6 NFL draft prospects who are sliding down big boards (and could be massive bargains) (1.  Trenton Simpson:  This year’s crop of off-ball linebackers is an undervalued asset. At the top are three players capable of putting up a decade-long career as upper crust starters. Despite that, there’s a chance none wind up selected on Day 1.  Simpson is vying with Iowa’s Jack Campbell and Arkansas’ Drew Sanders to be the first man up among that group (Alabama/Tennessee vet Henry To’oto’o could also fit the bill). Campbell is an absolute monster who looked great at the combine. Sanders brings extra value as a blitzer (9.5 sacks last season). But Simpson’s’ skillset makes him the most interesting man at the position.  Simpson has, to put it bluntly, absolutely stupid speed and power. While his instincts at the snap can put him in disadvantageous situations, his ability to close gaps and sling ballcarriers backward more than makes up for it. In his Clemson career he’s lined up both in the box and over the slot, and while he’s likely going to be stuck in the former as a pro he’s got the experience and traits to run with receivers and tight ends over the middle.  He’s a work in progress despite starting two of his three years as a Tiger. He’s going to get washed away by complex blocking schemes early in his career as he learns to identify new plays. But he’s got the chops to make up for his early mistakes and the raw talent to be an All-Pro once he’s got the confidence and recognition to run whole hog at every play from the moment the ball is snapped.) NFL Draft: Seven bold observations about 2023 class (We should be worried about Trenton Simpson in coverage - A sleek, hyper-athletic, excels-in-space linebacker with lofty first-round hype. We've seen the type before. Recently. Devin Bush in 2019. Isaiah Simmons, Kenneth Murray, Patrick Queen, and Jordyn Brooks in 2020. And Quay Walker and Devin Lloyd last year. 2023 NFL Draft linebacker rankings: Who's behind Drew Sanders? (2. Trenton Simpson, Clemson, 6-2, 235, Redshirt Junior - Overview: After initially committing to Auburn, Simpson ultimately elected to stay closer to home, with the Charlotte, NC. native signing with Clemson as a four-star recruit and the top-rated prospect overall that year from his state. Along with fellow 2023 NFL prospects Bryan Bresee and Myles Murphy, Simpson was part of a celebrated 2020 recruiting class at Clemson, earning even more buzz when he emerged as a part-time starter and significant contributor as a true freshman, logging 32 tackles, including 6.5 for loss and four sacks over 12 games (three starts). Simpson would go on to start 25 games over the next two seasons before opting to give up his remaining eligibility, leaving the Tigers with 165 stops, including 23 for loss and 13 sacks over three seasons. He was named a Butkus semifinalist and earned third-team All-ACC honors in 2022.  Strengths: Simpson has a muscled-bound, coiled-up frame and is every bit as athletic as he looks, changing directions and accelerating like a much smaller man, as evidenced by his cornerback-like 4.43 second time in the 40-yard dash. Beats backs to edge and can carry them downfield in coverage with ease. He pairs his speed with an utter disregard for his own or opponents safety, sparking big collisions. Simpson is a virtual bumper car of a tackler, generating an explosive burst to and through contact that knocks ballcarriers to the turf. He's described as a "Yes, sir, No, ma'am" type off the field.  Concerns: Not the sum of his parts — at least not yet. Just average diagnostic skills, taking a half-beat longer than other linebackers on this list to process the action. Unreliable radar in his pursuit angles, too often failing to account for traffic and getting caught up in the wash. Trenton Simpson, Clemson (Height: 6′ 2⅛” (68th percentile), Weight: 235 (33rd),, 40-Yard Dash: 4.43 (97th), 10-Yard Split: 1.55 (85th), Bench Press: 25 reps (75th), Arm Length: 32⅜” (52nd), Hand Size: 10¼” (90th)) - Bio: A running back and linebacker at Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, Simpson was named the North Carolina High School Football Player of the Year in 2019, and he was ranked the 13st-best prospect in the nation by 247 Sports. Over three seasons with the Tigers, Simpson had 12 sacks, 64 total pressures, 119 tackles, 79 stops, and he allowed 50 catches on 73 targets for 406 yards, 319 yards after the catch, three touchdowns, no interceptions, two pass breakups, and an opponent passer rating of 96.0. In the 2022 season, Simpson had 404 snaps at linebacker, 129 along the defensive line, 88 in the slot, and one at cornerback.  Stat to Know: Simpson allowed the lowest Deserved Catch Rate (50%) and yards per target (2.6) of any linebacker in this draft class.  Strengths: When it comes to pure range, Simpson puts up tape that most linebackers can’t touch. You do not expect a 6-foot-3, 235-pound ‘backer to align at a cornerback position and bomb out the top of a wide trips right formation, but Simpson has multiple examples of doing just that.  That said, we should not downplay Simpson’s power in the run game — whether from the edge or off-ball, he’ll sift through blocks and zoom into the backfield for some major stops.  And as a pass-rusher, Simpson can act as a LEO off the line, blitz with relative impunity, or just run-and-chase the quarterback from a spy position.  Weaknesses: When he’s in the slot as a pass defender, Simpson shows a need for more development. He’s not always quick to the draw for his own assignments, and this can have him struggling to catch up when receptions are made. He’s better off right over his coverage target in situations where he can bump receivers and tight ends off their marks.  As is the case for most lighter linebackers in the modern era, Simpson is better off reading gaps like a running back to get to the ball. Taking on guards and centers who outweigh him by 100 pounds is not always an optimal strategy. NConclusion: It should come as no surprise that Simpson is from the same program that produced Isaiah Simmons — Clemson obviously has a lot of bandwidth for linebackers who play all over the defense, and do so successfully for the most part. As was the case for Simmons when he was selected eighth overall in the 2020 draft by the Arizona Cardinals, the challenge for his NFL coaches (which is still in place for Simmons and the Cardinals) will be to understand which parts of that amazing versatility transfers to the NFL, and which stuff is best left on the cutting room floor. Simmons projects best as an off-ball wrecker who can blitz off the edge, and can cover in certain (mostly man) concepts.  NFL Comparison: Dre Greenlaw. The 49ers stole Greenlaw out of Arkansas in the fifth round of the 2019 draft, and while coverage has never been his thing, Greenlaw has become one half of the NFL’s best linebacker duo alongside Fred Warner. There are also elements of Tampa Bay’s Devin White in Simpson’s play style in his ability to disrupt the passer from everywhere, but Simpson has more potential in coverage.) Who Will Be 1st LB Taken In 2023 NFL Draft? (DON’T FORGET ABOUT: TRENTON SIMPSON - Simpson entered the 2022 college football season as the consensus top-ranked linebacker. Simpson was electric throughout his tenure at Death Valley, having recorded 165 tackles, 23.0 tackles for loss, and 13.0 quarterback takedowns. A dynamic defender in space, Simpson is “today’s linebacker” who possesses the athletic traits necessary to counteract modern-day offensive approaches. Simpson isn’t a talent that should be pigeonholed by traditionalists, however, and that makes his draft stock difficult to figure out. Simpson must be afforded the freedom to impact the game in a variety of ways at the next level. Explosiveness and length allowed Simpson to be deployed as a hybrid rusher, overhang defender in zone coverage, third-level safety, and as a traditional EDGE defender at Clemson.  Simpson isn’t a one-size-fits-all prospect. Arizona’s initial difficulties to implement Isaiah Simmons into their scheme is an example of the challenges posed. 2023 NFL Draft: Prospects who underperformed in 2022 (LB TRENTON SIMPSON, CLEMSON (59) (2022 PFF Grade: 68.7 (622 snaps)):  For most of the draft process, Simpson was considered the top linebacker prospect in the class, as he has pretty much all the traits one could ask for in a modern NFL linebacker. He has ideal size (6-foot-3 and 230 pounds) and is athletic enough to cover slot receivers. He presents a lot of versatility as well, as he lined up as an off-ball linebacker 404 times, at the line of scrimmage on 129 snaps and in the slot 88 times. His 2021 season was his first as a full-time starter, and he really delivered, putting up a 73.2 overall grade to go along with 31 QB pressures, seven of which resulted in sacks. Expectations were high for Simpson to build on that performance in 2022, but he never did. All of Simpson’s grades declined in 2022 except his run-defense grade, which improved from 65.2 to 70.3. Trenton Simpson isn’t immune to that. While he’s had a solid 2022 campaign, he hasn’t been quite as productive as he was with current Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables calling the Clemson defense.  Nevertheless, draft evaluation is ultimately a projection of the traits, and in the right role, Simpson has the tools to be a phenomenally dynamic and diverse defender, especially in a modern NFL that values versatility in second-level players.  To play devil’s advocate, Simpson isn’t a perfect prospect. His recognition, especially on option plays, can be a tad late at times. And after watching him take on blocks head-on more often this year, play strength is a notable concern.  At 6’3”, 225 pounds, Simpson has good size and length. He wins as a pass rusher — something he’s not asked to do often in 2022 — almost exclusively with speed. Linebackers to watch for the 2023 NFL draft (Trenton Simpson, Clemson:  Depending on which scouting service you subscribe to, Trenton Simpson was either a four- or a five-star prospect coming out of Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. ESPN graded him as a four-star prospect, and the third-best prospect in the state of North Carolina, while 247Sports rated him as a five-star recruit and the top player in the state, as well as the top outside linebacker in the 2020 recruiting class.  Simpson passed on offers from Charlotte, Duke, Colorado State, Florida, North Carolina and a host of other schools to commit to Auburn. But he flipped his commitment later in the cycle to enroll at Clemson.  He was an immediate contributor in 2020 as a true freshman, playing in 12 games and making three starts. That season he registered 28 total tackles, four sacks, and 6.5 tackles for a loss.  This past season, he played in all 13 of Clemson’s games, making 12 starts. He set career-high marks in total tackles (65), tackles for a loss (12.5) and sacks (6.5).  Simpson is the son of Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy D. Simpson, who served 17 overseas tours from 1994 through 2021 as a member of the United States Army Rangers.)
