2024 NFL midseason report: Every team's best player, biggest surprise (Detroit Lions - Highest-graded player: Edge Aidan Hutchinson (94.9).  The impact that Hutchinson made in the Lions’ first five games can’t be overstated. Despite not playing in three weeks, his 45 pressures are still fourth, and his 95.0 pass-rushing grade is still the best in the NFL.  Biggest surprise: S Kerby Joseph - The Lions were anticipated to have one of the deeper secondaries in the NFL, and the unlikely Joseph has blossomed to make it a dominant unit at safety. His 90.7 overall grade is 34 points higher than his 2023 mark, plus leads the position. Evaluating the danger level of the current 2024 NFL playoff field (1. Detroit Lions (7-1) - Danger Level: Extremely high.  The Lions are pretty comfortably a top-two team in football, and you could argue that they’re No. 1. Detroit is the highest-graded overall team (92.2) and is top-six in both offensive and defensive EPA per play.  The Lions offense has overcome its slight early-season lull to become a train barreling down the tracks. Nobody has run the ball better than Detroit, which ranks first in rushing EPA per play and fields two elite backs in David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. The team’s passing attack has hit its stride, with Jared Goff ranking 11th in passing grade since Week 6. Detroit has weapons inside and out with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams returning from suspension and Sam LaPorta, plus maybe the best coordinator in the NFL via Ben Johnson.  On the other side, Aaron Glenn’s defense received a strong elevation with the team’s trade for Za’Darius Smith to replace Aidan Hutchinson for the rest of 2024; Smith joins a defensive line that ranks tied for second in pass-rushing grade. The back end of the Lions defense has become a no-fly zone, with Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch, the two highest-graded safeties in the NFL.  Fundamentally, Detroit doesn’t have many glaring weaknesses. NFL playoff predictions: Picking 8 division winners, 6 wild-card teams at midpoint of 2024 season (NFC NORTH CHAMPS - 1. Detroit Lions - UNANIMOUS PICK.  The Lions are the best team in the NFL's best division, building a comfortable lead in the North (though Dan Campbell certainly wouldn't categorize it as such) in part by beating the Vikings and Packers on their own turfs. They are the only team in the league to rank top five in scoring offense and defense, blowing away the field in point differential per game (13.8 -- nearly four points better than second-placed Buffalo). With half a season to play, the Packers and Vikings (and Bears, technically) are still in play for the division title. The Lions are firmly in the Super Bowl mix, and the loss of Aidan Hutchinson had the potential to be a game-changer once they get deep in the playoffs, which is where they appear to be headed. Prisco's midseason NFL All-Pro team: Lamar leads way (Right tackle Penei Sewell, Lions - He has taken the throne of best right tackle in the game from Lane Johnson of the Eagles, but it's still close. Sewell is big, athletic and can move. He can also show off his power in the run game. Edge Aidan Hutchinson, Lions, T.J. Watt, Steelers - Hutchinson is hurt and done for the season, but he earned his right to be on this team. He was major disrupter before his injury ended his season after five games. In those five games, he had 7 1/2 sacks and was on his way to being the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year. Watt continues to be a star pass rusher who can totally change a game. Sack, fumble, game over is his way.  Safety
Xavier McKinney, Packers.  Brian Branch, Lions .  McKinney has proven to be one of the best free agent signings as he is tied for the league lead with six interceptions. He's been a stable force for the Packers' back end. Branch has moved to safety and developed a knack for being all over the field. He played nickel last season, but the move to safety was the right one and it's paid off.  Punter

Lions acquire DE Za'Darius Smith - Acquired: Smith, 2026 seventh-round pick.  Traded: 2025 fifth-round pick, 2026 sixth-round pick.  This one was widely expected, but it also makes a ton of sense. Detroit is a legitimate Super Bowl hopeful, but losing Aidan Hutchinson to injury necessitated an addition off the edge. Smith is a prototypical plug-and-play rental, still offering quality pressures at 32, with 20.5 sacks over the last two and a half seasons. Ranking 8 most impactful deals of the 2024 NFL trade deadline (4. Za'Darius Smith to the Lions - There's no replacing Aidan Hutchinson, but the Lions had to figure out a way to get some more pass-rush production. Smith now heads to his third NFC North team and should be immediately productive given all the help he'll get along that Detroit defensive front. The unsung heroes of this Lions defense right now are Alim McNeil and D.J. Reader, who aren't getting the gaudy stats but are making their presence felt up front. They're eating up blockers and were able to help isolate favorable matchups for Hutchinson when he was in there. They should be able to do that for Smith now. Coupled with the best safety tandem and a fluid scheme under defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, Detroit can get even more aggressive defensively. NFL Fact or Fiction: Chiefs Will Finish the Regular Season 17–0 (The Lions will have a cakewalk to Super Bowl LIX - Manzano’s view: Fiction.  The Lions have earned the right to be viewed as the heavy favorite in the NFC and the best team in football. They’re the No. 1 team on Conor Orr’s power rankings because they checked many boxes in the first half of the season.  Detroit has an offensive juggernaut and a physical defense that just acquired edge rusher Za’Darius Smith to help with the loss of Aidan Hutchinson, who sustained a season-ending leg injury last month.  The smart money is on the Lions (7–1) facing the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. But these two teams aren’t on a fast track to meeting in New Orleans in February.   There are too many strong teams in the NFC to say the Lions will have a cakewalk to the Super Bowl. This isn’t the AFC where you’re trying to convince yourself the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills can beat the Chiefs.  It wouldn’t be surprising if the Lions lose to one of their NFC North rivals, such as the Minnesota Vikings or Green Bay Packers. Yes, they’re 2–0 against those teams, but don’t overlook familiarity. These teams all know each other well, making any potential playoff meeting a coin flip.  Perhaps the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams both find a way into the postseason. The NFC West teams have Super Bowl experience with two of the best coaches in the NFL. No one will want to see Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, Cooper Kupp and Kyren Williams if Los Angeles finds a way into the playoffs. 2024 NFL Trade Deadline Winners and Losers (Winners - Grit.  If you’re Dan Campbell and your top pass rusher goes down, the tired reaction would be to implore your general manager to scour the NFL for a high-ceiling player who can fill the void left behind by Aidan Hutchinson. The wired reaction would be to win a bunch of big games anyway and then trade for Za’Darius Smith, who has a clear motivation to destroy his two most recent former clubs before the Cleveland Browns, which happen to be two of Detroit’s division rivals. Smith said the Packers made him “feel like a nobody” after he was injured. He also wasn’t happy with his deal with the Minnesota Vikings, either. NFL trade deadline winners and losers: While Chiefs and Lions bolster Super Bowl hopes, Cowboys sacrifice only their future (Lions defensive backs - From Brian Branch to Kerby Joseph and beyond, the Lions field a homegrown, talented young corps of secondary players. But any NFL defensive coordinator will tell you how the pass rush and coverage units work in tandem. After the Lions lost star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson to surgery-requiring tibia and fibula fractures, that defense missed a core anchor in its pressure. Detroit would and should intimidate defensively even without the acquisition of Za’Darius Smith, who arrived Tuesday from the Cleveland Browns along with a 2026 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2025 fifth and a 2026 sixth.  But the Lions are in a clear Super Bowl window they should not leave to chance, and Smith drastically upgrades their edge. His 26 active pressures this season top the next-closest Lions edge rusher by 17 (though respect for your nine, Joshua Paschal). Week 9 NFL MVP Rankings: Lamar Jackson Overtakes Josh Allen (5. Jared Goff, QB, Lions - Once again, Detroit didn’t need a ton from Goff to get the job done. He finished with 145 yards and one passing touchdown in a 24-14 win over the Green Bay Packers. Goff’s interception-less streak is up to five games while the Lions (7–1) have won six in a row. His passing efficiency — with the help of a stout defense and strong running game — have spurred that streak as Detroit is off to its best start since 1956. Goff leads the NFL in completion percentage (74.4) and he’s second in passer rating and yards per attempt (8.7), steering a Super Bowl-caliber offense to the best record in the NFC. The Detroit Lions are playing great complementary football right now, with their offense, defense, and special teams all ranking as top-10 units. The Lions made a trade before the deadline to add Za’Darius Smith following the injury to Aidan Hutchinson. That should help address their biggest area of need, as they rank 25th in sack rate this year.  The Lions have been excellent on third downs and inside the red zone, ranking first and fourth, respectively. Being strong in both of those areas has helped them to limit opponents to just 1.59 points per drive, which ranks sixth. Detroit Lions - Starting five: LT Taylor Decker, LG Graham Glasgow, C Frank Ragnow, RG Kevin Zeitler, RT Penei Sewell. All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell spearheads Detroit’s dominant offensive line. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has figured out how to weaponize the former first-round pick in the run game, getting him into space and letting him go to work. Sewell even received a lateral on a hook-and-ladder play against the Cowboys in Week 6.  Frank Ragnow might be the NFL’s best center now that Jason Kelce is retired. He missed one game with a pectoral injury but returned to offer his usual standout play in Week 6. Jared Goff has myriad offensive weapons to work with, but the Lions’ offensive line is their weekly identity.
