2023 NFL Draft Week Rumors Thursday (One player who has gone under-hyped during the 2023 NFL Draft process is Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Many teams use a color-based grade scale, with Blue signifying an elite starter, Red/Warm marking a good starter, Red indicating a solid starter, and below that are backup quality players. The 2023 NFL Draft is not especially strong, and Gibbs is one of the few players who received a blue grade. Multiple team sources feel Gibbs could be an Alvin Kamara- or Jamaal Charles-type running back in the NFL. The other consensus blue players in the 2023 NFL Draft are Bijan Robinson, Will Anderson, Tyree Wilson and Jalen Carter. Some teams gave blue grades to Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Devon Witherspoon. Some teams, meanwhile, did not have Anderson and Wilson with blue grades and had them as red/warm.  With Gibbs being one of the only consensus blue prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft, in all likelihood he is going to go much higher than expected tonight. Team sources told WalterFootball.com that they think Gibbs could go as a top-20 selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. Along with being an ultra-fast running back, Gibbs is a phenomenal receiving weapon who can be used out of the slot like Kamara. Gibbs also can serve as a kick returner. He is tough, strong, fast, and has great character on and off the field. There are a lot of teams that are interested in Gibbs. While he might be a surprise top-20 pick to the media and fans, it won't be a surprise to teams if Gibbs goes that high.) 2023 NFL Draft: Best research stats from notable prospects ((Devon) Witherspoon Island  - Illinois' Devon Witherspoon should intrigue any team looking to line up a cornerback on an island. He may have gone viral for his aggressive tackling, but it is his coverage ability that should get his named called on during Thursday's first round. According to PFF, Witherspoon allowed fewer yards per target (2.5) in man coverage than any other Power 5 cornerback (minimum 25 targets), while playing second-most man coverage snaps of any FBS player in 2022. Witherspoon allowed one-yard on 106 press coverage snaps. He also put a padlock on the end zone and did not allow a touchdown in any coverage all season.) The Lions have already overhauled their secondary. More help is coming this week (With three or as many as four quarterbacks expected to go in the top five, plus at least one edge rusher and perhaps two, the Lions seem almost certain of having a shot to draft any quarterback it likes best, whether that’s Devon Witherspoon or Christian Gonzalez. Witherspoon is a former Illinois star who needs no introduction to Lions fans at this point. As one of the top prospects at one of the team’s biggest needs, Witherspoon has separated as the most-mocked player to Detroit, including sweeping the picks here at MLive. Pop in the film sometime, and you’ll see why. He smothered opposing receivers with the best coverage of any draft-eligible player in the country, according to ProFootballFocus. On balls thrown his way, he actually got his hands on more of them (17) than the intended targets (16). And he did it while playing in a predominantly man-coverage scheme, which is also the preferred coverage scheme in, you guessed it, Detroit.  I could go on, but I don’t have to. You can’t throw a rock these days without hitting a mock draft that thinks the Lions are taking Witherspoon at No. 6. But the decision isn’t as settled as you might think. Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez is also a top-10 prospect, and he just so happens to be taller, longer and faster than Witherspoon. Tall, long and fast is a pretty good combination for a cornerback, and any team prioritizing traits in its draft decision will prefer him over Witherspoon. At 6-foot-2, that guy burned the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds. He also has inside-out versatility, experience in man as well as zone schemes, and is still just 20 years old. 2023 NFL Draft Week Rumors Wednesday (For a lot of the draft process, the consensus top-three cornerback prospects were Illinois' Devon Witherspoon, Oregon's Christian Gonzalez and Penn State's Joey Porter Jr. However, there are teams that differ from that after finishing off their organizational draft meetings. Some franchises have Mississippi State cornerback Emmanuel Forbes as the third corner behind Witherspoon and Gonzalez. Witherspoon is cemented as the top corner with Gonzalez a lock behind him, but some teams feel Forbes is a better player than Porter. While Forbes is skinny, he is extremely fast and possesses phenomenal ball skills and excellent instincts. Some teams that need corner help will pass on Porter because he is viewed as a press-man only corner and not a good fit for teams that like to play zone or off-man coverage. Hence, don't be shocked if Forbes goes ahead of Porter tomorrow night. The consensus has been to project the Washington Commanders to take a cornerback in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, which is definitely a strong possibility. Washington loves Illinois' Devon Witherspoon, but knows he will be long gone. Oregon's Christian Gonzalez could also be gone by pick No. 16, but if he makes it there, the Commanders could easily end the fall. 2023 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions 1st round wishlist (Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois:  The most commonly discussed cornerback for the Lions is right here. Devon Witherspoon from Illinois is the favorite to be the 6th overall pick and much of that is due to his physicality and connection to Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph. I will say that Witherspoon is a bit of an outlier at the position for 181 pounds, but there have been some comparisons to Denzel Ward.  There are plenty of instances on tape where Witherspoon flies upfield and makes devastating hits. Meanwhile, he leaves college with 25 pass deflections and five interceptions for his career. There’s plenty to like with his ball skills and physical presence on the perimeter.  I’d be fine with either cornerback at the 6th overall pick as I think it’s the Lions’ biggest need right now. Burning Questions Facing Lions Ahead of 2023 NFL Draft (However, I'm not in Holmes' shoes, and I believe the organization will go in another direction with the pick because of the above reasons.  As of April 20, my prediction is that the Lions will take either Oregon's Christian Gonzalez or Illinois' Devon Witherspoon with the pick, and will ultimately opt for the defensive back whom Holmes & Co. have rated higher on their draft board. In my opinion, that's Witherspoon.  By taking Witherspoon, Detroit would not only be finding a high-level replacement for Jeff Okudah, but it'd also – and more importantly – be solidifying its defensive backs room as a strength. It'd be a terrific change of pace for a Lions secondary that has been abused by opposing passing games for far too long.  Once again, Witherspoon wouldn't be my pick with the Lions' first selection of the 2023 draft. 5 thoughts about what will and won't happen for the Detroit Lions in the 2023 NFL draft (Best guess at No. 6: Devon Witherspoon - Illinois Devon Witherspoon has been my standard answer when I’m asked what I expect the Lions are going to do at No. 6. Not one thing the Lions have said or done since the Scouting Combine almost two months ago has changed that.  The team remains perilously thin at cornerback beyond the coming season. Only newcomer Cam Sutton and third-year Jerry Jacobs are under contractual control beyond 2023. It’s a critically important position in Aaron Glenn’s defense; don’t forget for one second that Glenn was a great NFL cornerback and understands the impact one can have on the entire defense.  Then factor in how perfect of a schematic fit Witherspoon is for the Lions. No NFL team plays more press-man coverage than Detroit on the outside. Witherspoon has over 800 snaps of playing press-man coverage in college, and played it very well in a defense noted for developing defensive backs well (see: Kerby Joseph). It should be a seamless transition into the Detroit starting lineup for a player with a very high football IQ, proven production in college and the “kneecap biting” mentality effectively tattooed to his athletically gifted body. If that doesn’t scream “Detroit Lions” under Dan Campbell, nothing does.  It might not be the most popular choice amongst fans. I don’t think the Lions care about that one iota. 2023 NFL Draft: Pro comparisons and analytical team fits for top cornerback prospects (Devon Witherspoon (PRO COMPARISON: Jaire Alexander):  Computer vision shows that Witherspoon's change-of-direction speed ranks in the top 10 percent of all DB prospects in my 10-year sample, which means he is elite at not slowing down when tracking balls and running to meet would-be pass catchers. This aligns with the sparkling figures Pro Football Focus attributed to the consensus All-American last season, including the lowest FBS passer rating allowed in coverage (25.3) and PFF's highest coverage grade (92.5). Witherspoon's tracked field movement and ability to find angles that allow him to stop passes are similar to those of Alexander, who, according to PFF, has given up just 12 touchdowns as the primary defender in his five NFL seasons. Witherspoon tied for the second-highest forced incompletion rate in the Power Five last season -- 29.0 percent, per PFF -- and was one of just six corners in the Power Five to record at least three interceptions without allowing a touchdown.  TEAM FIT: Detroit Lions.  In the wake of Detroit's trade of Jeff Okudah to Atlanta, the Lions' defense earns the biggest uptick in win share when the No. 6 overall pick is used on Witherspoon. Frankly, a LOT of teams would hugely benefit from the addition of this Illinois cover man (SEE: Chicago, Las Vegas and Minnesota, among many others), but Detroit gave up the second-most passing yards per play last season (7.5) and ranked 30th on third down. 2023 NFL Draft cornerback rankings: Christian Gonzalez the best of a talented group (2. Devon Witherspoon, Illinois, 6-0, 181, Senior - Overview: Unlike the vast majority of the cornerbacks on this list, Witherspoon signed with Illinois amid very little fanfare, slipping through the online recruiting databases following a high-school career focusing mostly on basketball. The Illini were his only Power Five offer and he didn’t join the team until midway through the fall camp. Nevertheless, once Witherspoon committed to football, the Pensacola native’s athleticism and competitiveness were unleashed and he wasted little time blasting past whatever expectations there may have been for him, becoming the only true freshman to start a game for the Illini in 2019. He started three contests (playing in all 13) and recording 33 tackles, including two passes defensed.   Witherspoon would go on to start all 29 of the games in which he was healthy over the next three seasons, ranking among the Big Ten’s leaders with nine passes broken up in 2021 before taking his game to another stratosphere in 2022, when he was named the conference’s Defensive Back of the Year and a consensus All-American with 17 passes defensed, ranking second in the Big Ten and sixth in the nation.  Strengths: A tenacious competitor who sticks in the hip pocket of receivers downfield and seems to relish his opportunities to prove he is more physical than his frame suggests against the run as well, Witherspoon may have been named the Big Ten’s Defensive Back of the Year simply because no one was willing to argue with him about it. In all seriousness, he plays the role of agitator beautifully, corralling receivers at the mesh point with long arms and easy acceleration off either foot, mirroring their movements and clouding their view of the ball at the critical moment with long arms and excellent hand-eye coordination to deflect passes. Witherspoon is the rare cornerback who might be even better as a tackler than he is in coverage. He is a heat-seeking missile who craves contact, attacking in run support and as a blitzer.  Concerns: Witherspoon eased some concerns about his straight-line speed with 4.4s at his Pro Day, but that doesn’t change his tape, which shows a grabby, gambling defender called for penalties six times in 2022, according to Pro Football Focus. He was flanked by a terrific pass rush and two NFL-caliber safeties, allowing plenty of opportunities to jump routes. Witherspoon plays with zero regard for his own safety and, while that can be a good thing, he has a relatively spindly frame and missed three games over the 2020-21 seasons due to injuries.  Bottom Line: Witherspoon probably ranks as one of the favorite players in this class for a lot of scouts, as few can match his ferocity as a competitor. Witherspoon was the best player on the best defense in football last year. 2023 NFL Draft Rankings: Sam Monson’s top 20 cornerbacks, including Joey Porter Jr. at No. 2 (THE BEST - 1. Devon Witherspoon, Illinois:  One prospect stands well above the rest when you work through the tape. And the numbers back it up for Devon Witherspoon, who allowed just a 25.3 passer rating into his coverage in 2022, more than 10 points lower than if opposing quarterbacks threw the ball into the turf on every play.  His ability to be ahead of the play is remarkable and jumps out relative to other prospects. What Are Devon Witherspoon’s 4 Best NFL Team Fits? (DETROIT LIONS - A Swiss-cheese secondary prevented the Lions from reaching their ceiling in 2022. The Lions allowed a 30th-ranked 245.8 passing yards per game. General manager Brad Holmes has spent a large portion of his offseason resources addressing the defensive backfield.  The Lions have added the likes of Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Emmanuel Moseley, and Cameron Sutton to their secondary, but a bit more is required at cornerback. Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois (Height: 5′ 11½” (54th) Weight: 181 (10th), Wingspan: 73⅝” (18th), Arm Length: 31¼” (42nd), Hand Size: 8⅞” (25th)) - Bio: Witherspoon was the 2018 Pensacola (Florida) Defensive Player of the Year out of Pine Forest High School, a feat cinched by his seven interceptions in his senior year. He had 329 snaps in 2019 as a true freshman for Illinois, showing impressive maturity in coverage and run support, and he’s been a factor ever since.  Over four seasons, he had two sacks, six total pressures, 118 tackles, 46 stops, and he allowed 88 catches on 172 targets for 1,168, yards, 492 yards after the catch, five touchdowns, five interceptions, 22 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 70.6. Witherspoon had 1,968 college snaps at outside cornerback, 229 in the slot, 69 along the defensive line, 56 in the box, and 12 at free safety.  Stat to Know: Witherspoon picked the right year to put it all together at an utterly ridiculous level — in 2022, he allowed just 22 catches on 62 targets for 209 yards, 71 yards after the catch, no touchdowns, three interceptions, 14 pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 25.3. That was by far the lowest passer rating allowed for any FCS cornerback in the 2023 class — Tulsa’s Jaise Oliver finished second at 37.4.  Strengths: Any cornerback is going to be tested deep, especially when he gets to the NFL level. Quarterbacks testing Witherspoon deep might want to have a Plan B, because his combination of backpedal, transitional movement, and balletic footwork make such completions quite difficult.  Witherspoon allowed an opponent quarterback rating of 0.0 on deep passes in 2022. Yes, he went Full Blutarsky.  But it’s when Witherspoon is defending short and intermediate passes that you really see the unusual footwork for his size. He has what I call “match feet,” which allow him to trail receivers through any bend and angle, and then just snuff things out at the catch point.  Witherspoon’s NFL team will love his alpha playing personality — whether he’s tracking a receiver or stopping the run, he goes all-out to the ball, and he’s bis and aggressive enough to make those hits stick.  Weaknesses: That aggression does come with a potential price — Witherspoon was penalized six times in the 2022 season, but NFL officials (such as they are) may find that his proclivity for nearness to the receiver when the ball shows up lands on the wrong side of pass interference more often than one would prefer. He’s going to have to time those hits and breakups microscopically at the next level.  There aren’t a lot of massive dings in his game, but Witherspoon can get beaten by savvier receivers on angular routes right when those routes start to turn. His grabby demeanor might be an adaptive strategy; it’ll certainly bear watching for his NFL coaches.  Conclusion: Illinois has become an underrated “DBU” over the last couple of years. Two of the Fighting Illinis’ safeties in this class (Sydney Brown and Jartavius Martin) made out top 9 list there, and 2022 graduate Kerby Joseph, a third-round pick by the Lions, picked Aaron Rodgers off three times in his rookie season. With all that said, Witherspoon comes out of the gate with the most obvious NFL skill set of all these players, and his blend of size, aggressiveness, and transition speed should make him a plus starter at the next level as soon as possible.  NFL Comparison: Sam Madison. Selected by the Dolphins in the second round of the 1997 draft out of Louisville, Madison transcended any concerns about his size (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) with great movement skills and the toughness to take any receiver right to the woodshed. You want grit? Witherspoon is grit on steroids. You want ball skills? He’s one of the best in the class at getting his hands on the football. How about confidence? He’ll be the first to tell you that he’s the best corner in the draft, and he might be right.  Witherspoon’s ability to knock the Sonic rings out of you is something to marvel at, especially at his size. He’s delivered plenty of massive hits, and he’s not afraid to do the dirty work in the run game either.  In man coverage, Witherspoon is a total nuisance, does well to stay in the hip pocket of his receiver, and consistently gives himself a chance to make a play on the ball. In zone, he has great instincts and elite click-and-close ability but is prone to getting a little over-aggressive at times.  The one thing that concerns me with Witherspoon is his frame. At 181 pounds, he’s in the 10th percentile of weight among all cornerbacks that have tested since 1999—you might not have guessed it from the way he throws his body around on tape.  How he fits: Put him anywhere in the secondary and he will succeed. Entering the combine, NFL Network draft analysts Bucky Brooks and Daniel Jeremiah both had the same prospect sitting atop a deep cornerback class: Illinois' Devon Witherspoon. Unfortunately, the consensus All-American wasn't able to display his physical attributes during Friday's cornerback workout at Lucas Oil Stadium.  As initially reported by NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, Witherspoon was flagged for a hamstring issue during his medical evaluation Thursday in Indianapolis.  "He underwent an MRI," Pelissero reported Friday morning.
