Analyzing the matchups that could define the NFL in Week 9 (Jared Goff vs. Packers’ stunts - The first edition of Lions-Packers in 2024 pits two of the best teams in the NFL against one another with divisional standings at stake. Both teams are quite good in multiple departments — and possess arguably two of the best offensive minds in football — but the Packers may differentiate themselves based on their defensive structure.  In his first year as Green Bay’s defensive coordinator, Jeff Hafley has made stunts a staple. The Packers rank third in plays with a stunt and have allowed the ninth-lowest passer rating in football when adding pressure with twists or misdirection. Altogether, Green Bay’s defense ranks fourth in EPA per play when utilizing a stunt.   On the other end of the line of scrimmage, Jared Goff hasn’t been marvelous when his offensive line has navigated rushers from different angles. Goff’s 59.4 PFF passing grade against stunts ranks 19th among qualifying quarterbacks, including a 5.7% turnover-worthy play rate (11th highest). Every NFC North intra-divisional contest feels like a true war, and the Lions attained early answers by handling the blitzes of Brian Flores and the Vikings. NFL QB Index, Week 9: Matthew Stafford vaults into top 10; Dak Prescott, Aaron Rodgers plummet (5. Jared Goff - 2024 stats: 7 games | 74.1 pct | 1,695 pass yds | 9.0 ypa | 13 pass TD | 4 INT | 18 rush yds | 0 rush TD | 4 fumbles.  The NFL's hottest quarterback had one of the strangest days you'll see from an upper-tier signal-caller in Week 8. He was under a ton of duress when taking intermediate and deep pass drops, but because the Lions forced turnovers in Tennessee territory and enjoyed an outrageously productive day from their return units, Goff rarely needed to cover much ground through the air. His three touchdown passes all came from inside Tennessee's 10-yard line, and he finished with 85 yards passing. If nothing else, Goff remained efficient, capitalizing on great scoring opportunities. Biggest need for each NFL team ahead of Week 9 (Lions: Edge rusher.  Marcus Davenport, Derrick Barnes, Aidan Hutchinson and John Cominsky are on injured reserve. The Lions have invested a second-round pick in Josh Paschal, who was inactive last week, and need him to rise to the occasion. James Houston and Isaiah Thomas, the latter of whom was recently signed off the Bengals practice squad, are the other notable names at that spot. NFL Week 9 bold predictions: Flacco, Colts stun Vikings (Packers ball-hawking defense slows down en fuego Lions offense for upset victory - The top spot in the NFC North is up for grabs in Week 9 with the 6-1 Detroit Lions squaring off against the 6-2 Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Detroit is a two-and-a-half-point road favorite, and this will be decided by what their top-ranked scoring offense (33.4 points per game) can accomplish against a Packers defense that leads the league in takeaways (19), which is one more than Green Bay had all of 2023.  The Lions are on a five-game winning streak, and they are producing 38.4 points per game during the streak, which is the Lions' most in a five-game span within a season since 1952, per CBS Sports Research. Detroit is also the only team on record since at least 1940 to have more touchdowns (25) than incompletions (20) in a five-game span within a season, per CBS Sports Research.   Lions three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Jared Goff has been historic during this streak. That last statistic gives you an idea, but I'll paint the picture: his 83% completion percentage and 146.5 passer rating are both the most in a five-game span in NFL history, minimum 100 passing attempts, a stretch that also includes Goff accounting for 13 total touchdowns (12 passing and one receiving) and only one interception. That's outstanding.  New Green Bay defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley's scheme and free agency addition safety Xavier McKinney have been exactly what the other needed as he has come away with more interceptions (six, the most in the NFL) and recorded more passes defended (seven) than the amount (five) as the nearest defender in coverage this season. McKinney's six interceptions are the most in a player's first eight games with a team since safety Darren Sharper joined the New Orleans Saints in 2009 and had seven in his first eight games. That season, Sharper finished with a league-leading nine interceptions, and the Saints won their franchise's only Super Bowl title. Quarterbacks have been throwing deep against him at their own peril: five of his six interceptions are on deep passes -- throws of 20 or more air yards, per NFL Pro Insights. Goff may not have the deep ball available to him in Week 9 with speed demon Jameson Williams suspended for two games for a violation of the NFL's performance-enhancing substances (PES) policy.
