2023 NFL Draft linebacker rankings: Who's behind Drew Sanders? (10. Noah Sewell, Oregon, 6-2, 246, Junior - Overview: Following the footsteps of his older brother, Sewell signed with Oregon as a celebrated five-star recruit after a brilliant prep career in the state of Utah, turning down the likes of Alabama, LSU, Ohio State and other blue-blood programs to be one of the highest-rated prospects ever to fly with the Ducks. Sewell immediately lived up to expectations, leading the Ducks in tackles in 2020 and earning the PAC-12's Defensive Freshman of the Year honors, as voted on by the league's coaches. Sewell would go on to earn first- and second-team All-Conference honors each of the next two seasons, before making the early jump to the NFL, once eligible. He leaves Oregon with 218 tackles, including 20.5 for loss and 7.5 sacks over three seasons, generating six turnovers (three forced fumbles, two interceptions, one fumble recovery). Strengths: Built from granite. Sports a power-packed frame that translates into immediate knockdown power as a tackler. Slips blocks with the brush of a hand, showing both strength and awareness of what his opponent is trying to do. Played the part of a traditional run-stuffing linebacker, but has some versatility, including rushing off the edge and showing awareness in coverage with nine passes defensed the past two seasons, including two interceptions. Excellent bloodlines. His older brother, Penei, is a star offensive lineman for Detroit Lions and uncles, Isaac Sopoaga and Richard Brown, played in the NFL. Concerns: Just average straight-line speed for the position, struggling to beat backs to the corner, at least ones with the kind of juice he’ll most often see in the NFL. Plays even slower than he times because he doesn’t trust his own eyes, hesitating while processing the action and giving up precious time and yardage. Bottom Line: Sewell is the perfect illustration of the constant evolution we’ve seen at off-ball linebacker over the past decade in the NFL. It wasn’t too long ago that a classic Mike linebacker like Sewell might generate first-round consideration. In today’s up-tempo era, however, Sewell (and others like him) are viewed as just one- or two-down specialists. In 2022, he had 457 snaps at linebacker, 85 along the defensive line, 56 in the slot, and three at cornerback.  Stat to Know: Sewell tied with Cincinnati’s Ivan Pace Jr. for the lowest missed tackle rate (2%) among the linebackers on this list.  Strengths: Sewell really shows up as a pass disruptor, whether blitzing or off the edge. He had 10 total pressures off the edge last season, and I don’t know if he can become a pure situational edge defender at the next level, but his coaches will certainly spend a few minutes at least thinking about it. Sewell’s embryonic speed-to-power stuff is certainly interesting.  If you’re a running back, and Sewell is keying on you pre-snap, you can anticipate that things will not go well for you once the play gets going. Sewell has a great blend of size and aggressive demeanor to take the wood to ballcarriers. This is true even when he misses with his first movements, and he has to recover in short spaces. Weaknesses: While Sewell can cover to a degree, he’s not the kind of linebacker who will give you great dividends up the seam. His movement skills are pretty limited in coverage, so buyer beware there. He’ll drop, go to a spot, and just stay there. This might be something he can’t overcome, and his NFL team will have to adjust accordingly. I wouldn’t want him in the slot to any serious degree, for example. Conclusion: Sewell may not have lived up to all the hype as a recruit, but he’d have to be the evolutionary Dick Butkus to do that. It’s his misfortune to a degree to hit the NFL 20-30 years after his kind of linebacker was most valued. You put him as the downhill SAM in a base 4-3, or one of the inside guys in a true 3-4, and he’d have been just fine. Sewell’s limitations in movement and coverage will have some NFL teams looking elsewhere, but if you like your linebackers big, nasty, and able to blow things up all over the front seven, you could do a lot worse.  NFL Comparison: Kyle Van Noy. There is some Dont’a Hightower to Sewell’s game as a run defender and pass-rusher close to the ball, but Sewell might be a bit more agile at the second level. Think more of Van Noy, who the Lions took in the second round of the 2014 draft out of BYU. Van Noy has never been anything to write home about in coverage, but he’s become a plus run defender and pass rusher at multiple points of the defense in which he’s played.) Ranking the top off-ball linebackers in the 2023 NFL Draft class (Tier 3 - Noah Sewell (Oregon), 6-foot-1, 246 pounds:  Sewell was one of the big winners during the NFL Combine after erasing some concerns about his assumed lack of athleticism. With adding his pro day agility numbers, Sewell scored an 8.30 RAS score, which is really good for someone that was believed to be a poor athlete.  On tape, Sewell looks stiff and clearly struggles when changing directions. He wins with his physicality and brute force. 4 draft prospects who feel overhyped (Noah Sewell, LB, Oregon:  Sewell was projected as high as a top-15 pick before the 2022 season. The Ducks LB was coming off an outstanding 2021 season where he racked up 114 total tackles, 8.5 TFLs and four PDs in 14 games. Being the little brother of Lions Pro Bowl RT Penei Sewell didn’t hurt, either.  Alas, the 2021 version of Noah Sewell was nowhere to be found in 2022. His productivity plummeted, and the game tape doesn’t hide the reasons why. From my Lions Wire draft profile on Sewell from before the NFL Scouting Combine:  Stiff lower body that really shows when Sewell is forced to change directions.  Frequently runs himself out of the play by overreacting to initial movement (see Colorado and Arizona games in ’22); more of a guesser than an instinct-driven run defender. MFalls off tackles instead of wrapping and sinking his weight; often aims too high as a tackler, especially when in pursuit.  Often a liability in coverage outside the tackle box and in man coverage; change-of-direction and body control at full speed are both below-average.  All hope is not lost for Sewell. He’s still just 20 years old and has proven to be a diligent worker and high-character player. However, the game film from 2022 is not indicative of a player who should be drafted anywhere before the 6th round for the modern NFL. Gambling some 100-150 draft slots earlier than that is not something I can justify, not even with his pedigree.) 2023 NFL Draft Risers and Fallers Throughout Season (Fallers - LB Noah Sewell, Oregon:  Going into this season, Sewell was considered the top inside linebacker prospect after a 100-tackle season in 2021. Still, in retrospect, he was judged off of one season, and he never proved he deserved the high ranking. However, this year was extremely disappointing and a complete dud for him, only getting 55 tackles.   Sewell only had that one big season, but he was so impressive his sophomore year that it was no surprise he garnered so much praise. It didn’t seem that Sewell improved any part of his game and maybe took a step back in some areas. He struggles to get off blocks, and opponents knew that because they attacked him in the run game, which derailed his entire season.  Sewell also lacks coverage ability, and in today’s NFL, that is huge because most linebackers will be in coverage for a good amount of plays. The drop-off in his play this year was so extreme that it could be very difficult for him to get drafted. It was especially startling because Oregon was still a very talented team, so you would expect to see him pick up where he left off. 2023 NFL Draft Stock - Week 8 (Up - Noah Sewell, LB, Oregon:  Sewell had a quiet start to the year, especially in the season opener against Georgia, but he was more active and around the ball taking on UCLA. In the second quarter against the Bruins, Sewell showed speed, hustling to the perimeter to help get a tackle for a loss. He later raced to the sideline to join a tackle on a wide receiver screen. Midway through the fourth quarter, Sewell had a good rush that forced an incompletion with a receiver wide open in the end zone. On the very next play, Sewell had another rush that forced UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson throw off his back foot, and the pass fluttered short into the arms of a Ducks defender for an interception in the end zone. On the next drive, Sewell made a nice tackle after coming over in zone coverage.  Sewell needed this tape as his production is down from where it was last year. Lions 2023 draft watch: 7 players, including Oregon LB Noah Sewell (Noah Sewell, LB, Oregon (redshirt sophomore):  Statistically, this Sewell is not having a great 2022 season, averaging just four tackles a game after averaging more than twice that last year. His pressures are also down, as are most other production metrics, but that comes with the territory of playing linebacker against modern-day offenses. Sewell’s athletic traits and intelligence are still very evident, but his stock may have slid a bit this season.  Lions fit: The Lions need a pure MIKE linebacker and Sewell is very much that. Rumored to be a likely first-round pick, it’s fair to wonder if he will slide after the slow start. Oregon LB Noah Sewell:  Picking one player on the Ducks’ defense from this bashing seems unfair, but no one else on this unit started the season as highly ranked as Sewell. Not only did Georgia blow the door off Oregon, but Sewell recorded only three tackles. When your leading tackler has three tackles and the opposing offense racks up over 500 yards, it’s not a good look. Sewell is supposed to be a smart linebacker and a good run-stopper, but he was relatively ineffective against Georgia. Georgia is the defending national champions and was going to be a hard matchup, but they had no resistance moving the ball downfield and that is unacceptable for a team with high expectations. There will always be growing pains when a program goes through a coaching change, but looking completely unprepared is something totally different. Oregon LB Noah Sewell:  This player is like investing your money in cryptocurrency; it sounds like a great idea, and all your friends will think you’re so cool. Still, realistically you have an extremely low probability of ever getting your money back. Sewell was one of Oregon’s top defensive players last season and has many good traits for being a productive linebacker, so it’s understandable why he is so attractive to many scouts. The issues begin with his consistency and ability to sustain the technical parts of playing his position. Sewell is a big thumping linebacker and very good against the run, but he has far too many missed tackles. He is also a liability in coverage and will no doubt be keyed on at the next level. This isn’t saying he is a bad player; he is just too unrefined to be sustainable. Having over 100 tackles and leading his team in that category will have people drooling over him, but don’t be deceived because statistics don’t tell the whole story. You need to watch to see him on every play, and you will see the negatively graded plays heavily outweigh the positive.) Early 2023 NFL Draft Linebacker Rankings: Clemson's Trenton Simpson, Oregon's Noah Sewell top the list (2. NOAH SEWELL, OREGON (JUNIOR):  The last name should look familiar and so should the outright physicality Sewell plays the game with. The Oregon linebacker is a one-man freight train at the linebacker position — taking on blocks is child’s play for the 6-foot-3, 251-pounder. He earned an 88.6 pass-rushing grade last season with 34 pressures from 98 blitzing snaps. Give him a straight line to a ball carrier, and it’s a wrap.  Nonetheless, he's still a work in progress in coverage. He only earned a 59.0 coverage grade last season and missed a lot of tackles in the open field. Those are two areas we’d like to see improved in 2022 to vault him into the first round.) Linebackers to watch for the 2023 NFL draft (Noah Sewell, Oregon:  In the 2021 NFL draft, the Detroit Lions drafted offensive lineman Penei Sewell seventh overall.  Could his younger brother Noah join him in the first round?  Noah Sewell was a five-star recruit coming out of Orem High School in Orem, Utah. Over the course of his high school career he was a standout on both sides of the football, racking up over 2,000 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns as a running back, and adding another 224 total  tackles and five interceptions as a linebacker. He was named the Utah Valley Football Player of the Year after his senior season. Sewell was also the first consensus five-star recruit out of the state of Utah since Naloti Ngata.  He enrolled at Oregon, and immediately stepped into the starting lineup. In seven games during the 2020 season, he recorded 48 total tackles, along with 6.5 tackles for a loss and a pair of interceptions. Sewell was named the Pac-12 Defensive Freshman of the Year for his work.  This past season, Sewell played in 14 games for the Ducks, registering 114 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss, 4 sacks and an interception. He also broke up five passes while in coverage. For his efforts, Sewell was named a First-Team All-Pac-12 selection.  He is a high-effort player, who works through the whistle on every snap.
