2023 NFL Draft Week Rumors Thursday (Late in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, a team that could go a lot of different directions are the New Orleans Saints. Even though they took Chris Olave in Round 1 last year, they could consider wide receiver again if a good fell to them at No. 29. They also will have to think hard about line talent on both sides of the ball. From speaking with sources, it sounds like the Saints would like to add some size to their defensive front. New Orleans seems to really like Clemson defensive end Myles Murphy but believes he won't get to No. 29. Overall though, the Saints would consider a variety of options and might go with the best player available regardless of position.) 6 NFL draft prospects who are sliding down big boards (and could be massive bargains) (3. DE Myles Murphy: Clemson has not one, but two defensive studs who entered 2022 as potential top 10 draft picks but now may slide to Day 2. Bryan Bresee’s stock slid thanks to the anonymous nature of defensive tackle stats and some just-OK combine numbers. Murphy, despite 18.5 career sacks and a pro-ready frame, has quietly slipped thanks in part to skipping workouts at the combine. But Murphy showed up for Clemson’s pro day and proved he’s got all the chops to be a consistent performer at the next level. He dusted off a 4.53-second 40 at 268 pounds and looks every bit like an elite athlete among defensive ends/linebackers. This backs up what we’ve seen over the last three years. Murphy may not have best-in-class acceleration, but he’s got a Ferrari engine and enough gas to drive it around the world. This guy does. Not. Stop. Murphy’s spot on big boards has slid from fourth place to 17th, which suggests some team in the middle of Round 1 is going to pick up a stud. He could stand to add moves to his repertoire, but he’s still going to win on passing downs by being massive, strong and fast. 2023 NFL Draft: Jon Macri's favorite prospects from the class (EDGE MYLES MURPHY, CLEMSON (Big board rank: 17, PFF projection: First round, I would draft: Top-10): Murphy’s prototypical size and elite athleticism pop on tape during some of his high-end wins, which screams potential as an every-down starter in the NFL. He didn’t earn the best pass-rush metrics or production in college with just an 80.6 career pass-rush grade and 20 sacks over three seasons, but it’s not difficult to see how he could translate to the NFL with more refinement. His explosiveness off the line and ability to transfer speed to power is one of the best in this class and while developing more consistency to his game, which for the higher-end athletes typically takes a bit more time, he could be unstoppable. Murphy isn’t just a pass-rush threat, adding important evidence that he can be an excellent run defender as well, which really makes his case of being worthy of a top-10 pick. 2023 NFL draft: Interior defensive line still among top needs for Detroit Lions (It’s not a blank slate after those two, though, with Clemson’s Myles Murphy, Georgia’s Nolan Smith and Iowa’s Lukas Van Ness looking like Day 1 locks. Murphy comes from the Travon Walker athletic and physical build. The highly-touted recruit posted three productive seasons for Clemson. NFL Draft: Seven bold observations about 2023 class (Myles Murphy should be drafted in Round 2 - Traits and measurables matter. I get it. They're often more important than production, particularly in the first round. And Murphy is nearly 6-feet-5 and 268 pounds with arms a shade under 34 inches. He tested well at his pro day. Freaky, amazingly good? Not exactly. Even if I could be convinced Murphy is a first-round caliber athlete with first-round size, his productivity in college drastically falls short of conventional Round 1 standards. After the light appeared to turn on late in 2021, it never seemed to be re-lit. In 2022, Murphy was actually less efficient as a pass-rusher generating pressure than he was the previous season (9.5% vs. 12.6%). Myles Murphy, Clemson (Height: 6′ 4⅝” (70th percentile), Weight: 268 (60th), Bench Press: 25 reps (65th), Arm Length: 33¾” (57th), Hand Size: 8½” (0)) - Bio: Murphy came out of Hillgrove High School in Marietta, Georgia as ESPN’s No. 3 player in the nation, the No. 2 defensive end, and the No. 1 player in the state of Georgia. He was a consensus Freshman All-American, and kept the pace throughout his collegiate career. Over three seasons with the Tigers, Murphy totaled 20 sacks, 10 quarterback hits, 66 quarterback hurries, five batted passes, 63 tackles, 64 stops, and six forced fumbles. He had 1,244 snaps outside the tackles, 180 over the tackles, 117 in the B-gaps, and five in the A-gaps. Stat to Know: Murphy’s Broken and Missed Tackles Percentage Rate of 5% last season was the lowest among all edge-rushers in the 2023 class. Strengths: Murphy has excellent speed to the pocket for a player his size; there’s nothing “hybrid” about how well he accelerates when he’s working the arc, and he has the strength and technique to go through multiple blockers to get home. The Tigers didn’t have Murphy inside the tackles a lot, but I think he can be a credible inside/outside guy at the next level. He presents a nice bull-rush to displace interior offensive linemen, with a good finishing kick to the quarterback. And as a run defender, Murphy’s speed and strength are pretty much NFL-transferable right now. Just plug him in and go. Weaknesses: Power is the base of Murphy’s game, but he’ll need to get lower more frequently to maximize it — he loses leverage too often when he shouldn’t because he comes off the snap high. Murphy is also limited in his technical repertoire — if he can’t get you with the bull-rush or the long-arm, there aren’t a lot of counters and adaptive strategies to use for him to recover if he doesn’t get home on the first try. Conclusion: Murphy’s instant NFL success will be dependent on which set of schemes he’s in. I think he’ll have a rough go of it for a while as a four-down edge defender. But in the NFL’s increasing use of five-man fronts, he could be beneficial right away as both a big end and a strong-side pass-rusher in sub-fronts. He has enough on the ball to be somewhat productive early on, with the potential for far more if he can get his arms around the refinements that make people at his position truly great. NFL Comparison: Rashan Gary. The Packers took Gary with the 12th pick in the 2019 draft out of Michigan despite the fact that his pass-rush repertoire was pretty basic at the time (bull-rush and long-arm). They bet on his upside as a bigger guy who could do damage from multiple gaps, and that took hold in Gary’s second, third, and fourth seasons. 2023 NFL Draft edge rusher prospect rankings, scouting reports: Will Anderson leads deep group (4. Myles Murphy, Clemson, 6-5, 268, Junior - Overview: Murphy signed with Clemson as one of the most celebrated prospects in the country back in 2019, ranking as a consensus five-star recruit out of Marietta, Georgia. He lived up to the hype immediately, registering a team-high seven tackles, including three for loss and two sacks against Wake Forest in his college football debut, finishing his first season with 51 stops overall, including a team-high 12 for loss, along with four sacks and three forced fumbles. He would go on to post similar numbers the next two seasons, leaving Clemson with a three-year total of 139 tackles, including 37 for loss, 17.5 sacks and six forced fumbles, earning all-conference honors each season. Areas of Strength: Murphy is pro-ready out of the box. He sports a prototypical build with long arms (33 ¾") and powerful, well-distributed musculature. Generates impressive initial quickness out of his stance for a man of his size and does a nice job of coordinating his hands and feet, including on long-arm rushes outside, where Murphy's speed and power combination essentially shear off the edge. Murphy doesn't have to go around offensive tackles; he can go through them, showing very good upper-body strength (25 reps at the Combine) and leg drive for bull rushing, as well. One of the best parts of Murphy's game is his toughness and competitiveness in the running game. He stacks blockers at the line and shows good lateral agility, balance, core strength and good, old-fashioned hustle to string the play wide. Murphy pursues hard down the line and shows good hand-eye coordination and savvy to poke the ball free when he catches unsuspecting ball carriers, forcing six fumbles over his career. Areas of Concern: More smooth than sudden off the ball, lacking the elite twitch of some of the smaller rushers on this list. Further, Murphy has some core stiffness, lacking the bend of top edge rushers and needing a step or two to downshift when changing direction to track a moving target. As such, he while often disruptive, Murphy is not quite the finisher that his traits (and production) suggest, sometimes lunging at ball carriers and missing tackle opportunities. Bottom Line: Murphy may lack some of the flash of others on this list, but he's very safe and his consistent production against elite competition speaks for itself. Murphy is very much a love/hate prospect depending on which scout you speak with. The evaluators who love him feel he is fast, strong, athletic, and has a ton of untapped potential. Those who don't like him said they think he could be "Clelin Ferrell 2.0" and feel he lacks intensity and plays too soft. They worry Murphy could continue a line of disappointing Clemson edge rushers that includes the likes of Ferrell, Kevin Dodd, Vic Beasley, Shaq Lawson, DaQuan Bowers and the late Gaines Adams. He’s a similar caliber of athlete to Travon Walker from a season ago, and Walker was drafted No. 1 overall based on his scintillating athletic profile alone. 2023 NFL Draft Week 8 Prospect Pack: Eli Ricks a Late but Legitimate Entry to CB Class (Matthew Bergeron, Myles Murphy Square Off in Anticipated Showdown: Of the Week 8 2023 NFL Draft prospect battles highlighted ahead of this past Saturday, this was the matchup that stood out most. We all know about Myles Murphy — a 6’5″, 275-pound ball of energy with unending violence in his game and torrid movement speed for his size. Murphy entered the season as an early first-round prospect, and nothing has changed in that regard. But fewer people know about Matthew Bergeron — the tackle he lined up against for a large portion of his snaps. Bergeron absolutely looks the part at 6’5″, 327 pounds, and he’s quietly been very good again for Syracuse this year. The Orange offensive tackle has some early-round hype in the scouting community, but Saturday’s matchup against a top-tier 2023 NFL Draft prospect was his chance to truly prove himself as a starting-caliber talent. It was never going to be perfect for Bergeron against an overwhelming mix of traits like Murphy’s, and we did see a few lapses. Interestingly, those lapses came in large part on the first drive and on the very last one, but not as much in between. Early on, Bergeron allowed a sack from Murphy, who used a long-arm on Bergeron’s outside shoulder, then pried inside with his strength and ruthless motor. But more often than not after that, Bergeron held his own in both phases. Bergeron is a high-energy mover at his size, with excellent corrective athleticism in pass protection. More than once, he managed to hold Murphy at bay with quick feet, balance, tight hands, and play strength. Notably, Bergeron showed off the grip strength to maintain his anchor against violent clubs from Murphy — a feat not all tackles would be able to boast. Bergeron’s strength is even more awe-inspiring when you see how he snaps into place off the line. He not only has the athleticism to match to the apex and seal off outside rushes, but he can go from idle to active much quicker than most blockers, and there’s a definite twitch in his motion that’s uncanny for his size. His mobility and explosiveness show up as a run blocker as well, where Bergeron traverses space with ease. At times, Bergeron did get grabby, and at times, too wide with his hands. Murphy’s power is elite, and especially when he was able to torque inside Bergeron’s torso and drive his hips through, the latter struggled to limit movement. Murphy also took advantage of Bergeron’s energetic, frenetic movement, baiting him outside and then countering inside. There were also moments where Bergeron extended before matching with his feet and fell a step behind. There are still things for Bergeron to clean up even now, but considering his opposition, he showed enough to warrant excitement in Week 8. This matchup absolutely lived up to the hype. While Bergeron wasn’t perfect, he proved perhaps the most important thing: That he had the raw physical traits to match up with Murphy and challenge him. In an OT class that’s still settling, Bergeron has the tools to be an early-round pick and a future starter for NFL teams. At the very least, he showed that on Saturday.)
