessee, collecting 11 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, both season-highs. He is a rangy, alert defender quick to trigger downhill to support the run. His value to the NFL, however, lies with his agility, speed and awareness in coverage. He not only can handle deep coverage responsibilities, Dean possesses the man-to-man cover skills to drop down and handle slot duties — as he often did a year ago against the Vols in Gainesville.) ACC 2023 NFL Draft prospects and scouting reports (Brandon Joseph, S | Grade: 3.74 | Projected Round: 3 - Many believe if Brandon Joseph entered April’s draft, he would’ve been a first-round choice. I disagree, and Joseph did the next-best thing; he transferred to Notre Dame from Northwestern and will look to improve his game. Joseph is an athletic safety with nice size, and he’s a terrific run defender who is very explosive up the field. Joseph possesses a lot of upside, but he must really polish his game. He’s often caught out of position, and his ball skills need work.) (8-22-22): https://www.profootballnetwork.com/acc-2023-nfl-draft-prospects-and-scouting-reports/
Florida’s 2023 NFL Draft prospects led by O’Cyrus Torrence, Anthony Richardson (Trey Dean III, S: Coming off arguably the best season of his career, Trey Dean III eschewed the NFL and returned for his fifth season with Florida. In doing so, he puts himself in the shop window as one of the top safeties in the 2023 NFL Draft. With 174 tackles, four interceptions, and 14 pass breakups, the Florida safety has been productive during his four years with the Gators. Dean has impressive size, length, and strength, and he puts those all together to be a menace in coverage. Furthermore, few at the position can hit with his ferocity.)
