2023 NFL Draft: The top 9 safeties (4. Jammie Robinson, Florida State (Height: 5′ 11″ (19th) Weight: 191 (5th), 40-Yard Dash: 4.59 (42nd), 10-Yard Split: 1.58 (47th), Bench Press: 23 reps (91st), Broad Jump: 116″ (20th), Arm Length: 29⅝” (2nd), Hand Size: 8¾” (12th)) - Bio: Robinson started his collegiate career at South Carolina and played there two seasons before transferring to Florida State before the 2021 season. Over four collegiate seasons, Robinson had one sack, 18 pressures, 223 tackles, 78 stops, and allowed 117 catches on 178 targets for 1,341 yards, 563 yards after the catch, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions, 11 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 84.5. He had 1,348 snaps in the slot, 759 at free safety, 633 in the box, 107 along the defensive line, and 61 at cornerback.  Stat to Know: In 2022, Robinson’s Deserved Catch Rate Allowed (the percentage of targets as the primary defender where the receiver either caught or dropped the ball when the pass was catchable) was 55%, the third-lowest among safeties behind only Boise State’s JL Skinner and Notre Dame’s Brandon Joseph.  Strengths: Robinson also had one sack and 14 total pressures on just 33 pass-rushing snaps last season — he blitzed on just 8% of his snaps, but his pressure rate of 40% ranked behind only Texas A&M’s Antonio Johnson Jr. When Robinson comes after a quarterback on a blitz, he’s got a very good chance of getting home and doing something very good for the defense.  Robinson’s closing speed and aggressive nature extends to his ability to create pass breakups and prevent receptions. He has a nice sense of getting himself in position to close on a receiver just as said receiver thinks he has the ball.  And as a run defender from the box or the edge, Robinson gets things done consistently in ways that belie his size.  Weaknesses: Robinson isn’t always as fluid as you’d like to match receivers through their routes — he seems to take a split second more than he should to get aligned at times, though guys catching the ball in his area will generally pay for it with limited yards after the catch.  And yes, there are times when Robinson’s combination of aggressiveness and size limitations has him bouncing right off a receiver instead of wrapping up and finishing the play.  Conclusion: If I’m an NFL defensive coordinator, and I’m in need of a fat dose of alpha on my roster, I’m begging my general manager to take Jammie Robinson in the second day of the draft, and crowbarring him into my defense wherever he best fits. This is absolutely a case in which NFL teams should focus on what a player can do, and not what he can’t, because Robinson has the look of a guy who will keep defying the odds at the NFL level.  NFL Comparison: John Johnson III. Like Johnson, the relatively undersized (6-foot-0, 209 pounds) safety who was a third-round pick of the Rams in 2017, Robinson does a lot more than people probably told him he could do with his size limitations. His testing numbers were average, and at times during drills, he looked almost like he was focusing too much on being technically sound instead of staying loose, which led to some rigidity that likely played into those scores.  When Robinson was loose, he displayed incredibly quick feet, rapidly picking them up and down like a typewriter working its way across the page. His focus on technique did help him with efficiency in drills, but when he relaxed, his natural skills took over. One of the best examples of this was in the figure eight drills near the end of the on-field workouts, when he moved with silky acceleration, ramping up, decelerating, and ramping up again at an impressive pace.) The receiver beat me with inside leverage, and he was running away from me, but I took the ball away; I stripped the ball out. That was a play where I didn’t have the best technique, but I gave the ball back to our offense.”  Robinson also pointed to a play against Miami in Week 10 of the 2022 season.  “It was a goal-line stop. I was blitzing from the edge, and I was going after the quarterback, but it was a zone read, but I knew that the quarterback was reading off of me, and our defensive end was locked on the quarterback. Jammie Robinson:  If you’re looking for a safety who can do a bit of everything, then Robinson is the player you want. He is very comparable to Buffalo Bills All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer.  He can play the run and the pass equally great and has a killer mentality. He is a phenomenal tackler in the backfield and one on one in space. He is a great leader and has a tireless motor, which becomes infectious to his teammates.  He racked up 99 tackles this past season, which is an incredible number from the safety position. Robinson should be a day-one starter for whatever gets him because he is just an overall great football player. It isn’t a stretch to say he is the top prospect at his position and will be a player who sticks out during the entire draft process because of his work ethic and football knowledge. 2023 Senior Bowl: Prospects with most to gain, lose (Most To Lose - Jammie Robinson, DB, Florida State:  Robinson played a unique, safety-linebacker role at Florida State and looked tremendously fast to the football his entire career with the Seminoles. As with Ward above, Robinson is one of the few safeties at this event who can pass for a cornerback in one-on-one drills with the receivers.  Robinson is one of the event’s highest-rated players. Coverage chops were one reason for that. I wanted to pass along an intangible aspect that I observed at practices. Robinson is very clearly a student of the game.  He’s one of those players who consistently seeks out coaching between drills— those few minutes when players are migrating to other areas of the field for their next assignment. Week 10 College Football Team of the Week: Tanner Mordecai Makes History for SMU (Safety: Jammie Robinson, Florida State:  In what amounted to the largest home loss for either team in this illustrious rivalry, the signal-caller on the Florida State defense was integral in the Seminoles’ success against Miami (FL). Robinson flew all around the field for FSU, helping to limit the ‘Canes to fewer than 200 yards all game long.  The first half was an incredible half of football for both sides of the ball for FSU, but Robinson stepped his game up as the third quarter rolled around.  With freshman quarterback Jacurri Brown leading a potential scoring drive, it was Robinson who flexed his muscle and veteran leadership skills on a slot blitz that sent Brown packing. In what could only be described as a truly visceral moment for the sport, Robinson spun Brown around violently and shoved him to the ground like he was a bouncer tossing a patron at Mango’s on South Beach.  Like the proverbial patron throw out of the club, Robinson threw Miami out of scoring range and led the charge in a 42-point victory with seven total tackles, a tackle for loss, and multiple plays in coverage.) He prevented two Wake Forest sideline plays from turning into scores when playing deep and pressured quarterback Sam Hartman on a second-quarter blitz (though the Deacons benefitted from a pass interference call). He played more coverage in the slot against the Wolfpack, often taking away Devin Leary's primary target, and picked off a Leary overthrow on fourth down in the second quarter.  What's next: The Florida State faithful will see Clemson in Doak Campbell Stadium on Saturday. Blowing up this past season, his first in Tallahassee after two years with South Carolina, Robinson is a sound defensive back with a near-elite skill set in every facet. Robinson can cover a variety of pass catchers with ease and closes space in zone with the best of them. There isn’t anything Robinson doesn’t do at a near-elite level.)
