Week 9 takeaways: We answered big questions and sized up every single matchup (Lions - Does the victory put the Lions in the driver's seat in the NFC? Yes, Detroit has been dominant to this point in the season. The reigning NFC North champions have now beaten both of the top teams of their division, at Minnesota in Week 7 and now at Green Bay. And they've proven they can still string together victories in the midst of adversity. They played without wide receiver Jameson Williams, who was serving the second of his two-game suspension, and Pro Bowl edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who underwent surgery on his left leg following the Week 6 win at Dallas.  Early prediction for next week: Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown will score a receiving touchdown for the seventh straight game in Houston. Against the Packers, St. Brown tied Detroit's franchise mark, shared by Herman Moore (1994) and Leon Hart (1951), with a receiving touchdown in six consecutive games. He had seven catches for 56 yards and the touchdown.  Most surprising performance: The Lions defense. Although Detroit lost safety Brian Branch to a second-quarter ejection from a helmet-to-helmet hit, the defense allowed just one touchdown late in the fourth quarter. What We Learned from Week 9 Sunday games (Kevin Patra's takeaways: 1.  Lions sprint out to big lead, roll over Packers at Lambeau. Chants of "Jared Goff" echoed through Lambeau Field late in the contest as Detroit took a firm grip of the NFC North. Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur eschewed a fourth down, kicking a short field goal after a good opening drive. The Lions matched the march, but Dan Campbell went for it on fourth down. Goff connected with Amon-Ra St. Brown to give Detroit a lead it would never relinquish. The Lions scored touchdowns on two fourth-down calls, underscoring Campbell's aggressive attitude. The Lions played the cleaner game on a rain-soaked evening in Green Bay. The offense put up three long drives and, with a big second-half lead, didn't have to do much late. Goff peppered the short game in the rain and avoided the catastrophic mistakes. The QB completed his first 11 passes of the game, highlighting his continued efficiency. The Lions leaned on David Montgomery (17 carries for 73 yards) and Jahmyr Gibbs (11/65/1) to spearhead the offense. It says a ton about Campbell's squad that it got outgained by 150 yards and went 4 of 12 on third down, and yet the game was never really in question in the second half. The Lions continued to prove they can win any type of game – even outdoors in bad weather. 2.  Packers' mistakes prove costly in big division loss. Green Bay moved the ball seemingly at will but continually shot itself in the foot. Brutal penalties, at least six drops, a missed field goal, poor short yardage blocking. You name it, the Packers committed it Sunday. The rotten cherry on top of the terrible-tasting sundae was a Jordan Love panic pick-six at the end of the second quarter, giving Detroit a double-digit lead. The brutal decision allowed the Lions to blow the game wide open with another TD after halftime. Detroit scored 24 unanswered points over the second and third quarters. The self-inflicted errors included 10 penalties. Love and the offense churned out 411 yards of offense but were poor on key downs, including going 3 of 12 on third downs and 1 of 4 in the red zone. Love has immense talent, but his mistakes are glaring. He's now thrown an interception in each of his first seven starts in 2024, joining Irv Comp (1944) as the only Packers to have an INT in each of a player's first seven games of a season, per NFL Research.  3. Kerby does it again. Lions safety Kerby Joseph continues to make big plays. In the waning moments of the second quarter, clinging to a seven-point lead, Joseph swiped Love's pitiful pass and raced 27 yards to the end zone. Like he has many times this season, the play was a game-changer by the ball-magnet. A close game became a laugher. It marked Joseph's sixth INT this season, tied for the most in the NFL (Packers' Xavier McKinney). It was also his 14th career INT, tied for the most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2022 (DaRon Bland). Since 2000, only Hall of Famer Ed Reed (16) has more interceptions among safeties in their first 40 games. With a banged-up defensive front and the Lions losing Brian Branch early (ejection), Joseph helped spearhead a secondary that might give up yards but stands tall in big moments. Next Gen Stats Insight for Lions-Packers (via NFL Pro): Alim McNeill generated a team-high five pressures on 33 pass rushes, translating to a 15.3% pressure rate. No other Lion had more than two QB pressures. NFL Research: The Lions have started 7-1 or better for the first time in the Super Bowl era. NFL Week 9 Recap: Who’s Up, Who’s Down, What’s Next for Every Team (Lions 24, Packers 14 - My take: Detroit (7–1) is making its move to get free and clear in the race for the NFC’s top seed. The Lions pounded Green Bay (6–3) at Lambeau Field, with the key play being Kerby Joseph’s 27-yard pick-six with 32 seconds remaining in the first half to go up 17–3. With the rain pounding down, the Packers never threatened to make it competitive in the second half, and now sit 1.5 games back in the NFC North with a rematch against Detroit looming on Dec. 5. However, with the Lions having handled the initial meeting, they’re in prime position to win the division and potentially earn homefield advantage for the first time in franchise history.  Stock up: Although it came in defeat, Jayden Reed had another terrific game. The Packers’ wideout caught five passes for 113 yards, giving him 620 yards on the season. Coming into the season, many believed Green Bay had a load of good receivers but no true top threat. Reed has emerged as such.  Stock down: Love was iffy all week with a groin injury. However, he played and proceeded to play middling football in a game requiring a better effort. Love threw the aforementioned tide-turning interception, the second time this year he’s thrown a horrific pick-six (the first coming against the Rams). Lions are NFC's best team, and what else we're learning in Week 9 (Lions: It's official: The Lions are the best team in the NFC and could very well be the best team in the league. It's funny, for a team playing in its first outdoor game of the season, Detroit certainly didn't seem to have any trouble dealing with the downpour on Sunday. Quarterback Jared Goff once again posted an insane completion percentage, despite the weather, and the Lions showed they're fully capable of moving the ball on the ground with both David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. Perhaps most impressive is that the defense was able to withstand the ejection of Brian Branch for a helmet-to-helmet hit and multiple injuries. NFL Winners and Losers: Jim Harbaugh is already working his magic with the Chargers (Detroit Lions, inevitable division champs: The NFC North is the best division in football. That’s what makes the Lions’ lead in it so impressive.  The Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings are Detroit’s two contenders for the division crown — the Chicago Bears are proving they’re not ready yet — and the Lions have road wins over both of them. The Lions smacked the Packers in a 24-14 win. At Lambeau Field, they thoroughly outplayed a very good Packers team in a rainstorm. They're 7-1 after that win.  The Lions should cruise now to a division title. They look like the best team in the NFC. The bigger debate might be if they’re the best team in the entire NFL.):

Grades:

CBS Grades (Lions Grade - B+.  For the first time all season, the Lions had to play a game outdoors and they had to do in a torrential downpour, and not even that could slow them down. This looked like it was going to be a tight game going into halftime, but then Kerby Joseph blew things open with a pick six in the final minute of the half that put Detroit up 17-3. The Lions high-flying offense did slow down some in the rain, but Jared Goff was still efficient (18 of 22 for 145 yards) and the one-two punch of David Montgomery (73 yards) and Jahmyr Gibbs (65 yards and a TD) kept things moving for the offense.
