NFL Week 10 Preview: Schedule, storylines and matchups to watch (Detroit Lions (-3.5) vs. Houston Texans - Storyline of the game: C.J. Stroud may get firepower back just in time.  With injuries to their top-two receivers, the Texans have been left hamstrung in the passing game in recent weeks. That deficiency came to a head this past week: the Texans fell to the Jets with only two receivers registering a catch at the position. With Nico Collins potentially slated to return to the lineup this week, Stroud may get back perhaps the game’s best receiver — touting a 92.4 PFF receiving grade this season.  The Lions may be the most complete team in the NFL this season, and there’s no better example than that of the performances Jared Goff has amassed. Over their past two games, Goff has managed to secure a quality 74.5 passing grade despite totaling just 230 passing yards, generating under 150 through the air in each game. Generally, the expectation is that if your quarterback was held that low in yardage, it might be a bad day for your offense. That’s not the case for Ben Johnson and Detroit.  Matchups to watch: Texans LG Kendrick Green vs. Lions DI Alim McNeill - The issues in pass pro on the interior of this Texans offensive line were on full display in primetime this past week, with three interior lineman producing sub-23.0 PFF pass-blocking grades. The worst among them was Kendrick Green — who came in in-relief of Kenyon Green, who suffered an injury that may sideline him into the future — earning just a 0.4 pass-blocking grade.   If Green isn’t able to take strides this week, it will be a long day matched up with Alim McNeill. The Lions defensive tackle has really stepped up in the absence of Aidan Hutchinson. Stroud has faced increasing pressure in recent weeks, largely due to struggles along the interior offensive line. Texans guards and centers have combined for a 52.1 pass-blocking grade, the sixth-lowest in the league, and their 13 sacks allowed leads all teams. Without Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions' interior pass rush has stepped up, with Alim McNeill and Levi Onwuzurike both ranking in the top 15 at their position in pressures. The Lions’ 69 total pressures by interior defenders are tied for third in the NFL.  Jahmyr Gibbs has excelled in the Lions’ zone-heavy run scheme, leading all running backs with 6.9 yards per carry and seven rushing touchdowns on zone runs in 2024. NFL QB Index, Week 10: Justin Herbert resurgent; Jordan Love, C.J. Stroud slide out of top 10 (5. Jared Goff (2024 stats: 8 games | 74.9 pct | 1,840 pass yds | 8.7 ypa | 14 pass TD | 4 INT | 16 rush yds | 0 rush TD | 4 fumbles):  Goff was afforded time to throw for most of the afternoon at Lambeau Field and emerged as the quarterback better equipped to deal with the wet conditions. As he's been throughout his red-hot run, Goff was highly accurate, going without an incompletion until an overload blitz forced him to throw a pass away inside the final two minutes of the first half. Goff was predictably sharp over the middle of the field and demonstrated the value of his rapport with Amon-Ra St. Brown by delivering a beautiful back-shoulder throw to the receiver for a TD on fourth-and-goal. While he didn't throw for a gaudy yardage total, Goff was efficient and avoided crushing mistakes. Super Bowl picks: Lions, Chiefs among seven NFL teams predicted to win Lombardi Trophy in February (1. Detroit Lions - 9 votes · +450.  Michael Baca: Lions over Chiefs. Just like he did in Detroit's Week 1 win over the defending champions last season, Dan Campbell goes into his bag of tricks to produce multiple fourth-down conversions and an O-lineman TD, ruining the Chiefs' quest for a three-peat.  Brooke Cersosimo: Lions over Chiefs. It is tough to pick against Patrick Mahomes in the Chiefs dynasty era. But Dan Campbell is right, the Lions are “built to win, man.” Jared Goff doesn’t let another Super Bowl win escape him, and pure euphoria breaks out everywhere outside of Kansas City.  Jeffri Chadiha: Lions over Bills. Detroit’s explosive offense is too much for Buffalo to handle as Jared Goff wins a shootout against Josh Allen.  Eric Edholm: Lions over Bills. My preseason pick looks half great and half LOL. Let’s take the great half and bump it up to amazing, as the Lions outlast everyone and win their first Super Bowl. I don’t think the Bills are the AFC’s best team, but I could see Josh Allen getting white hot in January.  Grant Gordon: Lions over Chiefs. Once more to the Super Bowl go the Chiefs, but a historic three-peat is not to be had. History belongs, at long last to the Lions, who will claim their first NFL title since 1957 as they appear in their first Super Bowl and go ahead and win it all. From Bobby Layne to Jared Goff, at long last, the Lions are atop the NFL world once more.  Marcas Grant: Lions over Ravens. Jared Goff, a solid running game and a suffocating defense stop Lamar Jackson to set off Detroit’s biggest celebration since B-Rabbit beat Papa Doc at The Shelter.   Matt Okada: Lions over Ravens. This is easy, as I’m sticking to my preseason pick. Lamar Jackson finally leads Baltimore to the Super Bowl but falls to America’s New Team, the Detroit Lions.  Nick Shook: Lions over Ravens. Detroit finally reaches the big game, where it meets its greatest challenge in Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. With an efficient offense and complementary play from all units leading the way, the Lions cap a magical turnaround by winning a back-and-forth thriller in the Big Easy.  Lance Zierlein: Lions over Ravens. 10 teams best positioned to make a Super Bowl run (1. Detroit Lions - In my book, the Lions are in a tier by themselves in the NFC. At 7-1, they are in current position to claim the No. 1 seed in the conference and the first-round bye that comes with it. They are on a six-game winning streak, which includes key road wins against the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers that have them on the inside track of winning the NFC North. That creates a clear path through Ford Field to the Super Bowl if they hold this position.  While the offense is arguably the most efficient in the league and has few holes, the defense is the big question surrounding their chances at making a run, particularly after losing star pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson for the year. NFL contenders, pretenders: Which teams are real deal? (Contender - Detroit Lions (7-1):  If it's not the Chiefs, the Lions are the best team in the NFL. Jared Goff has completed 82.8% of his passes with a 140.1 passer rating over this six-game win streak, while Amon-Ra St. Brown has caught 30 straight targets. Then there's David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, who make up the best running back duo in the NFL. This defense is certainly not the most formidable unit in the league, but the offense can outscore anyone.
