Why your NFL team won, lost in Week 10 (Detroit Lions 23, Houston Texans 20 - Why the Lions won: The Lions defense showed up when it needed to. The Detroit offense wasn’t moving the chains well, and Jared Goff couldn’t stop throwing interceptions, but the Lions’ pass rush got after C.J. Stroud, pressuring him 22 times and sacking him four times. Alim McNeill, Levi Onwuzurike and Josh Paschal combined for 13 pressures, providing a heck of an interior push at times.  Why the Texans lost: Goff struggled, throwing a career-high five interceptions, but he escaped the game without being sacked. The Texans' pass rush, which has impressed this season, had just 10 total pressures in the game and failed to bring Goff down as Will Anderson Jr. was sidelined. That extra wrinkle could have been pivotal.):  https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-why-your-nfl-team-won-lost-in-week-10

NFL Week 10 takeaways: Five things to like and dislike (Five things we liked - 3. Lions don't abandon the run.  The Lions' win over the Texans on Sunday night was an eyesore. Jared Goff threw five interceptions. Over the last 30 years, quarterbacks who throw five picks in a game are now 3-58.  The defense is a huge reason they aren't 2-59. Houston didn't score a point in the second half. Oh yeah, and Jake Bates nailed multiple field goals from 50+ yards, including the game winner from 52, in the final 5:01 of the game.  But don't forget to give some credit to the running game, or, more importantly, the Lions' willingness to stick with the run game. This season, teams that trail by 10+ at halftime pass the ball on 68% of their second-half plays. The Lions, however, ran the ball on 59% of their second-half plays Sunday, the second-highest rate by a team trailing by double digits at halftime this season. The only one higher came in Week 4, when the Cardinals simply wanted to leave an eventual 42-14 loss to the Commanders without it getting worse.  Overall, the second-half run game wasn't that effective -- just 4.3 yards per carry -- but it did provide four plays of 10+ yards and a touchdown. More importantly, the Lions didn't stray too far from what they do. So often, we see trailing play callers chase comebacks by going pass-heavy. Instead, Detroit stayed patient. Of course, not every team is going to get such a sterling second half from its defense, but this was a good reminder the run game still exists, even when you're trailing.):  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-week-10-takeaways-five-things-to-like-dislike-including-an-under-the-radar-star-qb-and-a-struggling-one/

2024 NFL MVP race, odds: Jackson favored; Goff, Mahomes fall (Jared Goff - The media seems to really like Goff, or perhaps it’s his awesome story of redemption — kicked to the curb by the Rams, and then gets to within 3 points of a Super Bowl with the "lowly Lions".   Goff may not be a top-3 player for the Lions, but if Detroit wins 12 to 13 games, he’ll certainly be in the discussion.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2024-25-nfl-odds-mvp-favorites

Schrager's Cheat Sheet: Jake Bates' improbable rise from brick salesman to star kicker (Lions' Magical 2024 - The Lions aren't supposed to win games like Sunday night's miracle 26-23 victory over the Houston Texans. Jared Goff threw five interceptions.   The team trailed by 16 points at the half on the road.  Their kicker from the United Football League nailed two field goals from more than 50 yards in the final stanza.   But they did. And sometimes, it's just one of those years.  The Lions used to lose those games. The stats from Sunday's win are mind-boggling. It's the largest comeback win for Detroit in 10 years. The Lions were just the second team in NFL history to throw five interceptions in a game and be able to erase a 15-point deficit. Goff was just the fourth quarterback in NFL history to throw five interceptions on the road and win a game. One of the others was a guy named Frankie Sinkwich, and that was in 1944.   The interceptions were the story of the first half, and the comeback was spectacular. But Jake Bates has become a bona fide weapon as well. Bates hit his first game-winning field goal of his career on Sunday, but it came alongside a wild, 58-yard game-tying make minutes earlier. Bates's story is pretty emblematic of this Lions team as a whole. Overlooked, considered done a few years ago, and now cracking skulls — he may as well be the face of the 2024 team. Bates took the long road. In December, while the rest of the NFL was watching the Chiefs play the Raiders in Arrowhead, Bates signed a professional football contract ... with the Michigan Panthers of the United Football League. He, then, went on to dominate in that league. With multiple 60-plus yard field goals, NFL scouts were watching. In June, he signed a contract with the Lions. And when Badgley went down, Bates won the competition. It was a long shot, without the crazy college factoids. In fact, Bates was one of only two UFL players to make an NFL 53-man roster, out of 77 who participated in the NFL's 2024 preseason.  After his game-winner against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 6, Bates said the following: "I was working as a brick salesman in Houston. I thought the dream was dead. ... I thought football was done, so I had to move on and do something else with my life. Luckily, the Lord had something else in store."Bates belongs on the Lions. Scrappy, headstrong, and able to persevere. After Sunday's ridiculous win, Goff told reporters: "Every team gets punched in the mouth, and the good ones respond."   The Lions are more than merely good.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/schragers-cheat-sheet-jake-bates-lions

QB Stock Market Week 11: Russell Wilson, Mike Tomlin proving everyone wrong (9. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions:  Even when you're the picture of good health, you can get a stomach bug.  Even when you're the NFL's most efficient pocket passer, you can throw five interceptions in a game, apparently.  But that's what I think this was: a momentary lapse that's not a symptom of something more serious. Don't get me wrong, the Texans have a great defense. DeMeco Ryans has his ways of messing with quarterbacks. But you could see Goff getting his act together in the second half and, by next week, we will all have likely forgotten that any of this happened.  Afterward, Goff spun the dumpster-fire performance like it was a lesson learned.   "Hey, if that ain't a [expletive] lesson [that] it ain't over till it's over, that's f---ing what it is, boys," Goff said in the locker room. "Way to f---ing fight all day. We're [expletive] different. We're [expletive] different than all 31 (teams) in this league. Alright? Way to [expletive] go."  Love me a little quarterback propaganda.):  https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/qb-stock-market-week-11-russell-wilson-mike-tomlin-proving-everyone-wrong
