Week 10 questions, takeaways: Chiefs stay undefeated, 49ers back on track (Lions - Is there reason for concern after Jared Goff's 5 INT performance? It was a rough night at the office for Goff with a career-high five interceptions. Entering the game, Goff had four interceptions on the season and hadn't thrown one since Week 3, while attempting 114 passes between picks. Against Houston, though, Goff faced heavy pressure, particularly in the first half. Although Goff struggled, he shouldn't have any issue with getting back on track next week at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Most surprising performance: Jake Bates. In a return to his home state, the Lions kicker nailed a game-winning 52-yard field goal in dramatic fashion. Bates also had a 58-yard field goal to tie the game with 5:01 remaining. NFL Week 10: What We Learned from each Sunday game (Lions 26 Texans 23 - Grant Gordon's takeaways:  1. Goff throws five INTs before rallying Lions in wild one. A wonder of exactitude who had gone without an interception since Week 3, Jared Goff has four games this season with four or fewer incompletions. On Sunday night, though, he was just plain awful for the majority of the game, tossing his share of balls into the turf and throwing a career-worst five interceptions. Then he just went ahead and exemplified Detroit’s mettle, helping the Lions to a ridiculous rally. Trailing, 23-7, in the third with four INTs by that point, Goff and the Lions’ comeback began with a David Montgomery touchdown run to cut the score to 23-13. However, Goff threw his fifth interception on the ensuing Detroit drive and it seemed as though the Lions were destined for an ugly loss. It wasn’t to be, though. The embattled QB went 4 of 5 on the drive that followed, culminating with a touchdown toss to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Kicker Jake Bates concluded the next two Lions drives with field goals, including a 52-yard game-winner to come away the hero. However, it was Goff’s resilience that kept Detroit going. Not since Matt Ryan with the Atlanta Falcons in Week 11 of 2012 had a QB won a start in which he threw five picks, per NFL Research. That changed in stunning fashion Sunday night for Goff and the Lions.  2. Stroud, Texans offense go silent in second half. Houston entered Sunday banged up on both sides of the ball, but the Texans defense stood tall in the first half and the offense produced 23 points. However, quarterback C.J. Stroud and Co. didn’t touch the scoreboard in the second half. The closest they came was a missed Ka'imi Fairbairn 58-yard field goal with fewer than two minutes to go in the game. Considering they were without Will Anderson, Nico Collins and Stefon Diggs, Houston coming up short against a red-hot Detroit squad doesn’t seem all that bad on paper. But the Texans had this one and they let it fall from their grasp on a day in which the defense forced five turnovers. Stroud threw two picks himself and was an ugly 5-of-13 passing for 68 yards in the second half. With Collins likely on the way back soon, there is promise ahead, but the porous play of the offensive line remains a massive concern. For a team trying to take the big step toward becoming a Super Bowl contender, this is a loss that will -- and should -- hurt. It might’ve been an upset had it won, but this was one Houston had and let get away.  3. Davis-led Detroit D rebounds in second half. Jared Goff did his defense no favors with his five picks, but Carlton Davis did his best to even the score. Davis recorded two interceptions, both coming in a second-half shutout. In a game that got downright silly, Goff threw his last two picks on drives immediately after Davis picked off Stroud. Never mind that, the Lions defense stood strong in the second half and, for the game, held Houston to 248 yards of offense and a miniscule 56 yards on the ground. Davis had the highlights, but in a game in which nothing much was pretty, Detroit got notable contributions from Brian Branch, Jack Campbell, Alim McNeill and many others to garner a hard-hitting triumph.  Next Gen Stats Insight for Lions-Texans (via NFL Pro): Texans defensive end Danielle Hunter entered Week 10 with an NFL-best 54 QB pressures. Despite playing without Houston DE Will Anderson, Hunter still posted a game-high eight QB pressures and a 33.3 pressure rate. NFL Research: Jared Goff (five) and C.J. Stroud (two) combined to throw seven interceptions. It was the most combined INTs in an NFL game since Rams-Bears in Week 14, 2018. Week 10 NFL Takeaways: Steelers Living Up to Franchise Standards (Detroit Lions - There are lots of great things you can say about Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions right now—and I’ve got one you probably haven’t heard. And that one is good on him for sticking with his defensive coordinator, Aaron Glenn, back in 2022.  It’s easy to forget now, but at the end of that October, it felt like all of Michigan was calling for his head. The Lions had gone 3-13-1 in Campbell’s first season, and Glenn had fielded the second-worst scoring defense, and a unit that was ranked 29th in total defense. Things didn’t get much better to kick off 2022—the Lions were 1–6 and allowing more than 32 points per game as November approached. Folks wanted their pound of flesh for it.   But Campbell stayed true to Glenn, who’d come over from New Orleans with him and who, almost by design, had been dealt a tough hand to play early in their time in Detroit. See, Campbell and Brad Holmes were left more in the way of a foundation, particularly along the line, on offense than they had been on defense. So it was always going to be easier, and correct, to build up the offense first, which is what the Lions wound up doing.  They drafted Penei Sewell No. 7, dug Amon-Ra St. Brown out of the fourth round, traded for Jared Goff and got competitive on that side relatively quickly. Meanwhile, building up the defense was simply a slower burn, and Glenn had to be pinata taking the hits for it their first two years.  Since then, the story has changed, and Sunday’s movie of a win in Houston showed just how far Glenn’s unit has come. Coming out of halftime, a taped interview Campbell gave to NBC’s Melissa Stark aired, and on it Campbell said his defense needed to create more turnovers. As the sound played over the first live game action of the second half, veteran corner Carlton Davis jumped in front of Houston’s Tank Dell to pick off C.J. Stroud.  Davis picked off Stroud again later in the third, as Houston drove into Detroit territory, the Lions created two three-and-outs after the break, and the defense stiffened up one final time to force Houston to trot out Ka’imi Fairbairn for a 58-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, which Fairbairn wound up missing.  With a revamped roster, and after a couple of years of drafting guys such as Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, Brian Branch and Terrion Arnold, those things are possible now.  So good on Campbell for understanding why when they weren’t.):  https://www.si.com/nfl/week-10-nfl-takeaways-steelers-mike-tomlin-standards

NFL Week 10 Recap: Who’s Up, Who’s Down, What’s Next for Every Team (Lions 26, Texans 23 - My take: Detroit (8–1) had no business winning Sunday night, but found a a way despite five interceptions from Jared Goff. Houston (6–4) couldn’t take advantage of multiple gifts, with the offensive line once again being a huge problem. C.J. Stroud threw two interceptions and was sacked four times, while the rushing attack went for 56 yards on 2.0 yards per attempt. For the Lions, it’s further evidence that they have a huge margin for error, even against good teams. As for Houston, it’s an indictment of the Texans as a title contender.  Stock up: Detroit’s defense should get recognized as a tough unit. Even without Aidan Hutchinson, it allowed only 248 yards and 16 first downs despite the offense giving the ball away time and again. This was a signature performance from a defense about to get Za’Darius Smith off the edge.  Stock down: Houston’s notion of being a contender. The Texans are a good team, but if the Chiefs, Bills or Ravens picked off Goff five times, there’s no way the game is close, let alone a Lions win. NFL Week 10 winners, losers: Cowboys' season can no longer be saved (WINNERS - The Lions, somehow, find a way.  Their quarterback threw five interceptions and they faced a 16-point deficit at the half, but the Detroit Lions pulled off an improbable comeback, scoring the game’s final 19 points and shutting out the Texans in the second half en route to a 26-23 victory.  Detroit (8-1) needed a 58-yard field goal and 52-yard game-winning kick as time expired, but it retained its one-game lead atop the NFC. NFL Game Recaps: Week 10, 2024 (Lions 26, Texans 23 - The Texans dominated the first half in this Sunday night battle. They created turnovers on what seemed like every Detroit offensive drive. It began when they picked Jared Goff off a deflection to set up a Joe Mixon touchdown. Another Goff interception was deflected by Denico Autry. Goff was intercepted three times prior to intermission and five times in total. This was tracking to be the worst performance of his career in what appeared to be a humiliating loss. The Texans were up 23-7 at intermission, and all hope seemed lost for the Lions.  Dan Campbell did not feel hopeless. Coming out of the tunnel, he told the NBC sideline reporter that his team needed some take-aways. As he was speaking, the Lions intercepted C.J. Stroud when the defender jumped the route. This was one of two picks Stroud threw following intermission. Stroud also fumbled, but recovered. Houston had no points in the second half, but they were inching toward getting three on the final offensive drive. Stroud couldn’t quite get there though, with Houston needing to settle for a 58-yard field goal by Ka’imi Fairbairn. The kick was wide left.  The Lions took over in great field position, but needed to pick up a first down. They did so on third-and-6, with Goff finding Amon-Ra St. Brown for an 11-yard gain. Jake Bates, who hugged the right upright on a prior field goal of 50-plus, had to attempt a 52-yarder for the win. Bates hugged the left upright this time, as the Lions completed the comeback, scoring 19 unanswered points.  Detroit fought hard and never gave up despite the ugly deficit. Goff really struggled until the fourth quarter, throwing five interceptions and skipping passes into the ground, but he completed some clutch throws to get the win.   The Texans blew a 23-7 lead, but before their fans get too dejected, this game didn’t really matter all that much for them. CBS Grades (Grades - C+. Football is the ultimate team sport and the Lions showed why on Sunday night. Despite Jared Goff's five interceptions, the Lions were still able to rally back from a 16-point deficit to win thanks to a total team effort. After giving up 23 points in the first half, the defense came alive in the second half, holding the Texans to 97 yards and zero points. Goff rebounded from his five interceptions with a nearly perfect fourth quarter that saw him go 6 of 8 for 79 yards. Not only did he throw a TD to Amon-Ra St. Brown, but he also set up Jake Bates' 52-yard game-winning field goal. Five things you may have missed from Week 10 (Jared Goff throws five picks, still wins - Just looking at the Detroit Lions' stats, you'd think they lost. Quarterback Jared Goff threw five interceptions and at one point trailed by 16 points. They are the first team to throw five picks and trail by 15+ and win since 1970. They trailed 23-7 at halftime and things were looking grim for the road team. Detroit was able to come back and set themselves up to even things up at 23 a piece, but first Jake Bates needed to hit a 58-yard field goal. The ball went through the uprights and it was looking like the Lions actually had a chance. NFL Offensive Line Rankings 2024: Stacking All 32 OLs Entering Week 11 (1. Detroit Lions - Starting five: LT Taylor Decker, LG Graham Glasgow, C Frank Ragnow, RG Kevin Zeitler, RT Penei Sewell.  All-Pro right tackle Penei Sewell spearheads Detroit’s dominant offensive line. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has figured out how to weaponize the former first-round pick in the run game, getting him into space and letting him go to work. Sewell even received a lateral on a hook-and-ladder play against the Cowboys in Week 6.  Frank Ragnow might be the NFL’s best center now that Jason Kelce is retired.
