2023 NFL Draft: Late Risers and Fallers Include Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Kelee Ringo, and Darnell Wright (April Fallers in the 2023 NFL Draft - Brandon Joseph, S, Notre Dame:  After starting out his career as a promising college defensive back, transfers and inconsistency have dropped Brandon Joseph’s stock. A disappointing Combine performance didn’t help, and Joseph needed a better performance at his pro day to really raise his stock.  While Joseph improved in his agilities, he ran a worse 40-yard dash. Given that his primary weakness is consistency, it didn’t do much to help his stock. Right now, Joseph ranks 159th after ranking 116th in March.) Notre Dame 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Reports (Brandon Joseph, S - Strengths: Instinctive safety with experience returning punts. Disciplined, plays within the system, and keeps the action in front of him. Displays awareness in center field, possesses above-average range, and easily changes direction. Fluid pedaling in reverse and works well with cornerbacks. Aggressive, crashes upfield, and gives effort defending the run.  Weaknesses: Inefficient and does not always take proper angles to plays. More of a flash defender in coverage than a consistent producer.  Overall: Joseph transferred to Notre Dame after a tremendous sophomore season at Northwestern in 2021, but he never capitalized. He’s an instinctive defensive back with average athleticism who is a liability over the slot receiver. I found his combine performance lacking, as he ran a 4.62-second 40 at 202 pounds and posted uninspiring results in the jumps (30 1/2-inch vertical, 9-foot-10 broad jump). His 30 7/8-inch arms did not impress, and his work on the field did not excite. He looked slow in transition and was not very fluid in his drops. From a testing perspective, there’s a chance he puts up the most lackluster numbers at the combine of any player on this list. Yet, Joseph makes this list because of how adeptly he sees the game. He’s extremely steady and rarely caught out of control. Those are great strengths to have on the back end.  It’s why I think he can be so skilled in a coverage-first role in a two-high scheme. Being good at one's job is often detrimental to interceptions totals, as it means they face fewer targets. Talk to anyone who’s coached or been around Joseph, however, and they’ll say his nine picks on only 56 targets the past two seasons are no fluke. Safeties to watch for the 2023 NFL draft (Brandon Joseph, Notre Dame:  A three-star prospect coming out of College Station High School in Texas, Brandon Joseph chose Northwestern over in-state option Texas Tech. After redshirting during the 2019 season, he stepped into the lineup for the Wildcats in 2020 and put on a show. As a redshirt freshman in 2020, Joseph recorded 46 total tackles and six interceptions. He was named a First-Team All-American, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a First-Team All-Big Ten player at the end of the year.  Last season, Joseph recorded a career-high 79 total tackles, and added three more interceptions to his resume. He was voted a Second-Team All-Big Ten player at the end of the year.  With Kyle Hamilton departing for the NFL, Joseph is stepping into the Notre Dame secondary for the season ahead.  NFL fans saw Hamilton come off the board in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft.
